• Can Ubuntu be installed in a subdirectory of another Linux variant?

  I have access to (but not root on) a compute server which is running a Linux distribution that is a few years old. I'd much prefer to use a current Debian-like flavor. Thus, I'm wondering if it is possible to install Ubuntu (or stock Debian) in one of my directories, and use the Ubuntu programs and libraries in preference to what comes with the server. I would need to access arbitrary parts of the server's filesystem, not just the parts under the Ubuntu install. I log in by SSH, so there's no desktop environment needed. But, I would like to be able to use X programs.

• How to find manually installed packages?

  I installed a plain Ubuntu 10.10 on my computer and installed some software via apt-get. Last week I managed to break everything and just started from scratch, and I need to reinstall my software. Is there some way to create a list with all the packages that I have installed manually? So that it would give me a list like „texlive, ...“ and not „texlive, texlive-dep1, textlive-dep2, ...“ and all the standard packages removed? If I could somehow figure out which programs out of the regular install I have removed, that would be awesome too!

• Is an in-app purchase required to unlock game in order to bypass pirating acceptable?

  I'm considering writing a mobile game and looking at distribution. The game will have a server requirement, which means I will have to pay for bandwidth, hosting, processor time, etc. Because of that I'll need to make at least a little money off this thing. According to the press piracy is rampant in the android community. To get around this, I'm thinking of implementing a simple model where the game is free, perhaps allowing play for X number of turns or something, and then requiring an in-app purchase to continue to play. I would clearly explain this in the app description, and the in-app purchase would be managed per account so it would be linked to your google play account so you wouldn't have to re-purchase every time you get a new device. Would gamers accept this model or see it as unreasonable?

And following the Texture to Polygonmsample i used this line to create the shape, where farseerObject is a list of vertices of the triangles: _compound = BodyFactory.CreateCompoundPolygon(World, farseerObject, 1f, BodyType.Dynamic); But I have to update the body each frame (like 30 fps) and this is very slow. I get just 2 or 3 fps. There's another (faster) way to create the Body from a list of triangles or the contour vertices?

• Questionable ethics regarding closed source softwares which are supposed to be open source.

  Several days ago I heard a sentence "Cracking company name routers are not a crime.". I asked "Why?" and the guy explained to me that company name used a linux distribution on their routers which source can not be closed because of their license but company name closed it. What do you think about this? Doing otherwise unethical "cracking" becomes ethical, or somewhat neutral if the software in question is "cracked" too? By "cracking" I don't mean breaking into a computer through someones' company name router but "cracking" my own router's OS which otherwise would be unethical.

• If I intend to use Hadoop is there a difference in 12.04 LTS 64 Desktop and Server?

  Sorry for such a Newbie Question, but I'm looking at installing M3 edition of MapR the requirements are at this link: http://www.mapr.com/doc/display/MapR/Requirements+for+Installation And my question is this, is the Desktop Kernel 64 for 12.04 LTS adequate or the "same" as the Server version of the product? If I'm setting up a lab to attempt to install a home cluster environment should I start with the Server or Dual Boot that distribution? My assumption is that the two are the same. That I can add any additional software to the 64 as needed. Can anyone elaborate on this? Have I missed something obvious?

• How to completely turn off session saving?

  Hi all, I opened System > Preferences > Startup Application > Options and clicked on Remember currently running Applications. I suppose this makes Ubuntu memorize (save a list on some place in disk) all currently running applications and when you reboot your computer, the OS starts with everything in that list. Now I want to get rid of it. Of course I can close all applications which I do not want to start in startup, and click Remember currently running Applications again, but this doesn't seem to work as expected. For example, Yakuake opens differently if I do that. What I want is to completely turn off session saving. Maybe I can delete the stored information somehow?

• Adapting Javascript game for mobile

  I'm currently developing a Javascript web game for desktop users. It is a sort of tower-defense game that relies on mouse input only, developed on canvas using EaselJS. In the future, or perhaps simultaneously, I would like to adapt the game for mobile devices. I can see at least 3 potential areas in shifting from desktop to mobile: 1. resolution size and UI rearrangement, 2. converting mouse events to touch events, 3. distribution as native app wrapper or mobile Web. What would be the best strategy to facilitate this desktop to mobile conversion? For example, should I try to code the game for both platforms, or port the game UI over to mobile by branching the code base. Should I just publish on the mobile Web or wrap the game in a native app framework? And if I were to code for both platforms using the same codebase, should I register both click and touch events, or remap click events to touch using dispatchEvent?

