• How to Figure AdSense PPC with AdWords CPC of $0.05

  Often when I am using the Adwords Keyword tool I find keywords with a CPC of $0.05... I mean VERY often. Is this like base level when it comes to PPC or is this a possible error? For example, with a few keywords I have targetted with a 0.05 CPC, I often find a PPC of 0.25 or more. Obviously, this is because my content is triggering other keywords, although it is centered around a 0.05 keyword. I have found several keywords that have over 200,000 searches using the [exact] search parameter but have a CPC of $0.05. I plan on writing content to cover these keywords, but I am trying to figure the approximate value of these keywords. 0.05 leads me to believe there are no advertisers so IF someone were to advertise and use this keyword, it would cost them ~0.05. But since there is obviously no demand for these keywords and thus they aren't getting bids, other ads MUST be shown. How can I predict the value of ads with a CPC of $0.05? Strange question I know, but I'm just trying to understand this a bit more.

  I'm Marco from Italy and I'd like to ask you a piece of advice about my career. I hold a Ms degree in Biology, I enjoyed a lot studying it and I got very good grades but I didn't know what to do with my degree in the real life. Few months ago, I began to read a book about Python programming (Introduction to Computer Science, Zelle J.) and I've great fun learning Python as a beginner, I wake up in the morning thinking about doing excersies and writing simple programs with python :) I'm also watching free lectures from MIT open courseware, and I'm feeling a certain degree of regrets for never asking myself what was computer science, since it seems to me it's a magic world. After weeks of doubts, I made a move :) I applied for a CS bachelor degree abroad, I got an interview and I'm going to start this great adventure next September. I feel incredibly excited at it, but a little bit scared too. Scared because sometimes I think I'm making a great mistake for my life restarting from a bachelor in a completely different area of study. Sometimes I hear people saying the IT market is bad, sometimes I hear other ones saying quite the opposite instead. Moreover, some colleagues of mine suggested me to try to get into Bioinformatics, instead of CS. My question is: I want to really discover if CS is for me, I mean the passion of my life. I know I'm just a beginner and I can't say nothing about it yet. What do you suggest me: CS or Bioinformatics? If I get a Bs in CS, could I get into bioinformatics without relevant experience, taking into account I have a Ms Biology degree? Any comment is appreciated, thanks in advance.

  Tengo un servidor con 8GB de RAM de 32 bits, instale windows server 2003 enterprise y sql server 2005 enterprise, el Sistema Operativo reconoce los 8GB, pero el Sql Server solo usaba 1.6 GB de memoria, entonces agregue al boot.ini el parametro /PAE y en Sql Server le habilite AWE de 1GB a 5GB, despues de reiniciar el servidor el Sistema que usa la BD estaba mas rapido mejoro bastante, pero en memoria el Sql Server solo usa 100 MB, veo la cantidad de memoria usada en el Administrador de Tareas de Windows, y no se si esta funcionando AWE o que sucedio? • how to offer subdomain hosting with bandwidth calculation per user

  Hi, Im a php developer and I would like to offer subdomain hosting,but need also to be able to calculate bandwidth for each subdomain. For the subdomains creation I will use catch-all and wildcards etc to easily set these up. The one thing im a bit stumped on is how to calculate bandwidth for each subdomain, is this possible within php? or are there better solutions for this perhaps using folders or something? Also a script will be loaded under the subdomain, this will vary per user. Is it worth giving each user a new folder and their own script, or more easy to manage one script for all users? • W3SVC service stopping error

  Hi, I have a web server ( IIS 7.5 , windows 2008 64 Bit web server ed) and notice that in last few days all web sites on server stopped and cant browser by visitor. I check the event log but I didnt see any things related to this problem. When I try to restart IIS i got error on W3SVC serivce.When IIS try to STOP it, W3SVC goes to stopping state and never stop. so I can't start it again. I try and find that I never can restart the W3SVC and when IIS work fine if I try to restart this service, it goes to stopping and never stop. 1- how can I find the problem on IIS? ( i have several asp.net app host on it ) 2- how can I fix W3SVC service stopping problem? Thanks Mehdi

• Simplest way to expose UNIX mailboxes via IMAP or POP3 on RHEL 5.6

  We've got a web server running RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.6, and it has all the usual local UNIX mailboxes. As is typical, the root mailbox gets all the cron output, logwatch results, etc. I'd like an easier way to keep an eye on this mailbox besides running mail via ssh. What should I install/enable to allow access to these system mailboxes via IMAP or POP3 with minimal fuss? Either protocol would be fine for what I'm doing, as I could then add it as an account in Outlook. A bit of searching led me to cyrus-imapd and dovecot, but it seems like they are meant for more serious mail hosting operations. Either they use their own mailbox system exclusively, or don't have a simple way of making the UNIX mailboxes available. If I'm wrong about that, then I'm fine with using either of them as long as I can get to the mailboxes of the existing accounts on the box.

