  • Can't access my accelerated hard disk from msdos after installing linux on ssd cache

    I mistakenly installed Linux Mint on my ssd (forgot my PC actually came with one), when it detected a ~31GiB disk that it wanted to install to, I was a bit confused since I had brought out 30Gb in my primary disk for it, but I clicked continue. After installation, I tried to boot back into my Windows and it brought out some Intel Raid Disk Utility stuff saying I should disable acceleration on a disk something couldn't be found, I canceled it but whatever I tried, recovery tools, setups etc, I couldn't just access the drive which was apparently using the SSD as cache. Since then I've been stuck. I tried setting the 'raid' flag to the disk from 'gParted', still I couldn't. I tried the diskraid utility from windows recover disk, it said it couldn't detect any raid, diskpart sees the partition but doesn't see the volume, when I remove the raid flag, it sees the volume as one of raw type, and I can't access anything. I can however mount the drive from terminal in Mint and access my files, but I don't have any backup media at the moment so I can do a factory re-install. Please how do I go about solving the issue, precisely I would like to know how to boot into the drive again. Thanks!

  • Two internet connections coming in, one Sonicwall Tz170 (enhanced os), and slow speed

    I work a lot from my home office and being in general a tad paranoid I have cable and DSL pipes coming into my house. I have used an Ebay bought Sonicwall Tz170 with the enhanced OS for a good while. I believe it does failover and has a feature for doing round robin on which connection is used. I get the impression from using it that I might not be getting the most out of this setup. Is it possible/likely that my router could be a cause of the slowdown? Are there more appropriate choices?

  • Should I keep my swap file on an SSD drive?

    I'm considering getting an SSD drive to run as the primary OS partition. As I understand, this should provide a substantial improvement in performance. My question is this: Should I leave the swap file on that drive? The swap partition will be largely random seeks and so should benefit from the speed. On the other hand, it will be constantly written to which will wear out the drive faster.

  • Why do strace/truss sometimes 'fix' stuck processes?

    Sometimes you have a stuck process that's been stuck for a while, and as soon as you go to poke at it with strace/truss just to see what's going on, it gets magically unstuck and continues to run! So from merely 'observing' these programs have some impact in the running of the stuck programs .. what's happening here? Did strace (I guess via ptrace(2)?) send a signal, causing the program to cease blocking, or such? I've seen this several times -- most recently on Linux RHEL 4 (and a Perl script mucking with processes and doing some network IO in that case), but in a few other contexts as well. Unfortunately, I can't reproduce this, as it times to happen ... in times of crisis. But my curiosity remains. :-) Any elucidation appreciated.

    Each time it's the same thing, I find one, then I forget the name of it the next time I want to "dive" into such things. I'm looking for a good fractal "visualizer". The kind in which you just select a well-known fractal model (or variations on it), and in which you can then "dive" into, just zooming in or out smoothly, for the cheer pleasure of losing yourself in it. I'm looking for an executable, preferably for Windows, but any OS accepted. Keep to one program per answer (and one answer per program), as this is community wiki.

  • What's the difference between Host and HostName in SSH Config?

    The man page says this: Host Host Restricts the following declarations (up to the next Host keyword) to be only for those hosts that match one of the patterns given after the keyword. If more than one pattern is provided, they should be separated by whitespace. A single `*' as a pattern can be used to provide global defaults for all hosts. The host is the hostname argument given on the command line (i.e. the name is not converted to a canonicalized host name before matching). A pattern entry may be negated by prefixing it with an exclamation mark (`!'). If a negated entry is matched, then the Host entry is ignored, regardless of whether any other patterns on the line match. Negated matches are therefore useful to provide exceptions for wildcard matches. See PATTERNS for more information on patterns. HostName HostName Specifies the real host name to log into. This can be used to specify nicknames or abbreviations for hosts. If the hostname contains the character sequence `%h', then this will be replaced with the host name specified on the command line (this is useful for manipulating unqualified names). The default is the name given on the com- mand line. Numeric IP addresses are also permitted (both on the command line and in HostName specifications).   • Diverting sound output of MCE to SPDIF

    I have an ASUS SupremeFX II audio card (which in fact is an onboard audio riser slot) with the default drivers that are pre-installed by Windows 7 x64 for this card. I am able to manually switch between analog output and SPDIF output by the means of control panel (or external utilities like STADS), a change that affects all applications. The problem is that by doing that every time I am about to launch Windows Media Center, except that it's not that elegant, also makes all other Windows application's sounds to pass through SPDIF too, bypassing analog output completely, blending with what I am watching at Windows Media Center. Is there a way to make SPDIF as the default playback device for Windows Media Center? I know other programs that have a setting like that (foobar2000 for example) working like charm, allowing me to even have different outputs working at the same time (tested with my current card successfully). But when comes to Windows Media Center... it just use what the default playback device is all the time. The only setting that I know of, is under: Settings General Windows Media Center Setup Set Up Your Speakers and what it does is to just change the default playback device for entire system.   • Outlook 2003: How to print embedded images in e-mails?

