• Book Review: Professional ASP.Net MVC4

  The past few weeks have been particularly busy as I continue to dedicate a bigger portion of my free time to refreshing my memory and enhancing my knowledge of best practices pertaining to technologies we plan on using for a major upcoming project. In this blog post, I will be providing a brief overview of my latest reading “Professional ASP.Net MVC4” by Jon Galloway, Phil Haack, Brad Wilson and K. Scott Allen. This book is a must read for web developers looking to enhance their MVC expertise with best practices and tips shared from recognized industry experts. This book takes the reader on a 16-chapter long journey towards being a better ASP.NET MVC developer with chapter 16 putting all information covered in practical context by dissecting the implementation of Nuget.org, a real-life open-source, ASP.NET MVC project.  All code samples referenced in this book are conveniently accessible via NuGet, a free, open-source Library package manager that installs as a Visual Studio Extension. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 thoroughly cover MVC’s various components: Controllers “C”, Views “V” and Models “M” respectively. Chapter 5 covers additional extension methods (Helpers) provided to speed and ease the use of common HTML elements such as forms, textboxes, grids, to name a few… Chapter 6 tackles built-in validation while providing examples and use cases on implementing custom validation that plugs into the MVC framework. Chapters 7 thru 13 discusses the latest on Membership, Ajax, Routing, NuGet and the ASP.Net Web API. Chapters 12 (Dependency Injection) and 13 (Unit Testing) demonstrate a big competitive advantage of MVC with its ease of test-ability and plug-ability. • On developing deep programming knowledge

  Occasionally I see questions about edge cases and other weirdness on Stack Overflow that are easily answered by the likes of Jon Skeet and Eric Lippert, demonstrating a deep knowledge of the language and its many intricacies, like this one: You might think that in order to use a foreach loop, the collection you are iterating over must implement IEnumerable or IEnumerable<T>. But as it turns out, that is not actually a requirement. What is required is that the type of the collection must have a public method called GetEnumerator, and that must return some type that has a public property getter called Current and a public method MoveNext that returns a bool. If the compiler can determine that all of those requirements are met then the code is generated to use those methods. Only if those requirements are not met do we check to see if the object implements IEnumerable or IEnumerable<T>. That's cool stuff to know. I can understand why Eric knows this; he's on the compiler team, so he has to know. But what about those who demonstrate such deep knowledge who are not insiders? How do mere mortals (who are not on the C# compiler team) find out about stuff like this? Specifically, are there methods these folks use to systematically root out such knowledge, explore it and internalize it (make it their own)?

• How to schedule dynamic function with cron job?

  I want to know how I can schedule a dynamic(auto populated data) function to auto run everyday at saved time? Let's say I have a form that once the button is clicked it sends the data to the function, which the posts the data. I simply want to automate that so that I don't have to press the button. <ul> <?php foreach($Class->retrieveData as $data) { <form method="post" action=""> <li> <input type="hidden" name="name">'.$data['name'].'<br/> <input type="hidden" name="description">'.$data['description'].'<br/> <input type="submit" name="post_data" value="Post"> </li> </form> } ?> </ul> Now, the form will pass the data to the function. if(isset($_POST['post_data'])) // if post_data button is clicked then it runs myFunction() { myFunction(); } myFunction() { $name = $_POST['name']; $description = $_POST['description']; } I tried doing the following but the problem is that Cron Job can only run the whole .php file, and I am retrieving the saved time to run from MySQL. foreach($Class->getTime() as $timeData) { $timeHour = $timeData['timeHour']; $timeMinute = $timeData['timeMinute']; $hourMin = date('H:i'); $timeData = ''.$timeHour.':'.$timeMinute.''; if($hourMin == $timeData) { run myFunction. } } $hourMin is the current hour:minute which is being matched against a saved time to auto run from Mysql. So if $hourMin == $timeData then the function will run. How can I run Cron Job to auto run myFunction() if the $hourMin equals $timeData? So... List 1 = is to be runned at 10am List 2 = is to be runned at 12pm List 3 = is to be runned at 2pm The 10am, 12pm, 2pm is the $timeHour and $timeMinute that is retrieved from MySQL but based on each list id's. EDIT @randomSeed, 1) I can schedule cron jobs. 2) $name and $description will all be arrays, so the following is what I am trying to accomplish. $name = array( 'Jon', 'Steven', 'Carter' ); $description = array( 'Jon is a great person.', 'Steven has an outgoing character.', 'Carter is a horrible person.' ); I want to parse the first arrays from both $name and $description if the scheduled time is correct. (I'd show what I have tried, but I have searched for countless hours for an example of what I am trying to accomplish but I cannot find anything and what I tried doesn't work.). • Best Method For Evaluating Existing Software or New Software

