• Training v. Teaching

Yesterday, I had my first day in an academic classroom. I immediately noticed a difference with the interactions between the students. They don't act like students in a professional training or conference talk. I wanted to use this opportunity to enumerate some of those differences. The immediate thing I noticed was the lack of open environment. This is not to say the class was hostile towards me. I am used to entering the room, bantering with audience, loosening everyone a bit, and flowing into the discussion. A purely academic audience does not banter. At least, they do not banter on day one. I think I can attribute this to two factors. This first is a greater perception of authority. In a training or conference environment, I am an equal with the audience. This is true even if I am being a subject matter expert. We're all professionals. We're all there to learn from each other, share our stories, and enjoy the journey. In the academic classroom, there was a distinct class difference. I had forgotten about this distinction; I had the professional familiarity with the staff by the time I completed my masters. This leads to the other distinction. These was an expectation of performance. At conference and professional training, there is generally no (immediate) grading. This may be a preparation for a certification exam, but I'm not the one responsible for delivering the exam. This was not the case in the academic classroom. These students are battling for points, and I am the sole arbiter. These students are less likely to let the material wash over them, applying the material to their past experiences. They were down taking notes. I don't want to leave the impression that there was no interact in the classroom. I spent a good deal of time doing problems with the class on the whiteboard. I tried to get the class to help me work out the steps. This opened up a few of them. After every conference or training class, I always get a few people that will email me afterward to continue the conversation. I am very curious to see if anybody comes to my office hours tomorrow. However, that is a curiosity that will have to wait until tomorrow.

• Gartner PCC Follow-up: Interview with Chaeny Emanavin, Usability Lead - Office of Information Develo

  Last week at the Gartner Portals, Content and Collaboration conference in Baltimore, Chaeny and I co-presented on Oracle Enterprise 2.0 and BIA's Citizen Portal. Chaeny's presentation about the BIA solution was very well received and I wanted to do a follow-up interview with Chaeny to discuss more details about their solution and its Enterprise 2.0 features. Ajay: What were the main objectives for the BIA Citizen Portal? Chaeny: The BIA Citizen Portal is designed to provide all the services of the Bureau of Indian Affairs to the community of 564 federally recognized tribes that include over 1.9 million American Indians and Alaska Natives. The BIA provides the same breadth of services that the entire U.S. Federal Government provides in one small Bureau. So, we needed a solution that was flexible enough to handle content ranging from law enforcement to housing to education. Key objectives for external users was to use the Web as a communications channel and keep them informed on what services are available. We also wanted to build an internal web presence and community for BIA's 5000 employees to ensure that they update their content, leverage internal experts and create single sources of truth for key policy documents. Ajay: How is the project being implemented? Chaeny: We are using a phased approach. In phases 1 & 2, interim internal and external sites were built to ensure usability and functional requirements are being met. In Phases 3 & 4, we built out a modern internal and external presence using Oracle WebCenter Suite and Oracle Universal Content Management (UCM), including enabling delegated content management for our internal business units. Phase 4 was completed in January 2010. Phase 5 will add deeper Enterprise 2.0 collaboration capabilities to the solution. Ajay: Are you integrating any existing sites into the new solution? Chaeny: Yes, we have a SharePoint implementation that we are using for document management. We needed more precise functionality however. We found that SharePoint would let individual administrators of a SharePoint site actually create new sites. In a 3 months span, we had over 200 new sites created and most were not being used. So, we had an enormous sprawl problem. Our requirements mandated increased governance and more granular control over the creation of sites and flexible user access to content. In SharePoint this required custom code and was very time-intensive which was unfeasible given our tight deadlines. We are piloting Oracle WebCenter Spaces as our collaboration solution to mitigate these issues. However, we must integrate our existing SharePoint investment which we can do easily by using the SharePoint connectors available in Oracle WebCenter and UCM. Ajay: What were the key design parameters for your solution? Chaeny: We wanted everything driven by standards and policies. We created a cross-functional steering group called the Indian Affairs Web Council to codify policies that were baked into the system. Other key design areas were focused on security/governance, self-service content management, ease of use, integration with legacy applications and seamless single sign-on. We are using Dublin Core as our metadata standard. We also are using Java, APEX, and ADF as our development standards. Ajay: Why was it important to standardize on a platform? Chaeny: We initially looked at best-of-breed solutions, but we faced a lot of issues getting the different solutions to work together. Going with an integrated solution was more economical, easier to learn and faster to deliver the solution. Ajay: What type of legacy applications are you integrating into the portal? Chaeny: Initially we are starting with administrative apps such as people directory and user admin and then we will integrate HR and Financial applications among others. Ajay: Can you describe some of the E20 collaboration features you are putting into the solution? Chaeny: We are adding Enterprise 2.0 using Oracle WebCenter Spaces to deliver different collaboration tools such as wikis, blogs and discussion forums. Wikis to create rapid, ad hoc monthly roll-up reports; discussion forums to provide context-specific help; blogs to capture tacit organization knowledge from experts, identify gurus and turn tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge. Ajay: Are you doing anything specifically to spur adoption and usage? Chaeny: Yes, we did several things that I think helped us ramp quickly. First, we met our commitments for the new system launch date and also provided extra resources for a customer support "hotline" during the launch period. Prior to launch, we did exhaustive usability studies to capture user requirements around functionality, navigation and other key interaction areas. We also created extensive training programs so that the content managers in each business unit were comfortable using the content management tools and knew the best practices for usage. Finally, to launch the Enterprise 2.0 collaboration capabilities, we are working with a pilot group from the Division of Forestry and Wildland Fire Management of BIA. This group of people in the past have been willing early adopters and they have a strong business need to collaborate with many agencies both internal and external across State, County and other Federal jurisdictions. Their feedback is key to helping us launch Enterprise 2.0 successfully in our broader organization. Ajay: What were the biggest benefits to internal BIA employees and to the external community of users? Chaeny: For our employees, the new Enterprise 2.0-based solution will make it easier to find information; enhance employee productivity by embedding standard business processes into the system and create more of a community by creating connections with experts via social collaboration to ultimately provide better services more quickly. For the external American Indian and Alaska Native communities, we have a better relationship with the users and the new site has improved BIA's perception as a more responsive and customer-centric organization.

