  • Programming jobs for a science based degree [on hold]

    I am currently in my last year of a Masters in Physics at Uni and I am looking to go into a job that is mainly programming based. As part of my course we have learnt C++, Matlab and as a hobby I taught myself HTML, CSS, JAVA and a bit of JavaScript. After getting to this stage in my degree I've realised that its actually the programming side of Physics that I enjoy most. I've been working on a few Android apps & websites in my spare time but only things that utilize what I know in JAVA, HTML etc. Using Physics in programming is good fun but I don't want to limit myself just to Physics based jobs. I just want to know a few things: What kind of jobs can I apply for that would require the kind of skills I already posses/can work towards possessing in a year Can I compete with graduates who have had a lot more programming in their course for example Computer Science? Are there any specific extra things I need on my CV before I start applying for these jobs?

  • Deepest sense of programming [closed]

    I suffer on depression for a few months. Programming was one of my big passions (as a hobby). I had a motivation to achieve my goals (projects), to read books and articles about it to have interest in algorithms and data structures, compilers etc. Then, my mind started to think that it has no sense, that the result is useless. I realized, that I loved programming because of an illusion that it has deep sense, that I love playing with code every day as nothing else with feeling that it leads somewhere. Could I rationalize that it has sense to work on some programming project? That there is a deep sense to do it and enjoy this activity? I have no idea what else should I do in the free time, the mornings without motivation are very depressing. It was nice time when I had an illusion that programming is enjoyable. Could you help me to figure out the deepest sense of programming in this world? Why to love it again? What everything could be achieved and realized? (things like higher salary and ego are not what I'm looking for)

I have 2 years at college left. 2) If I am to pursue a career in game programming, and I select to go only with c++ and DirectX, is it enough? is assembly language necessary? 3) is Visual C++ or MFC dead? should I invest in it or not? 4) I am unable to find any reference book for Visual C++ 2008 or later (just like C++ the complete reference book) I need a book that covers the basic fundamentals and covers the most of the libraries etc.

  • Duck type testing with C# 4 for dynamic objects.

    I'm wanting to have a simple duck typing example in C# using dynamic objects. It would seem to me, that a dynamic object should have HasValue/HasProperty/HasMethod methods with a single string parameter for the name of the value, property, or method you are looking for before trying to run against it. I'm trying to avoid try/catch blocks, and deeper reflection if possible. It just seems to be a common practice for duck typing in dynamic languages (JS, Ruby, Python etc.) that is to test for a property/method before trying to use it, then falling back to a default, or throwing a controlled exception. The example below is basically what I want to accomplish. If the methods described above don't exist, does anyone have premade extension methods for dynamic that will do this? Example: In JavaScript I can test for a method on an object fairly easily. //JavaScript function quack(duck) { if (duck && typeof duck.quack === "function") { return duck.quack(); } return null; //nothing to return, not a duck } How would I do the same in C#? //C# 4 dynamic Quack(dynamic duck) { //how do I test that the duck is not null, //and has a quack method? //if it doesn't quack, return null }

  • How to pick a great working team?

    I've just finished my master and I'm starting to dig into the laboral world, i.e. learning how programming teams and technology companies work in the real world. I'm starting to design the idea of my own service or product based on free software, and I will require a well coupled, enthusiast and fluid team to build and the idea. My problem is that I'm not sure which would be the best skills to ask for a programming team of 4-5 members. I have many friends and acquaintances, with whom I've worked during my studies. Must of those ones I have in mind are very capable and smart people, with a good logic and programming base, although some of them have some characteristics that I believe that could influtiate negatively in the group: lack of communication, fear to debate ideas, hard to give when debating, lack of structured programming (testing, good commenting, previous design and analysis). Some of them have this negative characteristics, but must of them have a lot of enthusiasm, nice working skills (from an individual point of view), and ability to see the whole picture. The question is: how to pick the best team for a large scale project, with a lot of programming? Which of these negative skills do you think are just too influential? Which can be softened with good leadership? Wich good skills are to be expected? And any other opinion about social and programming skills of a programming team.