• Copssh, how to add users?

  I installed copssh on Windows Vista (64-bit) here, and the installation seemed to go fine. It requires you to explicitly add users to log in, which is fine, so I opened the COPSSH Control Panel (really just an app), went to the Users tab, clicked Add, Forward, and the "User:" popup is empty. The "Domain:" popup has exactly one entry: my computer name. The "Documentation" shortcut in the start menu group is broken, but I found the folder it's supposed to point to, and I only see docs for command-line tools (which I'll investigate next). Is there something I'm missing? Is the COPSSH Control Panel just plain broken?

• How to disable internet access at night on the router?

  I have an internet connection that I'd like to be enabled only during the day. With multiple household internet devices, this would need to be something disabled at the level of the router. I don't believe the router offers this sort of functionality, but I'm reasonably familiar with setting up web servers and the like, and I'm wondering if I can set up some sort of proxy server on the internet that the router must go through and have that proxy only active at certain times of day. It's a bit vague I know, but is something like this even possible? If not, are there other solutions to the problem?

• Reliable procedure/tool for removing print drivers in Windows 7 (domain environment)

  One of the troubleshooting steps in resolving printer-related issues with any version of Windows is to remove installed print drivers and then reinstall the drivers. This is a domain environment and drivers are pulled from a print server. I've had occasion to need to do this on a user's system running Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit. These procedures don't work: Removing the printer from Devices and Printers (doesn't remove driver obviously) Doing the above, going into Server Properties, and attempting to remove the driver (fails with a "driver in use" error) Opening an empty mmc, adding the Print Management snap-in, and attempting to do the above. Doing sc stop spooler and sc start spooler before doing both of the above Now I know it's possible to remove drivers with the spooler service stopped and then going into the spool directory, as well as deleting registry entries. I'm asking if a tool exists to do this where I can just select the driver in question and it be removed.

• Animation API vs frame animation

  I'm pretty far down the road in my game right now, closing in on the end. And I'm adding little tweaks here and there. I used custom frame animation of a single image with many versions of my sprite on it, and controlled which part of the image to show using rectangles. But I'm starting to think that maybe I should've used the Animation API that comes with android instead. Will this effect my performance in a negative way? Can I still use rectangles to draw my bitmap? Could I add effects from the Animation API to my current frame-controlled animation? like the fadeout-effect etc? this would mean I wont have to change my current code. I want some of my animations to fade out, and just noticed that using the Animation API makes things alot easier. But needless to say, I would prefer not having to change all my animation-code. • How to do Cross Platform in own Engine? [on hold]

  At the Moment I finished the first game with my game engine(if I wanna call it like that) which is based in LWJGL. Now i'm worring if I could do crossplattforming in my engine. I build me a tool tool with a batch file to compile my project dir into an .exe . At first i'm looking to do it on Android with an comparable batch file. An link for an tutorial would be awesome! At next place there would be an renderer and audiosystem. If read that theres an OpenGL ES renderer, and I allready played a bit around with the Android SDK. But I use the Texture and Audio class in slick-util. So I thought about creating OOP classes that carry around the data and load it in an platform specific Buffer. • How do MaxSpareServers work in Apache?

  I've scoured the web but I can't find out what MaxSpareServers are in Apache MPM prefork.. The MaxSpareServers directive sets the desired maximum number of idle child server processes. An idle process is one which is not handling a request. If there are more than MaxSpareServers idle, then the parent process will kill off the excess processes. Great, but what causes a spareserver to be created? More importantly, when does a spare server go away? I understand that minspareservers are created gradually after the server is started.. How do maxspareservers relate to maxclients? Basically I'm at a bit of a loss on how best to configure Apache.. there's a lot of documentation out there but it isn't that clear. Thanks, John.

Any help on this issue would be great as I am trying to run Apache ANT using Java 1.6.

• Rendering a big game universe - bitmaps or vector graphics?

