  I'm looking to achieve the following: For a specific person, for example BarackObama, I'd like to get the last 100 times/tweets he was mentioned. Not his own tweets but the tweets of others containing @BarackObama. In the end I'd like to have: the person who mentioned, location, datetime. This content should be written to a flat file. I've been experimenting with the Twitter API and Python, with success but haven't yet succeeded achieving the above problem. I know there is a dev sections on the twitter website but they don't provide any example of code!! https://dev.twitter.com/docs/api/1/get/statuses/mentions count=100 .... For me the scripting language or way of doing is not relevant it's the result. I just read on the internet that python and Twitter api are a good match. Thanks a lot in advance!!

• Rails application and multilingual content, Model dilemma

  I'm writing in Rails a website that will be multilingual, for the application translation part i will use the simple I18n gem, for messages and everything related. Yet, all the content must be translated, and we're talking about lots of pages, that will be stored into the database ( like articles, news, etc. ) For now, I'm thinking of two approaches: Lets say i have a Pages table, the content in diff. languages, i will be storing it in a different table called PagesContent that will belong_to Pages and also to a Languages table. The problem here, is that I'll essentially duplicate the no. of tables needed. Pros: flexibility, in the box validation To skip that duplication i can serialize a hash into the content column of Pages, containing the translation. The problem here, is validation, arguably more code to write, and less flexibility when adding a new language. Pros: Less tables. Any other idea ?

I only know PHP/mysq/JS and there is not much AI stuff examples in PHP. There are some books on AI on internet but they use Java , Python. Now i have to apply AI techniques on web application. WHich language should i choose java or python. I searhed on internet that i can call java classes inside my php so that can help as as i am very good at php i have also seen that python can also be used with php as well So which way should i go and roughly how much it will take me to learn java i have done java basics but that was 6 years ago

• What should I do to practice?

  I start a year long industrial placement in September where i will be coding in Java predominantly. I am going to use the summer to brush up on my Java as in year one of the degree Java was the main language taught for OOP modules. However this year i have had no Java exposure except for an algorithms module, which was one of eight, so as you can see i am probably getting really rusty!. What i wanted to know is, how does the "real world" java programming differ from university coding and what do you suggest i brush up on that would be different to my normal workings. As a start I definitely need to get familiar with a professional IDE like NetBeans, opposed to having used BlueJ throughout but more specifically what coding practices should I get more familiar with. I appreciate they wont expect me to be a qualified full developer and will give me time, but I would like to hit the ground running as it were, with me having full hopes to secure a permanent position after I finish my degree.

• Foreach File in a Folder in Flash?

  Hey, I have an image slideshow program working right now and it takes in a folder of a hard coded in number of images. I would like to change this so that it can take in a folder and will display all of them no matter the number. Is there a way to do this in flash? I'm thinking something like the foreach loop in perl or other scripting language. It is possible to store then number of images in a text file but I also don't know how to read that in flash either. I'm working in actionscript 3. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -Mike

• Watir question regarding selecting a hidden dropdown.

  Hi, I have two dropdowns, the second dropdown does not show until a choice is made from the first one. Using watir, i can select the first dropdown, and when i watch it, the second one becomes active, but it cannot select it. i just tried the regular select_list using name and id.   This question is related to: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3027705/experiences-with-language-converters I just can tell I searched the web for quite a few days but hardly found anything about somewhat "proper" test in access. I found some framworks like accessunit but that's Unit testing, what abouut the forms? What about the different reports etc. A counter-example in "testing" is e.g the rails or Seaside or Smalltalk area. Where testing is thought of as integral part. But I have not found anything comparable for Access based solutions. Maybe some of you know better?

• Registering a delegate function with an ISO C++ callback (on mono)

  I am thinking of wrapping ISO C++ code in C# class. The only problem so far is how to deal with the C++ callbacks. In .Net languages (C# and Vb.Net), I believe the callback equivalent. Sticking with C# for now, can anyone recommend a way that I can register the C# delegate functions with my ISO C++ code. The ISO C++ code is a notification library, and I want to be able to "push" the notifications to the mono framework (i.e. C# delegates in this case). My underlying assumption is that the mechanism/steps to implement this would be the same for the .Net languages - I'll just have to code the actual delegates in the .Net language of choice - is that assumption correct? Last but not the least, is the question of thread saftey. The underlying ISO C++ code that I am exposing to .Net (mono to be more specific), is both re-ntrant and thread safe - do I have to do anything "extra" to call .Net delegate from my ISO C++ code?

My background is in imperative/object-oriented programming languages, and therefore, I am used to use case analysis and the use of UML to document the design of program. But the thing is that UML is inherently related to the object-oriented way of doing software. And I am intrigued about what would be the best way to develop documentation and define software designs for a system that is going to be developed using functional programming. Would you still use use case analysis or perhaps structured analysis and design instead? How do software architects define the high-level design of the system so that developers follow it? What do you show to you clients or to new developers when you are supposed to present a design of the solution? How do you document a picture of the whole thing without having first to write it all? Is there anything comparable to UML in the functional world?

