  • Running DNS locally for home network

    I have a small home network that just got larger ( New roommate, My existing roommate got a laptop (on top of her computer)j, my friends coming over with laptop, etc ). I'd like to run a local DNS server for lookups of my local network stuff (fileserver.local, windowsTV.local, machineA.local, machineB.local, appletv.local). I used to have a business line with a static IP, and run bind/named internally. However, now, I have a normal account. My ISP's DNS servers are constantly changing (for whatever reasons my ISP doesn't like to keep the same IP range for long). I need my local DNS to be automatically updated to use my ISP's DNS for external traffic, but be able to maintain an internal DNS server (getting to update the hosts file is being a hassle with every new machine on top of rebuilding existing machines with win7 or Ubuntu 9.04). Additionally, My ISP's DNS servers often crash or become unresponsive. Are there any open DNS servers that are reliable (i don't want to reconfig every day) that I could use as my primary, then if those fail, then use my ISP's? UPDATE: Also looking for each workstation to be able to use dhcp to connect, but instead of getting ISP dns servers, getting my internal one.... Thanks

    I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and I want to install turnkey linux's LAMP server on my machine to test out my code. I installed Turnkey LAMP via VirtualBox and it seems to be working because I can access the http://localhost. My question is: How do I manipulate files via VirtualBox? For example, if I had installed LAMP on my machine (not on a virtual machine), I could easily add/edit/delete files in the var/WWW folder. Where is the equivalent of "WWW" folder on Virtualbox and how can I interface with it? Thanks,

  • How do I make an exe into a service on Windows?

    I recently made an application that has multiple parts. One of the parts is a networking tool - it always starts with the OS, and it never displays any sort of message. It does, however, start an incredibly irritating console, which is impossible to get rid of without closing the program itself (please just accept this one as given). I have decided to work around this problem by starting the program (it's a *.exe) as a service, thus stopping it from showing up at all. As the application will be distributed to various computers (hence the need for a networking tool in the first place). I need a way to make this program install as a service (so, I don't really want answers that tell me to go through a series of menus on the Control Panel or download a 3rd-party application that has to stay on whichever computer the service will run on). How can I do this?

  • How to find out which program a default beep is coming from in Windows 7?

    There's a "default beep" (as defined in System Sounds) that emanates from my computer every so often. It kind of goes like this (where each number is a "default beep" sound): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. So there's a distinct pattern to it. I thought I had this figured out a way to figure out what was happening by going to Control Panel-Ease of Access-Ease of Access Center-Replace sounds with visual cues But that just isn't the case. Whichever window I click on, that one displays the visual queue when this happens. It's driving me crazy, and I can't figure out which program is causing this. Update: it appears to only happen on one user profile on the computer...does that help? Update 2: Discovered that this sound was coming from a utility on my laptop called ASUS NB Probe; I'm certain that it is emanating from this program because the error message displayed by it changes in sync with the sound playing. Apparently the S.M.A.R.T. feature of my hard drive was reporting an issue. It displays the issue for a brief second and then makes it disappear, I'll have to keep watching it to see what it says, but I believe is says something about a read. I have an external hdd connected with eSATA to a container of sorts (BlacX) that you can plug two hdds into. I have one hdd attached and it's a Western Digital WD1001FALS - 00E8B0 Thanks again! Now I'm off to go around the Internet and report on this...since I posted it so many places!

  • Using Ctrl-Tab to switch between tabs in Mac Terminal.app

    How can I make Ctrl-Tab and Ctrl-Shift-Tab switch between tabs in Terminal.app on a Mac (OS 10.4 and 10.5 specifically)? This is how I switch tabs in Firefox and Aquamacs, and Command-Shift-[ and Command-Shift-] is too awkward to me. I am aware of this related question: .../unable-to-switch-a-tab-efficiently-in-macs-terminal* And hence the Keyboard Shortcuts section of the System Preferences, but the dialog box for Keyboard Shortcuts doesn't seem to accept Ctrl-Tab in the Keyboard Shortcut field. Is there a special keyboard sequence for inputting tabs (with modifiers) into a dialog box field on a Mac? Is there any other method that would allow me to customize Terminal.app in the way I desire? Not really a programming question, but I think the answer would be useful to other folks that program on Macs and would like to have some consistency between interfaces of different applications.     There are two configurations of the Dell Studio 14 (1458) which I'm looking at: Config 1: Core i7-720QM @ 1.6 GHz; ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5450 1GB; 4gb DDR3 RAM @ 1066 MHz; 500 GB SATA HDD @ 7200 RPM; Price: $999 Config 2: Core i5-430M; ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530 512MB; 4GB DDR3 RAM @ 1066 MHz; 500 GV SATA HDD @ 7200 RPM; Price: $874 What I want to know is, would config 1 still be able to do decent gaming (maybe some Starcraft II), and is there a great performance difference between the i5 and i7 processors? Is the $130 extra worth it for the i7 and better graphics card? I do more than just basic computing. I plan on getting into web design (specifically using Photoshop and Dreamweaver), and I wish to do gaming. I know Conifg 1 is the better value, but I want to be sure that the $130 more is truly worth it. I dont have too much money and want to spend wisely as possible, yet I am a computer geek and plan on doing a lot more than the average user.

