Terminal / Panel PC - Single Server Solution: Client/Server or RDP?

Hi, Our current setup involves a touch screen panel pc with embedded windows, that is connected via network to a server / dedicated pc, within the same physical location. Each of our 'units' has this hardware setup. For a quick resolution we deploy our application to the dedicated pc, and have the panel pc remote desktop to an account which then activates the application. This works but seems a little clunky / rough approach. We did this because the panel pc is rather limited. Now that we have more time, I was wondering if I should separate the application into a gui / application. Deploy the gui logic on the panel pc, and the business/database logic on the dedicated pc. The app is in Java so I was wondering what technology would be best? I was thinking of using RMI, but its not really a client/server app, as there is only one client. Should I stick with RMI, or use Sockets or something else? It will be easy to implement as the application is old, and manually wraps and unwraps data which passes through one class / method call to remote services. All I would have to do is 'RMI' this one method call, and the app will do its own stuff. Cheers.

I want to create a client-server game that runs on Game Maker HTML5-NodeJS. The NodeJS server will be an AI server - a bot that acts like a human opponent and plays against the human player at a front-end game client that is coded in GM HTML5. How can a NodeJS server be used from GM HTML5. Are there any examples of such a system? I already got an iOS game that can talk to a remote AI server (coded in Lua) using TCP sockets. Can this be done with Game Maker HTML5 and NodeJS.

I just read a wonderful article about headaches web developers have to live with nowadays. Several questions from that article busied me for some time as well. Now I am wondering whether I missed something, whether there are approaches other than Sproutcore or Cappucino to combine the eternal detached worlds of backend and frontend. How to only write validations once? How to collect business logic in only one model? Are we heading toward a combination of CouchDB Views, NodeJS and minimalistic client-side scripts including plenty of XHR requests? Or shall we follow the direction of handling everything except the database on client side? Is everything about JavaScript? I simply ask for approaches of setting up the next web application, for best practices and promising new technologies and frameworks.

I am developing software that uses many calls to a server. On a client side it's a Silverlight application. Almost every time a user clicks on a button in it, it sends 1-5 WCF calls to a server. There can be up to dozen or so users at a time. The server is a database server that serves data to a client. I am an intermediate level developer and am thinking about caching some data and syncing my changes from time to time. Are there any official solutions or technologies for it, like, patterns and such?

Simple continuously running XMPP client in python

I'm using python-xmpp to send jabber messages. Everything works fine except that every time I want to send messages (every 15 minutes) I need to reconnect to the jabber server, and in the meantime the sending client is offline and cannot receive messages. So I want to write a really simple, indefinitely running xmpp client, that is online the whole time and can send (and receive) messages when required. How does a client find the port number of a server?

Hello all, I am currently learning about basic networking in java. I have been playing around with the server and client relationship between two of my computers. However, I cannot figure out how distributed programs (say, a videogame), can not only find the 'host' computer, but also the port number on which the server is running in order to create a Socket between the two computers. The only way I really see to create a Socket is with an already known IP Address, and with a known port number. How do you search a LAN network for another computer (host) searching for clients? How do you determine what port the server is located on without 'pinging' all available ports for a response (which, I understand, is bad form... Something about 'server attack'...)? In such a situation as a video game, there can be any number of computers on the same network, and any number of them might be attempting to host, or otherwise running the application. Any other important information, or perhaps reference to a more detailed tutorial than the one I am using, regarding making connections on so very little information on the client side would be appreciated. What time to display in text messages in multiplayer game?

Say I'm having a multiplayer RTS game. There's a main server for each individual game and several clients connected to it. All packets are sent to server first and then server retransmits them back to clients. Say Server is located in one time-zone and all of the clients are in different time-zones. ClientA send a text message in chat at 12:03, what times should be stamped for other clients? Should his message be uniformely timestamped by Server (12:02) or each client should timestamp the message whenever it is recieved (12:04, 16:04, 03:03, etc..). Bear in mind, that all the messages are to be in the same order on all clients, server takes care of that. So thats the question - use local time for each client or use global server time to timestamp chat messages?

