• Workaround for Outlook 2007 for wrapping text around image with margin?

  As we all know, Outlook 2007 uses the Word 2007 rendering engine, causing endless grief when designing HTML email message. [Insert rant here] In particular, float, margin, and padding are - shall we say? - poorly supported. To simulate float so that text wraps around an image, apparently we can simply use: <img src="foo.png" align="right"> The issue is padding/margin. Without padding/margin, the wrapped text butts up against the image which looks goofy. One workaround is to edit the image and add transparent framing that simulates margin. Does anyone know any other workarounds?

• How can I make sure the Sphinx daemon runs?

  I'm working on setting up a production server using CentOS 5.3, Apache, and Phusion Passenger (mod_rails). I have an app that uses the Sphinx search engine and the Thinking Sphinx gem. According to the Thinking Sphinx docs... If you actually want to search against the indexed data, then you’ll need Sphinx’s searchd daemon to be running. This can be controlled using the following tasks: rake thinking_sphinx:start rake ts:start rake thinking_sphinx:stop rake ts:stop What would be the best way to ensure that this takes place in production? I can deploy my app, then manually run rake thinking_sphinx:start, but I like to set things up so that if I have to bounce the server, everything will come back up. Should I put a call to that Rake task in an initializer? Or something in rc.local?

• Android: 2D. OpenGl or android.graphics.drawable?

  I'm working with my friend on our first Android game. Basic idea is that every frame the whole surface is redrawn (1 large bitmap) which then sprinkled all over with large number of particles which produces effect of soapy bubbles where there's a pool of about 20 bitmaps which randomly gets picked to produce illusion that all bubbles (between 200 - 300) are all different. The math engine is in C (JNI) and currently all drawing is done using android.graphics package very similar (since that was the example I was using) to Lunar Lander. It works but animation is somewhat jerky and I can feel by temperature of my phone that it is very busy. Will we benefit from switching to OpenGL? And as a bonus question: what would be a good way to optimize the drawing mechanism (Lunar Lander like) we have now?

  Hello Everybody, I own a small, very young, EU based (Italy) company, and among other things, we sell IT solutions. I have a degree in applied mathematics, and I mainly deal with user interfaces, embedded systems, automation and web applications. You can say that I'm an enlightened entrepreneur because I work only with open source software (OS, IDE, I release under BSD , ... everything is free as in freedom), I give high importance to post sales services and customer satisfaction, plus I think I'm the best boss someone could desire (LOL), as I have google in mind when I think about IT workers rights. But the most beautiful thing is that, although everybody advised us not to use open source, is that we are quite profitable!!! (for the sixth trimester in a row). Now I offshore most of the work to an Indian company. I divide the work in modules and I outsource the longer or more trivial ones. I spend a lot of time defining the specifications and I leave the hard work to them. Using productivity bonuses, a lot of prototypes and third-party audits I think that my software has reached a very good quality level. I would like to start my own software development company, in order to improve control over process and cut costs. Obviously I can't afford the cost of labor in the EU, so I thought about opening a company in Asia. What I need Is: 1) Cheap labor - I can afford to give productivity bonuses and higher than average wages and stay profitable just because labor is cheap. 2) Many talents - I need a good level of tertiary education, and a good number of graduates, so I can hire junior developers and train and teach them according to my needs and philosophies (e.g.: open source mind) 3) Good infrastructure - buildings, transport, internet, .... everything that a company might need. I thought about 3 possible candidates: 1) India - I already work with indian people, I know that they are realiable and speak a good english. Big cities are too expensive, but maybe a small city like lucknow http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucknow could suits my needs. 2) China - They say it's cheaper than India, but I everytime I worked with a chineese company the language was a big barrier. They work hard, are somewhat skilled and cheap but maybe it's a risky path. Plus I feel a little uncofortable with their lack of human rights. 3) Philippines - Same as china: cheaper than india, but maybe less educated. Where do you think it's the best place to start a software company? Any reading or book to advise? thank you very much

Which one is "the best" (the most used, complete, documentated) At the moment I'm developing on Notepad++ (mostly because I find it useful and complete) is there a better development tool? • What is the fastest way to learn JPA ?