    My boss has been trying to print his e-mails with embedded images, but the images don't print. All we get is a placeholder space where the image should be. Ideally, we'd like to have an option to control whether images get printed or not. I Googled this already and the one solution I found, trying to print the e-mail from the separate window using the print icon, did not work. Edit: also tried the solution here without success. I had him forward a sample e-mail to me, and I printed it fine in my Outlook (same version).

  • No digital audio output with Asus Xonar DG

    I've purchased an Asus Xonar DG as replacement for faulty onboard audio in a Medion 8822 as it has an optical output which is all I really need to feed my HTPC. I uninstalled the previous drivers/devices, switched the PC off, inserted the Asus card, powered up, disabled the onboard audio in the BIOS, then installed the driver that came on the CD (same version as on Asus' website as of today) and everything went perfectly - no errors. I set the audio devices up in Windows and in the Asus utility (SPDIF enabled, 6-ch audio) as I would expect to see them work, but the only thing is I have no digital audio from test tones within Windows/the Asus utility, PCM audio or Dolby Digital from DVD. Analogue audio is fine. I've uninstalled things and reinstalled a couple of times now, as well as trying almost all combinations of analogue/digital outputs but can't get it sorted. Does anyone have any tips on how to get this working? This card has just been released so there isn't much out there to go on. Notes: The light on the toslink port is lit. OS is Vista 32-bit SP2 and all up to date, pretty much a fresh install with almost no 3rd party applications installed This page seems to suggest that a digital output device in Windows is not needed with Xonar cards as it was with the previous Realtek so I have it set to Analog. The only other output device is S/PDIF pass-thru

  • Computer won't boot from a bootable DVD

    My friend gave me his old computer that used to have WinXP on it. I'm trying to load Win7 on it and I thought there was something wrong because it wouldn't boot off a bootable disc, even though I setup the BIOS boot settings properly (I've done this sort of thing a million times). However, this closely related post helped me realize that I can boot off a bootable CD (WinXP), just not a DVD (Win7) Computer won’t boot from CD/DVD drive That might be the answer to my question, however, this motherboard is still pretty current technology. It's a good quality Gigabyte board, and judging from this product page, it came out in 2004. If I can't figure out a solution to my DVD boot problem, I'll have to try something like this: Boot and Install Windows from a USB thumb drive I guess it's possible that this motherboard doesn't allow booting from a DVD, but I still think that I might be missing something. It wouldn't be the DVD rom drive would it? I did try another drive and had the same results. However, I didn't try booting a DVD in the computer that the other test drive came out of, I'll do that later today. Any other advice? Thanks.

  • Acer Aspire 3820TG video card driver issue for Windows 8 Pro

    The model for Acer laptop is ATI mobility Radeon 5650. I am using Windows 8 Pro from MSDN. It was working fine until two days ago when Microsoft pushes an update. After the update, my video card stops working and I only see black screen after loading splash screen. I can go in Safe Mode. I tried to install driver from AMD website but it failed with error message "load detection driver failed". Anyone else have the same issue? Any idea how to solve this? I need to go in Win8 for my latest development.

I tried searching on it (found codehead and fedoraforum) and came to know that it is a known bug, but couldn't find any solution to it. Do you know any solution to this?     I'm a new VS user. I've received some sample C++ projects working with a 3rd party API. They were saved in VS2012 format, but I have VS 2013. After conversion I find that there is an API specific macro defined in the project properties in the "Linker|General|Additional Library Directories" category. If I click on 'edit' I can replace the macro with an actual path, but how do I establish what the macro points to? In other words, how does one create a macro usable in multiple projects?

  • How to relink user folders in Windows 7

    The short story: Win7 lost track of my user folders location (desktop, my documents, my pictures etc...). They now reside on a different partition. How can I relink these folders? The long story: The way I partition my drives is: C: - SSD drive for Windows and Program Files D: - A large regular hard drive for all my user data The first thing I do after a fresh Win7 install is move my user folders to D:, by right clicking on these folders under C:\users\username\, choosing the Location tab and clicking on Move. I've just completed encryption of D: using TrueCrypt. It shows a lot of warnings before the encryption process, but (hrrmm...) it does not mention the fact that after encryption the data is located on a new drive letter, say E: This broke Win7's links to my special user folders. How can I relink these folders?
