  • Toshiba Satellite L630 broken after bios update

    I have Toshiba Satellite L630, which has been broken. It had no more OS installed in it. All the disk partition were cleared into one single empty unformatted partition. So I begin to install windows XP on this laptop. Apparently, win XP's driver support for this laptop is very limited. So I have to find almost all important driver (display, sound, etherned, wireless etc) on the net and install it manually one by one. So I start googling, and I got some driver download page from several Toshiba's website (the global version, the europe, asia, etc). Pretty hard to find the exact drivers, but I managed to find pretty good drivers. It's all works quite fine, although still have a few glitches. But everything turned into a big mess when I downloaded the "BIOS Update", which is also listed on Toshiba's official driver directory site. When I installed it, it show a big red warning sign telling me not to do anything while flashing the BIOS . I follow that instruction prudently. The process was finished, and that update BIOS software (it is InsydeH2O BIOS) told me that the BIOS has been succesfully updated and the computer need to restart. So I restart the computer. This is where the problem appear. I can no longer boot to my laptop. The booting process seems to be able to enter windows for a moment (it shows the windows XP loading screen), and then suddenly it just got that hateful blue screen and then instantiy restarts the machine. It goes on a loop. Boot bios - enter XP - blue screen - restart. I can't even try to reinstall my win XP again. Evertime the machine tries to boot to win XP CD, it got the same blue screen as I gets when loading from HDD. Many google search results said that I should open the laptop cover and try to clear CMOS with some kind of jumper or something. Or to unplug/re-plug the CMOS battery. Do I really need to do that? Is there anyway I could do without disassembling my laptop? I read some tricks about booting from USB device but I can't get the exat tools that I need to do that thing...   • Windows 7 Loading Very Slow

    Hi guys, I've had a problem that only started to occur yesterday. When I boot into Windows 7 and log on to my user account, the computer gets very laggy and slow for at least 5 minutes. Icons take ages to load, and everything is rendered unclickable. This happens for about five minutes after which everything goes back to normal. I tried restarting a few times to see if this is a recurring problem, and it is. I ran a full system scan with Microsoft Security Essentials and found nothing wrong, and I also defragmented the disk to increase performance. However, the problem still exists. Edit: For the past day, I've been trying to install Ubuntu on the same laptop. When installing it on a partition didn't work, I decided to use Wubi. Could this somehow be the problem? Also, my hard drive gets hot a lot, so could the heat be affecting the hard drive and maybe making it defective? Any help on this issue would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

I think about it a lot and still don't know what is correct answerer nor what answer my future employer expects. My choice would be something like: What part of Internet? (but more polite). For example I could ask for opening web page that works on my PC. Please give only serious answers. If You want BOFH or "The website is down" style answers I can create separate question for that.

  • Using Ctrl-Tab to switch between tabs in Mac Terminal.app

    How can I make Ctrl-Tab and Ctrl-Shift-Tab switch between tabs in Terminal.app on a Mac (OS 10.4 and 10.5 specifically)? This is how I switch tabs in Firefox and Aquamacs, and Command-Shift-[ and Command-Shift-] is too awkward to me. I am aware of this related question: .../unable-to-switch-a-tab-efficiently-in-macs-terminal* And hence the Keyboard Shortcuts section of the System Preferences, but the dialog box for Keyboard Shortcuts doesn't seem to accept Ctrl-Tab in the Keyboard Shortcut field. Is there a special keyboard sequence for inputting tabs (with modifiers) into a dialog box field on a Mac? Is there any other method that would allow me to customize Terminal.app in the way I desire? Not really a programming question, but I think the answer would be useful to other folks that program on Macs and would like to have some consistency between interfaces of different applications.   • Hard Disk Space Changes

    I am currently running on Windows 7 x64, and have observe that my hard disk space is acting a little weird. Currently, my harddisk has 3 partitions, C:, D:, E:. Previously, before I delete a huge folder (30gb of data) from my D: drive, my C: drive has about 1gb left, while my E: drive has about 5 gb left. After deleting the 30gb of data (from D: drive), my space in D: drive has been recovered (but not sure if it's fully recovered), my C: drive which only had about 1gb left increased to 3. While my E: drive which had 5gb left dropped to 1. I was wondering if it has something to do with the fragmentations and whatsoever I always hear about in harddisk. Has anyone encountered similar issues or have an explanation to why it could be happening?

  • Shared IMAP Folders in GMail

    Our office is using Google Apps for Domains for our email. Our customer support guys use IMAP clients (such as Thunderbird and Outlook) to check both their individual email addresses and a "collective" support email address. On the support account, there are several folders for organizing email threads by client. When a user gets a support-related email (either to the support email or their individual email address) they file away the email in one of thse shared folders. Many of us greatly prefer the Gmail interface (with Folders4Gmail enabled on the Better Gmail 2 add-on for Firefox, for label-to-folder support) over Thunderbird or Outlook. However, there is no way to "share" email threads, complete with labels, between accounts. The desired end result is that a user logs into their individual account and can see both their account and the support account and can pass emails (labels and all) between the two accounts - or at least from their individual account into the support account. Any ideas?