  I'm looking for the best resources (books, frameworks, tutorials) that will help me get up to speed with JPA. I've been happily using iBatis/JDBC for my persistence needs, so I need resources that will hopefully provide comparable functions on how to do things. e.g. how to I set the isolation level for each transaction ? I know there might be 10 books on the topic, so hopefully, your recommendation could narrow down to the best 2 books. Should I start with OpenJPA or are there other opensource JPA frameworks to use ? P.S. Do suggest if I should learn JPA2 or JPA1 ? My goal ultimately is to be able to write a Google App Engine app (which uses JPA1). Thanks Jacque

What I mean is, is it inefficient for the browser, search engine optimisation, or any other important factors, if programmatically my float:righted sidebar appears in the markup before the main content div, which is set to float:left? To the user, the main content appears on the left, and the sidebar on the right. • Mobile web on nokia devices not displaying centain elements

  So i have a site which is rendered with our in-house portal engine. It resizes images and adjusts style-sheets automatically in real-time. Issue is that some html elements are inexplicably disappearing due to what only can be described as HTML compatibility. But the problem is not consistent. And only seems to be an issue on some nokia devices. I have tried to install the Nokia Mobile Browser Emulator... but its the worst piece of software i have seen in my life... after 4 hours of installing and uninstalling different versions of JRE, i still can't get it to install. • trouble accessing localhost from ie7 running on parallels (win xp) on mac os x

  I'm running the app engine devserver on localhost:8080, and want to access it from ie7 running on parallels. I've tried all of the tips here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/61449/how-do-i-access-the-host-from-vmware-fusion And they seem like they should work, particularly accessing via the gateway ip address. I've also sudo ipfw add allow tcp from 8080 to 8089 for good measure. Still no dice. I can access the external internet from ie7. The connection settings on parallels are set to 'Shared networking'. I'm out of ideas.

  on larger projects i use a simple bug tracking system thats designed to be used by clients i have a lot of trouble convincing clients to use it (they send bug reports via email) does anyone have any strategies they can suggested? also, i have been playing around with a theory as to why this is the case; it goes like this: asking a client to log a bug is like taking your car to a mechanic for a service, and the mechanic hands you the engine oil and says "here, pop that in". basically, the client has paid you to do the work, logging a bug sounds too much like work, so they want you to do it thoughts? -- LM

Or in particular, I can't get these things: I really can't get the mechanism of action of LDAP and its role. Should I think of Active Directory LDS as of its superset? What're the other roles of AD and why this term is nearly a synonym of term "domain"? What's the role of LDAP in the remote login sequence? Does it store roaming user profiles? Does it store anything else? How it is called (are there any upper-level or lower-level services that use it in the course of NetLogon)? How do I join a domain. On the client machine I just use the Domain Controller admin credentials, but how do I prepare the Domain Controller for a new machine to join it. What's that deal of Machine trust accounts? How it is used? Suppose, I've just configured a machine to join a domain, created its machine trust, added its data to the domain controller. How would that machine find WINS server to query it for Domain Controller NetBIOS name? Does any computer name, ending with <1C type, correspond to domain controller? In what cases Kerberos and LM/NTLM are used for authentication? Where are password hashes stored in, say, Windows2000 domain controller? Right in the registry? What is SAM - is it a service, responsible for authentication and sending/storing those passwords and accompanying information, such as groups policies etc.? Who calls it? Does it use Active Directory? What's the role of NetBIOS except by name service? • OpenVPN multiple servers on the same subnet, high availability

  Hey everyone. Let me start by saying that my Linux experience isn't super awesome but I can usually find my way around things easily. Over at work we have an OpenVPN setup that's been due for some improvement for a while now. The main server (tap mode) runs in our office, behind a rather slow DSL connection. The main problem is that, since I'm usually out of the office, every time I want to access something on the virtual network I have to go through that server to get anywhere else. We have two servers up on 100 Mbit connections that we use for development and production purposes, about 3 more servers in the office (one of them behind a different T1 line for VOIP) and about two dozen clients who use the network on a daily basis from various locations. We've had situations where network routing (outside of our control) would not allow people to reach our main OpenVPN server whilst the other locations were connectable. Also any time someone outside the office wants to fetch something from any of the servers (say, a 500 MB code repository), a whopping 20 KB/s download speed is just unacceptable these days (did I mention slow DSL? ok). We had to implement traffic shaping on this server since maxing out this connection was fairly trivial. I had the thought of running two (or more) OpenVPN servers in the network. These would have to have the same subnet though, as our application relies on virtual network's IP addresses for some of its core functionality. The clients would also preferably retain the same IP addresses but that's not vital. For simplicity, lets call the current server office and the second server I'm setting up, cloud. Call the server on the T1 phone. This proved to be rather complex because as soon as I connect to cloud, I cannot see office. Any routes to a server that would go through office also do not work while I'm connected to cloud (no ping, nothing) and vice-versa. There's no rules for iptables that would be blocking the traffic either. Recently I came across this article on linuxjournal but the solution they provide seems to only cover the use of two servers and somewhat outdated (can't even find much documentation, their wiki is offline). They also state that adding more servers would be a complex task. Ideally I would like to keep the existing server office running the virtual network and also run the OpenVPN daemon on the cloud and phone servers (100 Mbit and very reliable connection, respectively) so that we're on safe ground in case of a hardware failure, DSL failure, etc. So, in essence, I'm looking for a highly available OpenVPN solution (fix, patch, hack, tweak, whatever you want to call it) that will accept connections on multiple hosts (2 or more) whilst keeping the same IP address subnet regardless of the server to which you connect to. • Display arabic text left to right in pdf using apache fop 0.95