  ASA Spoke to Spoke Communication I have been looking at spke to spoke comms or "hairpining" for months and have posted on numerouse forums but to no avail. I have a Hub and spoke network where the HUB is an ASA Firewall version 8.2 * I basicaly want to allow 2 spokes to be able to communicate with each other.   I have a Ubuntu server running in an ESV VM emvironment and I've installed a webserver with this configuration: Nginx 1.0.5 PHP 5.3.6 with PHP-FMP Mysql 5.1.62 I have an installation of latest version of joomla on this server and when I try to upload an install package (zip file containing joomla's extension files) I get "502 Bad Gateway" with the following error in nginx log file: 2012/05/13 11:22:21 [error] 19911#0: *20 upstream sent invalid status "-1 Copy failed" while reading response header from upstream, client: 10.10.56.70, server: localhost, request: "POST /administrator/index.php?option=com_installer&view=install HTTP/1.1", upstream: "fastcgi://127.0.0.1:9000", host: "radio.xx.xx", referrer: "http://radio.xx.xx/administrator/index.php?option=com_installer" I've searched all over the internet and I've changed too many parameters of php configuration, fpm config and nginx config including increasing execution times and etc but my problem still remains. I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with my Joomla and problem is in webserver but there's no usable log messages, except above message. Can anyone help me with this problem?

• Minimizing SQL transaction log file size on developer box running simple recovery model

  We have alot of SQL servers on development environment where we never take backup of the databases (TFS for code is enough). The (SharePoint) databases are all set to simple recovery model, but the log files, especially for the SharePoint configuration database is growing quite large and filling up our data drive on the SQL server. Since these log files are never used for anything, i would like advice on how to best minimize the size of these log files -or even disable them if possible. I'm not completely sure why the log files grow so large even on simple logging (checked for long running transactions (DBCC OPENTRAN) but found none). I guess the reason for the log files not being truncated is, that we dont take any backups, and hence Checkpoints arent reached. The autogrowth for log files are set to autogrow by 10% restricted to 2 gb, so i guess that is why Checkpoint (70%) arent reached here either. What would be the be best strategy to keep log files small (best case 0) without sacrificing performance (eg VLF fragmentation)?

