  • Database normalization and duplicate values

    - by bretddog
Consider a Parent / Child / GrandChild structure in a database table schema, or even a deeper hierarchy. These being in the same aggregate. One table DAYS keeps a single row per day, and has a "Date" field. This is the root table, or maybe a child of the root. No row can ever be deleted in this table. In this case, however complex my table schema looks like, however far away in the hierarchy any other table is, is there any reason why any other table would hold a Date value? Can't it instead just have a FK to the DAYS table. I obviously assume that the creation of these date fields happen not before such datefield exist in the DAYS table. I'm now thinking just about the date part to be relevant, not the time part. Not sure if all databases can store these individually. That's maybe relevant, but not really the focus of the question.

  • simplexml object node iteration

    - by MorbidWrath
    I have an xml file that I'm parsing with php's simplexml, but I'm having an issue with an iteration through nodes. the xml: <channel> <item> <title>Title1</title> <category>Cat1</category> </item> <item> <title>Title2</title> <category>Cat1</category> </item> <item> <title>Title3</title> <category>Cat2</category> </item> </channel> my counting function: public function cat_count($cat){ $count = 0; $items = $this->xml->channel->item; $size = count($size); for($i=0;$i<$size;$i++){ if($items[$i]->category == $cat){ $count++; } } return $count; } Am I overlooking an error in my code, or is there another preferred method for iterating through the nodes? I've also used a foreach and while statement with no luck, so I'm at a loss. Any suggestions?

  • Creating a session user login php

    - by user2419393
I'm stuck on how to create a session for a user who logs in. I got the part of checking to make sure the log in information corresponds with the database information, but is stuck on how to take the email address and store into a session. Here is my php code below. <?php include '../View/header.php'; session_start(); require('../model/database.php'); $email = $_POST['username']; $password = $_POST['password']; $sql = "SELECT emailAddress FROM customers WHERE emailAddress ='$email' AND password = '$password'"; $result = mysql_query($sql, $db); if (!$result) { echo "DB Error, could not query the database\n"; echo 'MySQL Error: ' . mysql_error(); exit; } while ($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result)) { echo $row['emailAddress']; } mysql_free_result($result); ?>

  • php foreach looping twice

    - by Jack
    Hi, I am trying to loop through some data from my database but it is outputting it twice. $fields = 'field1, field2, field3, field4'; $idFields = 'id_field1, id_field2, id_field3, id_field4'; $tables = 'table1, table2, table3, table4'; $table = explode(', ', $tables); $field = explode(', ', $fields); $id = explode(', ', $idFields); $str = 'Egg'; $i=1; while ($i<4) { $f = $field[$i]; $idd = $id[$i]; $sql = $writeConn->select()->from($table[$i], array($f, $idd))->where($f . " LIKE ?", '%' . $str . '%'); $string = '<a title="' . $str . '" href="' . $currentProductUrl . '">' . $str . '</a>'; $result = $writeConn->fetchAssoc($sql); foreach ($result as $row) { echo 'Success! Found ' . $str . ' in ' . $f . '. ID: ' . $row[$idd] . '.<br>'; } $i++; } Outputting: Success! Found Egg in field3. ID: 5. Success! Found Egg in field3. ID: 5. Could someone please explain why it is looping through both the indexed and associative values? UPDATE I did some more playing around and tried the following. $fields = 'field1, field2, field3, field4'; $idFields = 'id_field1, id_field2, id_field3, id_field4'; $tables = 'table1, table2, table3, table4'; $table = explode(', ', $tables); $field = explode(', ', $fields); $id = explode(', ', $idFields); $str = 'Egg'; $i=1; while ($i<4) { $f = $field[$i]; $idd = $id[$i]; $sql = $writeConn->select()->from($table[$i], array($f, $idd))->where($f . " LIKE ?", '%' . $str . '%'); $string = '<a title="' . $str . '" href="' . $currentProductUrl . '">' . $str . '</a>'; $sth = $writeConn->prepare($sql); $sth->execute(); $result = $sth->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC); foreach ($result as $row) { echo 'Success! Found ' . $str . ' in ' . $f . '. ID: ' . $row[$idd] . '.<br>'; } $i++; } The interesting thing is that this outputs the below: Success! Found Egg in field3. ID: E. Success! Found Egg in field3. ID: E. Success! Found Egg in field3. ID: 5. Success! Found Egg in field3. ID: 5. Success! Found Egg in field3. ID: E. Success! Found Egg in field3. ID: E. Success! Found Egg in field3. ID: 5. Success! Found Egg in field3. ID: 5. I have also tried adding $i to the output and this outputs 2 as expected. If I change fetch(PDO::FETCH_BOTH) to fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC) the output is as follows: Success! Found Egg in field3. ID: E. Success! Found Egg in field3. ID: E. Success! Found Egg in field3. ID: 5. Success! Found Egg in field3. ID: 5. This has been bugging me for too long, so if anyone could help I would be very appreciative!

