  • Which is better: string html generation or jquery DOM element creation?

    - by Ed Woodcock
    Ok, I'm rewriting some vanilla JS functions in my current project, and I'm at a point where there's a lot of HTML being generated for tooltips etc. My question is, is it better/preferred to do this: var html = '<div><span>Some More Stuff</span></div>'; if (someCondition) { html += '<div>Some Conditional Content</div>'; } $('#parent').append(html); OR var html = $('<div/>').append($('<span/>').append('Some More Stuff')); if (someCondition) { html.append($('<div/>').append('Some conditionalContent'); } $('#parent').append(html); ?

  • How do I create and append an image with Javascript/jQuery?

    - by Chris Armstrong
    I'm using the following code to create an image element, load it, then append it to the article on load. $('<img />') .attr('src', 'image.png') //actually imageData[0].url .load(function(){ $('article').append( $(this) ); alert('image added'); }); The alert is firing off ok, but the image doesn't appear, and when I inspect the element it has been added without the closing slash <img src='image.png' > Why is the browser removing the forward slash and how do I stop it?

  • How can I collapse a nested list using jQuery?

    - by Bradley Herman
    I have a nested list: <ul> <li><a href='#'>stuff</a></li> <li><a href='#'>stuff2</a></li> <ul> <li><a href='#'>stuff3</a></li> </ul> <li><a href='#'>stuff4</a></li> </ul> ...and want to collapse the nested ul when the li is clicked. Before I was using $('UL LI').click(function(){ $(this).next().slideToggle(); }); ...but this obviously causes a problem when a li doesn't have a ul nested after it. Is there a better way to do this, or is there a way for me to determine if the object returned by $(this).next() is a UL?

  • Fix a 404: missing parameters error from a GET request to CherryPy

    - by norabora
    I'm making a webpage using CherryPy for the server-side, HTML, CSS and jQuery on the client-side. I'm also using a mySQL database. I have a working form for users to sign up to the site - create a username and password. I use jQuery to send an AJAX POST request to the CherryPy which queries the database to see if that username exists. If the username exists, alert the user, if it doesn't, add it to the database and alert success. $.post('submit', postdata, function(data) { alert(data); }); Successful jQuery POST. I want to change the form so that instead of checking that the username exists on submit, a GET request is made as on the blur event from the username input. The function gets called, and it goes to the CherryPy, but then I get an error that says: HTTPError: (404, 'Missing parameters: username'). $.get('checkUsername', getdata, function(data) { alert(data); }); Unsuccessful jQuery GET. The CherryPy: @cherrypy.expose def submit(self, **params): cherrypy.response.headers['Content-Type'] = 'application/json' e = sqlalchemy.create_engine('mysql://mysql:pw@localhost/6470') c = e.connect() com1 = "SELECT * FROM `users` WHERE `username` = '" + params["username"] + "'" b = c.execute(com1).fetchall() if not len(b) > 0: com2 = "INSERT INTO `6470`.`users` (`username` ,`password` ,`website` ,`key`) VALUES ('" com2 += params["username"] + "', MD5( '" + params["password"] + "'), '', NULL);" a = c.execute(com2) c.close() return simplejson.dumps("Success!") #login user and send them to home page c.close() return simplejson.dumps("This username is not available.") @cherrypy.expose def checkUsername(self, username): cherrypy.response.headers['Content-Type'] = 'application/json' e = sqlalchemy.create_engine('mysql://mysql:pw@localhost/6470') c = e.connect() command = "SELECT * FROM `users` WHERE `username` = '" + username + "'" a = c.execute(command).fetchall(); c.close() sys.stdout.write(str(a)) return simplejson.dumps("") I can't see any differences between the two so I don't know why the GET request is giving me a problem. Any insight into what I might be doing wrong would be helpful. If you have ideas about the jQuery, CherryPy, config files, anything, I'd really appreciate it.

  • Is there a sexier way to write this jQuery selector?

    - by Bears will eat you
    I want to select all the children of the body element before element with id foo (which is a child of body). Since it doesn't look like there are :before() or :after() selectors, I've got it working like this: $('body > :first').nextUntil('#foo').andSelf(); but it seems kludgy. Could this be done with fewer function calls, or more efficiently? Maybe something akin to $('body > *:before(#foo)') ?