  • Is it possible to use Logmein to connect to a sleeping (Mac) computer on a wireless network?

    I'm using logmein to access my Mac. So I have the local logmein app running on my MacBook Pro, which is on my home wireless network. I access it either from the website (www.logmein.com) or the Logmein Ignition Apps on the iphone or ipad. My problem is that I have to set my MacBook Pro to not sleep at all when plugged in to make this a practical solution, because logmein cant seem to wake it up. I did change the settings in System Preferences to allow "Wake from Lan", but it seems like this won't work with a a Wifi connection. Am I missing anything? Assuming I'm not, is it bad for my computer to basically leave it running and not asleep most of the time?

    I just bought a 1.5T HDD and a disk enclosure. I connected this disk to my laptop via the provided USB cable. I then used the following command: rsync -r -t -v --progress --delete -c -l -z / /media/C4E41A11E41A0678/Moonface_BKP/ I ran this for a long (long long) time when i noticed that what had been backed up to the HDD began to be backed up. In other words, when i ran the command, it created a /media directory and a C4... directory below that and kept recursively backing up this directory (since, I suppose, I was backing up the hard drive itself, too). So...what's the proper way to use rsync?

  • What does a status of "Backup" mean for Windows 7 local user profiles?

    Summary: Upon logging on to Windows 7 RTM I get a message that my profile can't be loaded and a temporary user profile is created. I logged off and back on as Administrator. The user profiles dialog shows my user profile with a Type of "Local" and a Status of "Backup" rather than "Local" which it should be. How can I change this to make my user profile accessible? The long story: My PC has a single hard drive partitioned into a C: and a D:. I'd moved my user profile directory (c:\Users) to d:\Users, removed c:\Users and then used mklink.exe to create a directory symbolic link c:\Users -- d:\Users. Worked like a charm since I did it. Today, I make a System Restore Point for drives C: and D:. Next, I dismounted D: and used the Disk Management tool to remove the "D:" drive letter from the D volume. (My plan was to reboot and then redirect the symbolic link.) Upon reboot, I got the user profile error described above. Finally, I restored the System Restore Points that I'd created for both drives and then rebooted again. Same issue.

    I was having windows 7 installed on my laptop, yesterday I tried to install Open Suse operating system. During its installation I chose a NTFS partition and formatted it to ext4 filesystem. During installation an error came that mount point cannot be created on this partition and I aborted the installation. They on reboot a message came BootMgr is missing. I then reinstalled the windows but on complete installation when setup rebooted the system then a blank screen came with a cursor blinking. I went through many forums and learnt may startup repairs and commands but it continues to hang up at a blank screen with cursor blinking. Reinstalling new windows 7 is also not doing any effect. I urgently need to repair my laptop for very important work. Please Help

    Possible Duplicate: How to move the page file to another physical disk location Windows 7 I was given temporarily a PC, running Windows 7 Ultimate. The problem is it's hard drive is full, there are like 250 MB free. The swap file is set to none. It has 4 GB RAM. When I load a few tabs in Chrome or IE and start a game it runs out of memory. I already emptied Recycle Bin, %temp%, etc. Deleting/moving user files or adding RAM is not an option. Now I have a USB 3 7200 RPM drive, it's connected to a USB 3 port and is really fast. Is there a way to create a swap file on that drive?

  • scp No such file or directory

    I've a confusing question for which superuser doesn't seem to have a good answer, and neither google. I'm trying to scp a file from a remote server to my local machine. The command is this scp user@server:/path/to/source/file.gz /path/to/destination The error I get is: scp: /path/to/source/file.gz: No such file or directory user is my username on the server. The command syntax appears fine to me. ssh works fine and I can cd to the file and it doesn't seem to be an access control issue? Thanks; Edit: Thank you John. I spotted the issue. ls returned this: -r--r--r-- 1 nobody users 168967171 Mar 10 2009 /path/to/source/file.gz So, the file was on a read-only file system and user is able to read it but not scp. I just copied the file to a different directory and chown it and worked fine. It would be good if someone can explain why this is the case though.

