  Java is fifteen years old. It started life as an alternative to C++ with a comprehensive standard library. Riding on the coattails of the Internet boom, it was popular for writing web applets. Its supposed portability was touted as a way to write desktop apps that would run on any platform. Now it's 2010. Applets are long gone. Desktop apps are giving way to web and mobile apps. Scripting languages are very popular, as is Flash, especially among web-centric developers. People have been chanting "Java's death is near" for several years. Yet a quick job search shows that Java is still a desired skill among programmers. So what is Java used for these days? What kinds of apps are you writing in Java? This should give us an idea of the "state of Java" today. Has the Java tide shifted from Swing desktop apps to Android mobile apps? If you write programs in a JVM language (such as Scala or Groovy), mention it.

  New functionality has been released for Sales and Procurement Contracts in a new patch: Contracts 12.1.3++: Patch 13877401: 12.1.3 Rollup for Oracle Contracts Core. The new functionality includes: APIs for Import of Contract Templates, Contract Expert rules, Questions and Constants: The three APIs are as follows: API for Templates, API for Rules, and API for Questions and Constants. These can be used to both create entities and update existing templates and rules. The APIs will display error and warning messages which can be processed and analyzed by the customer. Ability to Apply Multiple Templates to a Sourcing, Procurement or Sales Document: The buyer can select and add multiple templates to a quote,sales agreement document, sourcing or purchasing odcument.  All the clauses and deliverables from the new templates are synchronized with the document. The Contract Expert rules are from the original template. The buyer can also view the list of templates that are added to any sales or procurement document. Ability to Define Multi-Row Variables: You can create user defined manual variables that are tables containing one row per line or multiple rows. Contract Preview will print the variable values according to the layout defined for the variable. These variables are not available for Contract Expert Rules and Supplier. Enhancement to Suggested Sections for Clauses by Contract Expert: You can associate multiple default sections with a clause. A clause is associated with multiple values of any system variable and for each such value a section name is associated in Contracts Terms Library. When Contract Expert is run in the contract authoring flow, the clause is automatically placed in the associated section name. Plus many more new features.   I am trying to setup an application that was built using the Zend framework. Let's say my subdomain is: http://subdomain.domain.com and that it points to the following: http://www.domain.com/projectdir/ The structure of the project dir is the following: application/ ... ... library/ ... ... public/ ... ... .htaccess The contents of the htaccess are: SetEnv APPLICATION_ENV production RewriteEngine On # skip existing files and folders RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -s [OR] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -l [OR] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d RewriteRule ^.*$ - [NC,L] # send everything to index RewriteRule ^.*$ index.php [NC,L] While this works, the child objects on the page are being directed to the domain i.e., the image URLs (and the CSS files etc.) are broken because they are being redirected to something like: http://www.domain.com/images/image.png Can someone please tell me how to fix this?

• General questions regarding open-source licensing

  I'm looking to release an open-source iOS software project but I'm very new to the licensing side of the things. While I'm aware that the majority of answers here will not lawyers, I'd appreciate it if anyone could steer me in the right direction. With the exception of the following requirements I'm happy for developers to largely do whatever they want with the projects source code. I'm not interested in any copyleft licensing schemes, and while I'd like to encourage attribution in derivative works it is not required. As such, my requirements are as follows: Original source can be distributed and re-distributed (verbatim) both commercially and non-commercially as long as the original copyright information, website link and license is maintained. I wish to retain rights to any of the multi-media distributed as part of the project (sound effects, graphics, logo marks, etc). Such assets will be included to allow other developers to easily execute the project, but cannot be re-distributed in any manner. I wish to retain rights to the applications name and branding. Futher to selecting an applicable license, I have the following questions: The project makes use of a number of third-party libraries (all licensed under variants of the MIT license). I've included individual licenses within the source (and application) and believe I've met all requirements expressed in these licenses, but is there anything else that needs to be done before distributing them as part of my open-source project? Also included in my project is a single proprietary, close-sourced library that's used to power a small part of the application. I'm obviously unable to include this in the source release, but what's the best way of handling this? Should I simply weak-link the project and exclude it entirely from the Git project?

• PublishingWeb.ExcludeFromNavigation Missing

  So recently I have had to make the transition from the SharePoint 2007 codebase to SharePoint 2010 codebase. Needless to say there hasn't been much difficulty in the changeover. However in a set of code that I was playing around with and transitioning I did find one change that might cause some pain to others out there that have been programming against the PublishingWeb object in the Microsoft.SharePoint.Publishing namespace. The 2007 snippet of code that work just fine in 2007 looks like: using (SPSite site = new SPSite(url)) using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb()) {      PublishingWeb publishingWeb = PublishingWeb.GetPublishingWeb(web);     publishingWeb.ExcludeFromNavigation(true, itemID);     publishingWeb.Update(); } The 2010 update to the code looks like: using (SPSite site = new SPSite(url)) using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb()) {     PublishingWeb publishingWeb = PublishingWeb.GetPublishingWeb(web);     publishingWeb.Navigation.ExcludeFromNavigation(true, itemID); //--Had to reference the Navigation object.     publishingWeb.Update(); } The purpose of the code is to keep a page from showing up on the global or current navigation when it is added to the pages library. However you see that the update to the 2010 codebase actually makes more "object" sense. It specifies that you are technically affecting the Navigation of the Publishing Web, instead of the Publishing Web itself. I know that this isn't a difficult problem to fix, but I thought it would be something quick to help out the general public. Michael