Silverlight, Flash, or JavaScript for web app that runs client-side, or just stick with C#?

Silverlight, Flash, and JavaScript, oh my.. I have a couple of applications that I need to develop for one of my business partners that will be distributed to dozens of people. These applications will need to be able to query information from the internet (query via Google, grab feeds from our other sites, just general web access) and save files to their computer. The reason I want to host the application is so that it all can be centrally managed, and any updates would be instantly deployed to everyone that uses the service. There always seems to be headaches with developing a pure desktop app in a language like C# with regards to making sure people use the latest version, don't have some odd problem with the installer, etc. Since we don't want to tie up our server's CPU I want effectively all of the processing done client-side. Meaning that they would log into their account, access the app, and then all the work done within the app is all handled by their machine. Only specific data would be sent back to the server. So - which language is best for this? Microsoft's Silverlight, Adobe's Flash, or Sun's JavaScript? I've heard a lot of good things about Silverlight and have wanted to try it for some time. I've only done extremely limited JavaScript programming, and absolutely none with Flash. Or, with my main requirement being that the client does all of its own processing should I just stick with C#? Also, is there any way to integrate a C# app into a webpage? I've never even considered it (or have any idea if it's even possible) until just now. Thanks in advance! -Sootah

I have server objects that have corresponding client objects. The data to be kept in sync is inside the server object's key/value dictionary. To keep the client objects in sync with the sever objects, I want the server to send the key/value dictionary every frame for each object. What data-structure/algorithm will allow me to send a list of key/value dictionaries using the least amount of bits? Bonus constraint 1: For each type of object, the values of some keys change more often than others. Bonus constraint 2: Memory usage on the server side is relatively expensive.

WCF operationcontract with List type unavailable in (Silverlight) client

This is the first time I have tried returning a List of data to a Silverlight client, so I'm having trouble getting the client to recognize this operationcontract. All others are fine. I have a method on the server called ReadOwFileData that needs to return a List. ReadOwFileDataCompletedEventArgs shows up in the Object Browser in the client, but not ReadOwFileDataAsync. What I want is similar to the tutorial here. The Dictionary collection type on the client is set to System.Collections.Generic.List. I tried deleting and recreating the service reference. Web.Config on the server is using basicHttpBinding. Asign Id's dynamically to DOM elements with javascript.

Hello everybody, I just have a quick question about how to generate id's on-the-fly for HTML elements. So far I've tried a few things, I started with a "for" loop, I already know how many elements I have to generate Id's for, in this case I have an "ul" with 6 "li". My "for" loop is as follows: var items = $("ul li").length; for(var i = 0; i <= items; i++){ $("ul li").attr("id", "number" + i); } "number" would be the new id concatenated with "i", so I get a different Id for each "li". As you can probably tell, this does not work, because I end up with the same Id for each "li": in this case I get <li id="number6">... </li> for all the "li" elments in the "ul". I tried a "while" loop and ".each()" with jQuery but I get the exact same thing. Any help would be appreciated.

Is there a Hyper-V virtual machine client for XP? Linux? Mac? I'm aware that we could VNC or RDP into the virtual machine but the problem is if the VM is not running or is suspend the end user can't start it and IT needs to get involved. I guess what I'm looking for is something like VMconnect.exe that runs on xp or linux. Or, If I am totally barking up the wrong tree let me know. ;-)

SQL 2008 R2 Named Instance Client Connectivity Issues?

