  I'm a computer science student and know a little about some technology to start developing my website, like PHP, RubyOnRails and Python, and MySQL and PostgreSQL for Database. I need to know what are the best (secure, stable, low-price, etc) to get started, based on my business information: My website will be a live video-streaming one, similar to livestream.com We need to provide a secure service for our customers. They need to have a page to create and configure their own Live-Streaming-Videos, get statistics, etc. We work with Wowza Media Server ruuning on an Apache Server In addition, I would like to know some good practices for this kind of website development, as I am new to this. I have already done some end projects: Small Java Platform Game A Small Polynomial Solver A Small Image Sharing Site A Chess Website: chesslounge.net I am currently doing some Android Development and so far I have made a program that Vibrates, Blinks the Light, or Creates a custom status message based on the user input. And a program that rotates a pyramid with a texture. My question is: Should I stick to what I am doing or Learn something a little new? I am itching to do C++, but what is your advice?

• No databases showing in phpMyAdmin

  My website is hosted in shared hosting service and is working fine with updated news stored in MySQL database. To manage the database of website, I install phpMyAdmin in a sub-folder with the same username and password used in website. When I login to phpMyAdmin, I don't see my database. phpMyAdmin is showing "No databases" in left pane. Is there any thing I need to configure in phpMyAdmin? • Date calculation algorithm

  I'm working on a project to schedule a machine shop, basically I've got everything covered BUT date calculations, I've got a method called schedule (working on PHP here): public function schedule($start_date, $duration_in_minutes) Now my problem is, currently I'm calculating end time manually because time calculations have the following rules: During weekdays, work with business hours (7:00 AM to 5:00 PM) Work on Saturdays from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM Ignore holidays (in Colombia we have A LOT of holidays) I already have a lookup table for holidays, I also have a Java version of this algorithm that I wrote for a previous version of the project, but that one's also manual. Is there any way to calculate an end time from a start time given duration?, my problem is that I have to consider the above rules, I'm looking for a (maybe?) math based solution, however I currently don't have the mind to devise such a solution myself. I'll be happy to provide code samples if necessary.

• Is there a way to check if redistributed code has been altered?

  I would like to redistribute my app (PHP) in a way that the user gets the front end (presentation) layer which is using the API on my server through a web service. I want the user to be able to alter his part of the app but at the same time exclude such altered app from the normal support and offer support on pay by the hour basis. Is there a way to check if the source code was altered? Only solution I can think of would be to get check sums of all the files then send it through my API and compare them with the original app. Is there any more secure way to do it so it would be harder for the user to break such protection?

• Clicks counting and crawler bots

  I am currently running a small affiliate-program for Facebook users. We use an auto-poster to publish links to fan pages. Every hit is stored in our database and we have included a 24 hour reload block for the IP-addresses. My problem right now is that the PHP script also stores every hit from all the bots that crawls my website. Now I was thinking to block those bots with the robots.txt of my website but I am afraid that this will have a negative effect on my AdSense ads. Does anybody have an idea for me how to work this out?

I found a few sites like www.freightCenter.com that provide quotes using webservice. Two drawbacks, its paid service and the other, my site response time is slow if I use the webservice.   I've done a tiny, tiny bit of TDD in building an app for a company that I interned with. We used lots of mocking and wrote lots of assert statements, after reading lots of blogs, I'm convinced that TDD is the way to go, but how do you go about TDD web applications? My main framework is Yii in PHP. My main questions are: What do you test? Models? Controllers? Views? How do you know if the output is correct? All my web apps interact with a DB, are there cavets to that and gotchas? Can I do testing in Netbeans? Can you test form elements or just strictly objects & methods?

My idea: to grant some users (2-3 at the most) a specific privilege to talk privately in a message room. none of them would be administrator there. I need such features: - admin panel for adding users allowed to post messages in room - room invisible to anyone except users - filtering not-allowed words - Ajax-enabled so that replies appear immediately - other message room features I have a linux hosting so PHP message room would be the best option. • Why should I adopt MVC?

  I decided to get my hands wet and got the YII framework for PHP. I created my first application, then created new controller, model and view. Connected to database, got my record passed from controller to the view and printed the hello world. I am confused now. If I have to do the same thing for each page, this seems like a nightmare to me. In each controller I have to do a lot of same operations - declare variables, and pass them to views. I also need to create models for each page and this is all confusing to me. In my idea the main goal of development is to avoid duplication, but what I see here is lots and lots of duplicated code. Please advise and clarify. Maybe you could suggest a good reading about MVC and coding patterns and best practices in MVC. Because so far, it takes much more time to create a small site using MVC than using my own programming schema.