  Ignoring the security issues, I have the following script that synchronizes my music library from my MacBook Pro (running Snow Leopard) to the file store (CentOS 4) on my network: rsync -rav --progress --partial -e "ssh" ~/Music/iTunes/* user@scramasax:~/music/iTunes-scissor:~ When I try to use either a password provided on the command-line (), in a password file (--password-file), or in the environment variable RSYNC_PASSWORD, the login still goes interactive, requiring me to type my password again. I will be moving to pre-shared keys on my network, but in situations where that is not possible, such as rsync'ing files to a webserver, being able to successfully embed the password in the script would be very helpful.

• How do you manage the testing of your Android software on physical devices?

  I'm in charge of managing mobile application development at my company, and I am currently building a mobile device "library" for testing. Essentially, we want to have a representative device in-house for each of the OSes we are developing for, currently iOS (iPhone-only), Blackberry, and Android. Simulators only go so far, but I'm placing into the process a step to test software on the devices themselves. The problem we're finding is with Android. I don't think any of us here ever really understood just how fragmented the whole platform is until we started looking at devices to acquire. We are going to wait until v2.3 of Android is released, but which products to choose? Do we go by the most popular by market share? Do we get a small range of products by specs from least to most powerful overall? We're trying to avoid having to manage a dozen different devices to test each app, if not because of cost if only for the repeated time sink. How do you manage the testing of your Android software on physical devices?

• How can I set Windows Server 2008 juntion points to Every Read Allow?

  We have apps running on Windows Server 2003 and now 2008 as well. Unfortunately some of our code relies on inspecting the Documents and Settings directory which no longer exists in Windows 2003. It looks like there are "Junction Points" set up for backwards compatibility - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb756982.aspx. But it seems like nothing I can do can get me access. I basically need to be able to call from a command line on both 2003 and 2008: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe Which translates in Windows 2008 to : C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe I've tried setting up my own "Documents and Settings" folder in 2008 but it won't let me as that seems to be reserved for these Juntion Points.

  Hey Guys~ So the second day of the week starts, and we were all set for coming sessions on : - IS & Strategy and, - Changing Geo-politics & Business Environment We did our daily chores, rushed for breakfast, and reached Auditorioum, almost on time. IS & Strategy session was quite informative and interactive, and the prof. gave lot of examples, and it really gives us solid understanding by relating things with examples. Then goes the lunch, but the IS session over shoot for 15 minutes so our idea of taking a nap in lunch was not working out, but anyway we did our lunch and tried to sleep for 10-15 minutes. We got back and session on International Business started. Frankly, it’s a great topic, but we had tough time to be attentive, and it was hard to keep ourselves awake :P Anyhow the session came to an end, and we went to Library, and roamed around campus. Got back, had dinner, and went for a night walk, and ice-cream party. Lastly we did went to the platform inside the lake, and had a gag session, got back and  did “ITC eChaupal” case study. We have planned to visit Kali Mandir tomorrow, so I’ve to sleep for few hours…GN! Stay tuned for more… ram :)

• Moodle 2 pages loading up to 2000% faster

  On average our Moodle 2 pages were loading in 2.8 seconds, now they load in as little as 0.12 seconds, so that’s like 2333.333% faster!What was it I hear you say?Well it was the database connection, or more correctly the database library. I was using FreeTDS http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Installing_MSSQL_for_PHP, but now I’m using the new Microsoft Drivers 3.0 for PHP for SQL Server http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20098. I’m in a Windows Server IT department, and in both our live and development environments, we have Moodle 2.2.3, IIS 7.5, and PHP 5.3.10 running on two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers and using MS Network Load Balancing.Since moving to Moodle 2, the pages have always loaded much more slowly than they did in Moodle 1.9, I’ve been chasing this issue for quite a while. I had previously tried the Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server 2.0, but my testing showed it was slower than the FreeTDS driver.Then yesterday I found Microsoft had released the new version, Microsoft Drivers 3.0 for PHP for SQL Server, so I thought I’d give it a run, and wow what a difference it made.Pages that were loading in 2.8 seconds, now they load in as little as 0.12 seconds, 2333.333% faster…I have more testing to do, but so far it’s looking good, I have scheduled multi user load testing for early next week (fingers crossed).To make the change all I need to do was,download the driverscopy the relevant files to PHP\ext (for us they were php_pdo_sqlsrv_53_nts.dll and php_sqlsrv_53_nts.dll) install the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client x64 http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29065 add to PHP.ini, extension=php_pdo_sqlsrv_53_nts.dll, extension=php_sqlsrv_53_nts.dllremove form PHP.ini, extension=php_dblib.dllvchange in PHP.ini, mssql.textlimit = 20971520 and mssql.textsize = 20971520change Moodle config.php, $CFG->dbtype = 'sqlsrv'; and 'dbpersist' => Trueand then reboot and test…I've browsed courses, backed up/restored some really large and complicated courses, deleted courses etc. etc. all good.Still more testing to do but, hey this is good start...Hope this helps anyone experiencing the same slowness…