Why?

• UITableView Edit Indentation

  Hi, I'm building a pretty simple UITable in my app with custom cells that I'v created. The target language is hebrew. thats why all my tabels are right to left. Everything works fine until I'm changing the table to Edit mode. I'v successfully canceled the delete and the red accessory button becuase thay are in the oppisite direction but the cell get this tiny indentation to the right and part of my cell is not showed. I tried the return NO; to the function (BOOL)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView shouldIndentWhileEditingRowAtIndexPath (NSIndexPath *)indexPath but it didn't work. any suggestions ? thanks in advance

• Is recursion preferred compare to iteration in multicore era?

  Or say, do multicore CPUs process recursion faster than iteration? Or it simply depends on how one language runs on the machine? like c executes function calls with large cost, comparing to doing simple iterations. I had this question because one day I told one of my friend that recursion isn't any amazing magic that can speed up programs, and he told me that with multicore CPUs recursion can be faster than iteration. EDIT: If we consider the most recursion-loved situation (data structure, function call), is it even possible for recursion to be faster?

• C#: Why only integral enums?

  I've been writing C# for seven years now, and I keep wondering, why do enums have to be of an integral type? Wouldn't it be nice to do something like: enum ErrorMessage { NotFound: "Could not find", BadRequest: "Malformed request" } Is this a language design choice, or are there fundamental incompatibilities on a compiler, CLR, or IL level? Do other languages have enums with string or complex (i.e. object) types? What languages? (I'm aware of workarounds; my question is, why are they needed?) EDIT: "workarounds" = attributes or static classes with consts :)

  I had a list of tuples where every tuple consists of two integers and I wanted to sort by the 2nd integer. After looking in the python help I got this: sorted(myList, key=lambda x: x[1]) which is great. My question is, is there an equally succinct way of doing this in C# (the language I have to work in)? I know the obvious answer involving creating classes and specifying an anonymous delegate for the whole compare step but perhaps there is a linq oriented way as well.   Hi, I have this programming question that's been bothering me for some time now. I'm wondering how is it possible to write applications that change the Windows UI? More precisely how could you write an application that modifies the Windows Taskbar or the Windows Desktop? I'm really interested in this topic but cannot find a lot of information. I've read about extending the Windows Shell but I can't seem to find anything related to modifying the Taskbar and the Desktop. I'm looking for something along the lines of Rainmeter. How did those guys create an application that lives inside the Windows Desktop? I'd like to point out that my prefered language for this would be C# but if you want to give me hints in other languages I'm fine with it and I am running on Windows 7. Thank you

So if we generate combination in main.length of ordered then it looks like ..... a1 b1 c1, a1 b1 c2, a1 b1 c3 ...... a1 b2 c1, a1 b3 c1, ..... a2 b1 c1, a3 b1 c1, ..... and total count will be a.length * b.length * c.length ........ = ?   Somebody told me that allocating with malloc is not secure anymore, I'm not a C/C++ guru but I've made some stuff with malloc and C/C++. Does anyone know about what risks I'm into?   In my app, I use Groovy as a scripting language. To make things easier for my customers, I have a global scope where I define helper classes and constants. Currently, I need to run the script (which builds the global scope) every time a user script is executed: context = setupGroovy(); runScript( context, "global.groovy" ); // Can I avoid doing this step every time? runScript( context, "user.groovy" ); Is there a way to setup this global scope once and just tell the embedded script interpreter: "Look here if you can't find a variable"? That way, I could run the global script once. Note: Security is not an issue here but if you know a way to make sure the user can't modify the global scope, that's an additional plus.

• JavaScript helper libraries? No DOM or AJAX stuff

  As I'm writing JavaScript I'm always missing some fairly basic language features that JavaScript just don't have. So is there any library that would bring such features as trim, sprintf, str.endwith and etc. functions to JavaScript ? I just have written those functions too many times and I'm also tired of copy/pasting them from my old code. It would be nice to have some library which has those implemented and tested in one place. Note that I'm not talking about Ajax/DOM-libraries like jQuery or Dojo and such. I know that those libraries bring some of the features that I'm talking here, but not all. And I would like to have also an environment independent library so that same library could be used with server side JavaScript . Best library so far that I've found is php.js, but I don't like how it is polluting the global namespace. I'm also not too fond of how PHP-functions are named.

• Compilation hangs for a class with field double d = 2.2250738585072012e-308

  I have come across an interesting situation. A coworker committed some changes, which would not compile on my machine neither from the IDE (Eclipse) nor from a command line (Maven). The problem manifested in the compilation process taking 100% CPU and only killing the process would help to stop it. After some analysis the cause of the problem was located and resolved. It turned out be a line "double d = 2.2250738585072012e-308" (without semicolon at the end) in one of the interfaces. The following snipped duplicates it. public class WeirdCompilationIssue { double d = 2.2250738585072012e-308 } Why would compiler hang? A language edge case?
