• Login takes very long, annoying repaints once a minute when logged in: How to troubleshoot?

  I am suffering from a strange problem with my Gnome Shell in Ubuntu 12.10. The login takes very long ( 30 sec), with a blank screen. In Google Chrome and Thunderbird (and perhaps in other applications), the main window freezes and is repainted in periodic intervals of less than one minute. The freeze takes several seconds, and it seems that font and appearance of, e.g., tabs and buttons briefly changes. Attempting to enable the second monitor show an error message related to XRANDR. Everything seems to have started three days ago, after I had to force-shutdown the machine while it was hibernating due to low power. (It was hibernating for quite a while and didn't want to stop.) Silly me. I have tried the following measures, with no avail: Checked all package file md5 hashes using debsums Reinstalled all packages using a variant of dpkg --get-selection \* | xargs apt-get install -reinstall Temporarily moved configuration directories such as .gconf, .config and .gnome2 to another location Created a new user account When I choose "Ubuntu" during login, the problems disappear. I am sort of frustrated that reinstalling all packages didn't fix the issue. How to troubleshoot this Gnome Shell (?) problem, short of reinstalling the system? (Or did anyone see this kind of behavior on their machine?)

• Randomly Freezes - How Can I Diagnose the Problem?

  At random times, Ubuntu 10.04 freezes, and I have to do a hard shutdown. It was upgraded from 9.10 which didn't freeze. First, is this is common problem with a quick answer, and if not, what can I do to diagnose it? I've tried checking application/kernel logs, but nothing gives me a clue as to what caused the problem. My guess, is that since the OS froze, no logs could be updated. Ideas? SOLUTION: Solved it. My particular problem was my graphics card (integrated Radeon 9000 series). netconsole revealed I was getting the error: "reserve failed for wait". After trial-and-error, I manually configured my video card and disabled hardware acceleration. Completely fixed the issue. Here is what I did: Manually Created xorg.conf Ubuntu automatically configures xorg.conf and doesn't use a file. To edit this file, you have to tell Ubuntu to explicitly create one and then edit it. Here are the steps: Restart system Hold Shift as GRUB boots Select root terminal in GRUB login menu Execute: X -config xorg.conf.new Copy: cp xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf Disable Hardware Acceleration The following is specific to my Radeon card, but I'm sure other cards have a similar setup. Edit xorg.conf Find "Device" section for graphics card Uncomment "NoAccel" option and set to "True" Save + reboot Hope that helps.

• Failing SSHFS connection drags down the system

  From time to time my sshfs mount fails. All programs using the mount freeze when it happens. I can't even ls anything or use nautilus. Is there a way to find out what's the cause and how to handle it? I've noticed regular SSH sessions to the server get their fair share of Write failed: broken pipe disconnects, too. If I wait long enough (and I'm talking about 20-ish minutes, here) it will auto reconnect and things start working again.

• System Lags/Freezes when under high usgage

  I am not sure if its my GPU / Memory or Hard drive thats failing. For example if I'm runnning more than one instance of chrome and running an application that takes up a lot of resources, my system will start to lag and freeze. When I launch Photoshop the GPU feature disables automatically, this also lags when I click on menus and when working on documents in Photoshop. I really dont know where to start, if i should buy a new graphics card or test the memory or could it be my OS drive? • frequent abnormal shutdowns/system crashes

  It's been almost 5 days since I have installed Ubuntu and almost 6th time that my laptop has been crashed entirely and it shuts down abnormally. Actually, it heats up and I have to wait for 20 odd minutes before I can turn it on again. A message appears that my PC crashed due to overheating which may damage my hard disk. The crashes happened when I tried to open some application that freeze my PC not even giving me enough time to go to system monitor and end process. Sometimes the culprit application which caused crash is Ever-pad, sometime it's team-viewer, sometimes it's some other. This is something very serious. The last crash occurred at 09:14:40. Kindly click here to view system log. I want to stick to Ubuntu and the same laptop as I had serious issues with Windows and I nearly went out to dump my laptop and purchase a more powerful system. Below are my hw/os specs. • Interesting fault attempting to install Ubuntu 12.0.4.3 OR 13.10 on MSI GS70 2OD-001US

