  • Web page looks good in FF but every other browser hates it

    I am trying to make my own website and it was comming along quite nicely. It looked beautiful in firefox when opened and worked wonderfully. But then I run it in any other browser... and it screwes up... how can I fix this? IE especially hates it =[ you just gota see it to know what I'm talking about so here is the link http://opentech.durhamcollege.ca/~intn2201/brittains/chatter/ please give solutions that don't involve javascript.     I feel rather foolish as this is just a short question. I was reading about a bunch of thread management helper classes in .net, specifically one that aids the storage of threads to help a service manager object automatically invoke delegates onto the subscribing thread. I'm pretty sure it had something to do with creating dispatchers. Totally forgotten the name, can't find it :( Anyone know what I'm talking about?

    Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? I'm talking about applets like this http://dan-ball.jp/en/javagame/dust/ I'm really interested in how they work, it seems more like fluid-dynamics than regular game physics. Does anyone know any open source variations, or any hints on how they might work? I think it would be really fun and challenging to work on something like this, but I'm not sure where to start researching... Thanks :)

Does all other desktop/mobile browser except IE6 supports HTML 5 without adding JavaScript? Will every browser render CSS written for HTML 5 elements? What about Screen- readers?     I vaguely remember reading a blog entry (written by a well-known blogger I think) about how to model price changes over time, and that you could model most changes by saving two dates only (two columns in a db). The blog talked about prices on a website changing over time and how you could figure out the right price to charge knowing only when the purchase had been made. Very vague, I know, but my google-fu is failing me, everyone at IRC are busy talking about other stuff and I don't know what to do! :)

    in .net Claim-based identity framework If i wanted to restrict users to do an operation (view or edit) on let's say an account, a particular account #123456.(i am talking about business entity, like a bank account.) Is it a good idea to create a claim for each account they can view or edit? Any disadvantages of having a lot of claims in a set? a system admin might have access to all accounts in the system thus creating hundreds of claims (maybe more than one for each account)

  • Best way to display a background with a pattern in an iPhone/iPad app

    Here's an example of the type of background image I'm talking about... Clearly, there's a pattern in it. My question is, if this were an iPad app and the background image was twice the size, would there be any significant benefits to taking advantage of this pattern by tiling the image? Or would it really make no difference in terms of performance and just be easier to load the entire image into a UIImageView? Thanks in advance for all your wisdom!

    I don’t fully understand the second parameter of string.Equals, and this is because I can’t find any examples of when it would actually make a difference. For example, the example given here is the same, regardless of the value of the second parameter (aside from IgnoreCase): http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/c64xh8f9.aspx I am just talking about the values StringComparison.CurrentCulture, InvariantCulture, or Ordinal. I can understand the difference between these and their IgnoreCase equivalents.

  • rsyncing - ignoring checksums

    Trying to copy a bunch of data over and time, unfortunately, is of the essence. I'd like to do an rsync of all the data in one direction, pretty much rsync just clobbers what's over on the destination server. Is there a way to do an rsync and just say, "overwrite all files" Is there a better way of doing this? We're talking 500GB of data that only has to go in one direction.

    I recently started using Linux and was floored by the ease with which windows can be moved and resized with simple keyboard combinations using Compiz. If I want to move a terminal to top-right of the screen a simple CTRL+ALT+Numpad9 does the trick for me, and it resizes the window at the same time. I'm sure you guys know what I'm talking about. I would like to know if there is a way to do this in windows. Thanks.

  • Is it common practice to put keywords in html markup for SEO?

    Though it's on the edge of programming questions, I think this is still relevant here, as only those of us actually doing the coding for a site would be considering this. I've been reading more about keyword placement, and it seems to me like a good place to do keyword placement would be in the class and id names chosen for the elements they are representing. I'm not talking about any kind of black-hat keyword stuffing thing but real legitimate use of descriptive keywords for elements. Is this something that is actively done for SEO?
