• ASP.NET MVC pass information from controller to view WITHOUT ViewData, ViewModel, or Session

  I have a unique scenario where I want a base controller to grab some data and store it in a list. The list should be accessible from my views just as ViewData is. I will be using this list on every page and would like a cleaner solution than just shoving it in the ViewDataDictionary. After attempting to come up with a solution, I thought I would create a custom ViewPage with a property to hold my list. My custom ViewPage would inherit from System.Web.MVC.ViewPage. However, I do not know where MVC passes the viewdata from the controller off to the view. More importantly, how do I get it to pass my list down to the view? Thanks for the help.

• Asp.Net MVC best way to update cached table

  There are certain tables that get called often but updated rarely. One of these tables is Departments. So to save DB trips, I think it is ok to cache this table taking into consideration that the table has very small size. However, once you cached it an issue of keeping the table data fresh occurs. So what is the best way to determine that the table is dirty and therefore requires a reload and how that code should be invoked. I look for solution that will be scalable. So updating the cache right after inserting will not work. So if one machine inserted the record all other on network should get notified to reload the cache. I was thinking for calling corresponding web service from T-SQL but don't really like the idea of consuming recourses on sql server. So what are the best practices to resolve this type of problems.   SQL Server 2008 provides the ability to script data as Insert statements using the Generate Scripts option in Management Studio. Is it possible to access the same functionality from within a SSIS package? Here's what I'm trying to accomplish... I have a scheduled job that nightly scripts out all the schema and data for a SQL Server 2008 database and then uses the script to create a "mirror copy" SQLCE 3.5 database. I've been using Narayana Vyas Kondreddi's sp_generate_inserts stored procedure to accomplish this, but it has problems with some datatypes and greater-than-4K columns (holdovers from SQL Server 2000 days). The Script Data function looks like it could solve my problems, if only I could automate it. Any suggestions?

• How does jQuery .data() work?

  My Javascript knowledge is pretty limited. Instead of asking several javascript questions I got the "message" from Stack overflow and started using jQuery right away in order to save me some time. However several times I do not undestand the "magic" behind jQuery and I would love to learn the details. I want to use .data() in my application. The examples are very helpful. I do not understand however WHERE these values are stored. I inspect the webpage with Firebug and as soon as .data() saves an object to a dom element, I do not see any change in Firebug (either HTML or Dom tabs). I tried to look at jQuery source, but it is very advanced for my Javascript knowledge and I lost myself. So the question is: Where do the values stored by jQuery.data() actually go? Can I inspect/locate/list/debug them using a tool?

  The excel spreadsheet is connecting to SQL server 2005 using the connection string below: Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=True;Initial Catalog=XXXXXX;Data Source=XXXXXX;Extended Properties="HDR=No";Use Procedure for Prepare=1;Auto Translate=True;Packet Size=4096;Workstation ID=XXXXXX;Use Encryption for Data=False;Tag with column collation when possible=False It then pulls data from a view into Excel. The business user wants this information without a header row. This will allow her to review then save as a "headless" csv in SAGE file format. I attempted to alter the connection string by adding HDR=No but that hasn't worked. Additionally, I can't delete the header row. Deleting the content replaces the column names with "Column 1" etc. Any ideas appreciated!

  I've got this in my controller: [HttpPost] public void UpdateLanguagePreference(string languageTag) { if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(languageTag)) { throw new ArgumentNullException("languageTag"); } ... } And have this jQuery code POSTing to the controller: jQuery.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: '/Config/UpdateLanguagePreference', contentType: 'application/json; charset=utf-8', data: '{ "languageTag": "' + selectedLanguage + '" }' }); When I try to the code, however, I get the error: Server Error in '/' Application. Value cannot be null. Parameter name: languageTag What's the problem? Isn't this how to POST JSON to an MVC Controller? I can examine the POST using Fiddler and see that the request is correct. For some reason, UpdateLanguagePreference() is getting a null or empty string.

