• Capture *all* display-characters in JavaScript?

  I was given an unusual request recently that I'm having the most difficult time addressing that involves capturing all display-characters when typed into a text box. The set up is as follows: I have a text box that has a maxlength of 10 characters. When the user attempts to type more than 10 characters, I need to notify the user that they're typing beyond the character count limit. The simplest solution would be to specify a maxlength of 11, test the length on every keyup, and truncate back down to 10 characters but this solution seems a bit kludgy. What I'd prefer to do is capture the character before keyup and, depending on whether or not it is a display-character, present the notification to the user and prevent the default action. A white-list would be challenging since we handle a lot of international data. I've played around with every combination of keydown, keypress, and keyup, reading event.keyCode, event.charCode, and event.which, but I can't find a single combination that works across all browsers. • PyQt4: Hide widget and resize window

  Hi everyone: I'm working with several widgets but the solution just won't come out. What I have is a series of buttons in series of QHBoxLayouts. Some buttons are hidden by default, but they will appear when needed. To solve space issues, all buttons have a minimum and maximum size so they always look well packed. Also I have a QTextEdit, visible by default, which is in a QVBoxLayout with the QHBoxLayout that hold the buttons So the problem is this: When I hide the QTextEdit and show the other buttons, the window won't resize. After searching I found that using self.ui.layout().setSizeConstraint(QtGui.QLayout.SetFixedSize) will do the trick, but the problem is that it takes the maximum size from all widgets, therefore I end a huge window. Doing self.ui.layout().setSizeConstraint(QtGui.QLayout.SetMinAndMaxSize) won't resize the window I already tried using self.ui.resize(0,0), and when doing a self.ui.layout().update() I got False (which I find odd, http://doc.trolltech.com/4.6/qlayout.html#activate), and also tried to override sizeHint() but it keeps using the max size for all widgets. Is there a way to resize the window and while taking care of the min and max size of a widget? Thanks in advance

• Does DefaultAppPool run with special elevated privilegs on IIS?

  I'm running a piece of code within a web page that queries the IIS metabase using ADSI. However when I create my own app pool and leave the properties the same as the default app pool, this code fails with the following error: Caught: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException Failed to parse virtual directory: /LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT/MyAspWebsite-1-128889542757187500 System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80070005): Access is denied. What special privileges does the DefaultAppPool have? I don't see any documented. I need this to work in non default app pools, but without giving the entire worker process elevated privileges. I've also tried using the username and password parameters of the DirectoryEntry constructor, by using the Admin on the machine that IIS7 is running on, but that didn't change anything. I'll also note that this works fine on IIS6 and W2K3. Any help is appreciated.

When an interface extends TheWidgetView.MyStyle, the of the widget consumer needs to define all the styles listed in that parent interface. I've seen some widget libraries have the widget's constructor take in a ClientBundle as parameter, which I suppose could apply to CssResource. Although, I'm not sure how I'd pass in this style object in a constructor invoked by UIBinder. Thanks much in advance!

• How to disable auto-generated WCF configuration

  Every time my program runs vs adds the default configuration to my app.config file. At that run it works fine, but at the next run it actually tries to read the config. The problem is that the default configuration has errors, it adds the attribute "Address", but attritbutes are not allowed to have capitals so it throws an exception. This means I have to remove the bad section every run! I've tried to configure the .config but it gives errors.   I'm trying to find information how do we take a screenshot on Windows 7 that will actually create a screenshot file like .png in to your desktop like on mac where you can do it by press Command+Control+Shift+4. In windows all I know is that I can do it by press press = Windows captures the entire screen and copies it to the clipboard. or for the Active windows I can just do hold and press = Windows captures only the currently active window and copies it to the clipboard. Right now I'm using maComFort which it gives me functionality of Mac like keyboard that I can take screenshot in such the same way with Mac OS X but really it changes many of the key in my keyboard in the way I don't like. So I wonder if there is a better way?

  I've been struggling with vertical alignments, a seemingly simple enough process that has a lot of idiosyncrasies throughout different languages and element types. I've done a lot of reading through stackexchange and can't seem to find a common thread of understanding. Here are the rules that I have been able to gather: 1) Vertical-align does not work in <\div>s, you have to set div {display: table-cell; vertical-align: middle} This seems like a big hassle, especially since table-cells override the height limitation even when overflow is set to hidden and expands to fit content, which means the vertical "center" is variable. I just read some source-code from Pinterest where button {vertical-align: middle}, but no other vertical-align commands seem to work. It seems as if button is by default aligned in the middle. Can someone provide a clear explanation for the vertical-align attribute? What html elements respond to vertical-align? Which html elements have default vertical-align attributes? Which html elements have non-overridable vertical-align attributes? And any clues as to understanding the idiosyncracies would help as well! Thanks in advance!

