• my windows forms application throws filenotfoundexception when run on another machine

  Hi, I have created a windows forms application using vs2008. when i copy the bin folder over to another machine and try to run it the applicaiton throws a filenotfoundexception error. Ive looked at the references files used in the project and each file points to either c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727... c:\Program Files\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\Framework\v3.5... c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Visual Basic Power Packs\1.1... i have verified that these directories exist on the other machines that cause the error. the two machines that i have tried it on and that throw there error are Windows XP WITHOUT VS2008 installed and Windows 7 with VS2008 installed I tried on two machine that DID work which are Windows XP with VS2008 and and my development machine Windows 7 with VS2008 Could anyone provide me with some insight on this issue Thanks

• Is there a faster alternative to using textures in XNA?

  I am writing a map editing program for a 2D game using XNA. To create a Texture2D for all of the tiles that a map requires takes too long. Are there any alternatives to using textures for drawing with XNA? I attempted to create just one texture per tile set instead of a texture for every tile in a tile set, but there is a limit to the size of textures and I could not fit all the tiles of a tile set into one texture. Currently the program contains all the would-be textures in memory as Bitmap objects. Is there a way to simply draw a Bitmap object to the screen in XNA? I have searched but I cannot find any information on this. This approach would avoid having to create textures altogether, however any tinting or effects I would have to do to the bitmap directly. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks

  Hi Everybody, Greetings! I got surprised when the following program did not crash. typedef struct _x{ int a; char b; int c; }x; main() { x *ptr=0; char *d=&ptr->b; } As per my understanding the -> operator has higher precedence over & operator. So I expected the program to crash at the below statement when we try to dereference the NULL pointer tr. char *d=&ptr->b; But the statement &ptr->b evaluates to a valid address. • Negative execution time

  Hello, I wrote a little program that solves 49151 sudoku's within an hour for an assignment, but we had to time it. I thought I'd just let it run and then check the execution time, but it says -1536.087 s. I'm guessing it has to do with the timer being some signed dataype or something, but I have no idea what datatype is used for the timer in the console (code::blocks console, I'm not sure if this is actually a separate console, or just a runner that runs the terminal from the local operating system), so I can't check what the real time was. I'd rather not run this again with some coded timer within my program, since I'd like to be able to use my pc again now. Anybody have any idea what this time could be? It should be somewhere between 40 and 50 minutes, so between 2400 and 3000 seconds. Regards, Erik

  I'm using a GZIPInputStream in my program, and I know that the performance would be helped if I could get Java running my program in parallel. In general, is there a command-line option for the standard VM to run on many cores? It's running on just one as it is. Thanks! Edit I'm running plain ol' Java SE 6 update 17 on Windows XP. Would putting the GZIPInputStream on a separate thread explicitly help? No! Do not put the GZIPInputStream on a separate thread! Do NOT multithread I/O! • C# Sharp Windows Application prevents Windows from shutting down / logging off

  I have written a C# Windows Forms application, not a service (it is only used when the user is logged in and has a graphical user interface) that has a background thread running in an infinite loop. When I try shutting down Windows (7) however, it tells me the program is preventing it from shutting down or logging off and asks me whether I want to force a shutdown. Now, is there any possibility for my program to become aware (get a handler) of Windows trying to quit it or to log off? So, what I need is to make the application realize when Windows tries to quit. I looked up the system call for creating a directory on this page: http://www.ctyme.com/intr/rb-8144.htm It says that it is identified by 27h. How would I go about implementing the "mkdir somename" in assembly? I am aware that the program should move 27 into eax but I am unsure where to go next. I have googled quite a bit and no one seems to have posted anthing about this online.   I was porting a C++ program from Solaris Sparc to Solaris x86. The program utilizes OpenGL library and the compilation is performed in a Sun Ultra27 workstation with the default GCC (3.4.3) and OpenGL library come with the machine. However, the following OpenGL call couldn't found while linking: Undefined symbol first referenced in file sunOglCurPrimTablePtr ../../lib/libgltt.so sunOglCurrentContext ../../lib/libgltt.so which, both sunOglCurPrimTablePtr and sunOglCurrentContext should be available in the default OpenGL library /usr/lib/libGL.so (links to /usr/X11/lib/NVIDIA/libGL.so.1). But I couldn't find anything from it: > nm /usr/lib/libGL.so /usr/lib/libGL.so: Searching on web, SUN or Nvidia didn't lead to any helpful resource. Any clue or helps? Thanks!