  I have a page with several drop down lists that all have the same contents. The page starts out with only three ddls, but more need to be added based on user input. There is also other information associated with the drop down lists that is all in a table. So, when the user clicks a link I add a new row of textboxes and drop down lists to a table. When I add a row to my table, the new drop down lists are empty because there is no view data associated with them. How can I use ajax or jquery to pull the viewdata that I need to populate new drop down lists?

• C# ASP.NET update SQL database with values from text boxes

  Here's what I have. User enters values into text boxes (personal information etc.) and then presses a save changes button. The values in these text boxes get stored in an SQL database. The problem I have is that when updating the database using the values from the text boxes, the page refreshes and the values in the text boxes are lost (or rather they return to the values that are already in the database as the data from the database is loaded into the text boxes on Page_Load). When I update the database using valuse stored in variables it all works fine. What is the best way to update with the values from the text boxes?

  Hello, I have some data that I export into an XML file and put in a remote FTP Server. I have to identified each object with a unique attribute, it doesn't matter wich is, but must be persistent always = it can never change. I don't want to create a unique attribute, sequence, serial, etc. I'm using the objectID but every time I use it a get a new reference. I know that before the object has been saved, it has a 'temporal id', but once it's saved, it gets the definitive. I'm not seeing this, never.   So this is more of a generalized question about MySQLs data types. I'd like to store a 5-digit US zip code (zip_code) properly in this example. A county has 10 different cities and 5 different zip codes. city | zip code -------+---------- city 0 | 33333 city 1 | 11111 city 2 | 22222 city 3 | 33333 city 4 | 44444 city 5 | 55555 city 6 | 33333 city 7 | 33333 city 8 | 44444 city 9 | 22222 I would typically structure a table like this as varchar(50), int(5) and not think twice about it. (1) If we wanted to ensure that this table had only one of 5 different zip codes we should use the enum data type, right? Now think of a similar scenario on a much larger scale. In a state, there are five-hundred cities with 418 different zip codes. (2) Should I store 418 zip codes as an enum data type OR as an int and create another table to reference?

• Obfuscating ASP.Net dll breaks web application.

  I wouldn't usually bother to obfuscate a web application DLL but right now I have to share some server space with someone who might have a conflict of interest and might be tempted to steal the deal and decompile it. Not an ideal solution I know but hey. So I am using VS 2005, a web deployment project (which compiles into a single DLL) and Dotfuscator community edition. When I obfuscate the DLL the web application breaks and I get some message like Could not load type 'Browse' from assembly MyAssembly So I searched around and found that if I disable renaming then it should fix it. Which it does. But now when I look at the DLL using .Net reflector I can see everything again. So this seems kind of pointless. Is there a way to get this to work? Is there a better way to protect my DLL from someone I have to share a server with? UPDATE: I figured out my problem. All the classnames have changed but now all my <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="mycode.aspx.cs" Inherits="mycode" % is incorrect because mycode no longer exists. It is now aef or something. Is there any tool out there that will also change the names of the Codefile and Inherits tags?

• Can you Export/Import Flex (4) Data Services?

  Flex newb here. I'm working in flashbuilder 4 (flex4?), and am being asked to create the client-side data services integration 'layer' in a flex app. There is another team working on the actual UI/Presentation. Both parts must be deployed in a single swf. If I use the data/services wizard to build out my service connections (and generate the ActionScript), is it possible to export these 'connections' so that they can easily be imported into another project? Or must they be defined through the wizard all over again? The other team wants to be able to see the connections appear in the new project's Data/Services inspector (IDE Tab). Thanks!

You can ask why are you using validation control if you dont want to show them My asnwer is "I use them for validation logic they handle" I looked the properties of the validation controls and cant find something that wil help me doing this. • Problem with displaying image from DB using asp.net MVC 2

  Hello! I'm having trouble with displaying image from db. I think that method for saving image is working, because I see in DB that varbinary fields have some value, and that image type is correct. Also the size of image. But when I want to display image for product i don't get anything. Just blank space.. here is my code... public byte[] GetImage(int productID) { Product product = products.GetByID(productID); byte[] imageData = product.ImageData.ToArray(); return imageData; } That code is in my controller. Second is code from view : <% if (product.ImageData != null) { %> <img src='/product/getimage/<%= Html.Encode(product.ID) %>' alt=""/> <% } %> I tried some solutions found here on stack overflow, and everyone do it like this, but it's working for them. I dont have any idea why images aren't displayed. When i look at source code of page at debugging i have : <img src='/product/getimage/18' alt=""/> I'm using .net 4.0, MVC 2, VS 2010... • Managing changes in memory-based data format