  • Javascript scope problem with object and setTimeout

    - by Shabbyrobe
    I'm trying to make a jQuery plugin that executes a method on a timer. I'd like it to work on multiple elements on a page independently. I've reached a point where the timer executes for each element, but the method called in the setTimeout seems to only know about the last instance of the plugin. I know I'm doing something fundamentally stupid here, but I'm danged if I know what. I know stuff like this has been asked 8 million times on here before, but I've not managed to find an answer that relates to my specific problem. Here's a script that demonstrates the structure of what I'm doing. <html> <head> <script type="text/javascript" src="assets/jquery.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> var crap = 0; (function($) { jQuery.fn.pants = function(options) { var trousers = { id: null, current: 0, waitTimeMs: 1000, begin: function() { var d = new Date(); this.id = crap++; console.log(this.id); // do a bunch of stuff window.setTimeout(function(self) {return function() {self.next();}}(this), this.waitTimeMs); }, next: function() { this.current ++; console.log(this.id); window.setTimeout(function(self) {return function() {self.next();}}(this), this.waitTimeMs); }, }; options = options || {}; $.extend(trousers, options); this.each(function(index, element) { trousers.begin(); }); return this; }; } )(jQuery); jQuery(document).ready(function() { jQuery("div.wahey").pants(); }); </script> </head> <body> <div class="wahey"></div> <div class="wahey"></div> </body> </html> The output I get is this: 0 1 1 1 1 1 The output I expect to get is this: 0 1 0 1 0 1

  • how to do a smooth scrolling + fade in live feed with jquery?

    - by ijjo
    i've found a lot of news ticker plugins that kinda do what i need, but not exactly. i want to do exactly what twitter.com does on their home page with the "Top Tweets". facebook also does this on their feed. basically whenever i have a new item i want all the LIs to scroll down, make room for the new LI on top, and fade it in. the newsticker plugins i've seen all scroll through a set amount of LIs, but i want to dynamically add a new one...

  • Using JQuery to get text of a div that's a child of a header to replace a different header

    - by Stevie Jenowski
    Hello all, I'm trying to get the text contents of a .div('.child#') child of my event.target('h6.class'), and replace my other headers('h1.replacHeader#') using this script below... $('h6.class').click(function(event) { var $target = $(event.target); $('.replaceHeader1').replaceWith("<h1 class='replaceHeader1'>" + $target.children(".child1").text() + "</h1>"); $('.replaceHeader2').replaceWith("<h1 class='replaceHeader2'>" + $target.children(".child2").text() + "</h1>"); }); }); I've noticed that .text() apparently doesn't apply to an event.target... So how could I go about achieving this?

  • How do I load content with ujs, jquery and rails?

    - by Joseph Silvashy
    I'm trying to figure out the best way to insert content into a light box using rails UJS. I have a link that looks like this: <%= link_to "login", login_path, :remote => true %> Which produces html as such: <a data-remote="true" href="/login">login</a> So this all works great, and I've created the view file: user_sessions/new.js.erb which also loads just fine, but my question what is the preferred method of inserting appending the html into the page? Like I already have the login form on the non-js page, so can't I just load that partial into the page? Any ideas would be very welcomed.

  • How can I determine if an image has loaded, using Javascript/jQuery?