    Hey everyone, I'm looking for a utility for Windows that will, with a keyboard shortcut send an application to the system tray, and hitting the same keystroke (or even a different one) to restore it. This behavior is very similar to Apple + . when using Tweetie to show/hide the app in OS X. I know of applications like Tray it!, and Autohotkey, but I wanted to know if there was one that did it all. Does anyone have a solution for this that they have found?

  • Dual pane file manager for Mac OS

    Is there a good customizable dual-pane file manager for Mac like Total Commander / Far Manager in Windows, or like Krusader / Midnight Commander in Linux? I used to work on Windows for quite a while and mostly used Far Manager and sometimes Total Commander, then I switched to Ubuntu Linux and used Krusader, now I switched to Mac OS (Snow Leopard) and I'm having a hard time trying to find a good file manager... Many of the existing applications are trying to replace the Finder with "multimedia capabilities nobody cares about in file manager - IMHO" (Path Finder, ForkLift), some of them are almost good dual-pane file managers (couldn't remember examples), but none of them worked for me mostly because of one reason: I couldn't integrate my file/folder comparison utility (Araxis Merge for Mac) with them... The way it worked for me in Windows and Linux is that I was setting the cursor on one file in the left pane, then setting the right-pane cursor on another file in right pane, then I pressed a hotkey that launched Araxis Merge with those to files/folders comparison results. It was very easy to set up in Far Manager (Windows) and Krusader (Linux, actually in Linux I used "Meld" instead of Araxis Merge...) The tool I'm looking for doesn't necessarily has to be free...     I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and I want to install turnkey linux's LAMP server on my machine to test out my code. I installed Turnkey LAMP via VirtualBox and it seems to be working because I can access the http://localhost. My question is: How do I manipulate files via VirtualBox? For example, if I had installed LAMP on my machine (not on a virtual machine), I could easily add/edit/delete files in the var/WWW folder. Where is the equivalent of "WWW" folder on Virtualbox and how can I interface with it? Thanks,

    My work setup relies on old Windows XP. Now, when Windows XP isn't supported by new hardware, it's getting harder and harder to buy a notebook on which Windows XP can run natively with all essential hardware (wireless cards, graphics, sound etc). Since I don't expect my personal setup to turn away from Windows XP any time soon, I'm investigating the following trick: why not buy any decent hardware which Linux can fully utilize, and use it as a virtual host for a guest session with e.g. Windows XP. I like using hibernation, so I prefer this Linux to be as thin as possible, only enough to support VirtualBox, KVM or any other virtualization software. Question: Are there any "standard" ways to do this, like Linux distributions aimed specifically on being light virtualization host?

  • How do I make an exe into a service on Windows?

    I recently made an application that has multiple parts. One of the parts is a networking tool - it always starts with the OS, and it never displays any sort of message. It does, however, start an incredibly irritating console, which is impossible to get rid of without closing the program itself (please just accept this one as given). I have decided to work around this problem by starting the program (it's a *.exe) as a service, thus stopping it from showing up at all. As the application will be distributed to various computers (hence the need for a networking tool in the first place). I need a way to make this program install as a service (so, I don't really want answers that tell me to go through a series of menus on the Control Panel or download a 3rd-party application that has to stay on whichever computer the service will run on). How can I do this?

  • Out of sync audio / video on Hackintohs

    I have a PC with OSx86 on it. (10.6.2) Under Leopard my videos worked great, but now with VLC the audio is all garbled and video is way too fast. In Quicktime X video is too fast. MPlayer OSX Extended plays videos fine, but doesn't support many codecs. I have a Geforce 9800 GTX with qe ci ocl... If theres no solution, then are there any other players for OS X that support a lot of codecs? I don't like Windows so that's not an option. Thanks

  • What is "WinZip Registry Optimizer" and whatever happened to WinZip?

    So some file the other day told me I needed something like WinZip to unzip it. I was tired and didn't think about what I was doing as I cheerfully downloaded it, because I remember years and years ago I used to use it all the time. But then I found it barely worked at all in the first place, would only work for a few days before I had to start paying for it, and worst of all, forced a supplementary install of something called "WinZip Registry Optimizer." After installing 7-zip and getting rid of WinZip, I found this Registry Optimizer continually popping up and telling me my computer was loaded with viruses and errors and I just had to buy it. This obviously means the Optimizer is a virus unto itself, and I uninstalled it from the control panel. But still, it bothers me. I googled it and found the WinZip site proudly offering downloads of this program, this spamware. What happened? Why has a once-mainstream software developer been reduced to this?

  • Linux Sound Drivers - Recompiling kernel with ehcd-hcd module

    I just installed Linux Mint and I am trying to get my usb soundcard to work. I am completely new to Linux so I have only been learning about all the important parts of the OS this afternoon. No one I know has compiled kernel so I can't ask anyone. I am following instructions on this site: http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Benutzer/BigMc#Final-setup-of-US-122L-US-144 "Recompile your Kernel with ehcd-hcd as a module: Instructions for Ubuntu (german) Change "Device Drivers - USB support - EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support)" to "M" when configuring. Make sure you also install the kernel headers." I know how to do any of these processes. Someone mentioned a package manager. Is recompiling basically in layman's terms reinstallation? Where do I go to the change device drivers? Cheers Edit: I am attempting to be able to use my Tascam US-144 on Linux Mint. Apparently, to use it properly it has to regress to functionality of a former unit (US-122), so according to the instructions a USB port has to be USB 1.0, rather than USB 2.0. I've tried using that ndis** programme for wireless drivers but with no success.