  Hi all. We are generating pdf using apache's xsl fo engine, namely fop 0.95. We have been successful in displaying arabic text from xml to pdf. But there is some problem in the direction of the displayed words. If we have 'sangam' (please assume that 'sangam' is in arabic) in xml, it gets displayed as 'magnas'. Has anyone encountered this before? What could be the solution? For example, I have one node in xml file like this: <empltmoblab>??????</empltmoblab> Now when displayed in pdf, this is displayed like this: ?????? This means I am getting just the reverse. I want it as it is in xml node. Thank you.

• Is GAE Really GZipping My Content? Slow Response Times with GAE as CDN

  I am testing out Google App Engine as a free Content Delivery Network and it feels like it's taking a long time to serve up my content. Why does this gae page take a say a half a second to download, while your typical stack overflow page downloads much faster even with a ton more content? What am I missing here? All I have done is create an app and uploaded an image according to that tutorial, but content is being served very slowly it seems. Any suggestions? (Not considering Amazon or other CDNs right now, just looking for help with GAE). Note: I am using Safari when I visit those links, maybe safari is causing problems?

  I have successfully installed the proprietary drivers for my nvidia (geforce 7300 gt) graphics card on debian/lenny. Now the problem is that the monitors gets black, the power light starts blinking after i launch the x-server. • Python Scraper for Javascript?

  Hey all, Can anyone direct me to a good Python screen scraping library for javascript code (hopefully one with good documentation/tutorials)? I'd like to see what options are out there, but most of all the easiest to learn with fastest results... wondering if anyone had experience. I've heard some stuff about spidermonkey, but maybe there are better ones out there? • How do you search for symbols without knowing what they're called?

  This is a question that's been bothering me for a while, and it's likely that there's no way around it. But I was curious if anyone has any techniques for dealing with this. How do you search on a symbol using a search engine (such as Google or Bing) without knowing the symbol's name...? Most standard search engines seem to ignore symbols... (e.g. @, ^, etc.) Are there any engines that don't? Is there any other way to do this?

• Python module seeing a full list as empty in another module

  I'm working on a pygame project and have the main engine layed out. The problem is I hit a bug that I just can not seem to figure out. What happens is one module can't read a variable from another module. It's not that the variable can't be read, it just sees an empty list instead of what it really is. Instead of posting the entire source code I reproduced the bug in two small snippets that hopefully a skillful python-ist can interpret in his\her head.   Hi Small design question here. I'm trying to develop a calculation app in C#. I have a class, let's call it InputRecord, which holds 100s of fields (multi dimensional arrays) This InputRecordclass will be used in a number of CalculationEngines. Each CalculcationEngine can make changes to a number of fields in the InputRecord. These changes are steps needed for it's calculation. Now I don't want the local changes made to the InputRecord to be used in other CalculcationEngine's classes. The first solution that comes to mind is using a struct: these are value types. However I'd like to use inheritance: each CalculationEngine needs a few fields only relevant to that engine: it's has it's own InputRecord, based on BaseInputRecord. Can anyone point me to a design that will help me accomplish this?

• Hibernate doesn't generate cascade

  Hi. I have a set hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto to create so that Hibernate creates the tables in mysql for me. However, it doesn't seem that hibernate correctly adds Cascade on the references in the table. It does however work when I for instance delete a row, and I have a delete cascade as hibernate annotation. So I guess that means that Hibernate reads the annoation on runtime, and perform cascading manually? Is that normal behavior? For instance: @Entity class Report { @OneToOne(cascade = CascadeType.ALL) public File getPdf() { return pdf; } } Here I have set cascade to ALL. In my opinion, it should have added the ON DELETE CASCADE ON DELETE UPDATE

• How to catch specific exception without error number?

  I need to catch the following specific exception: System.Data.OleDb.OleDbException was caught ErrorCode=-2147467259 Message="The changes you requested to the table were not successful because they would create duplicate values in the index, primary key, or relationship. Change the data in the field or fields that contain duplicate data, remove the index, or redefine the index to permit duplicate entries and try again." Source="Microsoft JET Database Engine" I'm not sure what ErrorCode is but it looks unreliable. Can I rely on Message being identical across platforms? Is the only solution to do a text search of Message for words like duplicate and primary key? Note: see my question here for why I need to catch this exception.