  I need help setting a transparent image to the clipboard. I keep getting "handle is invalid". Following is the specific code with the complete working project at ftp://missico.net/ImageVisualizer.zip. This is an image Debug Visualizer class library, but I made to run as executable for testing. (Note that window is a toolbox window and show in taskbar is set to false.) I was tired of having to perform a screen capture on the toolbox window, open with an image editor, and then deleting the background added due to the screen capture. So I thought I would quickly put the transparent image onto the clipboard. Well, the problem is...no transparency support for Clipboard.SetImage. Google to the rescue...not quite. This is what I have so far pulled from a number of sources. See the code for the main reference. My problem is the "invalid handle" when using CF_DIBV5. I imagine the problem is related to BITMAPV5HEADER and CreateDIBitmap.   Suppose my Tomcat webapps directory looks like this: webapps/ webapps/fooapp/ webapps/fooapp/WEB-INF/ webapps/fooapp/WEB-INF/web.xml webapps/fooapp/bardir/ When I make a GET request for /fooapp/bardir, Tomcat sees that webapps/fooapp/bardir is a directory and sends back a 302 to /fooapp/bardir/ (with a slash at the end). Here is my question: Where in the Tomcat source code does this take place? (I'm looking at 6.0.x but a correct answer for any version would be a great starting point.) The only reference material I can find on this subject is in the Catalina Functional Specifications which states, regarding the Default Servlet: On each HTTP GET request processed by this servlet, the following processing shall be performed: [...] If the requested resource is a directory: If the request path does not end with "/", redirect to a corresponding path with "/" appended so that relative references in welcome files are resolved correctly. However, this functionality does not appear to be in org.apache.catalina.servlets.DefaultServlet; or at least, it's not there exclusively: if I replace the default servlet in web.xml with a servlet whose servlet-class does not exist, directory paths still come back 302 to add the slash, while every other request comes back with an error as expected.

• Creating a window manager type overlay for Mac OS X

  I want to make my own window manager for OS X, or at least give it the appearance of a new one. I have many designs written down in a book, and would like to implement them. These include altering, or even completely removing, menu bars, creating entirely new guis for switching applications, etc. I know that OS X does not have a window manager, and that basically the functions that an X11 window manager would perform are done by Carbon, Cocoa, the Dock application, and the window server. I've read that it would take an incredible amount of reverse engineering to write my own api, etc. at the hardware level. I am still not that good at programming though, and don't have that kind of time. That's why I was thinking of maybe running an application on top of OS X that will function like a separate window manager - and do everything that the normal OS GUI / window manager would do. Is this possible? For example: making a custom button that would appear upon a certain key combination, that could be clicked to access a document viewer, change the time, minimize a window, etc. Is there some way to access functionality to basic tasks / actions like this without using the default OS X button controls, and implementing them with my own GUI? I am talking about more than a simple theme change, I want to completely change the user experience. This means that this application would be run in a full screen mode that blocks out default OS X menu bars. I've heard something about using graphics architectures to plug in your own window manager? Would this be an option too? If so, how would I go about doing that? Thank you,

  I am working on a .NET project where several versions of the same type of object have been created over the life of the project - most new versions add a field or two. However, now I am looking to mitigate problems for users with an old version. My goal is that when a user tries to open an old version of the serialized object with the new program, the program will automatically assign default values to the fields that are missing from the depreciated version of the file. For example, say I had a class with two boolean fields - RepeatSound and RepeatForever. The first version of the program doesn't know how to repeat forever, so it only saved RepeatSound: <anyType xsi:type="Sound"> <RepeatSound>true</RepeatSound> </anyType> but the new files look like this: <anyType xsi:type="Sound"> <RepeatSound>true</RepeatSound> <RepeatForever>true</RepeatForever> </anyType> My goal is that when I deserialize the first file in the new program that it will create the Sound object but simply default the value of RepeatForever to false. For a project I'm working on that includes recording sound, the input levels sound a little quiet both when the route is external mic + speaker and when it's headphone mic + headphones. Does anyone know definitively whether it is possible to programmatically change mic gain levels on the iPhone in any part of Core Audio? If not, is it possible that I'm not really in "speakerphone" mode (with the external mic at least) but only think I am?   I have a question regarding an iPhone game I'm developing. At the moment, below is the code I'm using to currently I loop through my multidimensional array and position bricks accordingly on my scene. Instead of having multiple two dimensional arrays within my code as per the following (gameLevel1). Ideally, I'd like to read from a text file within my project and loop through the values in that instead. Please take into account that I'd like to have more than one level within my game (possibly 20) so my text file would have to have some sort of separator line item to determine what level I want to render. • How can I send an email from Mail.app to Outlook with an attachment that does not embed into the email body?