  How many of us have been faced with having to decide on an off-the-self or a custom built component, application, or solution to integrate in to an existing system or to be the core foundation of a new system? What is the best method for evaluating existing software or new software still in the design phase? One of the industry preferred methodologies to use is the Active Reviews for Intermediate Designs (ARID) evaluation process.  ARID is a hybrid mixture of the Active Design Review (ADR) methodology and the Architectural Tradeoff Analysis Method (ATAM). So what is ARID? ARD’s main goal is to ensure quality, detailed designs in software. One way in which it does this is by empowering reviewers by assigning generic open ended survey questions. This approach attempts to remove the possibility for allowing the standard answers such as “Yes” or “No”. The ADR process ignores the “Yes”/”No” questions due to the fact that they can be leading based on how the question is asked. Additionally these questions tend to receive less thought in comparison to more open ended questions. Common Active Design Review Questions What possible exceptions can occur in this component, application, or solution? How should exceptions be handled in this component, application, or solution? Where should exceptions be handled in this component, application, or solution? How should the component, application, or solution flow based on the design? What is the maximum execution time for every component, application, or solution? What environments can this component, application, or solution? What data dependencies does this component, application, or solution have? What kind of data does this component, application, or solution require? Ok, now I know what ARID is, how can I apply? Let’s imagine that your organization is going to purchase an off-the-shelf (OTS) solution for its customer-relationship management software. What process would we use to ensure that the correct purchase is made? If we use ARID, then we will have a series of 9 steps broken up by 2 phases in order to ensure that the correct OTS solution is purchases. Phase 1 Identify the Reviewers Prepare the Design Briefing Prepare the Seed Scenarios Prepare the Materials When identifying reviewers for a design it is preferred that they be pulled from a candidate pool comprised of developers that are going to implement the design. The believe is that developers actually implementing the design will have more a vested interest in ensuring that the design is correct prior to the start of code. Design debriefing consist of a summary of the design, examples of the design solving real world examples put in to use and should be no longer than two hours typically. The primary goal of this briefing is to adequately summarize the design so that the review members could actually implement the design. In the example of purchasing an OTS product I would attempt to review my briefing prior to its distribution with the review facilitator to ensure that nothing was excluded that should have not been. This practice will also allow me to test the length of the briefing to ensure that can be delivered in an appropriate about of time. Seed Scenarios are designed to illustrate conceptualized scenarios when applied with a set of sample data. These scenarios can then be used by the reviewers in the actual evaluation of the software, All materials needed for the evaluation should be prepared ahead of time so that they can be reviewed prior to and during the meeting. Materials Included: Presentation Seed Scenarios Review Agenda Phase 2 Present ARID Present Design Brainstorm and prioritize scenarios Apply scenarios Summarize Prior to the start of any ARID review meeting the Facilitator should define the remaining steps of ARID so that all the participants know exactly what they are doing prior to the start of the review process. Once the ARID rules have been laid out, then the lead designer presents an overview of the design which typically takes about two hours. During this time no questions about the design or rational are allowed to be asked by the review panel as a standard, but they are written down for use latter in the process. After the presentation the list of compiled questions is then summarized and sent back to the lead designer as areas that need to be addressed further. In the example of purchasing an OTS product issues could arise regarding security, the implementation needed or even if this is this the correct product to solve the needed solution. After the Design presentation a brainstorming and prioritize scenarios process begins by reducing the seed scenarios down to just the highest priority scenarios.  These will then be used to test the design for suitability. Once the selected scenarios have been defined the reviewers apply the examples provided in the presentation to the scenarios. The intended output of this process is to provide code or pseudo code that makes use of the examples provided while solving the selected seed scenarios. As a standard rule, the designers of the systems are not allowed to help the review board unless they all become stuck. When this occurs it is documented and along with the reason why the designer needed to help the review panel back on track. Once all of the scenarios have been completed the review facilitator reviews with the group issues that arise during the process.   What's the best way to merge 2 or more dictionaries (Dictionary<T1,T2>) in C#? (3.0 features like LINQ are fine). I'm thinking of a method signature along the lines of: public static Dictionary<TKey,TValue> Merge<TKey,TValue>(Dictionary<TKey,TValue>[] dictionaries); or public static Dictionary<TKey,TValue> Merge<TKey,TValue>(IEnumerable<Dictionary<TKey,TValue>> dictionaries); EDIT: Got a cool solution from JaredPar and Jon Skeet, but I was thinking of something that handles duplicate keys. In case of collision, it doesn't matter which value is saved to the dict as long as it's consistent.