  Attempting to install Ubuntu on an MSI GS70 2OD-001US notebook pre-installed with Windows 8. For the record this is what I have attempted: All cases were attempted with Ubuntu 12.0.4.3 AND 13.10 images via USB drives Case 1 - Attempt no changes and simply boot from USB Result: It seems to want to work initially. The Ubuntu logo pops up and the dots start moving. After a few seconds the dots freeze and this screen is shown: http://i.imgur.com/C7pyMRk.jpg Case 2 - Start playing with BIOS - In Windows turning off fast boot - In BIOS turning off Secure boot - In BIOS turning off UEFI and selecting LEGACY Result: Brought to a black screen with a - blinking at me. Case 3 - Alternating BIOS settings - In Windows turning off fast boot - In BIOS turning off Secure boot - in BIOS turning off UEFI and selecting UEFI with CSM Result: Brought to a black screen no other indication of change. It's pretty frustrating to feel locked out of a laptop that I have paid good money for, I'm sure I am not alone in that case. It does however appear that there has been some success, so I am hopeful that someone might be able to help me. FYI: Dual booting is not necessary for me, if that helps at all... I'm not sure if this is a reasonable option, but if I completely wipe clean the hdds, no particle of Windows at all, would this still be a problem? Also would opening up the laptop and replacing the HDDS with brand new ones be a solution as well? Thanks for any input or suggestions.

  I have rocks orbiting moons, moons orbiting planets, planets orbiting suns, and suns orbiting black holes, and the current system could have many many layers of orbitage. the position of any object is a function of time and relative to the object it orbits. (so far so good). now I want to know for a given 2 objects(A,B), a start time and a speed, how can I work out the when and where to go. I can work out where A and B is given a time. so i just need. 1: direction to travel in from A to B(remember B is moving(not in a straight line)) 2: Time to get to b in a straight line. travel must be in a straight line with the shortest possible distance. as an extension to this question, how will i know if its better to wait, EG is it faster to stay on object A and wait for a hour when the objects may be closer, than to set off from A to B at the start. • Limiting my heavy thinking to my job [closed]

  This might be a weird problem which is only to a half relevant to actual programming, but hopefully there are people here that knows what I'm talking about. Basicly I'm proud of how I can deal with coding problems and fix them in short notice and many other aspects like building new systems and such. I'm fast on finding solutions and I often think about the impact my changes does to existing systems and so on, therefor preventing problem from arising at all and such. I am simply happy with how my mind operates when it comes to programming and I wouldn't want to change it at all. The problem, however is when I'm not programming. I find myself rather limited in social situations. I can't determine if it is through programming, but I sometimes think way to much about the consequences when it comes to being social. I know from own experience that most times you earn by not thinking about consequences, but it's hard for me not to. Often my friends tells me "I think too much" and even though I agree, I can't seem to change this behavior. My brain wants to think, and it likes to overthink simple stuff. Does anyone recognize the bad habit of not leaving advanced thinking at work, and in what way do you deal with it? If this isn't a suitable place to ask this question, I apologize and hope you may point me to the right site.

Also I've got a lot of configs which damaged my brain and I dont want to do it again:) So, can anyone please advice the best way to make a full system dump with all data, so I need only to copy-paste them to new system to get my system ready on the other machine. Or something like that? P.S. Data on my hdd is encrypted, and I'd liked and encrypted dump too. Please help:)

• Windows 7 starter will not shutdown or logoff

  Im having some problems with a friends netbook (a dell mini 10). It will not shutdown or logoff via the usual route. Whenever the shutdown/logoff button is clicked, it will briefly freeze (maybe for only a second) and then do nothing. Ive tried shutting down manually via the command line using shutdown /p but all to no avail, it just defaults back to flashing cursor in the command prompt. There doesnt seem to be any mention of a similar problem on google so i was wondering if anyone else had any ideas. Thanks oh and its runnning windows 7 starter.

• Making a class pseudo-immutable by setting a flag

  I have a java project that involves building some pretty complex objects. There are quite a lot (dozens) of different ones and some of them have a HUGE number of parameters. They also need to be immutable. So I was thinking the builder pattern would work, but it ends up require a lot of boilerplate. Another potential solution I thought of was to make a mutable class, but give it a "frozen" flag, a-la ruby. Here is a simple example: public class EqualRule extends Rule { private boolean frozen; private int target; public EqualRule() { frozen = false; } public void setTarget(int i) { if (frozen) throw new IllegalStateException( "Can't change frozen rule."); target = i; } public int getTarget() { return target; } public void freeze() { frozen = true; } @Override public boolean checkRule(int i) { return (target == i); } } and "Rule" is just an abstract class that has an abstract "checkRule" method. This cuts way down on the number of objects I need to write, while also giving me an object that becomes immutable for all intents and purposes. This kind of act like the object was its own Builder... But not quite. I'm not too excited, however, about having an immutable being disguised as a bean however. So I had two questions: 1. Before I go too far down this path, are there any huge problems that anyone sees right off the bat? For what it's worth, it is planned that this behavior will be well documented... 2. • Do you feel bad when you have to learn new things?