    We are building a product for Procurement Domain in JAVA. Following are the main technical requirements. Platform Independent Database Independent Browser Independent In functional requirements the product is very dynamic in nature. The main reason being the procurement process around the world is different from client to client. Briefly we need to have a dynamic workflow engine and a dynamic template engine. The workflow engine by which we can define any kind of workflows and the template engine allows us to define any kind of data structures and based on definition it can get the user input through workflow. We have been developing this product for almost 2 years. It has been a long time till we can get down with the dynamics of requirements. Till now we have developed a basic workflow and template engine and which is in use at one of the client. We have been using following technologies. GWT-Ext (Front End Framework) Hibernate (Database Layer) In between we have faced some issues with GWT-Ext (mainly browser compatibility) and database optimization due to sub classing in hibernate. For resolving GWT-Ext issue, which a dying community so we decided to move to SmartGWT. In SmartGWT we faced issues related to loading and now we are able to finalize that GWT 2.3 will be the way to go as the library is rich and performance is upto the mark. We are able to almost finalize GWT-Spring based front and middle layer. In hibernate, we found main issues with sub-classing due to that it was throwing astronomical queries and sometimes it would stop firing any queries for 5-10 seconds or may be around 30 seconds and then resume again. Few days back I came to one article related to ORM. I am a traditional .Net SQL developer and I have always worked with relational database. Reading through this article, I also found it relating to the issues I face. I am still not completely convinced of using hibernate and this article just supported my opinion. Following are the questions for which I am looking for an answer. Should we be going with Hibernate in case of dynamic database requirements and the load of the data will be heavy in future? How can we partition the data, how we can efficiently join the data, how we can optimize the queries? If the answer is no then how do we achieve database independence? Is our choice related to GWT and Spring proper or do we need to change that too? Should we use any other key value pair database if the data is dynamic in nature and it is very difficult to make it relational?

    I'm creating a jqgrid with drop down columns and I'm using cell editing. I need the options of the drop down columns to change dynamically and I've tried implementing this by setting the column to be: { name: "AccountLookup", index: "AccountLookup", width: 90, editable: true, resizable: true, edittype: "select", formatter: "select" }, and then in the beforeCellEdit event I have: beforeEditCell: function(id, name, val, iRow, iCol) { if(name=='AccountLookup') { var listdata = GetLookupValues(id, name); if (listdata == null) listdata = "1:1"; jQuery("#grid").setColProp(name, { editoptions: { value: listdata.toString()} }) } }, GetLookupValues just returns a string in the format "1:One;2:Two" etc. That works fine however the options are populated one click behind - ie i click on AccountID in row 1, and the dropdown is empty, however when I then click on AccountID in row 3 the options I set in the row 1 click are shown in the row 3 click. And so on. So always one click behind. Is there another way of achieving what I need? Bacially the dropdown options displayed are always changing and I need to load them as user enters the cell for editing. Perhaps I can somehow get at the select control in the beforeEditCell event and manually enter its values instead of using the setColProp call? If so could I get an example of doing that please? Another thing - if the dropdown is empty and a user doesn't cancel the cell edit, the grid script throws an error. I'm using clientarray editing if that makes a difference.     This is driving me crazy :-) I'm trying to get a ASP.NET 3.5 GridView to show a selected value as string when being displayed, and to show a DropDownList to allow me to pick a value from a given list of options when being edited. Seems simple enough? No surprise there. I load the list of values for the DropDownList into a local member called _pbxTypes in the OnLoad event of the form. I verified this - it works, the values are there. Now my challenge is: when the grid goes into editing mode for a particular row, I need to bind the list of PBX's stored in _pbxTypes. Simple enough, I thought - just grab the drop down list object in the RowEditing event and attach the list: protected void grvSecondaryLocations_RowEditing(object sender, GridViewEditEventArgs e) { grvSecondaryLocations.EditIndex = e.NewEditIndex; GridViewRow editingRow = grvSecondaryLocations.Rows[e.NewEditIndex]; DropDownList ddlPbx = (editingRow.FindControl("ddlPBXTypeNS") as DropDownList); if (ddlPbx != null) { ddlPbx.DataSource = _pbxTypes; ddlPbx.DataBind(); } .... (more stuff) } Trouble is - I never get anything back from the FindControl call - seems like the ddlPBXTypeNS doesn't exist (or can't be found). What am I missing?? Must be something really stupid.... but so far, all my Googling, reading up on GridView controls, and asking buddies hasn't helped. Who can spot the missing link? ;-) Marc

So do excuse me if somehow I mess it up. Question: Let's say I have class A,B,C and D now class A has some piece of code which I need to have in class B,C and D so I am extending class A in class B, class C, and class D Now how can I access the function of class A in other classes, do I need to create an object of class A and than access the function of class A or as am extending A in other classes than I can internally call the function using this parameter. If possible I would really appreciate if someone can explain this concept with code sample explaining how the logic flows. Note Example in Java, PHP and .Net would be appreciated.