  I'm using Mail.app (on Mac OS X 10.6) and when I send an email to users on PC Outlook, with an attached image, they get the email as an image embedded into the body, not as an attachement. I even tried clicking "view as icon" before sending the attachment from Macmail, but that made no difference. I also tried this myself, sending from Mail.app over to my PC's Outlook, and I do get that same problem. In Outlook the image is not coming through as an attachment, but as an image embedded into the body of the email. The reason this is an issue primarily is because the user is then unable to click "save as" and has to actually copy and paste it into some other program, which means the file is converted from jpg or png to the bmp format. But beyond that, most of my recipients don't even know how to copy and paste it into another program to save it that way anyway. They need the "save attachment as" functionality.

  I'm working on wrapper for some huge unmanaged library. Almost every of it's functions can call some error handler deeply inside. The default error handler writes error to console and calls abort() function. This behavior is undesirable for managed library, so I want to replace the default error handler with my own which will just throw some exception and let program continue normal execution after handling of this exception. The error handler must be changed before any of the wrapped functions will be called. The wrapper library is written in managed c++ with static linkage to wrapped library, so nothing like "a type with hundreds of dll imports" is present. I also can't find a single type which is used by everything inside wrapper library. So I can't solve that problem by defining static constructor in one single type which will execute code I need. I currently see two ways of solving that problem: Define some static method like Library.Initialize() which must be called one time by client before his code will use any part of the wrapper library. Find the most minimal subset of types which is used by every top-level function (I think the size of this subset will be something like 25-50 types) and add static constructors calling Library.Initialize (which will be internal in that scenario) to every of these types. I've read this and this questions, but they didn't helped me. Is there any proper ways of solving that problem? Maybe some nice hacks available?

• Integrating ASP.NET MVC 2 with classic ASP

  I'm in the process of moving a large classic ASP application to ASP.NET MVC 2. Questions: My question is about project organization. I would prefer to not mix the MVC code with the ASP code in the same VS project. I'd like to have an MVC WAP with areas that match the parts of the website that I'm migrating. For instance, the old site has a folder /products/default.asp..... /products/productName/default.asp etc. In the MVC WAP, I'd like to have an area called "products", which I could then, either through a rewrite, routing, or preferably through some IIS configuration, point the "products" folder on the ASP site to. In this way, I could gradually move root folders from the ASP site to the MVC application. However, if I create the MVC WAP in a virtual folder, then my routes wind up looking like http://localhost/virtualFolder/products instead of http://localhost/products Any suggestions on how to conquer this? I know that, during deployment, I could deploy the MVC WAP into the root of the ASP site, but this doesn't help with debugging.

  I am building my first Silverlight 3 + RI Services application and need some help. It will be deployed in an controlled corporate intranet, 100% windows clients. I have started from the Silverlight Business Application template. These are my requirements: Upon launch the application needs to recognize the currently logged-in user. The application needs to have access to other properties of the user in AD, such as email, full name, and group membership. Group membership is used to grand certain features in the application. A "login as a different user" link is to be always available - Some machines are available throughout the enterprise, logged-in as a certain generic user (verified by the absence of certain membership groups). In this case one can enter credentials and log in (impersonate) to the application as a user different from the one already logged-into the machine. This user is to be used in service calls I have modified the following in the default Business Application template: App.xaml: appsvc:WindowsAuthentication instead of the default FormsAuthentication Web.config: authentication mode="Windows" With these modifications I resolve requirement #1 (get the currently logged-in user). But when I examine RiaContext.Current.User, I don't have access to other properties from AD, such as group memberships. How can I achieve my other requirements? Thanks for your help.

EDIT: Looks like Kohana ORM is not that flexible. ORM is probably not the way to go and works best for completely new projects where the data model can be altered. The reason being that the key names must follow a specific naming convention or else they won't relate in Kohana.