  • Reading a text file in MATLAB line by line

    - by Hossein
Hi, I have a CSV file, I want to read this file and do some pre-calculations on each row to see for example that row is useful for me or not and if yes I save it to a new CSV file. can someone give me an example? in more details this is how my data looks like: (string, float, float) the numbers are coordinates. ABC,51.9358183333333,4.183255 ABC,51.9353866666667,4.1841 ABC,51.9351716666667,4.184565 ABC,51.9343083333333,4.186425 ABC,51.9343083333333,4.186425 ABC,51.9340916666667,4.18688333333333 basically i want to save the rows that have for distances more than 50 or 50 in a new file.the string field should also be copied. thanks

  • Database triggers / referential integrity and in-memory caching

    - by Ran Biron
Do you see database triggers / referential integrity rules being used in a way that changes actual data in the database (changing row w in table x causes a change in row y in table z)? If yes, How does this tie-in with the increasing popularity of in-memory caching (memcache and friends)? After all, these actions occur inside the database but the caching system must be aware of them in order to reflect to correct state (or at least invalidate the possibly changed state). I find it hard to believe that callbacks are implemented for such cases. Does anyone have real-world experience with such a setup / real-world experience with considering such a setup and abandoning it (which way did you go? if caching, how do you enforce integrity?)

  • SQL Server 2005: Update rows in a specified order (like ORDER BY)?

    - by JMTyler
I want to update rows of a table in a specific order, like one would expect if including an ORDER BY clause, but SQL Server does not support the ORDER BY clause in UPDATE queries. I have checked out this question which supplied a nice solution, but my query is a bit more complicated than the one specified there. UPDATE TableA AS Parent SET Parent.ColA = Parent.ColA + (SELECT TOP 1 Child.ColA FROM TableA AS Child WHERE Child.ParentColB = Parent.ColB ORDER BY Child.Priority) ORDER BY Parent.Depth DESC; So, what I'm hoping that you'll notice is that a single table (TableA) contains a hierarchy of rows, wherein one row can be the parent or child of any other row. The rows need to be updated in order from the deepest child up to the root parent. This is because TableA.ColA must contain an up-to-date concatenation of its own current value with the values of its children (I realize this query only concats with one child, but that is for the sake of simplicity - the purpose of the example in this question does not necessitate any more verbosity), therefore the query must update from the bottom up. The solution suggested in the question I noted above is as follows: UPDATE messages SET status=10 WHERE ID in (SELECT TOP (10) Id FROM Table WHERE status=0 ORDER BY priority DESC ); The reason that I don't think I can use this solution is because I am referencing column values from the parent table inside my subquery (see WHERE Child.ParentColB = Parent.ColB), and I don't think two sibling subqueries would have access to each others' data. So far I have only determined one way to merge that suggested solution with my current problem, and I don't think it works. UPDATE TableA AS Parent SET Parent.ColA = Parent.ColA + (SELECT TOP 1 Child.ColA FROM TableA AS Child WHERE Child.ParentColB = Parent.ColB ORDER BY Child.Priority) WHERE Parent.Id IN (SELECT Id FROM TableA ORDER BY Parent.Depth DESC); The WHERE..IN subquery will not actually return a subset of the rows, it will just return the full list of IDs in the order that I want. However (I don't know for sure - please tell me if I'm wrong) I think that the WHERE..IN clause will not care about the order of IDs within the parentheses - it will just check the ID of the row it currently wants to update to see if it's in that list (which, they all are) in whatever order it is already trying to update... Which would just be a total waste of cycles, because it wouldn't change anything. So, in conclusion, I have looked around and can't seem to figure out a way to update in a specified order (and included the reason I need to update in that order, because I am sure I would otherwise get the ever-so-useful "why?" answers) and I am now hitting up Stack Overflow to see if any of you gurus out there who know more about SQL than I do (which isn't saying much) know of an efficient way to do this. It's particularly important that I only use a single query to complete this action. A long question, but I wanted to cover my bases and give you guys as much info to feed off of as possible. :) Any thoughts?

