• Vagrant - Failed login, ssh not set up

  This question is two fold because somewhere in my attempts to solve the problem, I created a new one. First: I was trying to vagrant up using a Vagranfile based on the standard hashicorp/precise32 box. Everything worked up until default: SSH auth method: private key where it would eventually time out. Enabling gui in the Vagrantfile showed that the machine never actually logs in. I can use the standard user/pass and log in from that point but the vagrant up process still remains at that prior status. Here's where my understanding might be a little dim. I've tried setting auth method from the insecure_pass_key to my root ~/.ssh/id_rsa or whichever one I wanted to use. I'm not entirely sure where to put a copy of the public key or my authorized keys file. I've got a .vagrant.d folder in my user dir (I'm on OSX) which seems to contain the box images. I've got a .vagrant folder in my directory with the Vagrantfile which seems to contain the specific machine I am building off of. I've tried pouring over the docs and forums but I seem to be missing a key concept here. And Now: After a host of tips/tricks such as rolling back by VirtualBox install, uninstalling/reinstalling Vagrant and VritualBox several times, when I try to run vagrant ssh-config with a Vagrantfile based on the same hashicorp/precise32 it says that the box is not enabled for SSH. Specifically, this error: The provider for this Vagrant-managed machine is reporting that it is not yet ready for SSH. Depending on your provider this can carry different meanings. Make sure your machine is created and running and try again. Additionally, check the output of `vagrant status` to verify that the machine is in the state that you expect. If you continue to get this error message, please view the documentation for the provider you're using. So now I am slightly up a creek. Any help would be appreciated if not just clarifying a concept. Some pertinent info: I'm on OSX Maverics Due to the fact I'm running a dual HD system with system files on one HD and user files on another, my permissions are a little wonky and VBoxManage will only let me run commands via Sudo - not sure if it's pertinent - but maybe. I have no idea what I'm doing. That part is perhaps more important.

• RHEL 6.x on Rackspace Cloud and Dedicated hardware experiencing Redis Timeouts

  I just recently set up a mixture of RHEL 6.1 Rackspace cloud hosts and RHEL 6.2 dedicated hosts using Rackconnect. I am experiencing intermittent Redis timeouts from within our Rails 3.2.8 app with Redis 2.4.16 running on the RHEL 6.2 dedicated hosts. There is no network latency or packet loss. Also there are no errors on any interfaces on our cloud or dedicated servers or on the managed firewall from Rackspace. When Redis timesout, there is nothing logged within redis even though it is set up to do debug logging. The only error we receive is from Airbrake saying there was a Redis timeout. • xen-create-image does not create inird or initramfs image and domU does not starts with system image

  I have Fedora 19 as Dom0. • 'SImple' 2 class Java calculator doesn't accept inputs or do calculations

  Hi, I'm trying to get a two class java calculator working (new to java) to work but so far i'm having no success. the two classes are outlined below, calcFrame is for the interface and calEngine should do the actual calculations but i can't get them to talk to one another. i'd really appreciate any assistance on same. • List repositories from multiple projects in Trac using mod_python

  Currently working on a customized webpage that shows the available projects I have in Trac (1.0.1). I am using mod_python to connect the trac interface. I found a standard page for this, but it didn't show listing of repositories. The page showed some variables to link to the different projects, but I can't find variables to the different repositories inside the projects. Is there a simple way to find the rest of the variables ? And how hard is it to add more variables? Will it perhaps be easier to do this an alternative way ? All I need is to link to the repositories dynamically

• Rsync: windows 7, synology: login error and permission denied error

  Good day to all of you all, I'm running into strange/stupid errors, and I hope anybody would be so kind to help me out. I have to admit, I am by no means a guru, so please bear with me :-) Situation: -Synology NAS (runs Linux), and Windows 7 desktop (1 normal/restricted user Lisa and 1 admin user). - Data from W7 desktop to be rsynced to synology: /volume1/home/Lisa/Backup - Rsync command: c:\cygwin\bin\rsync -avz /cygdrive/e/Lisa/ [email protected]:/volume1/homes/Lisa/Backup - I've set up ssh per these two threads: a. http://www.cesareriva.com/archives/102 b. http://www.cesareriva.com/archives/112 Now the horrors begin: - root is allowed to run the rsync succesfully, however, he doesn't login automatically (so I can not use rsync in W7 batchscripts, which is of course required). - Lisa is allowed to login automatically but he can not succesfully finish the rsync command because of permission errors: rsync change dir /volume1/homes/Lisa/Backup failed: permissions denied. This happens for each and every file and subdir rsync tries to create. However, the main directory (Backup) is created. When I try to copy files from windows explorer to the directory 'Backup' using the very same user Lisa everything goes smoothly. So, obviously, there is a permission problem somewhere; either my rsync-command isn't correct, or the folder permissions for homes/Lisa aren't correct (but, then again, Windows 7 copies files to that folder without any problems, so that does make me believe the homes/Lisa-permissions don't appear to be the problem). I also tried adding: --chmod=Dugo+x --chmod=ugo+r which I found somewhere on the web, to the rsync-command, but this didn't solve any problem and gave the exact errors. Would anybody please please help me on how to fix this? I am utterly frustrated about this, because I have been trying for 1 month to get everything to work and it simply doesn't work. I bought the big Synology to end the horrors of 20 external USB-disks for once and for all (we have many pictures and home vids of our deceased dogs and want to watch these, the horrors being 'what material is on what disk'). I'll gladly return the favour of somebody helping me out by buying you a nice beer (paypal), if you could end my misery. I am not extremely skilled on Linux (not at all :-( ) so if you could give an extra word when possible so I understand what to do, I'd be very grateful. • Specifying prerequisites for Puppet custom facts?

