  • How does JSON compare to XML in terms of file size and serialisation/deserialisation time?

    I have an application that performs a little slow over the internet due to bandwidth reasons. I have enabled GZip which has improved download time by a significant amout, but I was also considering whether or not I could switch from XML to JSON in order to squeeze out that last bit of performance. Would using JSON make the message size significantly smaller, or just somewhat smaller? Let's say we're talking about 250kB of XML data (which compresses to 30kB).

  • Getting the position of the element in a list when it's drag/dropped (ui.sortable)

    Hi, I have a sortable list like this one: http://jqueryui.com/demos/sortable Is it possible to get the start and end position of the element in the list, when it has been moved? I'm talking about their position number, in the list. For example, if I move element 2 to position 5 in the list, I'd like to assign those two numbers to variables. I'm new to jQuery - any help would be much appreciated.

  • Looking for early paper about compiling object-oriented code

    I remember reading a paper a long time ago that talked about object-oriented programming. I believe that this was from the early 1980s or perhaps even before then. This was at the time when object-oriented programming was still done through pre-processors, and one thing that stuck with me is this: it argued that you could write code in either procedural or object-oriented fashion, and after preprocessing/compiling, you would end up with the exact same machine code. Does anybody know which paper I'm talking about?

    I'm trying to run through this msdn article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd723645.aspx One of the steps is: In the class file for the page, change the base class from UserControl to EntityTemplateUserControl. Nowhere is it made clear what page is being referenced. Can someone help me? I don't see any relevant class in the pages I have, so I assumed maybe they were talking about the ascx and didn't really mean page, but I'm not seeing an option there either.

Let the code do the talking: public class Test { public static void main(String[] args) { SimpleDateFormat frmt = new SimpleDateFormat(); frmt.applyPattern("yyyy-MM-dd"); GregorianCalendar date = new GregorianCalendar(2012,1,1); System.out.println(frmt.format(date.getTime())); } } The output is: 2012-02-01 The expected output is of course: 2012-01-01 What am I doing wrong?

    I need to recreate an effect that mint.com has on another website. When you go to the transactions page and click on one of your transactions a tab pops up underneath that says edit details. When you click on that tab a div will drop down exposing more details about the transaction.     At one point while traveling the web, I came across a great page which contrasted the clarity and terseness of different methods of doing a sequence of operations without having to make a bunch of throwaway variables, e.g., Var1, Var2, Var3.     if i use the custom css generator on their webpage i can have a wider width than 960? so isnt the name 960 kind of misleading? and some persons say that you cant have a flexible grid system (that changes with your browser size) with 960. but you can download a fluid version from the custom css generator. so apparently they didnt know what they were talking about? would be great if someone could straight these things out.