  I am new to an Android development, though I have much experience with Java, C++, PHP programming and a bit experience with vector graphics too (basic 3d Studio Max, Flash, etc). I am starting to work on an Android game. It is going to be a 2D space shooter/RPG, and I am not going to use any game engines and any 3D party libs. I really want to create a very large game universe, or even pseudo-infinite (without visible borders, as if it were a 2D projection of a sphere). It should include 10-12 clusters of 7-8 planets/other space objects and random amount of single asteroids/comets, which player can interact with and also not interactive background. I am looking for a least complicated aproach to create such a universe. My current ideas are: Simply create bitmaps with space scenery background so that they can be tiled seamlessly repeated and construct my 2D universe of this tiles, then place interactive objects (planets, other spaceships) on it. Using vector graphics. I would have a solid color background, some random background objects and gradients here and there. My problems here: Lack of knowledge of how well vector graphics is integrated in Android. Performance? Memory usage? Does Android manage big bitmaps well? Do all of the bitmaps have to be in memory during all game process? I am interested in technical details regarding each of the ideas and a suggestion, which I should go with.

  Context: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit edition Microsoft Office 2007 Outlook Steps to Reproduce: Make an event that recurs once a week. Wait a week. See that it pops up OK. Wait a month. Notice that it doesn't say that it is a month overdue. Expected Result: The usual note that the reminder is [x] weeks overdue. Actual Result: Something like "6 days overdue". Possible Excaberating Issue: I have many overdue reminders. For the ones that aren't time critical (and all other things being equal), I work by category and age. For example, I do health-related reminders when I'm doing health stuff; if I have 2 health-related reminders, I do the older one first. Big Question: How is Outlook supposed to handle this sort of overdue recurring reminder? Is there any way to get Outlook to act the way I expect it to?

• Linux kernel with grsec + Java / Apache Tomcat

  I've got a Debian Linux 64 bit dedicated server. The kernel has the grsec patch applied. I'm mainly using this server to run Apache Tomcat (6.0.26, Java 6) and everything seems fine. The only issue, is that when I start Tomcat, I get a few of these: grsec: From xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: Segmentation fault occurred at 00007fefe04e4000 in /home/t/jre1.6.0_20/bin/java[java:22403] uid/euid:1001/1001 gid/egid:1001/1001, parent /sbin/init[init:1] uid/euid:0/0 gid/egid:0/0 grsec: more alerts, logging disabled for 10 seconds Then no error logs anymore. Everything is fine. The kernel is: Linux 2.6.32.2-xxxx-grs-ipv4-64 #1 SMP Tue Dec 29 14:41:12 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux And the webapp works fine. So there are segmentation fault when Tomcat starts, but everything seems to works fine. Is this concerning? Should I move to a non-grsec kernel?

• Battery is drained too quickly

  I'm getting really low battery life under ubuntu, not even close to windows. I tried powertop, and I saw that my laptop is consuming in idle nearly 20 watts (a bit more). I tried to install laptop-mode-tools, change "good" into "bad" in powertop, but nothing changes. I see that I have the the HD audio output device which is running at 100% every time. Could this be the problem? This is a report from powertop. • Get Started with JavaFX 2 and Scene Builder

  Up on otn/java is a very useful article by Oracle Java/Middleware/Core Tech Engineer Mark Heckler, titled, “How to Get Started (FAST!) with JavaFX 2 and Scene Builder.”  Heckler, who has development experience in numerous environments, shows developers how to develop a JavaFX application using Scene Builder “in less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee, while learning your way around in the process”. He begins with a warning and a reassurance: “JavaFX is a new paradigm and can seem a bit imposing when you first take a look at it. But remember, JavaFX is easy and fun. Let's give it a try.” Next, after showing readers how to download and install JDK/JavaFX and Scene Builder, he informs the reader that they will “create a simple JavaFX application, create and modify a window using Scene Builder, and successfully test it in under 15 minutes.” Then readers download some NetBeans files:“EasyJavaFX.java contains the main application class. We won't do anything with this class for our example, as its primary purpose in life is to load the window definition code contained in the FXML file and then show the main stage/scene. You'll keep the JavaFX terms straight with ease if you relate them to the theater: a platform holds a stage, which contains scenes. SampleController.java is our controller class that provides the ‘brains’ behind the graphical interface. If you open the SampleController, you'll see that it includes a property and a method tagged with @FXML. This tag enables the integration of the visual controls and elements you define using Scene Builder, which are stored in an FXML (FX Markup Language) file. • What's the best way to format an external HDD for both OSX and Windows ?