  I have written a custom Puppet fact that requires the biosdevname tool to be installed. I'm not sure how to set things up correctly such that this tool will be installed before facter tries to instantiate the custom fact. Facts are loaded early on in the process, so I can't simply put a package { biosdevname: ensure => installed } in the manifest, since by the time Puppet gets this far the custom fact has already failed. I was curious if I could resolve this through Puppet's run stages. I tried: stage { pre: before => Stage[main] } class { biosdevname: stage => pre } And: class biosdevname { package { biosdevname: ensure => installed } } But this doesn't work...Puppet loads facts before entering the pre stage: info: Loading facts in physical_network_config ./physical_network_config.rb:33: command not found: biosdevname -i eth0 info: Applying configuration version '1320248045' notice: /Stage[pre]/Biosdevname/Package[biosdevname]/ensure: created Etc. Is there any way to make this work? EDIT: I should make it clear that I understand, given a suitable package declaration, that the fact will run correctly on subsequent runs. The difficulty here is that this is part of our initial configuration process. We're running Puppet out of kickstart and want the network configuration to be in place before the first reboot. It sounds like the only workable solution is to simply run Puppet twice during the initial system configuration, which will ensure that the necessary packages are in place. • Trouble using gitweb with nginx

  I have a git repository in a directory inside of /home/raynes/pubgit/. I'm trying to use gitweb to provide a web interface to it. I use nginx as my web server for everything else, so I don't really want to have to use another just for this. I'm mostly following this guide: http://michalbugno.pl/en/blog/gitweb-nginx, which is the only guide I can find via google and is really recent. fcgiwrap apparently isn't in Lucid Lynx's repositories, so I installed it manually. I spawn instances via spawn-fcgi: spawn-fcgi -f /usr/local/sbin/fcgiwrap -a 127.0.0.1 -p 9001 That's all good. • Rsync over ssh: "ERROR: module is read only" suddenly appeared

  I've used from some time rsync/ssh to backup my shared host contents to my personal Synology NAS (212j for that matter), and it worked quite well. For information, I use a password-less ssh connection. 3 days ago, I updated my NAS software and since (or at least I believe it's since that), the backup won't work anymore. I get the following error on the host: rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes to socket [sender]: Broken pipe (32) ERROR: module is read only ..which I do not understand. beside that nothing changed that I know of in both source and destination that can be related to rsync or ssh, I did check a few things and all seems to be alright: I can still connect through ssh from the host to my NAS with the good user, so ssh stuff like keys haven't changed. I also have the correct file permissions on the NAS (I checked, and also tried to create files, directories, .. with the user used by rsync through ssh). I read here and there that the error means that I have to ensure that my rsyncd.conf have the right read only = no in it, but as far as I know, I never used rsyncd as well as I never configured anything for it and until now it worked like a charm.. I use the following command to do the backup: rsync -ab --recursive \ --files-from="$FILES_FROM" \ --backup-dir=backup_$SUFFIX \ --delete \ --filter='protect backup_*' \ $WDIRECTORY/ \ remote_backup:$REMOTE_BACKUP/ So I'm stuck and really can't figure out what happened. Edit: As suggested in comments, I also tried passing commands to ssh (but not from inside a ssh session), that worked as expected, and also tried a single rsync command, which didnt worked, failing just like the complete backup command. • How to keep group-writeable shares on Samba with OSX clients?