  • Replacing elements within a string in R

    - by Maureen
Hi, I have a row in a data frame in R that is made up of sequences of undetermined length of 0s 1s and 2s as characters. So "01", "010", "201", "102", "00012"... things like this. I'd like to find a way to determine if the last character in the string is NUMERICALLY the largest. It's important that I keep the row in the data frame as characters for other purposes. So basically I want to take substr(x, nchar(x), nchar(x)) and determine if it, as a number, is the largest of the numbers in the character string. I'm super lost as to how to do this, since I'm not all that familiar with regular expressions and I have to back and forth between treating elements as characters and numbers. Thanks in advance. ~Maureen

  • Excel PivotTable : Calculated Field / Item for Period Comparison

    - by dino76
    HI All, If I have a PivotTable in Excel 2007 with a date field. I understand that I can group the date by day, month or even year using Group Field (Years & Months). If I combine with product perspective, the PivotTable may look like this Sum of Sales_Total | Column Labels Row Labels | PRODUCT-001 | PRODUCT-002 | Grand Total - 2006 | 2000 | 1500 | 3500 Jan | 1700 | 800 | 2500 Feb | 300 | 700 | 1000 - 2007 | 1000 | 1500 | 2500 Jan | 700 | 800 | 1500 Feb | 300 | 700 | 1000 - 2008 | 600 | 700 | 1300 Jan | 600 | 700 | 1300 Now, what I want to do is to compare Jan 2008 - Jan 2006 and Jan 2007 - Jan 2006. Something like this : | Column Labels | PRODUCT-001 | | ... Row Labels | Sum of Sales | Sum of Last Sales | - 2006 | 2000 | | Jan | 1700 | | Feb | 300 | | - 2007 | 1000 | 2000 | Jan | 700 | 1700 | Feb | 300 | 300 | - 2008 | 600 | 1000 | Jan | 600 | 700 | Is it possible ? If so, how to do that ? Thanks, D. Chopins

  • jQuery fade in background colour

    - by Marcos Placona
Hi, I'm trying to fade in the background colour of a table row, and can't get it right. The fade-in will happen when a button is clicked. I tried something like: $("#row_2").fadeIn('slow').css('background', 'gold') And although this will apply the colour to the table row, it won't fade in, but apply it at once. I'm sure this is a simple thing, but I can't find an answer to that. I've looked all over in this website, but still no luck for this specific thing. Thanks in advance

  • T-SQL Getting duplicate rows returned

    - by cBlaine
The following code section is returning multiple columns for a few records. SELECT a.ClientID,ltrim(rtrim(c.FirstName)) + ' ' + case when c.MiddleName <> '' then ltrim(rtrim(c.MiddleName)) + '. ' else '' end + ltrim(rtrim(c.LastName)) as ClientName, a.MISCode, b.Address, b.City, dbo.ClientGetEnrolledPrograms(CONVERT(int,a.ClientID)) as Abbreviation FROM ClientDetail a JOIN Address b on(a.PersonID = b.PersonID) JOIN Person c on(a.PersonID = c.PersonID) LEFT JOIN ProgramEnrollments d on(d.ClientID = a.ClientID and d.Status = 'Enrolled' and d.HistoricalPKID is null) LEFT JOIN Program e on(d.ProgramID = e.ProgramID and e.HistoricalPKID is null) WHERE a.MichiganWorksData=1 I've isolated the issue to the ProgramEnrollments table. This table holds one-to-many relationships where each ClientID can be enrolled in many programs. So for each program a client is enrolled in, there is a record in the table. The final result set is therefore returning a row for each row in the ProgramEnrollments table based on these joins. I presume my join is the issue but I don't see the problem. Thoughts/Suggestions? Thanks, Chuck

  • Method params match signature, but still getting error

    - by Jason
I am in the midst of converting a VB library to C#. One of my methods has the following signature in VB: Private Shared Sub FillOrder(ByVal row As DataRowView, ByRef o As Order) In C# I converted it to: private static void FillOrder(DataRowView row, ref Order o) From my constructor inside my Order class, I am calling the FillOrder() method like so: DataView dv = //[get the data] if (dv.Count > 0) { FillOrder(dv[0], this); } In VB, this works: Dim dv As DataView = '[get data]' If dv.Count > 0 Then FillOrder(dv.Item(0), Me) End If However, in VS10 in the C# file I am getting a red squiggle under this call with the following error: The best overloaded method match for [the method] has some invalid arguments This was working code in VB. What am I doing wrong?

hey guys i have a tag table in my php/mysql project that looks like this Table name : bt_tags Table fileds : tid,tag and for every story rows there is a filed named : tags Table name: stories table filed : tags that saved in this field as ids 1 5 6 space between them now problem : when using while loop to fetch all fields in story table , the page uses 1 query to show every stories' detail but for showing tag's names , i should query another table to find names , we have ids stored in story table now i used for loop between while loop to show tag names but im sure there is a better way to decrease page queries how can i improve this script and show tag's names without using *for loop ?* $result = $db->sql_query("SELECT * FROM ".STORY_TABLE." "); while ($row = $db->sql_fetchrow($result)) { //fetching other $vars ---- $tags_id = explode(" ",$row['tags']); $c = count($tags_id); for($i=1;$i<$c-1;$i++){ list($tag_name,$slug) = $db->sql_fetchrow($db->sql_query( 'SELECT `tag`,`slug` FROM `bt_tags` WHERE `tid` = "'.tags_id[$i].'" • How do I mimic Windows Explorer multi-select/drag-n-drop behavior in a DataGridView?

