• How can videos from Ubuntu drive appear on web page and play in an embedded Flash Player?

  I have a shared folder on Ubuntu Server 12.04. Users drop videos in. Ubuntu runs a Cron task to convert them to FLV format and put them into another folder. All I would like is a simple web page that displays all the files in that folder as links, and when you click on the link for the video you want to play, it should play in the same web page inside an embedded Flash/SWF player. Sounds really basic but I'm actually struggling to find a simple solution. Any thoughts appreciated!

• Desktop Apps in the Windows 8 Store?!?! That&rsquo;s Impossible!!!

  Or is it? Since Microsoft announced the Windows Store, the official word has been that desktop apps could not be distributed in the store.  But this morning I noticed this: That’s odd, but after clicking on one of these, I see that all it does is link to the website where you download Visual Studio So really, it’s not a desktop app in the store.  It’s more of an ad for a desktop app. Interestingly enough, despite the menu being ALL CAPS, Visual Studio 2012 is getting a nearly solid 5/5 stars.

• List symlinks in specific relative directories

  I have a server that shares out user home folders over the network. Each user has a Cache folder. Sometimes a symlink is used to redirect this folder to the hard drive of whichever machine they are using (and sometimes that doesn't work and they have a broken symlink [which is a matter for another day].) I'm trying to find out which users have symlinks and which don't. Within the shared folder, to get to the Cache folder you would substitute folders like so: $GRADE/$USERNAME/Library/Caches Right now I'm searching to see which users have symlinks and which do not. So, how do I properly formulate the search?

• Sun-JRE on CentOS-4.8 RPM error: post-install scriptlet failed, exit status 5

  I have a server with CentOS 4.8 installed. The provided is rubbish, but there's only a few months left, and they're busy being sued by Chase bank, so I doubt I can get CentOS 5. I wiped the server clean using Virtuozzo, and found that the default image is VERY empty. I even had to install yum myself. I've reached the point where I want to install TomCat. I downloaded the Sun JRE as a .rpm.bin file, did chmod a+x and ran it. • Create Advanced Panoramas with Microsoft Image Composite Editor

  Do you enjoy making panoramas with your pictures, but want more features than tools like Live Photo Gallery offer?  Here’s how you can create amazing panoramas for free with the Microsoft Image Composite Editor. Yesterday we took a look at creating panoramic photos in Windows Live Photo Gallery. Today we take a look at a free tool from Microsoft that will give you more advanced features to create your own masterpiece. Getting Started Download Microsoft Image Composite Editor from Microsoft Research (link below), and install as normal.  Note that there are separate version for 32 & 64-bit editions of Windows, so make sure to download the correct one for your computer. Once it’s installed, you can proceed to create awesome panoramas and extremely large image combinations with it.  Microsoft Image Composite Editor integrates with Live Photo Gallery, so you can create more advanced panoramic pictures directly.  Select the pictures you want to combine, click Extras in the menu bar, and select Create Image Composite. You can also create a photo stitch directly from Explorer.  Select the pictures you want to combine, right-click, and select Stitch Images… Or, simply launch the Image Composite Editor itself and drag your pictures into its editor.  Either way you start a image composition, the program will automatically analyze and combine your images.  This application is optimized for multiple cores, and we found it much faster than other panorama tools such as Live Photo Gallery. Within seconds, you’ll see your panorama in the top preview pane. From the bottom of the window, you can choose a different camera motion which will change how the program stitches the pictures together.  You can also quickly crop the picture to the size you want, or use Automatic Crop to have the program select the maximum area with a continuous picture.   Here’s how our panorama looked when we switched the Camera Motion to Planar Motion 2. But, the real tweaking comes in when you adjust the panorama’s projection and orientation.  Click the box button at the top to change these settings. The panorama is now overlaid with a grid, and you can drag the corners and edges of the panorama to change its shape. Or, from the Projection button at the top, you can choose different projection modes. Here we’ve chosen Cylinder (Vertical), which entirely removed the warp on the walls in the image.  You can pan around the image, and get the part you find most important in the center.  Click the Apply button on the top when you’re finished making changes, or click Revert if you want to switch to the default view settings. Once you’ve finished your masterpiece, you can export it easily to common photo formats from the Export panel on the bottom.  You can choose to scale the image or set it to a maximum width and height as well.  Click Export to disk to save the photo to your computer, or select Publish to Photosynth to post your panorama online. Alternately, from the File menu you can choose to save the panorama as .spj file.  This preserves all of your settings in the Image Composite Editor so you can edit it more in the future if you wish.   Conclusion Whether you’re trying to capture the inside of a building or a tall tree, the extra tools in Microsoft Image Composite Editor let you make nicer panoramas than you ever thought possible.  We found the final results surprisingly accurate to the real buildings and objects, especially after tweaking the projection modes.  This tool can be both fun and useful, so give it a try and let us know what you’ve found it useful for. • How can I get my SATA DVDs working again?

  My hard drive crashed (WinXPpro), so I took a C drive from a broken PC. The new C drive is Win7pro. Motherboard is MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum, with 4 hard drives installed on SATA 1-4 (nForce4 Ultra); the two DVD drives are loaded on SATA 7-8 (Silicon Image SATARAID5). I've tweaked BIOS settings every which way. The closest thing to success was when each DVD had both a CD and a DVD icon, and blinked green. No CD or DVD could be read in either drive. I assume that the problem resulted from the fact that my new C drive does not have the RAID drivers? I've tried loading from the floppy (doesn't work). I can't boot off the DVD/CD, and switching the DVD's SATA cable to the SATA 3 slot (and pulling one of the hard discs) didn't work. I'd like to be able to use the other two available SATA slots for a mirrored RAID drive, and get my DVDs working again. Any suggestions?