  So I've been using a compact data type in c++, and saving from memory or loading from the file involves just copying the bits of memory in and out. However, the obvious drawback of this is that if you need to add/remove elements on the data, it becomes kind of messy. There's also problems with versioning, suppose you distribute a program which uses version A of the data, and then the next day you make version B of it, and then later on version C. I suppose this can be solved by using something like xml or json. But suppose you can't do that for technical reasons. What is the best way to do this, apart from having to make different if cases etc (which would be pretty ugly, I'd imagine)

• Uniquely identify two instances of one browser that share Session state?

  I want to make sure that a user isn't editing the same form data in two different browser tabs or windows (of the same web browser instance). It's to stop the user from stupidly overwriting their own data as they continue through a very long form process. On the server ongoing data input through the screens is collected into the Session. Assume for any browser, all tabs and windows run in the same instance of it (i.e. not each in a separate process). Obviously the browser tabs and windows share the same cookies in this scenario so cookie modification seems out of the question for viable solutions. This is also the reason they shared the same session. Considering that the form is already created and this is one of the final touches, how can I use ASP.NET, hopefully easily, to oversee this "feature"?

• unsetting application role in classic ASP

  Hi, I'm trying to unset an application role but have been failing miserably. I was able to get the cookie value after setting (sp_setapprole) the application role. But I haven't been able to use that cookie (type varbinary / byte array) in my query to unset using sp_unsetapprole. If it was any other stored procedure it wouldn't have been a problem. I was able to use Command object and create a parameter which takes data type input of adVarBinary (204) and execute the command line.. but to the Server the query goes as below. exec sp_executesql N'sp_unsetapprole @P1 ',N'@P1 varbinary(36)',0x01000000CD11697F8F0ED3627BC1DAD25FB9CEB3A2EC5B289C658235E510CD9F29230000 Since sp_setapprole and sp_unsetapprole have to be run ad hoc, the sql server is failing to run this line. And I'm finding it hard to append varbinary cookie value to a simple query such as 'sp_unsetapprole ' & varKookie so it runs "directly" on to the server. Any kind of suggestions are welcome.   I'm currently struggling with Core Data iCloud migration. I want to move a store from an iCloud ubiquity container (.nosync) to a local URL. Problem is whenever I call something like this: NSPersistentStore *newStore = [self.persistentStoreCoordinator migratePersistentStore: currentiCloudStore toURL: localURL options: nil withType: NSSQLiteStoreType error: &error]; I get this error: -[NSPersistentStoreCoordinator addPersistentStoreWithType:configuration:URL:options:error:](1055): CoreData: Ubiquity: Error: A persistent store which has been previously added to a coordinator using the iCloud integration options must always be added to the coordinator with the options present in the options dictionary. If you wish to use the store without iCloud, migrate the data from the iCloud store file to a new store file in local storage. file://localhost/Users/sch/Library/Containers/bla/Data/Documents/tmp.sqlite. This will be a fatal error in a future release Anyone ever seen this error? Maybe I'm just missing the right migration options?

• Problems persisting Core Data structures on iPhone/iPad

  I have an iPhone/iPad app using Core Data to keep my application data. Sometimes, even though I don't get any error messages, the data is not really saved so when the app starts anew, it's all gone. This problem seems to disappear after physically rebooting the device, but otherwise it's pretty random and hard to track. Has anyone seen a similar issue? Also, it seems to happen more often in the iPhone 1st generation, less so in the 3G/3GS, and seldom in the iPad. Very strange...

Now on the first gird I am fetching data of employee names. Now on the second grid I have to display data of manager names and their comments. The data is on the same table. On show button of the first grid it shows all the employees. then on AdvWebGrid.ClickLink or any selected user on the first grid , i have to display the manager names and their comments on the second grid.
