• SSL cert install in Mongrel

  Running a RoR app. I've created a self-signed SSL cert for my test/dev environment, which consists of a single mongrel, and Mac OS X Leopard. Can I install the SSL cert in such a way that mongrel will use it, or do I have build a different server stack to handle SSL (e.g. Apache in front of a mongrel cluster), and install the cert inside of Apache? For my production server, I'll eventually build a server stack like this, so it's no big deal if I have to go that direction - it's just a question of now or later. Thanks!

  In a linux application I'm using pipes to pass information between threads. The idea behind using pipes is that I can wait for multiple pipes at once using poll(2). That works well in practice, and my threads are sleeping most of the time and only wake up if there is something to do for them. On the user-space the pipes look just like two file-handles. Now I wonder wonder how much resources such a pipes use on the OS side. Btw: In my application I only send single bytes every now and then. Think about my pipes as simple message queues that allow me to wake-up receiving threads, tell them to send some status-data or to terminate.

• Boost asio async vs blocking reads, udp speed/quality

  I have a quick and dirty proof of concept app that I wrote in C# that reads high data rate multicast UDP packets from the network. For various reasons the full implementation will be written in C++ and I am considering using boost asio. The C# version used a thread to receive the data using blocking reads. I had some problems with dropped packets if the computer was heavily loaded (generally with processing those packets in another thread). What I would like to know is if the async read operations in boost (which use overlapped io in windows) will help ensure that I receive the packets and/or reduce the cpu time needed to receive the packets. The single thread doing blocking reads is pretty straightforward, using the async reads seems like a step up in complexity, but I think it would be worth it if it provided higher performance or dropped fewer packets on a heavily loaded system. Currently the data rate should be no higher than 60Mb/s.

  After periods of inactivity on my website (Using Spring 2.5 and MySql), I get the following error: org.springframework.dao.RecoverableDataAccessException: The last packet sent successfully to the server was 52,847,830 milliseconds ago. is longer than the server configured value of 'wait_timeout'. You should consider either expiring and/or testing connection validity before use in your application, increasing the server configured values for client timeouts, or using the Connector/J connection property 'autoReconnect=true' to avoid this problem. According to this question, and the linked bug, I shouldn't just set autoReconnect=true. Does this mean I have to catch this exception on any queries I do and then retry the transaction? Should that logic be in the data access layer, or the model layer? Is there an easy way to handle this instead of wrapping every single query to catch this?

• Can I use imp/exp tools to migrate database from Oracle 9 to Oracle 10

  I'm subcontractor and my client wants to upgrade Oracle database from 9 to 10. Other vendor is going to perform the upgrade process, and I was asked to create whatever backup I need before the upgrade, and then recreate the environment in Oracle 10. All my data is stored in a separate database in a single schema. No fancy relations, scripts or anything like this (actual app supports different dbs: Oracle, SQL Server, Postgres so we want to avoid any DB-specific code). I was hoping to use imp/exp but I'm not sure if imp/exp are backward compatible (exp from O9 and imp to O10)? If there is a better/recommended way of dealing with similar situation, I'll be grateful for any advice.

I would like to read the PDF on my phone, in order to get familiar with a code-base, or just to see what I can learn by reading a lot of code. I will most often be reading Ruby. I would prefer if the tool ran on Linux. I don't mind paying for a tool if it is particularly good. Any suggestions?

  Hi, I'm having a couple of problems with the JQuery tablesorter plugin. If you click on a column header, it should sort the data by this column, but there are a couple of problems: The rows are not properly sorted (1, 1, 2183, 236) The total row is included in the sort Regarding (2), I can't easily move the total row to a table footer, because the HTML is generated by the displaytag tag library over which I have limited control. Regarding (1), I don't understand why the sort doesn't work as I've used exactly the same JavaScript shown in the simplest example in the tablesorter tutorials. • Threading Issue with WCF Service

  I'm new to both WCF and threading, so please bear with me. I have a WCF service set up. The service has multiple threads, all of which act upon a single array. This works without a problem so far. However, this service has a method, which, when called, will return the array. My questions: The array is serialized when it is transferred to the client by WCF. Is this a thread safe operation? In other words, can I count on WCF to block all threads from accessing this array while it's being serialized? If I can't count on WCF to do this, then how can I implement it manually? I don't really understand how WCF would facilitate this since the serialization happens after I return from my method call. How can I guarantee a thread will not modify the array after it's been returned by my method but before WCF serializes it?

I'm using netbeans 6.8 and everything I've tried java always spit back the error: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: libraryname; off topic:also i would like to know how to make an executable-jar(exe) through netbeans if it is possible. (ive seen programs that were written in java but were an .exe) EDIT discovered a plugin for eclipse called FatJar which can do what i want, but i cant find something similar for netbeans, is there such thing?

• PHP: Set max_file_uploads for one file rather than php.ini

  Like many variables in PHP using ini_set() on a page doesn't actually work. I've recently upgraded my PHP version and found that my multiple image uploader is now capped. After 3 hours of frustration, I've found that my new PHP install has the new "max_file_uploads" parameter set to "20". So only the first 7 images get uploaded (each is in three sizes, 7*3=21). I can now change my php.ini value of "max_file_uploads" to 300, but I'd rather not do that side wide. Is there any way to set that value just for a single file (upload.php)? Could a .htaccess file be used for this?