• What are different ways to reduce latency between a server and a web application? [closed]

  this is a question about a web application that provides SOAP web services. For the sake of this question, this web app is hosted on a server SERVER B which is located in California. We have an automated, scheduled, process running on a server SERVER A, located in New York. This scheduled process is supposed to send SOAP messages to SERVER B every so often, but this process typically dies soon after starting. We have now been told by the vendor that reason why the process dies is because of the latency between SERVER A and SERVER B. The data traffic is routed through many diffent public networks. There is no dedicated line between SERVER A and SERVER B. As a result I have been asked to look into ways to reduce the latency between SERVER A and SERVER B. So I wanted to ask, what are the different ways to reduce latency in a situation like this? For example, would it help to switch from HTTPS to some other secure protocol? (the thought here is that perhaps some other alternative would require fewer handshakes than HTTPS). Or would a VPN help? If a VPN would reduce the latency, how would it do that? NOTE: I am not looking for an explicit answer that would work in my specific situation. I am more like looking just for a simple list of what technologies could be used for this. I will still have to evaluate the technologies and discuss them internally with others, so the list would just be a starting point. Here I am assuming that there exists very few ways to reduce latency between two servers that communicate across public networks using HTTPS. Feel free to correct me if this assumption is wrong and please ask if there is a need for specific information. NOTE 2: A list of technologies is a specific answer to the question I stated in the title. NOTE 3: Its rather dumb to close this question when it is after all about me looking for information and furthermore this information can clearly be useful for others.   I've had Kubuntu installed for several years, updating from one major release to another, and now I think I'd like to try to switch to Lubuntu. But since my distribution is already tuned and shaped to satisfy my needs, I'd like not to get a fresh installation, but just purge kubuntu-desktop and install lubuntu-desktop. But when I execute sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop, it gives me an error of the following essence: The following packages have unmet dependencies: lubuntu-desktop : Depends: usb-modeswitch but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.   I've got a new laptop which is Lenove's E420s. And I have encountered a big problem that I can't make the fingerprint reader work properly. I've also tried fingerprint-gui. But unfortunately, it's told that "No Device Found". Here is my screenshot: http://ge.tt/98Xg2WD/v/0 It's said that 147e:1002 is supported by fingerprint-gui on the official website. • (Joomla 1.6) Template position descriptions don't refresh

  I want to change a description of a template position, so when I go to Admin-Extensions-Module Manager I see a different description of a module position in the position list when I edit a module. However, when I change (for instance) the template 'beez_20' and want to rename the name of the position 'debug', I change the description (TPL_BEEZ_20_POSITION_DEBUG) in the language file 'languages\en-GB\en-GB.tpl_beez_20.sys.ini' to something different, say 'Abracadabra'. However, the changes don't appear in the position list and I can find no reference whatsoever of how or when the ini files are read or maybe cached. Does anyone has a clue?

I am looking for references that simply and clearly list common 'should do's' in terms of ui, interactions and usability. My company is new to software development and they keep getting suprised by contractors that don't do the obvious so I am looking for good references about the right way to do it and the basic things to always consider (like the above). • Ubuntu 11.04 windows XP dual boot problem

  I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 direct from installation disk in a separate partition alongside an existing Windows XP installation. Ubuntu operates fine. I can see the old XP file system and the other network computer and access the internet. The problem is when the computer starts I get the boot selection list for Ubuntu or XP; but I am not allowed to select Windows XP (I cannot scroll down the list with tab or arrows keys). This would be fine for me but the computer is used by other people who are only familiar with windows XP at the moment. I have downloaded and run Boot Repair. • Printer Sharing Issue

  So I set up my printer on 12.10 to share via SAMBA. Windows 'sees' it, it will install it on windows (I have the printer driver installs but it asks for it in Windows default list.. ?), then I can print a test page to the ubuntu printer from Windows. But If I try to print something in Notepad/Wordpad it says 'Printing' but doesn't add it to the "See whats printing" list. If you do it in Google Chrome, however, it works. Any ideas?