  I am a 12 year old who has recently gotten into programming. (Although I know that the number of books you have read does not determine your programming competency or ability, just to paint a "map" of where I am in terms of the content I know...) I've finished the books: Python 3 For Absolute Beginners Pro Python Python Standard Library by Example Beautiful Code Agile Web Development With Rails and am about halfway into Programming Ruby. I have written many small programs (One that finds which files have been updated and deleted in a directory, one that compares multiple players' fantasy baseball value, and some text based games, and many more). Obviously, as I'm not some sort of child prodigy, I can't take a formal Computer Science course until high school. I really want to learn computer science to increase my knowledge about the code, and the how the code runs. I've really become interested in the math part after reading the source code for Python's random module. Is there a place where I can learn CS, or programming math online for free, at a level that would be at least partially understandable to a person my age?

  We have developed a set of metadata fields for the user to complete during the file upload process (MOSS). What happens is that the user chooses Upload, then specifies the file on his system. Sometimes, when he sees what metadata data is required, he clicks Cancel, knowing that he cannot supply the data at that time. The file uploads, anyway, and is in the library without any attached metadata. Our client finds this unacceptable, but I haven't found a way to cancel the actual upload when the user tells us he no longer wants to do so.

• "io: postinst-must-call-ldconfig" when creating a package

  I'm trying to create an ubuntu .deb package for the (pretty awesome) Io Language. I am not the developer of that language, so I'm not familiar with its sourcecode yet. This is my first attempt at creating a .deb file. In order to create the .deb, I'm following these instructions: http://www.webupd8.org/2010/01/how-to-create-deb-package-ubuntu-debian.html So far I've been able to create a .deb file (io_2010.06.01-1_amd64.deb) and a changes file (io_201.06.01-1_amd64.changes). I'm using lintian to check the changes file, and it reports an issue I don't know how to resolve: $ lintian -Ivi io_2010.06.01-1_amd64.changes ... (lots of messages) I: io: no-symbols-control-file usr/lib/libiovmall.so I: io: no-symbols-control-file usr/lib/libgarbagecollector.so I: io: no-symbols-control-file usr/lib/libbasekit.so E: io: postinst-must-call-ldconfig usr/lib/libiovmall.so N: N: The package installs shared libraries in a directory controlled by the N: dynamic library loader. Therefore, the package must call "ldconfig" in N: its postinst script. N: N: Refer to Debian Policy Manual section 8.1.1 (ldconfig) for details. N: N: Severity: serious, Certainty: certain N: N: Removing /tmp/OYuNShEHYz ... I've read the debian manual 8.8 section. I think I understand what the problem is (I need to make sure that ldconfig is invoked "somewhere", possibly on a place called "posinst") but I don't know how to resolve it (i.e. where this "posinsts" file is and how should I change it). The current way of installing Io in Ubuntu is basically running sudo make install and then sudo ldconfig. Maybe the makefile should be modified so ldconfig is called from it? I don't know. • Homebrew requires something uninstall-developer-folder removes

  I was having trouble installing irssi (brew install irssi), so I ran brew doctor, which returned a warning mentioning an outdated copy of Xcode and saying I should run /Developer/Library/uninstall-developer-folder. Then I ran brew doctor again and got: Error: No such file or directory - /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.6.sdk How do I reinstall the SDK, or is there another way to get Homebrew working again? UPDATE: /Developer actually still exists (despite the obvious implication of uninstall-developer-folder), as does /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.7.sdk. Why does Homebrew specifically need Snow Leopard's SDK?

• NodeJS Supervisord Hashlib

  I have an problem with my NodeJS app. The problem is the include of the library Hashlib I've followed more than 10 times the instructions to install. Get a clone of the repo, do make and make install. NodeJS is installed in default path, and that's the tricky point: When I launch node app.js it works, perfectly. The problem starts when I configured my Supervisord to run with the same user, with the same config file as I have in other systems working, and I get that NodeJS can't find hashlib. module.js:337 throw new Error("Cannot find module '" + request + "'"); ^ Error: Cannot find module 'hashlib' I'm getting crazy, what can I do?! Why my user launching node from the console works great, but not the supervisord? Thanks!