    - by Kip
    I'm writing some Javascript to resize the large image to fit into the user's browser window. (I don't control the size of the source images unfortunately.) So something like this would be in the HTML: <img id="photo" src="a_really_big_file.jpg" alt="this is some alt text" title="this is some title text" /> Is there a way for me to determine if the src image in an img tag has been downloaded? I need this because I'm running into a problem if $(document).ready() is executed before the browser has loaded the image. $("#photo").width() and $("#photo").height() will return the size of the placeholder (the alt text). In my case this is something like 134 x 20. Right now I'm just checking if the photo's height is less than 150, and assuming that if so it is just alt text. But this is quite a hack, and it would break if a photo is less than 150 pixels tall (not likely in my particular case), or if the alt text is more than 150 pixels tall (could possibly happen on a small browser window). Edit: For anyone wanting to see the code: $(function() { var REAL_WIDTH = $("#photo").width(); var REAL_HEIGHT = $("#photo").height(); $(window).resize(adjust_photo_size); adjust_photo_size(); function adjust_photo_size() { if(REAL_HEIGHT < 150) { REAL_WIDTH = $("#photo").width(); REAL_HEIGHT = $("#photo").height(); if(REAL_HEIGHT < 150) { //image not loaded.. try again in a quarter-second setTimeout(adjust_photo_size, 250); return; } } var new_width = . . . ; var new_height = . . . ; $("#photo").width(Math.round(new_width)); $("#photo").height(Math.round(new_height)); } }); Update: Thanks for the suggestions. There is a risk of the event not being fired if I set a callback for the $("#photo").load event, so I have defined an onLoad event directly on the image tag. For the record, here is the code I ended up going with: <img id="photo" onload="photoLoaded();" src="a_really_big_file.jpg" alt="this is some alt text" title="this is some title text" /> Then in Javascript: //This must be outside $() because it may get called first var isPhotoLoaded = false; function photoLoaded() { isPhotoLoaded = true; } $(function() { //Hides scrollbars, so we can resize properly. Set with JS instead of // CSS so that page doesn't break with JS disabled. $("body").css("overflow", "hidden"); var REAL_WIDTH = -1; var REAL_HEIGHT = -1; $(window).resize(adjust_photo_size); adjust_photo_size(); function adjust_photo_size() { if(!isPhotoLoaded) { //image not loaded.. try again in a quarter-second setTimeout(adjust_photo_size, 250); return; } else if(REAL_WIDTH < 0) { //first time in this function since photo loaded REAL_WIDTH = $("#photo").width(); REAL_HEIGHT = $("#photo").height(); } var new_width = . . . ; var new_height = . . . ; $("#photo").width(Math.round(new_width)); $("#photo").height(Math.round(new_height)); } });

  • How can I dynamically resize the jQuery Colorbox plugin?

    - by James Skidmore
    The AJAX content loaded in a Colorbox has some JavaScript included that resizes things within the content. Colorbox determines its sizing based on the sizes before all of the AJAX happens. How can I make the Colorbox resize after the content has been loaded? Here is a link where someone said that you can call colorbox() again after it's been loaded, but I can't figure out how to do that: http://groups.google.com/group/colorbox/browse_thread/thread/535d21c69e9006b0

  • Why can't I get the value of this text input?

    - by Spilot
    It seems simple enough, but nothing I try is working. I have a jquery ui datepicker, I use val() to get the value of that input on button click(), then log it. The click event is working. I can log a string I write myself, but when I pass console.log() the variable that stores the datepicker value...nothing. I've tried using html() and text() instead of val(), still nothing //JS $(function(){ $("button").button(); $("#date").datepicker(); var date = $("#date").val(); $("button").click(function(){ // this logs console.log("event working"); // but this logs nothing console.log(date); });//close click });//closes function //HTML <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <script src="http://www.parsecdn.com/js/parse-1.2.8.min.js"></script> <script src="//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.10.1/jquery.min.js"></script> <script src="http://code.jquery.com/ui/1.10.3/jquery-ui.js"></script> <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://myDomain/bn/lbStyle.css"/> <script src="http://myDomain/index.js"></script> <title> Welcome to The Bringer Network </title> </head> <body> <form id="dialog"> <p>Date <input type="text" id="date"/></p> <button>Submit</button> </form> </body> </html>

  • jQuery is it possible to concatenate two selector variables?

    - by Kris Hollenbeck
    Lets say I have two variables defining separate selectors, for example... var parent = $('.parent'); var child = $('.child'); And I want to create a something like the following... $(parent + child).click(); Which should be equivalent to doing this (if it was correct syntax)... $('.parent .child').click(); This may not be best practice, however I am curious if it is possible. Thanks for your help in advance.

  • Stop IE6 overwriting Button text when setting value.

    - by RoToRa
    I've got a button which contains a span I need for styling: <button id="example" name="example" value="Example"><span>Example</span></button> IE6 has a bug that it submits the contents of the button instead of it's value, but I've already worked around that. Now I need to change the value of the button and the text in the span in JavaScript/jQuery: jQuery("#example").val("Changed").children("span").text("Changed"); However IE6 also changes the contents of the button when setting the value per JavaScript/jQuery, so that the span is lost. Does any one know of a way other that identifying IE6 with jQuery.browser that I could use to avoid that?