• How should one import large amounts of data for FIT/Fitnesse tests?

  We have a scheduling engine with large amounts of test data to test all the scenarios, so test automation is critical. We're currently hoping to use FIT/Fitnesse. However a single test has quite a large table of test data, so it doesn't fit very well into the mould of "two or three inputs, one or more outputs" that Fitnesse uses in its examples. Hopefully the other functionality of Fitnesse makes it worth using it. I hear that there is a way to initialize an application for a FIT test with an Excel spreadsheet - not the Spreadsheet to Fitness function, mind you - but I haven't been able to find it so far. Once the whole spreadsheet is loaded into the application, and the application does its thing, we plan to compare either a number of output rows, or perhaps just the last row, to see if the test passes. The application is currently pulling test data from a database for manual tests, but writing to a database, then initializing from it, is not preferred because of the performance impact. The application is written in C#.

  I'm trying to use xUnit.net as the test runner for SpecFlow. The SpecFlow 1.2 binaries from the official download area don't contain an xUnit.net provider but the master branch on GitHub has one, so I build SpecFlow.Core.dll from that. I'm using xUnit.net 1.5. However, when I change the unitTestProvider name in the app.config in my spec project, I get a null reference custom tool error and the generated .feature.cs file is the single line: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Has anyone succeeded in getting SpecFlow to work with xUnit.net? If so, how?

• Prime Numbers Code Help

  Hello Everybody, I am suppose to "write a Java program that reads a positive integer n from standard input, then prints out the first n prime number." It's divided into 3 parts. 1st: This function will return true or false according to whether m is prime or composite. The array argument P will contain a sufficient number of primes to do the testing. Specifically, at the time isPrime() is called, array P must contain (at least) all primes p in the range 2 p m . For instance, to test m = 53 for primality, one must do successive trial divisions by 2, 3, 5, and 7. We go no further since 11 53 . Thus a precondition for the function call isPrime(53, P) is that P[0] = 2 , P[1] = 3 , P[2] = 5, and P[3] = 7 . The return value in this case would be true since all these divisions fail. Similarly to test m =143 , one must do trial divisions by 2, 3, 5, 7, and 11 (since 13 143 ). The precondition for the function call isPrime(143, P) is therefore P[0] = 2 , P[1] = 3 , P[2] = 5, P[3] = 7 , and P[4] =11. The return value in this case would be false since 11 divides 143. Function isPrime() should contain a loop that steps through array P, doing trial divisions. This loop should terminate when 2 either a trial division succeeds, in which case false is returned, or until the next prime in P is greater than m , in which case true is returned. Then there is the "main function" • Check that the user supplied exactly one command line argument which can be interpreted as a positive integer n. If the command line argument is not a single positive integer, your program will print a usage message as specified in the examples below, then exit. • Allocate array Primes[] of length n and initialize Primes[0] = 2 . • Enter a loop which will discover subsequent primes and store them as Primes[1] , Primes[2], Primes[3] , ……, Primes[n -1] . This loop should contain an inner loop which walks through successive integers and tests them for primality by calling function isPrime() with appropriate arguments. • Print the contents of array Primes[] to stdout, 10 to a line separated by single spaces. In other words Primes[0] through Primes[9] will go on line 1, Primes[10] though Primes[19] will go on line 2, and so on. Note that if n is not a multiple of 10, then the last line of output will contain fewer than 10 primes. The last function is called "usage" which I am not sure how to execute this! Your program will include a function called Usage() having signature static void Usage() that prints this message to stderr, then exits. Thus your program will contain three functions in all: main(), isPrime(), and Usage(). Each should be preceded by a comment block giving it’s name, a short description of it’s operation, and any necessary preconditions (such as those for isPrime().) • Asp.net override Membership settings at runtime (asp.net mvc)

  I had an application that hooked onto 1 single database. The app now needs to hook into multiple databases. What we want to do is, using the same application/domain/hostname/virtual dir give the user the option on the login screen to select the "App/Database" they want to connect into. Each database has the App tables/data/procs/etc as well as the aspnet membership/roles stuff. When the user enters the username/password and selects (select list) the application, I want to validate the user against the selected applications database. Presently the database connection string for membership services is saved in the web.config. Is there any way I can override this at login time? Also, I need the "remember me" function to work smoothly as well. How does this work when the user comes back to the app in 5 hours... This process should be able to identify the user and application and log in appropriately.

• What documentation is helpful when supporting an application?

  I am going to be taking over from a developer here at work soon. Hence, I'll be supporting all the applications that he has written over the last few years. My question is, when supporting an application that you probably don't know much about, what kind of documentation is most helpful to get a handle on how to fix problems, extend functionality, modify functionality, etc? I'm thinking it would need to give you an overview of what the software does, what interfaces it has to other software, what databases it uses, usernames, passwords, and so on. Is there such a thing as a software support document? Referrals to any templates would be most helpful. BTW, unfortunately, there are no requirements documents, specs, etc! So, really my question is, if my colleague had a day to write a single document for each application so that I could (more easily) support it, what would that document be and/or what would it look like?