  New thing is not always cool. I see many people say they are very bored by doing the similar things day after day. For me it's the opposite - I'm always learning something new. During the last one and a harf year, nearly every two months I need to do lots of researches on a totally new topic: RTMP, MP4, SIP, VNC, Smooth streaming, ..., I have to read lots of specifications, download tones of open source projects to understand concepts, and turn them into my runnable code. And it was so bad! My brain has never been very sure and very familiar with anything, and when it's close to be sure and familiar, it'll have to switch to next thing. I kind of envy people who build upper level applications because they can be very focusing, and their knowledge set includes most things their job requires. Everything is quite measurable, direct and straightforward. Have you ever had the similar feeling? I'm thinking of asking my boss to assign me some other piece of work so that I work like moving forward on a broad road instead of figuring out a way in the dark, I think it'll be more relaxing, any suggestion?

  I got a brain teaser for you - it's not as simple as it sounds so please read and try to solve the issue. Before you ask if it's homework - it's not! I just wish to see if there's an elegant way of solving this. Here's the issue: X-number of friends want's to go to the cinema and wish to be seated in the best available groups. Best case is that everyone sits together and worst case is that everyone sits alone. Fewer groups are preferred over more groups. Sitting alone is least preferred. Input is the number of people going to the cinema and output should be an array of integer arrays that contains: Ordered combinations (most preferred are first) Number of people in each group Below are some examples of number of people going to the cinema and a list of preferred combinations these people can be seated: 1 person: 1 2 persons: 2, 1+1 3 persons: 3, 2+1, 1+1+1 4 persons: 4, 2+2, 3+1, 2+1+1, 1+1+1+1 5 persons: 5, 3+2, 4+1, 2+2+1, 3+1+1, 2+1+1+1, 1+1+1+1+1 6 persons: 6, 3+3, 4+2, 2+2+2, 5+1, 3+2+1, 2+2+1+1, 2+1+1+1+1, 1+1+1+1+1+1 Example with more than 7 persons explodes in combinations but I think you get the point by now. Question is: What does an algorithm look like that solves this problem? My language by choice is C# so if you could give an answer in C# it would be fantastic!

• How to uninstall AMD Display Driver from other install of Windows

  So my Windows 7 had a BSOD from an Ati driver file then restarting only gives me some wierd coloured lines at the top of the screen. Starting in safe mode causes the boot up to freeze at AtiPcie.sys and overlays the same coloured lines on the safe mode start up display. It seems to be a problem with the display driver but I can't get into the OS at all to uninstall it. Luckily I have an old install of Windows 7 from when I moved to a SSD still on my HDD and that runs just fine so I'm pretty sure its a software problem (Maybe the SSD corrupted a driver file or something). So does anyone know how I can uninstall the driver files from another Windows 7 install on the same PC? EDIT: What I mean is, I'm running on the broken PC right now but using a different HDD's windows install. I have full access to the not booting up OS drive with the Windows so I can delete any files/load the registry etc...

• Is there a standard way to track 2d tile positions both locally and on screen?

  I'm building a 2D engine based on 32x32 tiles with OpenGL. OpenGL draws from the top left, so Y coordinates go down the screen as they increase. Obviously this is different than a standard graph where Y coordinates move up as they increase. I'm having trouble determining how I want to track positions for both sprites and tile objects (objects that are collections of tiles). My brain wants to set the world position as the bottom left of the object and track every object this way. The problem with this is I would have to translate it to an on screen position on rendering. The positive with this is I could easily visualize (especially in the case of objects made of multiple tiles) how something is structured and needs to be built. Are there standard ways for doing this? Should I just suck it up and get used to positions beginning in the top left? • How do I prevent software packages from being downloaded until I know it's safe?

  Recently, an update that caused a problem with Gnome session caused me to lose a day's work. The solution was to rollback some packages to a previous version. The update manager is now telling me that my old packages should be updated: ... but I don't want to do that until I know that whatever bug or problem the latest version has is resolved. I understand that with any upgrade that there is a risk of instability. However, in the 8 years or more that I've been on Ubuntu, using the latest releases has been stable enough and with the benefit of the latest features and security. So, I'm not looking for general advice on how to handle upgrades. What I'm saying is that in this one particular instance, the bug introduced by these upgrades is severe and time wasting. But, as an end user, when I encounter a problem like this, I have no idea how to address a specific concern about a specific package. I don't, for example, know which of these packages is the problem, and I can't take time from my work schedule to be experimenting with each package. So, my question is: How do I find out who exactly is responsible for these, or any, packages so that I can contact them and let them know about the problem? • Windows 7 - cannot access my own external disk

  I use Windows 7 Home Premium and external USB disk with NTFS partition. I cannot write-access the my own files on it, even as a member of Admnistrators group! Is there any way how to go around this permission checking, without actually writing some permission information to every folder on it? I have 3 external disks (up to 1TB), and I have thousands hundreds of files on each!!! Doing some permission change, that will actually go recursivelly through all folders on all my disks is plain brain damage!! 1) Is there any way how to change it somehow globally? (like mount options...) .. Or how to go around this annoying permission checking? It was working in Win XP normally! 2) if not, and I must do the recursive operation on all folders, how to do it PERMANENTLY, so that I don't need to do it again on another Windows 7 computer!