  • Thunderbird alerts when expected email does not arrive

    I am on Ubuntu 12.04 using Thunderbird as email client. Both are up to date in terms of updates. I have bunch of nightly jobs that do the work and send a status mail. It gets tedious if you keep getting same/similar mails every day so I ended up writing a mail filter rule which causes emails to end up in their respective folders automatically. If things are going ok, I really don't need to read emails. Failure emails are sent to different alias - if the job runs. We recently discovered that one of the job had not run for few days as someone accidentally disabled it. In order to avoid such problems in future, I would like to setup thunderbird in such a way that if I don't get email from given address within given duration, it should alert me. My dream solution is to set up frequency - some jobs do run every 4 hours. Is this possible? Can I setup Thunderbird (preferred) or other email client for reminding me when expected email does not show up. Based on comments and answer I received, here are the reasons why I would like to use Thunderbird. We are already using Thunderbird. It has calender support via plugin, so I suppose someone is already watching time to remind us about the event. May be this another type of event. Additional job is one more failure point, may complicate life if it has to monitor multiple hosts. Additional tools - same thing, one more failure point. Thunderbird can be run across all the platforms we are using - Windows and Ubuntu. It sort of becomes platform independent solution.

  • Sharepoint 2010 site access denied for Active Dirtectory group member

    I created a blank site in Sharepoint 2010 and in Site Actions-->Permissions I removed all the users and added an Active directory group which has me as member and few others. After this I logged in as myself and it does not show that Portal on Left navigation. If I try to browse to that portal as myself it says "access denied"? I don't know where I am wrong. I am stuck from yesterday. If some one could help it would be great. Thanks.

  • Running DNS locally for home network

    I have a small home network that just got larger ( New roommate, My existing roommate got a laptop (on top of her computer)j, my friends coming over with laptop, etc ). I'd like to run a local DNS server for lookups of my local network stuff (fileserver.local, windowsTV.local, machineA.local, machineB.local, appletv.local). I used to have a business line with a static IP, and run bind/named internally. However, now, I have a normal account. My ISP's DNS servers are constantly changing (for whatever reasons my ISP doesn't like to keep the same IP range for long). I need my local DNS to be automatically updated to use my ISP's DNS for external traffic, but be able to maintain an internal DNS server (getting to update the hosts file is being a hassle with every new machine on top of rebuilding existing machines with win7 or Ubuntu 9.04). Additionally, My ISP's DNS servers often crash or become unresponsive. Are there any open DNS servers that are reliable (i don't want to reconfig every day) that I could use as my primary, then if those fail, then use my ISP's? UPDATE: Also looking for each workstation to be able to use dhcp to connect, but instead of getting ISP dns servers, getting my internal one.... Thanks

  • Hooking up a laptop to an HDTV via VGA

    I have a 2-3 year old laptop running XBMC, and I have an HDTV that I'd like to connect it to. The only output that the laptop has is VGA (and S-Video - I don't know if the TV supports it) . The TV doesn't support VGA input, but takes HDMI. -- Is it worth buying a VGA-to-HDMI converter? As in this: -- Are there any other, cheaper options available? There's a lot of information around the WWW, but a lot of it's outdated and it's hard to digest everything. I know of at least one other option, and that's a USB to HDMI connection, but I don't even know what to look for or where to get started on that one. I also suspect it might be a little more complicated. If it's cheaper then it could be worth it. EDIT More Details: Intel integrated graphics card (Intel 945 Express Chipset Family) The TV supports up to 1080p resolution

  • Can't connect to public WiFi with MacBookPro at coffee shops and libraries

    The Problem: I can't connect to public, unencrypted WiFi at my local public library or Peets Coffee. My Setup: Late 2006 MacBookPro running 10.5.8. I have Parallels installed. It's supposed to work like this: 1) Connect to their unencrypted WiFi network 2) Open a browser which redirects you to their "enter password/agree to terms" page. 3) Browse normally. I can connect to the WiFi network, but when I try to authenticate I always get stuck in a redirect loop. It's been like this for a while. Even before I upgraded to 10.5.8. I never have trouble with encrypted networks or regular open WiFi. What I've tried: Disabling Parallels connections in Network Prefs. Superstition: somehow Parallels installed something in the network stack that's messing me up. Pinging the IP address of the WiFi node I'm connected to. I can ping it, it's there, but I still get stuck in this authentication redirect loop. Tried different browsers, tried different cookie and security settings. Even tried IE under Parallels. No dice. Tried flushing DNS cache. Asked library and coffee employees for help. It didn't go well. My Question: Anybody else have this problem? What should I be looking for?