  I have a FreeNAS server on a network with OSX and Windows clients. When the OSX clients interact with SMB/CIFS shares on the server, they are causing permission problems for all other clients. Update: I can no longer verify any answers because we abandoned the project, but feel free to post any help for future visitors. The details of this behavior seem to also be dependent on the version of OSX the client is running. For this question, let's assume a client running 10.8.2. When I mount the CIFS share on an OSX client and create a new directory on it, the directory will be created with drwxr-x-rx permissions. This is undesirable because it will not allow anyone but me to write to the directory. There are other users in my group which should have write permissions as well. This behavior happens even though the following settings are present in smb.conf on the server: [global] create mask= 0666 directory mask= 0777 [share] force directory mode= 0775 force create mode= 0660 I was under the impression that these settings should make sure that directories are at least created with rwxrwxr-x permissions. But, I guess, that doesn't stop the client from changing the permissions after creating the directory. When I create a folder on the same share from a Windows client, the new folder will have the desired access permissions (rwxrwxrwx), so I'm currently assuming that the problem lies with the OSX client. I guess this wouldn't be such an issue if you could easily change the permissions of the directories you've created, but you can't. When opening the directory info in Finder, I get the old "You have custom access" notice with no ability to make any changes. I'm assuming that this is caused because we're using Windows ACLs on the share, but that's just a wild guess. Changing the write permissions for the group through the terminal works fine, but this is unpractical for the deployment and unreasonable to expect from anyone to do. • Why can't I connect to remote Microsoft SQL Server through SSH tunnel?

  I have at home a D-Link DIR-615 C1 router with DD-WRT. I set up the SSH server on the router, and log on through an SSH2-RSA passphrase-protected key. That router is the gateway between the local network and the internet. One of the computers on that network has Microsoft SQL Server 2008 installed, with TCP/IP protocol enabled through port 1433. I've set up port forwarding on the router, so that remote connections are possible and are, in fact, working (some developers log on remotely without problems). I am part of another network, that has internet access through a proxy server, which only has ports 80 and 443 opened. I can't connect to that MSSQL server on that remote server because 1433 port is closed on this network. I connected (using Putty) through 443 port to my router's SSH server, and set up 2 tunnels. One is for RDP (3389), and it's working. The other is for 1433 port, to connect to the server. I can't connect through the SSH tunnel to the MS SQL Server, neither through telnet, or through GUI clients. Am I missing something? Additional details: on connect, I get this error from SQL Server Management Studio: TITLE: Connect to Server Cannot connect to localhost:14330. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3) For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=3&LinkId=20476 BUTTONS: OK The tunnel is configured like this: L14330 192.168.0.103:1433 192.168.0.103 is the permanent address of the SQL Server on the LAN. I also successfully forwarded TCP traffic of 3389 port to that IP, so tunneling is working to that IP address. When connecting without tunnel, through Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, using the same method the connection establishes. Too bad my proxy doesn't allow 1433 port traffic, I wouldn't have this headache.

• Why can't I connect to remote Microsoft SQL Server through SSH tunnel?

  I have at home a D-Link DIR-615 C1 router with DD-WRT. I set up the SSH server on the router, and log on through an SSH2-RSA passphrase-protected key. That router is the gateway between the local network and the internet. One of the computers on that network has Microsoft SQL Server 2008 installed, with TCP/IP protocol enabled through port 1433. I've set up port forwarding on the router, so that remote connections are possible and are, in fact, working (some developers log on remotely without problems). I am part of another network, that has internet access through a proxy server, which only has ports 80 and 443 opened. I can't connect to that MSSQL server on that remote server because 1433 port is closed on this network. I connected (using Putty) through 443 port to my router's SSH server, and set up 2 tunnels. One is for RDP (3389), and it's working. The other is for 1433 port, to connect to the server. I can't connect through the SSH tunnel to the MS SQL Server, neither through telnet, or through GUI clients. Am I missing something? Additional details: on connect, I get this error from SQL Server Management Studio: TITLE: Connect to Server Cannot connect to localhost:14330. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. When connecting without tunnel, through Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, using the same method the connection establishes. Too bad my proxy doesn't allow 1433 port traffic, I wouldn't have this headache.

• Seeking past end of file causes Apache hang, and it never restarts.

  I've actually solved my problem with a better script, but I'm still left wondering why Apache2 hung completely - this is an out-of-the-box ISPCONFIG 3.03 install, everything bang up to date, running perfectly. Until... I did this for various logs, since it's a nice easy window on what's occurring (in a protect dir, of course!). One day, the logs having grown large an me having sorted all my cron, scripting and mail queue errors, I thought I was time to start afresh. updated, rebooted, archived and deleted the logs. When I ran my script a couple of hours later, it hung. And hung. 8 minutes I waited. Chrome timed the page out, of course, but the server never came back to life. htop showed /usr/sbin/apache2 -k restart using 100% CPU. Never came back until I did a service apache2 restart. Ran fine, as soon as I hit that logfile again...dead. So, I worked out it was the logfile script, and I worked out that seeking beyond the end of the file wasn't good, and I found a better script http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.fseek.php#90450 But what I'm left wondering is... why didn't something restart or kill the process? How was one hanging page able to bring down the whole server? It's running suphp. I say "out of the box", I've tweaked mysql and apache to fork and reserve sensible amounts of processes for the 512Mb RAM the VPS has, and it'll handle multiple refreshes of large pages, and hadn't hung before. Any ideas how I'd avoid this? Google isn't my friend in this instance beyond the reccs. above about number of processes vs RAM available.

