  • How to disable OSD notifications for specific email addresses?

    I receive several logs per day via email, either from testing operations, server status or backup resumes. Can I some how disable the notification balloon either by a specific email address, the email subject or any other possible filter, as to not be constantly notified about the success operations? I've looked within the Notify OSD Configuration, but couldn't find any option to this end. Since the email comes with different information when errors occur, I already have filters within Thunderbird as to move error logs to a folder that I keep tabs on... If relevant, I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 fully updated, and Thunderbird 15.0.1.

    Background: I need to build a main application with some operations (CRUD and more) (-in winforms), I need to make another application which will re-use some of the functions of the main application (-in webforms). I understood that using service layer is the best approach here. If I understood correctly the service should be calling the function on the BL layer (correct me if I'm wrong) The dilemma: In my main winform UI - should I call the functions from the BL, or from the service? (please explain why) Should I create a service for every single function on the BL even if I need some of the functions only in one UI? for example - should I create services for all the CRUD operations, even though I need to re-use only update operation in the webform? YOUR HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED

  • Methods of ordering function definitions in code

    When I work on some programming project (usually command line application in Python with many switches), I'm usually creating about 30 and more functions. Most of the functions are in one file (except some helpers that I utilize in more projects). Some of the functions are called on particular switch (like -p or --print) but many functions do some helper computations, print operations or database operations because I don't want to main functions be too large. When I have an idea for a new functionality I often put new functions randomly to the file. Should I think more about it and place it to some particular place? Are there some methods for this?

    We ran some benchmarks using FusionIO ioDrive2 SSD drives and Oracle NoSQL Database. FusionIO has published a whitepaper with the results of the benchmarks. "Results of testing showed that using an ioDrive2 for data delivered nearly 30 times more operations per second than a 300GB 10k SAS disk on a 90 percent read and 10 percent write workload and nearly eight times more operations per second on a 50 percent read and 50 percent write workload. Equally impressive, an ioDrive2 reduced latency over 700 percent (seven times) on inserts in a 90 percent read and 10 percent write workload and over 5800 percent (58 times) on reads in a 50 percent read and 50 percent write workload."

  • Red Gate join the SSIS custom component club

    I recently noticed that Red Gate have launched themselves into the SSIS component market by releasing a new Data Cleanser component, albeit in beta for now. It seems to be quite a simple component, bringing together several features that you can find elsewhere, but with a suitable level  polish that you’d expect from them. String operations include find and replace with regular expressions, case formatting and trim, all of which are available today in one form or another, but will the RedGate factor appeal to people? Benefits include ease of use, all operations in one place, versus installing a custom component which many organisations do not like. I’m also interested to see where they take this and SSIS products in general, as it almost seems too simple for RedGate, a company I normally associate with more advanced problem solving. Perhaps they are just dipping a toe in the water with a simple component for now?

The dilemma (simple but I still need some more experienced opinions): In my main winform UI - should I call the functions from the BL - bl.getcustomers(), or do it similar to how I call it in the webform, and call the functions from the service - webservices.getcustomers? Should I create a service for every single function on the BL even if I need some of the functions only in one UI? for example - should I create services for all the CRUD operations, even though I need to re-use only update operation in the webform?   • Get script for every action in SQL Server Management Studio

    I am always conscious to keep a record of all operations performed on my database servers. Operations through T-SQL in an SSMS query pane can easily be saved in query files. For table modifications through SSMS designer I have predefined setting to generate T-SQL scripts. However there are numerous database and server level tasks that I use the SSMS GUI and I would like to have a script of these changes for later reference. Examples of such actions through the SSMS GUI are backup/restore, changing compatibility level of a database, manipulating permissions, dealing with database or log files or creating/manipulating any login/user.     My workflow includes some steps that make me wait for 0.5 to 2 minutes to complete: long remote git operations, creating / rebooting an instance in the cloud, etc. It's safe to assume that these operations cannot be made any faster. The resulting delays are the biggest flow-breakers for me. These are too long to just sit and stare at the progress indicators, but too short to take a walk and grab a coffee. Temptation to check some websites is big, and it's often a road to 20-30 minutes of procrastination + the time to get into the flow again. What are your coping strategies?

    I know these principles: Define the constrains and operations,eg constrains are the rules that you cant pass and what you want determined by the end goal, operations are actions you can do, "choices" . Buy some time by solving easy and solvable piece. Halving the difficulty by dividing the project into small goals and blocks. The more blocks you create the more hinges you have. Analogies which means : using other code blocks, yours or from other programmers . which has problem similar to the current problem. Experiments not guessing by writing "predicted end" code, in other word creating a hypothesis, about what will happen if you do this or that. Use your tools first, don't begin with a unknown code first. By making small goals you ll not get frustrated. Start from smallest problem. Are there other principles?