  I have an external HDD (1TB) and I'd like to use it on OSX and Windows. I had another external HDD using NTFS and I used NTFS-3G on osx to write files, but I found the reading/writing very slow. Googling a bit I see many people recommend HFS+ in conjuction with HFS Explorer for Windows. Is this the best way ? Is it possible to have two partitions, one HFS+ and one NTFS ? Is it a good option or is it better to use one partition ? I've seen this thread on using UDF for USB flash drive. Would that be suited for an USB external HDD ?

• Event notifications for Reporting Systems

  The last couple of months I have been working on an application that allows people to browse a data mart. Nice, but nothing new. In this context I have an idea that I want to publish before anyone else patents it: event notifications. You see, reporting systems are not used as much as we’d like. Typically, users don’t know where to look for reports that might interest them. At best, there are some standard reports that people generate every so often, i.e. based on a time trigger. Or some reporting systems can be configured to send monthly reports around, for convenience. But apart from that, the reporting system is just sitting there, waiting for the rare curious user who makes the effort to dig a bit for treasures to be found. Wouldn’t it be great if there were data triggers? Imagine we could configure the reporting system to let us know when something interesting has happened. It would send us a message containing a link that would take us to the relevant section of the reporting system, showing a report with all the data pertaining to that event, preparing us for proper actions. Here in the North West this would really be great. You see, it rains here most of the time from October to June, so why even check the weather forecast? But sometimes, sometimes it snows. And sometimes the sun shines. So rather than me going to the weather site and seeing over and over again that it will be raining, making me think “why bother?” I’d like to configure the weather site so that it lets me know when the rain stops. Now, hopefully nobody has patented this idea already. Let me know.

• nvidia-settings makes one of my dual monitors grey and useless, disables network

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit, Precise Pangolin, with a PNY GTS 250 1GB video card and a monitor plugged into each of the DVI ports. I'm using the proprietary drivers (post-release updates). If I set anything to do with Separate X Screens up in nvidia-settings (and write it to xorg.conf and reboot), my second monitor has a grey background, no menu bar, no ability to have a window on it, the second monitor doesn't get picked up in a screneshot, and if I move my mouse cursor to it it's an ugly black X. Plus, my network is unable to connect to anything. If I subsequently delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf and reboot, everything goes back to working, albeit with a single monitor activated. If I set anything to do with TwinView up in nvidia-settings, my second monitor starts working, but it isn't seen as a second monitor by Ubuntu, so I can't apply color calibration to it separately. Plus, my mouse gets "caught" between the monitors every time I try to move my cursor between the two. What gives? If it helps, this is the xorg.conf that nvidia-settings generates for Separate X Screens.

• How to prevent duplication of content on a page with too many filters?

  I have a webpage where a user can search for items based on around 6 filters. Currently I have the page implemented with one filter as the base filter (part of the url that would get indexed) and other filters in the form of hash urls (which won't get indexed). This way the duplication is less. Something like this example.com/filter1value-items#by-filter3-filter3value-filter2-filter2value Now as you may see, only one filter is within the reach of the search engine while the rest are hashed. This way I could have 6 pages. Now the problem is I expect users to use two filters as well at times while searching. As per my analysis using the Google Keyword Analyzer there are a fare bit of users that might use two filters in conjunction while searching. So how should I go about it? Having all the filters as part of the url would simply explode the number of pages and sticking to the current way wouldn't let me target those users. I was thinking of going with at max 2 base filters and rest as part of the hash url. But the only thing stopping me is that it would lead to duplication of content as per Google Webmaster Tool's suggestions on Url Structure.

  I'm having a problem with my game. If I press the "Home button" the game is paused... everythings fine, but if I then go back to the game all the resources are reloaded before I can continue the game. And it takes quite a bit. Is this normal, or is there a way to avoid the reloading? I have write following code in onResume and onPause method. • Memeory Leak in Windows Page file when calling a shell command

  I have an issue on our Windows 2003 x64 Build Server when invoking shell commands from a script. Each call causes a "memory leak" in the page file so it grows quite rapidly until it reaches the maximum and the machine stops working. I can reproduce the problem very nicely by running a perl script like for ($count=1; $count<5000; $count++) { system "echo huhu"; } It is independent of he scripting language as the same happens with lua: for i=1,5000 do os.execute("echo huhu") end I found somebody describing the same issue with php at http://www.issociate.de/board/post/454835/Memory_leak_occurs_when_exec%28%29_function_is_used_on_Windows_platform.html His solution: Firewall/Virus Scanner does not apply, neither are running on the machine. We can also reproduce the issue on other Developer Machines running XP 64, but not on XP 32 Bit. The guilty guy for the allocation is C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs which runs all the basic Windows services. Does anybody know the issue and how to resolve it ?
