• Socket(TCPIP) Unstable

  I have a setup of a SCPI server in a Win7 PC and have 2 other programs talking to it locally(127.0.0.1) over TCPIP socket 5025 and 5029. This worked well and stable in a fresh PC, but when we moved it into our production lines and the IT dept added their policies and stuff, it became unstable. The PC is connected to the production floor server but both of the programs are running locally in the PC. The connection tends to be disconnected when there is an idle period. And it takes 5-6times to refreshing the connection to get it back. I'm not a programmer myself, so I'm hoping to see if anyone here can help with some answers. Thank you very much!! • (Tough) Security Queston about ISP companies

  I want to ask a question. One ISP was criticized for it's low security conditions, and when i heard this i started to think: If one gets an unauthorized access to the mainframe computer / internal network of the ISP, then wouldn't he be able to sniff all the traffic ? Because the ISP is providing the internet connection for the user so all traffic that sends and transmits a user travels via the ISP, right ? What security solutions (talking about computer security) are being implemented by other ISP in order to protect themselves and their users ? If all the connections are being sent via a special computer, how secure it is and how can be we sure that it's really safe ? And what kind of computers are those who serve as backbones for the ISP ? • Problems with SCP stalling during file copy over VPN

  I have a series of files I need to copy via SCP over a VPN to a remote linux server each night. The files are not large, we're talking about tens of megabytes here, but the file copy almost always stalls after a few seconds. Running the SCP command with -vvv, I see the following over and over throughout the attempted copy process: debug2: channel 0: rcvd adjust 131072 debug2: channel 0: rcvd adjust 131072 debug2: channel 0: rcvd adjust 131072 Any thoughts? I see this question being asked in various places out there, but never any answers. Any help would be appreciated.

  I'm trying to research the best placement of wireless APs in a given space, and I'm running into problems in gathering information. I found (what I thought was) a great source in this tech republic article: http://techrepublic.com.com/5206-6230-0.html?forumID=82&threadID=163120 While this diagram seems detailed and overall very informative, there were a lot of comments talking about how it was lacking in things like "wire racks, microwaves, concrete walls, motors..." etc. Maybe I'm rash, but I just sort of looked around my office (which is, albeit, somewhat smaller than the one diagrammed), and went "uhhh, there", and hooked up the AP. It seems to cover everywhere. I imagine if my office quadrupled in size, I'd logically divide it up and put four APs in, with a similar amount of thought devoted to each. So, suppose I had a much more complex office. What tools (both diagramming and surveying) do you use to plan your AP placement?

• HTTP SSL VPN Client? (alternative to Cisco's AnyConnect VPN)

  Is there any free HTTP SSL VPN clients around, one that can act as an alternative to Cisco's own HTTP SSL VPN client (called AnyConnect)? The Cisco AnyConnect client has acknowledged problems, with no forthcoming solutions. Which is why I'm hoping for an alternative. Note: I'm only talking about the HTTP SSL VPN Client, not the HTTP SSL VPN Server. (If it were up to me they wouldn't be using Cisco at all, but it's not up to me.) Note: OpenVPN is a client that talks to their servers once you sign up for their service. It's not a generic VPN client. Note: ShrewSoft VPN is a client that uses IPsec and pre-shared keys, and was a good replacement for Cisco's old client - but not the new AnyConnect SSL VPN client. Note: Windows 7's VPN client fails to negotiate when presented with an SSL VPN connection. Note: I am looking for Windows clients only.

• HP ProCurve GVRP Setup

  I'm trying to setup GVRP on my 4 ProCurve switches. Currently I have a Layer 3 3500yl-24G (J8692A) which is connected to 3 Layer 2 2510G-48 (J9280A). I have three trunk ports setup on the 3500 connected to the 3 switches and currently everything seems to be working, the devices are talking to eachother and GVRP is pushing its configurations from the 3500 to the 3 other switches. My question is, once GVRP is setup, how exactly do I configure the ports on the 3 L2 switches to use the correct VLAN? I'm new to ProCurve network equipment and this is much easier to setup on Cisco equipment.

