• Cannot import video from a DV camcorder over FireWire

  I have a JVC GR-D320 miniDV camcorder that has a FireWire interface. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 RTM (64 bit, fresh installation). When I connect my camcorder through FireWire, I can see it in Device Manager without any warnings or problems, but I cannot capture videos from my miniDV tapes. After connecting, AutoPlay displays "Import Video could not find a compatible digital video device. Verify that the digital video device is properly connected and turned on." When using Windows Live Photo Gallery after selecting the import option, my camera is not listed. The camera used to work perfectly on the same hardware before upgrading to Windows 7 RTM 64 bit (it used to work fine on Windows XP SP3 32 bit). Googleing revealed that people had the exact same problems in Vista, but no solution was provided. Any help?

• Best way to keep configuration for server reinstallation?

  I have a server at home running Ubuntu 12.04 which has grown messy over the years. I have fiddled with various packages, desktop environments (for VNC) etc. and I would like to reinstall it to start again, and have better control over what goes into the box. But I want to keep much of the configurations after reinstallation, like LVM configuration, apache2, samba, etc etc. There would ideally exist a program which could analyze /etc, installed packages and such, store the information, and selectively put it back into the new installation. I am even considering installing Ubuntu server on a virtual machine, just to be able to compare the contents of /etc with a clean installation, and even perform a migration to the virtual machine first, to verify that the transfer process works. How do one go about performing this kind of reinstallation? Have anyone seen any resources on the net on the topic?

  I'm trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate over my existing Windows 7 Professional. I downloaded the ISO from Microsoft and burned the install disc at the slowest speed possible (x3). I booted to the DVD, but at the second screen I am already getting an error! That screen I am choosing between "Upgrade" and "Custom". I am trying to choose "Custom" but then I get the error: Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restart the installation. • SQL2008 Won't Work After SP1 Install?

  I have SQL2008 installed on my Win2008 server, and its been working fine - I have sites running using SQL databases etc.. I thought I would install SQL2008 SP1, but after install I cannot connect to SQL via Management Studio, and in configuration manager I cannot start SQL? • Why is my NTP controlled computer clock two minutes ahead?

  The clock in my computer is configured to be synchronized using NTP. To verify this I have tried two NTP clients using various NTP servers. My computer and the NTP clients are in complete agreement about the current time even across a wide range of NTP servers. I also have a GPS and my national phone company provides an accurate clock available by calling a specific phone number. Both my GPS and the phone company agrees on the current time. However, my computer is almost precisely two minutes (or 1 minute and 59 seconds) ahead of what I believe to be the "real" current time where I live. Why is my computer two minutes ahead? I realize that synchronizing clocks using the internet may not be entirely accurate as there is latency, but two minutes is a very long time on the internet. Is NTP really two minutes ahead? I'm running Windows 7 and live in the time zone UTC+1, but I don't think that is important in understanding my problem.

• smtp sasl authentication failure

  hello, I have configured and fixed almost all the problems with my postfix +courier + mysql setup for virtual mailboxes. I can now receive mail and send it from webmail (squirrel). BUT, what I can't do is authenticate from outside client. Since my isp blocks port 25 I setup postfix to work on 1025 for smtp and setup verbose loging. Here is the verbose log of a failed authentication process LOG Authentication for imap and pop3 seem to be working but this one is not. Here is the postconf -n output. Also through mysql I can verify that it is trying to validate through the system, running a query that returns the encrypted password stored in the database. I can't seem to find the error for this. thank you in advance

• Does the Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet's Pen have an Eraser?

  I'm thinking about getting one of the cheaper Wacom tablets to start doing some "hobby"-ish digital art. Right now I think the Bamboo tablets are the best choice, especially the Pen only one, but after reading reviews it seems like the pen with the Bamboo pen doesn't have an eraser. Can anyone verify this? If it doesn't include a digital eraser I would consider this an enormous downside. Does the Bamboo Pen & Touch have a pen with an eraser? If it does, I would think about it but honestly I don't want the "touch" part considering how terrible it seems to be compared to a normal trackpad. And finally, are there any new Bamboos or something related coming out in the future? I'd like a pen-only tablet (with an eraser) that's cheap and portable and nothing seems to satisfy yet. • OpenLDAP server logs filled with "TLS negotiation failure"

  I recently migrated an old OpenLDAP setup to a newer server, with a more robust certificate setup. Currently, most hosts are required to verify the cert matches the host: tls_checkpeer yes TLS_REQCERT always In the server logs, there are multiple occurences of: Nov 6 10:45:08 <servername> slapd[1773]: conn=2785646 fd=35 closed (TLS negotiation failure) These errors appear from multiple hosts, but there don't seem to be any issues actually logging into those servers with an LDAP account. Does anyone know what would cause these errors? The server is running Ubuntu 12.04.2, and OpenLDAP version 2.4.28. The cert was generated using GnuTLS.

SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatability SP2 or higher must be installed. I have installed SQLServer2005_BC_x64.msi from MS, and cant seem to find this SP2 version. SQL server is a 2008 R2 SP1. I have also tested with a 2008 SP3 SQL server same error. Named pippes output via ( OSQL /L) SQL-2008-1 SQL2

• Is It Possible to Change Default Windows Idle Time for Task Scheduler?

  From the official Microsoft docs: Detecting the Idle State The Task Scheduler service will verify that the computer is in an idle state every 15 minutes. The computer is considered idle if all the processors and all the disks were idle for more than 90% of the past 15 minutes and if there is no keyboard or mouse input during this period of time. Besides, any presentation type application that sets the ES_DISPLAY_REQUIRED flag will make Task Scheduler to not consider the system as being idle. In Windows 7, Task Scheduler considers a processor as idle even when low priority threads (thread priority < normal) execute. Is there any way to change the time to less than 15 minutes minutes? Am I assuming this hard-coded and impossible? My Google-fu has eluded me so far and I found nothing, but wanted to check here before giving up.