• TabHost disappears after locking the phone and reopening it:

  I have a weird issue with my TabHost in my FragmentActivity that contains a ViewPager. The problem is that when I close my phone (press the power button) while I use my application, and then I turn back the phone and my application gets reopened, at this point my TabHost is missing. So the closing of my phone is causes the TabHost to disappear.   Someone has, for the second time, appended a chunk of javascript to a site I help run. This javascript hijacks Google adsense, inserting their own account number, and sticking ads all over. The code is always appended, always in one specific directory (one used by a third party ad program), affects a number of files in a number of directories inside this one ad dir (20 or so) and is inserted at roughly the same overnight time. The adsense account belongs to a Chinese website (located in a town not an hour from where I will be in China next month. Maybe I should go bust heads... kidding, sort of), btw... here is the info on the site: http://serversiders.com/fhr.com.cn So, how could they append text to these files? Is it related to the permissions set on the files (ranging from 755 to 644)? To the webserver user (it's on MediaTemple so it should be secure, yes?)? I mean, if you have a file that has permissions set to 777 I still can't just add code to it at will... how might they be doing this? • Dlink search is hijacking my browser

  For months now "DLink search" has been hijacking my search engines. I use google chrome, and I have organized my search engines in the handy dandy "manage search engines" tool about a TRILLION times. It never even says D-link is hacking my search engines. It does not show up! I have read many posts on this forum and others saying that to fix this problem from internet explorer: Setup, internet options, yadayada, magical fairies, and you are solved, but my browser is google chrome! How am I supposed to do this from there! I do not know how to re-setup my Dlink router, which is the cause of the problem! HOW? In those posts with the magical fairies fixing it, HUNDREDS responded saying, "yep, those fairies definitely fixed it right. :)" These people were so satisfied. IT WORKED FOR THEM, WHY NOT ME. I look at it and go ":(" because it does not help me. There are no options for anything to do with this in GOOGLE chrome. PLEASE EXPLAIN and HELP. I see no "SETUP" option, no "Internet Options" button, no anything. BTW the exact posts are these: "Uncheck Advanced DNS in the router internet setup. This will take care of it. I had this problem with my DLink router before." "I had this issue with my DIR-655 and unchecking the Advanced DNS setting in Setup - Internet - Manual Internet Connection Setup fixed it." • How to allow unprivileged apache/PHP to do a root task (CentOS)

  I am setting up a sort of personal dropbox for our customers on a CentOS 6.3 machine. The server will be accessible thru SFTP and a proprietary http service base on PHP. This machine will be in our DMZ so it has to be secure. Because of this I have apache running as an unprivileged user, hardened the security on apache, the OS, PHP, applied a lot of filtering in iptables and applied some restrictive TCP Wrappers. Now you might have suspected this one was coming, SELinux is also set to enforcing. I'm setting up PAM to use MySQL so my users in the web application can login. These users will all be in a group that can use SSH only for SFTP and users will be chrooted to their own 'home' folder. To allow this SELinux wants the folders to have the user_home_t tag. Also the parent directory needs to be writable by root only. If these restrictions are not met SELinux will kill the SSH pipe immediately. The files that need to be accessible thru both http and SFTP so I have made a SELinux module to allow Apache to search/attr/read/write etc. to directories with the user_home_dir_t tag. As sftp users are stored in MySQL I want to setup their home dirs upon user creation. This is a problem since Apache has no write access to the /home dir, it's only writable by root since it's required to keep SELinux and OpenSSH happy. Basically I need to let Apache do only a few tasks as root and only within /home. So I need to somehow elevate the privileges temporarily or let root do these tasks for apache instead. What I need to have apache do with root privileges is the following. mkdir /home/userdir/ mkdir /home/userdir/userdir chmod -R 0755 /home/userdir umask 011 /home/userdir/userdir chcon -R -t user_home_t /home/userdir chown -R user:sftp_admin /home/userdir/userdir chmod 2770 /home/userdir/userdir This would create a home for the user, now I have an idea that might work, cron. That would mean the server needs to check for users that have no home every minute, then when creating users the interface would freeze for an average of 30 seconds before the account creation can be confirmed which I do not prefer. Does anybody know if something can be done with sudoers? Or any other idea's are welcome... Thanks for your time!

Even the ls -i. I couldn't find anymore options, so before reformatting or repairing my filesystem (fsck might help) I thought maybe there is something I missed. I now have the inode, but the normal find -inum inode -exec rm '{}' \; doesn't work. I think I have to use the clri now.