• How to choose between protobuf-csharp-port and protobuf-net

  Hi Folks, I've recently had to look for a C# porting of the Protocole Buffer library originally developped by Google. And guess what, I found two projects owned both by two very well known persons here: protobuf-csharp-port, written by Jon Skeet and protobuf-net, written by Mark Gravell. My question is simple: which one do I have to choose ? I quite like Mark's solution as it seems to me closer to C# philisophy (for instance, you can just add attributes to the properties of existing class) and it looks like it can support .NET built-in types such as System.Guid. I am sure both of them are really great projects but what's your oppinion?

  Hi, I've trying to use the API for CapsuleCRM... http://capsulecrm.com/help/page/api_gettingstarted I've been reading some articles on SOAP in asp.net and I just don't get it. Most of them seem to be ablut creating a web service, not using it and none of them seem to explain how to use basic HTTP authentication. I have got as far as constructing the XML i want to send to the API but I could really do with seeing some example code which makes an http call using http authentication to a SOAP API. Maybe I'm just searching for the wrong thing but I've drawn a blank so far. Can anybody show me how? Jon

• How to check misspelled email during user registration

  I use an email registration and confirmation in my project (yes, I know about OpenID. In my counry, a main email service lack it). Sometimes users misspell their email addresses. I know about this due to "message could not be delivered" letters in a mailbox. A misspelled address is absolutely correct, because I check it with a regular expression - say, jon[email protected] intstead of [email protected]. And I do not want to duplicate a email field in a registration form (who likes it?). Request processing routine cannot wait for email delivery - it could take an unpredictable time. So, my script will return to user a confirmation message "An email was sent". And the user will wait for it forever (of cause, not - he/she will turn to an alternative project with a more perfect registration system). Does someone knows how it can be improved (in any programming language)?

  Hi, All the applications I have ever seen, that use UINavigationBars, have the UINavigationBar right at the top of the app. If you want to use a UISearchBar then it's usually in the 'header' of the UITableView such as this... What I would like to do is to put a UISearchBar object above/outside of the UINavigationBar/Controller, but i've been having some problems doing this. Firstly, is what I want to achieve even possible? What would the easiest way to do this be? Starting with the navigation based application seems to make the navigationbar/view un-resizeable!   Hi All, I'm going to sound like a complete newbie here but here goes... I've just signed up for a Windows Azure account and was hoping to get a simple hello world aspx page up and running in a browser to see how it all works but I can't seem to find a simple guide to getting a very simple web application running. I've got as far as setting up a "service" and going onto the "deploy" page but it's asking me upload an "application package". I've looked on MSDN but there aren't any simple guides, just reams of documentation talking about "roles" and "development fabric". For somebody that is proficient in HTML/CSS and knows a little abit about asp.net it may just as well be in another language. So, does anybody know how to upload a simple aspx page and then access it in a browser? Jon

  I have a many to many relationship in my models and i'm trying to reorganize it on one of my pages. My site has videos. On each video's page i'm trying to list the actors that are in that video with links to each time they are in the video(the links will skip to that part of the video) Here's an illustration Flash Video embedded here Actors... It doesn't seem to be possible in the template using djangos orm. I've tried a couple things with creating dictionaries/lists but i've had no luck. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  Hi, Recently I have joined a new project team where in the java application logs have logged messages in a non-formal way[can't think of suitable word]. here how they look :-) <message> for info messages :-| <message> for warn :-( <message> for error besides there's also ASCII art drawing , different one for each log when that particular service starts up or is killed .And there many more styles for certain application events. iam not sure if it has any significant overhead on the application or not. • Do you have to install the REST starter kit in asp.net to access APIs?

  Hi, I'm currently trying to access a REST API for the first time using visual web developer 2008 express edition. Every article I have found says you have to install the WCF REST starter kit which is a .msi file, which would suggest that I have to install it on my machine and presumably our server too. My question is this. Is there a non installable version that I can use, e.g. just by dropping DLLs into the Bin directory and then using the classes contained. Or is there more to it than that and am I just getting very confused about how it works? Jon