  I’m running a batch to do an update to my sql table. I’m using windows scheduler to run the batch file. Each day files come in at different time. Sometime they come in after my scheduled time therefore the batch file doesn’t run when there’s no file before the scheduled task in the folder. I want to create a c# program where it will loop through the folder until it finds the files and then move to the next step in the batch file. Basically my goal is to create a program that will look for those particular files and once they finds the correct files then it will start the update. I’m new to programming and need some direction.   I've been trying to get started with unit-testing while working on a little cli program. My program basically parses the command line arguments and options, and decides which function to call. Each of the functions performs some operation on a database. So, for instance, I might have a create function: def create(self, opts, args): #I've left out the error handling. strtime = datetime.datetime.now().strftime("%D %H:%M") vals = (strtime, opts.message, opts.keywords, False) self.execute("insert into mytable values (?, ?, ?, ?)", vals) self.commit() Should my test case call this function, then execute the select sql to check that the row was entered? That sounds reasonable, but also makes the tests more difficult to maintain. Would you rewrite the function to return something and check for the return value? Thanks

• Detecting Infinite recursion in Python or dynamic languages

  Recently I tried compiling program something like this with GCC: int f(int i){ if(i<0){ return 0;} return f(i-1); and it ran just fine. When I inspected the stack frames the compiler optimized the program to use only one frame, by just jumping back to the beginning of the function and only replacing the arguments to f. And - the compiler wasn't even running in optimized mode. Now, when I try the same thing in Python - I hit maximum recursion wall (or stack overflow). Is there way that a dynamic language like python can take advantage of these nice optimizations? Maybe it's possible to use a compiler instead of an interpreter to make this work? Just curious!

• How to be sure that my MVC project is running on the correct version after upgrade to vs2010?

  I just installed visual studio 2010 and upgraded my MVC project (which was running on MVC RC2 in visual studio 2008). visual studio 2010 updated every project file to target the framework 4.0. But the system.web.dll is pointing to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft ASP.NET\ASP.NET MVC 2\Assemblies\System.Web.Mvc.dll in VS2010 object browser, I have every dll showing up in multiple versions as expected (3.5.0.0 and 4.0.0.0) except for the System.Web.Mvc dll which doesn't show any version and points to the path I mentioned above. Isn't this namespace point to the Framework folder like the System.Web namespace? C:\Program Files (x86)\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\Framework.NETFramework\v4.0\System.Web.dll

• Strcpy() corrupts the copied string in Solaris but not Linux

  Hi all, I'm writing a C code for a class. This class requires that our code compile and run on the school server, which is a sparc solaris machine. I'm running Linux x64. I have this line to parse (THIS IS NOT ACTUAL CODE BUT IS INPUT TO MY PROGRAM): while ( cond1 ){ I need to capture the "while" and the "cond1" into separate strings. I've been using strtok() to do this. In Linux, the following lines: char *cond = NULL; cond = (char *)malloc(sizeof(char)); memset(cond, 0, sizeof(char)); strcpy(cond, strtok(NULL, ": \t\(){")); //already got the "while" out of the line will correctly capture the string "cond1".Running this on the solaris machine, however, gives me the string "cone1". Note that in plenty of other cases within my program, strings are being copied correctly. (For instance, the "while") was captured correctly. Does anyone know what is going on here?

  I was going through one of the threads. A program crashed because It had declared an array of 10^6 locally inside a function. Reason being given was memory allocation failure on stack leads to crash. when same array was declared globally, it worked well.(memory on heap saved it). Now for the moment ,Let us suppose, stack grows downward and heap upwards. We have: ---STACK--- ---HEAP---- Now , I believe that if there is failure in allocation on stack, it must fail on heap too. So my question is :Is there any limit on stack size? (crossing the limit caused the program to crash). Or Am I missing something?

  Greetings! Last semester in college, my teacher in the Computer Languages class taught us the esoteric language named Whitespace. In the interest of learning the language better with a very busy schedule (midterms), I wrote an interpreter and assembler in Python. An assembly language was designed to facilitate writing programs easily, and a sample program was written with the given assembly mnemonics. Now that it is summer, a new project has begun with the objective being to rewrite the interpreter and assembler for Whitespace 0.3, with further developments coming afterwards. Since there is so much extra time than before to work on its design, you are presented here with an outline that provides a revised set of mnemonics for the assembly language. This post is marked as a wiki for their discussion. Have you ever had any experience with assembly languages in the past? Were there some instructions that you thought should have been renamed to something different?