We're upgrading our software from using SQL 2000 to 2008 R2. Our customers will be installing an update which uninstalls 2000 and installs 2008 R2 under the same instance. So if no instance existed, then no instance name will be set (default). However, the problem starts with the customers which have a named SQL instance. Starting in 2008 R2 (not sure of ones before), for some reason, a client connecting to the server by its instance name is unsuccessful. I'm testing from the Management Studio - if I can't connect this, then nothing can connect. I browse network servers, and find the specific server\instance in the list. But, upon trying to connect to an instance name like MyServer\INST, I get: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1) I do in fact have TCP/IP and Named Pipes protocols enabled, this is the first thing I did. When I connect to the server using a comma (,) and port number like MyServer, 49195, it works just fine. So it appears that client computers are just unable to identify the instance names. This has happened on all our installations of SQL 2008 R2 and from all client computers, including Win 7, XP, Vista, Server 2008, and Server 2003. We never experienced such issues on earlier versions of SQL. The problem even persists if the firewalls and antiviruses are all disabled. Now, this is a large update which we will be distributing soon to all our customers, and we want to minimize the interaction they need with us to get this installed. We absolutely hate the idea of using a port number, because it will always be different, and we would have to modify each client to point to this server/port. Some of our customers may have hundreds of client computers. How do I make client connections to a named SQL instance work again? After all, this is the whole purpose of named instances, and if a client can't connect to this instance by its name, then what is it even named for? EDIT It was mentioned to make sure SQL Browser is running, so I checked, and it is running. The server is also able to connect to its self (locally) - just external connections are refused. UPDATE After more careful checking, I learned the firewall wasn't completely disabled when testing, and upon disabling it completely, this works. So it appears that SQL Browser is being blocked by the firewall from external clients from accessing.

Apache returns 304, I want it to ignore anything from client and send the page

I am using Apache HTTPD 2.2 on Windows. mod_expires is commented out. Most other stuff are not changed from the defaults. gzip is on. I made some changes to my .js files. My client gets one 304 response for one of the .js files and never gets the rest. How can I force Apache to sort of flush everything and send all new files to the client? 403 error after adding javascript to masterpage for sharepoint.

I am attempting to add highslide-with-html.js from http://highslide.com/ to my masterpage. I am receiving a 403 forbidden error when I use the provided masterpage. I have placed it in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\1033. Test javascript files such as pirate.js which consists solely of alert("Arr!"); have loaded from the same directory. I have provided the code for the masterpage. Filtering at server or at client?

I am thinking about how to build advertise site which works like twitter. That means, most user don't not visit the site by browser, they should run a dedicated client application on their PC or smart phone. Then they set some filters about what kind of advertise they like. And when new post that fulfill their needs appear, the client will make a notification. To make that client as real time as possible, it has to poll the server within a short time interval. The problem is, should I do the filtering at the server side when client polls, or should I simply transfer all new posts to client and let client do the filtering? Making server side filtering might cause too much CPU cycles of server, but transferring every post blindly to client might waste a lot of bandwidth. Just a brain game. :)

How can I maintain local LAN access while connected to Cisco VPN? When connecting using Cisco VPN, the server has to ability to instruct the client to prevent local LAN access. Assuming this server-side option cannot be turned off, how can allow local LAN access while connected with a Cisco VPN client? I used to think it was simply a matter of routes being added that capture LAN traffic with a higher metric, for example: Network Destination Netmask Gateway Interface Metric 10.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 10.0.0.3 10.0.0.3 20 <--Local LAN 10.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 192.168.199.1 192.168.199.12 1 <--VPN Link And trying to delete the 10.0.x.x -> 192.168.199.12 route don't have any effect: >route delete 10.0.0.0 >route delete 10.0.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0 >route delete 10.0.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0 192.168.199.1 >route delete 10.0.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0 192.168.199.1 if 192.168.199.12 >route delete 10.0.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0 192.168.199.1 if 0x3 And while it still might simply be a routing issue, attempts to add or delete routes fail. Wifi Direct P2P-go and P2P-client support in ubuntu

I am trying to get wifi direct working on a laptop with ubuntu 12.04 When I type the command 'iw list' it doesn't show P2P-client or P2P-go under 'supported interface modes.From http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Documentation/iw/replace-iwconfig I found that 'iwconfig' was replaced with 'iw'.Does it mean that my hardware doesn't have support for wifi-direct or is it just the software(drivers) issue? If is it just sofware issue please help me to find the right drivers which support wifi-direct.
