• Round-twice error in .NET's Double.ToString method

  Mathematically, consider for this question the rational number 8725724278030350 / 2**48 where ** in the denominator denotes exponentiation, i.e. the denominator is 2 to the 48th power. (The fraction is not in lowest terms, reducible by 2.) This number is exactly representable as a System.Double. Its decimal expansion is 31.0000000000000'49'73799150320701301097869873046875 (exact) where the apostrophes do not represent missing digits but merely mark the boudaries where rounding to 15 resp. 17 digits is to be performed. Note the following: If this number is rounded to 15 digits, the result will be 31 (followed by thirteen 0s) because the next digits (49...) begin with a 4 (meaning round down). But if the number is first rounded to 17 digits and then rounded to 15 digits, the result could be 31.0000000000001. This is because the first rounding rounds up by increasing the 49... digits to 50 (terminates) (next digits were 73...), and the second rounding might then round up again (when the midpoint-rounding rule says "round away from zero"). (There are many more numbers with the above characteristics, of course.) Now, it turns out that .NET's standard string representation of this number is "31.0000000000001". The question: Isn't this a bug? By standard string representation we mean the String produced by the parameterles Double.ToString() instance method which is of course identical to what is produced by ToString("G"). An interesting thing to note is that if you cast the above number to System.Decimal then you get a decimal that is 31 exactly! See this Stack Overflow question for a discussion of the surprising fact that casting a Double to Decimal involves first rounding to 15 digits. This means that casting to Decimal makes a correct round to 15 digits, whereas calling ToSting() makes an incorrect one. To sum up, we have a floating-point number that, when output to the user, is 31.0000000000001, but when converted to Decimal (where 29 digits are available), becomes 31 exactly. This is unfortunate. If you don't want to use his stuff (can be found through the URL), just delete the code lines above dependent on exactString. You can still see how the Double in question (evil) is rounded and cast.

  Hi, I am trying to access a external ftp server through my company's FTP proxy from a bash prompt and I am getting the below issue after I enter the user name 421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection Login failed. No control connection for command: Permission denied The proxy works fine for all other sites but I am unable to access a site which has been recently setup using this proxy. Can it be an issue at the site's end like allowing our proxy ip address thru their firewall to access their server? Thanks

  Hi I have a MS SQL database running (MS SQL 2005) and am connecting to it via the net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.Driver. The query works fine for all the columns except one that is a varchar(max). Any ideas how to get around this issues? I am using the jdbc driver to run a data index into a SOLR implementation.   Hello guys, I hope I can explain this right I have two input fields that require a price to be entered into them in order for donation to go through and submit. The problem that I am having is that I would like the validation process check to see if one of the two fields has a value if so then proceed to submit. If both fields are empty then alert.   I am having a problem in php switch case. When i set $number=0 it should run very first case but here this code returns 10-20K that is in second case. I checked comparison operators, tested them in if else case they return correct values but here first case do not run on $number=0 Why is this happening ? php consider 0 as false or something wrong in code ?   Hi, I'm trying to implement a JQuery script to process some areas inside an image map. I'm using $('area[shape="poly"]') as a selector to obtain the areas I'm interested in. It is working fine in IE8 and Firefox, but it is not selecting the elements in IE6 or IE7. This is a test page that shows this problem. I stumbled upon the memoir class yesterday, and was thinking of giving it a try, so here I am trying to compile with this class instead of KOMA-Script.   In the article Using Java DB in Desktop Applications the Address Book demo have a method disconnect which have a try-catch block that catch and ignores the exception. If you add a printStackTrace you can see that the exception always occur. What's wrong here? The JavaDB should not throw this exception, or they should fix something in the example program?

  I wanted to write an iptables script in Python. Rather than calling iptables itself I wanted to use the python-iptables package. However I'm having a hard time getting some basic rules setup. I wanted to use the filter chain to accept incoming TCP traffic on port 1234. • gcc/g++: error when compiling large file

  Hi, I have a auto-generated C++ source file, around 40 MB in size. It largely consists of push_back commands for some vectors and string constants that shall be pushed. When I try to compile this file, g++ exits and says that it couldn't reserve enough virtual memory (around 3 GB). Googling this problem, I found that using the command line switches --param ggc-min-expand=0 --param ggc-min-heapsize=4096 may solve the problem. They, however, only seem to work when optimization is turned on. 1) Is this really the solution that I am looking for? 2) Or is there a faster, better (compiling takes ages with these options acitvated) way to do this? Best wishes, Alexander Update: Thanks for all the good ideas. I tried most of them. Using an array instead of several push_back() operations reduced memory usage, but as the file that I was trying to compile was so big, it still crashed, only later. In a way, this behaviour is really interesting, as there is not much to optimize in such a setting -- what does the GCC do behind the scenes that costs so much memory? (I compiled with deactivating all optimizations as well and got the same results) The solution that I switched to now is reading in the original data from a binary object file that I created from the original file using objcopy. This is what I originally did not want to do, because creating the data structures in a higher-level language (in this case Perl) was more convenient than having to do this in C++. However, getting this running under Win32 was more complicated than expected. objcopy seems to generate files in the ELF format, and it seems that some of the problems I had disappeared when I manually set the output format to pe-i386. The symbols in the object file are by standard named after the file name, e.g. converting the file inbuilt_training_data.bin would result in these two symbols: binary_inbuilt_training_data_bin_start and binary_inbuilt_training_data_bin_end. I found some tutorials on the web which claim that these symbols should be declared as extern char _binary_inbuilt_training_data_bin_start;, but this does not seem to be right -- only extern char binary_inbuilt_training_data_bin_start; worked for me.