• Swapping 3Ware Raid Card - Best Procedure

  We have a server running an old firmware version and driver (just took this position) on the 3Ware 9650SE Raid Controller... We have been having issues with the server and seemed to have narrowed it down to the Raid Card... I will be replacing the Raid card with the same model of 3Ware 9650SE, however, the card ordered most likely will have newer firmware on it. I managed to backup all the data to a very large drive. My plan is to update the firmware/driver on the current setup (which is still booting) and verify that everything works.. Then throw in the new Raid Card, check the firmware version (not letting it post). And update to newest firmware if needed via Java management utility on the card? Is this the best route? Thanks!

  I have Windows 7 64bit as my OS + SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. I can connect to SQL Databases (2008), but cannot connect to a SQL 2005 database. I can, however, connect to the 2005 SQL Database on a PC that has Windows XP as the OS and also has SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. So it seems that it works fine on XP but not on Windows 7 (32 or 64bit). is this an Operating System issue?   Suppose you have a computer with two or more operating systems, and a certain piece of software whose license terms allows it to be installed on one computer, and it does a daily check with a remote server to verify that your serial is only used on the original install computer. You install this software on each of your OSes, but since its a different OS the remote server would have to determine that it is not on the same computer, and so would disable your license. So my question, when a license refers to a single computer, does a situation like this usually count as a single computer, or do the multiple OSes sort of make it multiple computers? How do you think a software vendor (specifically thinking AV companies that do this sort of serial check) would handle this situation?

So, I'd like to be able to look locally on my PC and verify the settings. Where can I find the settings for Flash locally? Surely the plugin cannot be heading to Macromedia itself for them (that is a future too bleak to contemplate). I am running Ubuntu 10.04. Thanks, Joe

  I would like to install a Test/Dummy SMTP server on a Windows 2008 server (virtual box). I just want to test my web application on the machine it self so I don't need the mails to go out on the internet, but just to be written to disk (so that I can verify that the mail function was indeed called and the correct data was handed over to SMTP) Can you recommend some tool. I guess starting your own SMTP server in python is an option. I am looking for a simple (ready to use) solution, targeted for tests systems. • Does dual-channel work only with an even number of RAM sticks?

  I have noticed that on the ASUS P5QL Pro motherboard the BIOS says "Dual Channel Asymmetric Mode" during POST. The motherboard has three 2GB Kingston ValueRAM 800 MHz DIMMs populated in the first 3 slots from the CPU socket. I have not run any benchmarks to verify that dual-channel is somehow being used, but I believed that dual-channel has to have an even number of sticks (and for triple channel, a multiple of 3). Another example is the Intel DX58SO motherboard; it has four DIMM slots, yet it's an LGA 1366 motherboard which does triple-channel. Apparently triple-channel still works with four DIMMs, instead of falling back to dual-channel. What does the BIOS' POST message mean in those case? Is dual-channel really used for the first two DIMMs, with the other one being an odd one in single-channel mode?

  I'm not much of a network and network security expert, but I need to add an existing Windows PC to a network with always on connection. The problem is, I have no idea if the PC is really clean, and, actually, no knowledge to check it. I scanned the PC with Process Explorer to verify if all running processes are signed, ran an AVG scan, but this is where my knowledge ends. IIRC, there can be bad code attached to svchost or something, bad drivers, and so on, but I have no idea how to check all those things. Reformatting the PC is unfeasible as of now. Are there any suggestions on what I could do?

  I have some checksums.md5 verification files from an ntfs external drive, but using windows notation: \ instead of /, spaces between file names (not escaped), reserved shell characters (like (, &, ', to name a few). • How do you check Driver Verifier logs on Windows 7 after catching a faulty driver?

  I kept getting BSODs on a clean install of Windows 7 (plus updates), so I decided to run Driver Verifier. I had to select all drivers, since it didn't catch the culprit when I didn't include Microsoft drivers. I know it is not a hardware problem since everything is working fine on Linux and memtest86+ is not reporting any errors in the RAM (8 GB). This time, it caught the faulty driver and gave me a BSOD telling me so. Using WhoCrashed, I could verify what was the last error message with the parameters and the source. Yet, the source is always the kernel (ntoskrnl.exe) and the bugcheck this time was 0xC4 (0x85, 0xFFFFF9804429AFC0, 0x2, 0x11B948). After searching on the web, I found out "the driver called MmMapLockedPages without having locked down the MDL pages." As I am not developing any driver, this is of no use to me. However, I would like to know which driver caused Driver Verifier to trigger an alert, so I can either disable it, or rollback to a previous version in order not to get crashes anymore.

If not, can anyone independent of OpenCandy and their affiliates verify that /NOCANDY works? Background: About to install WinSCP onto a fresh Windows installation, and found out that new versions have OpenCandy associated with their installer. For the sake of balance, here's a link to WinSCP's FAQ on OpenCandy. The claim about /NOCANDY working appears on WinSCP's web site, but the same boilerplate appears on other OpenCandy web sites. If the OpenCandy people are offended by the tag "spyare": sorry, but it's the main tag here, rather than "adware".

• Visual Studio 2005 SP1 refuses to install in Windows 7

  I'm trying to install Visual Studio 2005 in Windows 7. When attempting to start, Windows 7 complains that VS2005 is incompatible with Windows 7 and offers me to search online for a solution. It comes up with a link to VS2005 SP1 for Vista and Windows 7, but when I download it (VS80sp1-KB932232-X86-ENU.exe) and try to run it, it refuses to install saying that The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch.