• Linux freezes every few seconds

  We're having an issue where one our Linux boxes (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, running on EC2 with a quadruple-large size, 68GB of RAM and 8 virtual cores with 3.25GHz each) freezes up every few seconds. Typing in an ssh session will freeze, and running strace on one of the Postgresql processes that's running usually shows: 02:37:41.567990 semop(7831581, {{3, -1, 0}}, 1 for a few seconds before it proceeds (it always gets stuck at that semop). OProfile shows that most of the time is spent in the kernel (60%) versus 37% in Postgresql. The result of these halts (which began suddenly a day ago) is that load on the box has gone from 0.7 to 10+, and causes our entire stack to slow done. Any ideas on how to track down what's going on? iostat doesn't show the disks being particularly slow or overloaded, and top shows user cpu % spike from 8% to about 40% whenever these back-ups happen.

• Netbeans hard freezes Windows XP, how to debug

  I get this problem about once to twice a day while editing in netbeans. I will be editing some code in Netbeans and I get a hard freeze requiring a full reboot. There hasn't been any correlation with an actual event that I can tell. Sometimes it's when I focus, sometimes while typing, sometimes while clicking on another window. I need to figure out how to track down what's causing the problem, as no error is generated when this happens. No error in Netbeans logs or Windows logs. I've also tried letting it sit to see if it recovers, and it's definitely stuck. I haven't had any problems with other apps running JRE, so I'm thinking it's Netbeans itself. I can't submit a bug report because I can't get a log or any reproduce-able explanation of the problem.

• Windows 7 slowing down during hard drive activity

  Sometimes when normally using my PC, it will (seemingly) randomly slow down, and maybe sometimes even freeze for several seconds. During this slow down period, it looks like a (I don't know which drive it is) hard drive is constantly being written to. During the last slow down, I started Windows's Ressource Monitor and found out that the System process was writing up to 10MB/s to a drive (I suspect it's the system drive, C:\, but I don't know for sure). I'm not doing anything unusual (at least, I don't think I am), and most of the time, it will work normally, but, as I said, it just randomly slows down for some times. Any ideas on what might be causing this and how I can prevent this from happening again? (I have a triple-core processor and 4GB of RAM. My system drive is a WD Caviar Black 500GB, my secondary, 'data' drive is a Samsung drive, which I don't know the model number of, but I can look it up. I can also post my full PC specs if needed.)

  When I connect my iPhone 3GS to my PC, iTunes "freezes": Activity Monitor shows iTunes as "Not Responding". The iPhone indicates that it is being charged, and otherwise seems normal. When I disconnect the iPhone, iTunes immediately returns to normal operation. Connect again, and instant freeze again. I have rebooted the PC, uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it and have reset the iPhone. No help. Everything worked fine yesterday. I haven't installed software or changed anything since the last time I synced. iPhone 3GS is running version 3.1.2(7D11). It is jailbroken.

• Valid path to deploy vm on host

  I've recently added a VM to the library in SCVMM to use with MS Test Pro 2010, and run into a problem. I cannot import it using test pro, it just won't give me any option to import in the lab manager. Also, if I try to deploy it back to the host it came from, it gives me a error saying the path is not valid. Anyone have any insight into this? Also, SCVMM seems to freeze everytime I try to create a new VM from the template of the VM I've stored in the library, the same one thats giving me the problem when I try to deploy it on to the host. • Network tries to reindentify itself now and then

  When the computer starts up it connects itself to the router (ZTE 4G router) automatically, but after I have surfed the web for a while, it tries to identify itself, meaning you get that little blue circle next to the little screen at the corner. When browsing it does not cause any problems, but if I'm streaming a video the video will then stop, I'll have to refresh the page to make the video start again. And if I'm playing a game, LoL for example, the game will freeze for about 2 seconds then continue again (due to lost connection to the internet). I have no virus on my computer, although I had before. I have reset my router, restarted my computer, updated my ethernet driver, checked so that the IPv4 is set on automatic and tried different router channels. I have had this router for a few months and the problem just started recently. Here is the ipconfig screen:

• Monitor sometimes display weird colors and lines when opening a website that contains a video

  This happens 1/50 times when I open a website that contains a video. I don't know if it happens when I open a flash video, but I am sure it has happened when I've opened a HTML5 video. When it happens I have about 2-3 seconds to press Alt + F4 (to close my browser). If I do it in time the screen will get back to normal. If I wait too long to press Alt + F4, maybe 3+ seconds, my screen won't get back to normal when I press Alt + F4. However, when I get stuck in the weird screen I can do all types of things on the computer. the whole computer does not freeze, because if I for example press Win + L I will hear the Windows logout sound.