    - by bsh152s
I'm trying to mimic the way Windows Explorer handles multiple selection. In a default DataGridView, you can select multiple items using Ctrl-click. But if you release the Ctrl key and then try and drag/drop the selected items, it clears the selected items and only selects the "hit" row. I found the following solution somewhere online. protected override OnMouseDown(MouseEventArgs e) { int hitRowIndex = HitTest(e.X, e.Y).RowIndex; if(!SelectedRows.Contains(Rows[hitRowIndex])) { base.OnMouseDown(); } } However, this causes other side effects. With the CTRL key pressed and mousing down on a selected item, the item remains selected. This makes sense because the mousedown event is bypassed if the row clicked on is selected. From looking at the behavior of Windows Explorer, it looks like the deselection of an item with the CTRL key held is not handled until the MouseUp event. Has anyone tried to do this?

  • What are the best practices for writing maintainable CSS?

    - by Art
I am just starting to explore this area and wonder what are the best practices when it comes to production of clean, well-structured and maintainable CSSes. There seems to be few different approaches to structuring CSS rules. One of the most commonly encountered ones I saw was throwing everything together in one rule, i.e. margins, borders, typefaces, backgrounds, something like this: .my-class { border-top:1px solid #c9d7f1; font-size:1px; font-weight:normal; height:0; position:absolute; top:24px; width:100%; } Another approach I noticed employed grouping of properties, say text-related properties like font-size, typeface, emphasis etc goes into one rule, backgrounds go into other, borders/margins go into yet another one: .my-class { border-top:1px solid #c9d7f1; } .my-class { font-size:1px; font-weight:normal; } .my-class { height:0; top:24px; width:100%; position:absolute; } I guess I am looking for a silver bullet here which I know I am not going to get, bet nevertheless - what are the best practices in this space?

  • SQL Server 2008 R2

    - by kevchadders
Hi all, I heard on the grapevine that Microsoft will be releasing SQL Server 2008 R2 within a year. Though I initially thought this was a patch for the just released 2008 version, I realised that it’s actually a completely different version that you would have to pay for. (Am I correct, if you had SQL Server 2008, would you have to pay again if you wanted to upgrade to 2008 R2?) If you’re already running SQL Server 2008, would you say it’s still worth the upgrade? Or does it depend on the size of your company and current setup. For what I’ve initially read, I do get the impression that this version would be more useful for the very high end hardware setup where you want to have very good scalability. With regard to programming, is there any extra enhancements/support in there which you’re aware of that will significantly help .NET Products/Web Development? Initially found a couple of links on it, but I was wondering if anyone had anymore info to share on subject as I couldn’t find nothing on SO about it? Thanks. New SQL Server R2 Microsoft Link on it. Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 EDIT: More information based on the Express Edition One very interesting thing about SQL Server 2008 R2 concerns the Express edition. Previous express versions of SQL Server Express had a database size limit of 4GB. With SQL Server Express 2008 R2, this has now been increased to 10GB !! This now makes the FREE express edition a much more viable option for small & medium sized applications that are relatively light on database requirements. Bear in mind, that this limit is per database, so if you coded your application cleverly enough to use a separate database for historical/archived data, you could squeeze even more out of it! For more information, see here: http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2010/04/21/database-size-limit-increased-to-10gb-in-sql-server-2008-r2-express.aspx

  • How to recalculate primary index?

    - by JohnM2
I have table in mysql database with autoincrement PRIMARY KEY. On regular basis rows in this table are being deleted an added. So the result is that value of PK of the latest row is growing very fast, but there is not so much rows in this table. What I want to do is to "recalculate" PK in this way, that the first row has PK = 1, second PK = 2 and so on. There are no external dependencies on PK of this table so it would be "safe". Is there anyway it can be done using only mysql queries/tools? Or I have to do it from my code?

  • Oracle Triggers Query..

    - by AGeek
Lets consider a Table STUD and a ROW-Level TRIGGER is implemented over INSERT query.. My scenario goes like this, whenever a row is inserted, a trigger is fired and it should access some script file which is placed in the hard disk, and ultimately should print the result. So, is this thing is possible? and if yes, then this thing should exist in dynamic form, i.e. if we change the content of script file, then the oracle should reflect those changes as well. I have tried doing this for java using External Procedures, but doesn't feel that much satisfied with the result that i wanted. Kindly give your point-of-view for this kind of scenario and ways that this can be implemented.