  What do you need to know to at the very least get your foot in the door? We're assuming for someone who doesn't have a college degree (yet) but will eventually get one. My guess is html, css, javascript, and php, and photoshop and dreamweaver, and sql. And being familiar with using a web host to have sites live, like knowing how to use cpanel. • Penny auction concept and how the timer works

  I am creating a penny auction site using PHP yii framework. The main consideration of the system is to update the database records of all active auctions (max 15 auctions) with the current ticker timer. I am seeking for advice on how i should design the system where every auction item will have a its own countdown timer stored in the database and when someone bids the auction item, the counter resets to 2 min. Every users who are connected to the system should see the same countdown timer for that particular auction. I am little confused on how i should design the system. Will there be a performance issue when there are frequent updates to the database (Mysql) where 15 active auctions are updated every seconds, the countdown timer decreases by a second in the database table for the particular auction. • Having a generic data type for a database table column, is it "good" practice?

  I'm working on a PHP project where some object (class member) may contain different data type. For example : class Property { private $_id; // (PK) private $_ref_id; // the object reference id (FK) private $_name; // the name of the property private $_type; // 'string', 'int', 'float(n,m)', 'datetime', etc. private $_data; // ... // ..snip.. public getters/setters } Now, I need to perform some persistence on these objects. Some properties may be a text data type, but nothing bigger than what a varchar may hold. Also, later on, I need to be able to perform searches and sorting. Is it a good practice to use a single database table for this (ie. is there a non negligible performance impact)? If it's "acceptable", then what could be the data type for the data column?

I want to display photos, family tree, have logins and allow members to upload family photos,documents,stories and comments and have tags for the docs and photos and maybe a message board and blog. • Will Google crawl session based website

  I have a website, it is split into 3 categories but using PHP its an all-in one kind of style. When a user chooses a category on the home page a session is set, this is then used to set the style and contents of the website. Would Googlebot and other bots be able to still scan my website? If a page is accessed and no session is set then the user is sent back to the home page. I have created special links, that set a session but go straight to the contact page. Even this page doesn't seem to be showing up. Any ideas if a sitemap with specially crafted links (to set the session) will help Google?

• Code to simulate a users actions, such as logging in

  I've recently begun working on a PHP application, replacing another developer. I believed the application was using an API to communicate with a remote service but when I looked through the code I found that it was using a set of functions to actually log in, fill out forms and submit them as a user might do in a browser. My intention is to replace this code, to use the services API instead. I've considered leaving the code as is and not replace it. It makes me wonder though is this a common practice in the software industry? To have a programme simulate a users actions in a browser to perform a set of actions? It feels to me that this is clever but poor programming, Have any other developers seen this?

• General solution to solve different sports results in different languages

  I currently have some code that checks if squash and tennis scores are valid, both in javascript and PHP. This results in 4 blocks of code existing, 2 languages * 2 sports, which does not scale well should any extra sports come around, or extra languages... How can one describe the valid scores of games via a settings/text file, so that each language can parse them and apply these rules. • CMS without templates

  I am looking for a CMS where I can layout the page from scratch using HTML/PHP/CSS and simply enter code such as:- FOR EACH (listOfArticles) SORT mostRecent CATEGORY news LIMIT 5 <div class="articleTitle">{title}</div> <div class="arcielBody">{body}</div> END to get a list of the five most recent articles of a certain category in the relevant place. Does such a thing exist anymore? Unless my mind is playing tricks on me, the CMSs of five or ten years ago had this approach. I am thinking of MovableType and the now defunct CityDesk. It seems to me that CMSs these days have a 'templates first' approach. I.E. you must always choose a template before doing anything - which I find really painful. Learning how to design these structured templates also seems overly painful. So can anyone help me in my quest? Thank you, Mark

• Pagination and duplicate content

  I have an archive page that displays the number of articles published. Because there were so many, I ran a pagination script: for 127.0.0.1/archive/2/?p=x&pp=y where p is the page number and pp is number of articles to display per page. The pagination looks like this: Prev 1 2 3 4 ... 12 NEXT with each item linking to p like <a href="?p=x">x</a>. I also have the items per page setter: 25 | 50 | 100 (<a href="?pp=y">y</a>). Now I have a PHP script that fixes pp into a session variable. But I am worried about duplicate content (since incrementing pp values will be inclusive) and also content not getting indexed because its not in the pagination link. so in the example above, pages 5-11 will not be indexed. Any ideas on how to fix this?