  My friend just updated her Windows Vista to service pack 1, or tried to. Now it wont boot up. Just black screen, some errors etc. I tried googling it and lots of people had this problem it seems. Anyone find a fix for it? I read somewhere I believe that Microsoft said to delete some files, Nvidia maybe? But I can not find that again, I forgot the exact error code I searched for before. • Using dnsmasq dns server on a laptop for a locally hosted tld

  Hi, I'm running a working apache install with mod vhost_alias on a laptop. Everything works, but I have to manually add hosts in my /etc/hosts file. I'd like to install dnsmasq to point a tld to my local machine (this is not the problem, I know how to add a wildcard tld to dnsmasq), but how do I make it so that it will go look for other dns servers upstream? Remember I'm talking about a laptop, so I will be working on various wifi hotspots, with different default gateways, dns servers, etc. I've searched for quite some time but the only things I find are guides that require you to hardcode the upstream servers wich is a no-go for me. Any help is appreciated!

• Making Google Talk messages appear on all logged in clients

  We're using Google Talk as our unofficial-official chat client around the office at work. One thing that poses a big problem almost every day is the fact that Google Talk only sends a message to the clients that you last used. Even though you may be logged into GTalk on 3 different machines, if you start talking on one machine, that becomes your "active" machine, and if you go to another machine, you will still only get messages on the last active machine. Is there a way that you can force Google Talk to send messages to ALL logged in clients, regardless of which client you are actively using? That way, you don't miss any messages during the time between when you get up from the active machine and then make the new client "active".

• PLESK Original php.ini files needed

  Hello, I am using PLESK 9.2.3 with CentOS 5. I recently tried to change some things in the php.ini files, but i ended up clearing both files. stupid mistake! Is there a possibility i can get the content of both files back. I am talking about the files: /etc/php.ini /usr/local/psa/admin/conf/php.ini or was it /etc/php.ini /usr/local/psa/admin/conf/.php.ini When i browse to my PLESK panel i get the error message: Warning: Unknown: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0 Fatal error: Unknown: Failed opening required 'auth.php3' (include_path='.:') in Unknown on line 0 Thats as much information i can get, i hope someone can make some sense of all this Regrads EDIT: I ended up just reinstalling plesk which was fairly easy. Something like yum install psa-plesk. There was a guide i followed, and everything worked out ok

• How to read a Text File Hidden Characters?

  Hi guys, I've created a text file from an application that I developed. When I send the text file to a SYSTEM Validation, they (3rd Party System) say that the file is invalid and that the file contains 3 characters in the beginning of the file that are not allowed as well special characters are not correct. They also say I need to use either ISO 8859-1 or PC850 Well, I'm using NotePad++ and I can't see that at all! What is the best text file reader for this kinda problems? • Computer shutsdowns when trying to boot

  I have an IBM ThinkCentre, and I was talking to someone on Skype when it suddenly just shutoff. When I rebooted it asked me to start windows normally or in safe mode, but as soon I choose an option (Any of them) it shuts back down. So I thought it was a problem with windows and tired booting from a Hirens disk, but same thing. I've been using this computer without problems for over a year know. Any idea's for me to try? Unfortunatly I don't have any powersupplies or extra RAM to switch out to try anything like that. EDIT I left it off for a while and it's booting to windows now. I would still like to know what might have been causing it to do that if you have any ideas.

• UDP flooding multiple servers

  What do you suggest? Being UDP flooded as I write to multiple servers in different data centers in 5 different countries . Up to 250,000 packets a second. I believe Cisco routers 5505 would not handle that - (some of our datacenter hosters can offer them. Some have no firewalls to offer.) Our clients naturally have constant disconnects to the server they are on. Hacker started this about three weeks ago. Sometimes for a few hours - up to a few days. If we can't stop it hitting the server with firewalls then how do we stop the hacker - now there is the challenge! Update : Found some of the data centers offer up to 10 firewall rules but would their routers be able to handle the possible volume I am talking about? Thanks Chris

• What is the difference betweeen "Network install" and "Network Boot" options in virt-manager when installing a new virtual machine

  From my understanding of PXE (Preboot Execution Environment), I know that there must be some negotiation first between the booting client and a DHCP server to obtain network parameters (IP address, etc) in order for the client to be able to fetch the boot loader and kernel image from the boot server. In other words, and aside from being a "virtual" machine, we're talking here about a "bare metal" machine, so there must be some "pre boot" mechanism for those negotiations to take place, and this is exactly what PXE is all about. When I think about the "Network install" option, I can't figure out how the new VM would be able to fetch the boot images (bootloader and kernel) without the previously mentioned mechanism. So, here is a short version of the question: When provisioning a new virtul machine, how do you expect the "Network install" option in virt-manager to work behind the scenes? Many thanks.