  • Sharepoint 2010 site access denied for Active Dirtectory group member

    I created a blank site in Sharepoint 2010 and in Site Actions-->Permissions I removed all the users and added an Active directory group which has me as member and few others. After this I logged in as myself and it does not show that Portal on Left navigation. If I try to browse to that portal as myself it says "access denied"? I don't know where I am wrong.   • Formatted mac external hard drive loaded on pc

    I have an issue where it appears that an external hard drive which had been formatted on a mac system was loaded as a drive in Windows. Windows is obviously unable to read the data and now the drive won't mount in the mac. It appears that Windows overwrote something concerning the drive's information on what filesystems and types it has on it. Mac diskutility is unable to repair the drive and the partition is showing up in the utility as a FAT32. Using an applexsoft utility, I am able to verify the data is still on this drive, but I'd rather not spend $100 to save these files (its not my hard drive anyways). Is there a way I can use some UNIX commands to find out the partition information on the drive, back the raw data up on it, then restore the data back onto the drive after re-formatting it again?

  • Dual pane file manager for Mac OS

    Is there a good customizable dual-pane file manager for Mac like Total Commander / Far Manager in Windows, or like Krusader / Midnight Commander in Linux? I used to work on Windows for quite a while and mostly used Far Manager and sometimes Total Commander, then I switched to Ubuntu Linux and used Krusader, now I switched to Mac OS (Snow Leopard) and I'm having a hard time trying to find a good file manager... Many of the existing applications are trying to replace the Finder with "multimedia capabilities nobody cares about in file manager - IMHO" (Path Finder, ForkLift), some of them are almost good dual-pane file managers (couldn't remember examples), but none of them worked for me mostly because of one reason: I couldn't integrate my file/folder comparison utility (Araxis Merge for Mac) with them... The way it worked for me in Windows and Linux is that I was setting the cursor on one file in the left pane, then setting the right-pane cursor on another file in right pane, then I pressed a hotkey that launched Araxis Merge with those to files/folders comparison results. It was very easy to set up in Far Manager (Windows) and Krusader (Linux, actually in Linux I used "Meld" instead of Araxis Merge...) The tool I'm looking for doesn't necessarily has to be free... This behavior is very similar to Apple + . when using Tweetie to show/hide the app in OS X.   • Connecting a network drive only when the VPN is connected?

    I have a thumb drive that I want to be able to connect to the same place over the network at one location as it is locally. Sometimes I leave it at the other location, but usually if I'm going to back it up, I back it up locally for network traffic. Is there a way to automatically connect the thumb drive when I connect to the VPN? (Always to the same drive letter...and obviously skip connecting it if it's already plugged in locally and the VPN is connected...) I'm using a Cisco VPN Client 5.x

    My work setup relies on old Windows XP. Now, when Windows XP isn't supported by new hardware, it's getting harder and harder to buy a notebook on which Windows XP can run natively with all essential hardware (wireless cards, graphics, sound etc). Since I don't expect my personal setup to turn away from Windows XP any time soon, I'm investigating the following trick: why not buy any decent hardware which Linux can fully utilize, and use it as a virtual host for a guest session with e.g. Windows XP. I like using hibernation, so I prefer this Linux to be as thin as possible, only enough to support VirtualBox, KVM or any other virtualization software. Question: Are there any "standard" ways to do this, like Linux distributions aimed specifically on being light virtualization host?

  • Allowing Remote Connection in IIS on Windows 7

    I'm trying to give access to a website in IIS on my Win 7 machine to another person on my network. He's unable to access it. I was wondering if perhaps it was because IIS isn't configured to allow remote connections (I seem to remember having to do this sort of thing on Win XP). I've hunted around in IIS and googled but am not finding a way to configure remote connections on Win 7. Some of the answers I've found seem to refer to Win Server 2008 and talk about a management service in IIS Manager, but it doesn't appear to be present on my machine.

  • Thunderbird alerts when expected email does not arrive

    I am on Ubuntu 12.04 using Thunderbird as email client. Both are up to date in terms of updates. I have bunch of nightly jobs that do the work and send a status mail. It gets tedious if you keep getting same/similar mails every day so I ended up writing a mail filter rule which causes emails to end up in their respective folders automatically. If things are going ok, I really don't need to read emails. Failure emails are sent to different alias - if the job runs. We recently discovered that one of the job had not run for few days as someone accidentally disabled it. In order to avoid such problems in future, I would like to setup thunderbird in such a way that if I don't get email from given address within given duration, it should alert me. My dream solution is to set up frequency - some jobs do run every 4 hours. Is this possible? Can I setup Thunderbird (preferred) or other email client for reminding me when expected email does not show up. Based on comments and answer I received, here are the reasons why I would like to use Thunderbird. We are already using Thunderbird. It has calender support via plugin, so I suppose someone is already watching time to remind us about the event. May be this another type of event. Additional job is one more failure point, may complicate life if it has to monitor multiple hosts. Additional tools - same thing, one more failure point. Thunderbird can be run across all the platforms we are using - Windows and Ubuntu. It sort of becomes platform independent solution.