  • Silverlight 3 Dynamic DataGrid RowStyle Ignored

    I subclassed the standard DataGrid into SpecialDataGrid so I could override the KeyDown/KeyUp events. Other than that SpecialDataGrid is exactly the same as DataGrid. At run-time I dynamically create a bunch of these SpecialDataGrids. When a user clicks a row in the grid it hightlights, which is fine, but when that grid loses focus, it leaves a residual gray highlight on the last-selected row, which is not fine. I've heavily edited the RowStyle and CellStyle I'm applying to these Grids to more-or-less remove all formatting. I even added a static SpecialDataGrid to the app with test data so I could see if the RowStyle was somehow incorrect, applying the same RowStyle and CellStyle that I'm applying to the dynamically generated one (you'll see it in the code below). What I saw was that the "test grid" showed up exactly as I wanted, and the real grid is ignoring part of the RowStyle! Has anyone run into this issue or have any ideas of how to correct it?     Hello everyone I'm trying to use the Wizard control as follows: 1 - In the first step (first screen) has a cheklistbox with several options 2 - For each option selected, will be created an extra step 3 - In some steps may be set up intermediate stages Me problem is that each step is a usercontrol. So if the first step I select option1 and option3, I should create two more steps with usercontrol1 and UserControl3 .... Someone already did something similar? I will try explain better the problem.     Hi Guys I've been working as a developer for the past 4 years, with the 4 years previous to that studying software development in college. In my 4 years in the industry I've done some work in VB6 (which was a joke), but most of it has been in C#/ASP.NET. During this time, I've moved from an "object-aware" procedural paradigm to an object-oriented paradigm. Lately I've been curious about other programming paradigms out there, so I thought I'd ask other developers their opinions on the similarities & differences between these paradigms, specifically to OOP? In OOP, I find that there's a strong focus on the relationships and logical interactions between concepts. What are the mind frames you have to be in for the other paradigms? Thanks Dave

  • Why aren't we programming on the GPU???

    So I finally took the time to learn CUDA and get it installed and configured on my computer and I have to say, I'm quite impressed! Here's how it does rendering the Mandelbrot set at 1280 x 678 pixels on my home PC with a Q6600 and a GeForce 8800GTS (max of 1000 iterations): Maxing out all 4 CPU cores with OpenMP: 2.23 fps Running the same algorithm on my GPU: 104.7 fps And here's how fast I got it to render the whole set at 8192 x 8192 with a max of 1000 iterations: Serial implemetation on my home PC: 81.2 seconds All 4 CPU cores on my home PC (OpenMP): 24.5 seconds 32 processors on my school's super computer (MPI with master-worker): 1.92 seconds My home GPU (CUDA): 0.310 seconds 4 GPUs on my school's super computer (CUDA with static domain decomposition): 0.0547 seconds So here's my question - if we can get such huge speedups by programming the GPU instead of the CPU, why is nobody doing it??? I can think of so many things we could speed up like this, and yet I don't know of many commercial apps that are actually doing it. Also, what kinds of other speedups have you seen by offloading your computations to the GPU?

  • WPF ToolTip Style with dynamic LayoutTransform

    I have an app that scales it's UI and I want to scale the ToolTips with it. I have tried doing this: <Style TargetType="{x:Type ToolTip}"> <Setter Property="LayoutTransform" Value="{DynamicResource scaleTransf}"/> ... </Style> ...where scaleTransf is a resource that I change via code: Application.Current.Resources["scaleTransf"] = new ScaleTransform(...); Most of the ToolTips do get scaled in size but some of them that are created by C# code don't get scaled. I've checked and it seems that I don't set their Style or LayoutTransform by code, so I don't really understand what is going wrong... Moreover, I have the impression that the above XAML code worked fine a few days ago. :( Is there sth I can do to make it work all the time without setting the LayoutTransform in code-behind? EDIT : The ToolTips that don't change scale are the ones that have become visible before. We both have a set of keyboards, mice, and we have two monitors, which works well for switching who's the driver really easy, but there are some points in the session that I would like to start writing tests at the same time that my pair is writing implementation. I am wondering if there is any program that would allow me to have effectively two cursors and keyboard focuses on the same computer. If they don't exist then I am willing to experiment with my own solution, but I would like input as to how to best accomplish this. I am most familiar with .Net 3.5 technologies, but I also know Java and am willing to learn C++ to solve this problem. If I was creating the solution myself I would go down the road of being able to grab the input of one hardware device (i.e. a specific mouse that's installed) and prevent Windows from moving the pointer, and instead move my own programs pointer independently.

    I have a query where I'm trying pivot row values into column names and currently I'm using SUM(Case...) As 'ColumnName' statements, like so: SELECT SKU1, SUM(Case When Sku2=157 Then Quantity Else 0 End) As '157', SUM(Case When Sku2=158 Then Quantity Else 0 End) As '158', SUM(Case When Sku2=167 Then Quantity Else 0 End) As '167' FROM OrderDetailDeliveryReview Group By OrderShipToID, DeliveryDate, SKU1 The above query works great and gives me exactly what I need. However, I'm writing out the SUM(Case... statements by hand based on the results of the following query: Select Distinct Sku2 From OrderDetailDeliveryReview Is there a way, using T-SQL inside a stored procedure, that I can dynamically generate the SUM(Case... statements from the Select Distinct Sku2 From OrderDetailDeliveryReview query and then execute the resulting SQL code?