• Vertex 2 SSD is running faster than my Vertex 3 SSD?

  I used Acronis Disk Director to do a direct clone of my C:\ windows 7 x64 drive from my Vertex 2 to my new Vertex 3 SSD (Just to show the drive software winstall everything is identical.) I ran a performance test on Windows using the Windows Experience Index. The rating I am receiving when booting on the Vertex 2 is 7.5 While I am getting only a rating for the Vertex 3 of 6.9 My understanding is that the read/write speeds of the Vertex 2 is only up to 250MB/sec while the Vertex 3 is up to 500MB/sec. Copying a single file (3GB in size) from the Vertex 3 to itself was getting speed of approx 70-80MB/sec This speed is no better (maybe worse) than what I got from the Vertex 2 I am connected via the SATA 3 port on the motherboard, using an SATA 3 cable Is this issue caused by the drive cloning? Do I have a bad SSD?

  I have an interesting DNS question (well interesting to me atleast). I just installed an hmail server in our remote office to act as an MX backup in the event our exchange server goes down. The 2 host names are mail.campbellsurvey.com mail2.campbellsurvey.com mail points to the address 98.XXX.91.XXX mail2 points to the address 70.XXX.190.XXX How would I setup a PTR record on the ISP end to reflect both hostnames? Does the PTR have to point to EXACTLY mail.campbellsurvey.com or can it point to just campbellsurvey.com? because right now anything passing through the primary static address in our pool (the one used for standard internet) is identified as mail.campbellsurvey.com. My only idea to fix this was to move the mail server to the next available address and give it only it the name mail.campbellsurvey.com but I wanted to see if there was another way. Nothing happens. I just get a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner. I then have to switch of the power button to get it to reboot.   I'm running Centos with Kloxo CP and PureFTPd on VPS based on HyperVM. The problem - during the day, there are periods when FTP wors fine for hours, but sometimes it dies with "500 Unknown command" code. for files larger than 2Kb. This is really weird - with files less than 2472-2484 bytes everything would work fine, but with bigger files ftp would start writing file, would drop on 2Kb and would return "500 Unknown command" . This happens on Passive AND/OR Active connections for any filetypes. Logs are showing like the file was uploaded successfully , but the speed nearby the action would be 0.3 -0.5 Kb , when normal operation would report 70-150Kb/s speeds. I do have some Iptables firewalls on both HyperVM host,and VPS , however these are static, and most of the time it works just fine. Any suggestions on where to look for a solution would be appreciated :)

• How to simulate slow internet connection

  I currently deploy with GAE (google app engine) and I try to implement some AJAX validation. So I got a couple text-fields and "spinners" (ajax loaders) which should be displayed when an AJAX request is sent. But I deploy on my local computer (localhost), so the GAE SDK reacts very fast on any request. It takes about 50-70 ms(miliseconds) to perform the whole ajax request, which is far far away from the real. Is there a way to somehow simulate slow Internet connection? I just want to see how my "spinners" work. I want to test some ajax setting (jquery) about timeouts, errors and so on... Any ideas ?

• SOHO NETGEAR wireless router disconnects when downloading torrents

  I have a NETGEAR WGT624 router at home which dies when there is a heavy torrent load. I open up my torrent client and it downloads for about 5 to 10 minutes and it continues to increase the number of seeds (goes up to 70-80 seeds), but after that the router simply fails and I have to restart it in order to get an internet connection again. Is there any way that I can fix this? New router firmware? Change some router options? Feed it a cookie? Anything?

  I'm using apache with mysql on the other server, apache on windows 2003 with 4gb ram 3 dual core CPU My server keep on running smoothly without any issue for about 3 days or roundabout 60+ hours however between 60-70 hours my apache stop working & log events shows this error, I tried to search a lot but helpless, I have already increased max port, please if someone can help ?