  I have a site that uses AJAX to query the Last.fm database and then dynamically draws a graph of the results on an HTML canvas. In the search function, I have a command that sets window.location.hash to the search parameters. I also have a function that checks if a hash was provided in the url and if so, generates the page. For example, http://www.thenlistento.com/#!/led+zeppelin will automatically navigate to a search page for Led Zeppelin. My question is, how do optimize this set up for SEO? Can it be done at all? I've taken a look at Google Webmaster Docs and read over the hashbang protocol, but I'm not totally sure how to apply it to my situation..or even if I can at all.   Given the social nature of most Wii games, modifying a toolbox to serve as a Wii briefcase to make toting it to a friend’s house easy is only fitting. When he found the $125 price tag prohibitive (as many of us would for such a side project) he sought out alternatives. • Setting environment variables when executing Eclipse via Unity launcher icon

  My question is a followup for the following: How to pin Eclipse to the Unity launcher? I created Eclipse's icon to the Unity launcher based on the selected answer at the above link. However, when I launch Eclipse via this icon, the environment variables are not properly set. I need to call . /opt/intel/bin/compilervars.sh intel64 to use Intel compiler tools in Eclipse. However, launching via the icon can't do it. Of course, running manually Eclipse on the terminal is okay. I tried to place . /opt/intel/bin/compilervars.sh intel64 on several places such as /etc/profile and /etc/bash.bashrc. But, still not working. Where is the best and correct place to call such environment setup?

  I have seen many websites supporting multiple forms of the same URL. For example consider www.example.com/question1/ OR www.example.com/Question1/ OR www.example.com/QUESTION1/ etc. all lead to one page with say <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com/question1/" > or a 301 redirect to www.example.com/question1/. Does this affect the page rank anyhow or its just for seemless user experience or there is some other reason behind this? Infact even stackoverflow/stackexchange does this. No matter what the text after the id of the question in url they redirect you to the correct question!

  If you have a plethora of old hardware laying around, especially motherboard and expansion cards, this obsolete-hardware-to-table hack is just the ticket for your office or geek cave. The table’s design is simple. They took a regular coffee table, affixed old mother boards to it and then, over the motherboards and elevated by acrylic standoffs, they put a heavy sheet of acrylic to serve as the table top. • Upgrading openSUSE 11.1 with Plesk Panel 9.3 to PHP 5.3

  Hello, I'm running a VPS with openSUSE 11.1 (i586). On the VPS is Parallels Plesk Panel 9.3.0 installed. The current PHP-version is PHP 5.2.11. I want to upgrade PHP to PHP 5.3, but I can't find good instructions on how to do this. If I check for updates in Zypper, it says this is the latest release. In the Plesk Updates isn't an update either, both via the webbased interface and the command line interface. On Software.openSUSE.org I can find packages for PHP 5.3.1 in both the server:php/server_apache_openSUSE_11.1-repo and the server:php/openSUSE_11.1-repo (can't post the link because I'm a newbie here). But if I add one of those to Zypper, I still don't see an update. Is there here somebody who knows how to do this? And is it completely safe to update that way? I don't want to end up with a broken VPS... Thanks! Jonathan

• Is it true that quickly closing a webpage opened from a search engine result can hurt the site's ranking?

  My web designer recently told me that I need to be careful not to Google for my business' website, click on its search result link, then quickly close the page (or click back) too many times. He says "Google knows" that I didn't stay on the page, and could penalize my site for having a high click-through rate if it happens too much (it was something along those lines- I forget the exact wording). Apparently, it could look like the behavior of a visitor who was not interested in what they found (hence the alleged detrimental effect on the site's search ranking). This sounds hard to believe to me because I would not have thought any information is transmitted which tells Google (or anyone, for that matter) whether or not a website is still open in a browser (in my case Firefox v25.0). Could there possibly be any truth to this? If not, why might he have come to this conclusion? • VirtualBox host: Ubuntu vs. Windows XP

  In order to lengthen the lifespan of my machine I am replacing the weakest link, the hard drive and installing a new OS. I had planned on using xp pro as my virtualbox host and ubuntu as guest. After messing with ubuntu desktop and server I am really impressed and am thinking of reversing the virtualbox setup; ubuntu host xp guest. I would use XP for Adobe Fireworks, Netflix, and iTunes (maybe) that's pretty much it. Any reason not to do ubuntu host with xp guest? I know the xp vbox will run slower as a guest but really how much slower? It's a desktop. 4gb ram, 500gb disk, Pent D 3.2 ghz

• That pestky Intel Centrino wireless N + WiMAX 6150 wireless card

  I'm new to linix and just got Ubuntu up and running on my ASUS laptop last night. Aside from the wireless everything seems to be working. The card is able to recognize networks but cannot make a full connection. After I enter my password it will try to connect before asking for the password again after a few minutes. I know the issue isn't the password because I checked that I had the right one. I've done some poking around trying to find a way to get it work. Linix recognizes the card as well. I found a link to some drivers in a question someone had about a WiMAX 6250 card and am curious if anyone knows if they would also work for the 6150 I have in my machine: https://github.com/ago/wimax-tools If not what can I do?