• How does one calculate voltages for overclocking?

  So, all I know is voltage and clock have something to do with each other. Unstable if too low voltage Too high voltage, and too much heat. or higher voltage + lower clock may heat less than that voltage at higher clock. The reason why im asking is because if I can learn how the power vs speed works, Then i might be able to project some kind of thermal curve to find out where my perfect overclock might be (without 50 burn-ins) But, as is apparent im sure.   I have been given a network (it is a LAN) comprised of switches and I need to discover the topology of that. (There may be Link Aggregation Groups (LAGs) in the network as well.) I have done a lot of search on layer 2 topology discovery and I have seen many articles talking about using SNMP MIBs or LLDP (I do not know which one is better or more practical, but all devices in my network support SNMP). But my problem is that I cannot find "the software to install and run" to actually see the topology map. I would really appreciate if someone could send me the website where I can download the code and use it. I have also found a lot of tools available online such as OpenNMS, Nagios, The Dude, LANsurveyor, SNMPwalk, and many more... But I cannot figure out which one is the best to pick. To summarize: what is the easiest simplest way to discover the layer 2 network topology?

Here is the use case: I have a server with a very large table (several gigabytes). One of the fields is currently VARCHAR(7). We need it a little longer and we are thinking of making it VARCHAR(255), but we are worried that it bloat the index.

  I have successfully configured and compiled php on my dev server, and works great, but after talking to a sysadmin buddy, he informed that custom compiles of the latest builds are not recommended for production (or even development) systems. He noted a situation where they custom configured and compiled PHP 5.3.6, only to find that there was some issue with a low-level Postgres driver, so they had to revert back to 5.3.3. So I am considering going back to yum to install PHP, however I have several custom configuration settings and was wondering if it's possible to pass or configure how PHP will be compiled through YUM? • Feed Reader's - Looking for some suggestions

  I am doing my best to make it a point to keep an eye on some blogs of people in my industry, and am looking for a good feed reader. I use chrome. I live in chrome, and if I am not in Chrome, I am using xterm. Yet, I do get my tweets in Pidgin and do all my talking discussion from that. Maybe it makes sense to integrate something in that? I see web feed readers as a bit too distant to make good use of it (eg, have to open a page, and less 'in your face'). Although, I am a big fan of google stuff and use google apps and google voice and google cals and google docs, etc.. So how is feedburner? I like to preserver time. It'd be interesting if I could read my feeds offline on my laptop or ChromeOS CR-48 with offline websites? Well, would love to hear what you guys are doing and suggest.

• What are the benefits of full VDI over Remote Desktop Services?

  We're talking about piloting VDI here, but the more research I do, the more it seems like it would make more sense just to upgrade and expand our TS (RDS) environment. I feel like you can pull off more sessions per core on RDS than on any VDI solution I've looked at. Is this the case? Is there a decision matrix anywhere describing the benefits of using full virtualized desktops over using a remote desktop farm? We need good video performance for clinical imaging - will this work better on one infrastructure or the other? (Does this question have a specific enough answer for it to be on SF? Regardless, I feel like having this here will be helpful for someone in the future...)

• Batch convert HTML file(s) saved using IE to MHT

  I have numerous web sites that I've saved over the years. I used Internet Explorer's "Save As..." option to do this. It saves the original page as an .html document, and page requirements in a linked folder with the same name as a document. I want to convert a bunch of these (over 1000) to the single-file .mht format. This can be done through Internet Explorer or Firefox (using UnMHT extension) by loading the original .html document, then re-saving as an .mht document. It is tedious to do that for the number of files I'm talking about, obviously. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a utility, command line or otherwise, that can accomplish this.
