• Troubleshooting an overheating CPU

  I & my father just recently put together a new PC. Specs below. From the very beginning, on boot it will often complain that the CPU is too hot. If I sit in BIOS and watch the CPU, it'll drop back down from red to blue (<72C), at which point I've tended to just boot into Windows...and haven't had any problems. In fact, I've played a couple hours straight of Skyrim at max settings, and not had any visible issues. That said, I've occasionally walked away & come back to find that it's crashed. Yesterday, it crashed (while idle) twice in 12 hours, which shifted the balance from busy-with-life to nervous-I'm-about-to-melt-something. I just installed Core Temp which is showing my 4 cores fluxuating between 70-98C. I'm guessing at this point that the CPU fan may be incorrectly installed or defective. My first thought is to either (a) add water cooling (which the case supports) and / or (b) replace the CPU fan with an after-market one. That said, I'm very open to suggestions. A note, while I certainly don't want to burn money here, I have a baby coming any day now and am still unpacking from a recent move so if I have a choice between an option that costs money and another that takes a while...I'll happily spend a bit extra. Side question: Should I be nervous to even have this on at this point? Let me know if there's something useful I could add to my report. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to your suggestions! Thanks. If you think that there'll be a bug with the following order please tell me where. Another thing - I would like to redirect for example www.myweb.com/products.php to www.myweb.com/products/ (I mean that the URL in the address bar will change). • Slow, choppy video playback with nVidia 8600GT

  I have an nVidia 8600GT card (made by EVGA) on a machine with Windows Vista (AMD Athlon X2 processors) and four gigs of ram. It runs pretty good, but I have had some slow/choppy/stuterring video playback issues whenever watching flash videos on Youtube or other sites. The problem is there with both Firefox and IE flash videos, but is maybe worse with Firefox. I also tried Linux with nVidia's binary drivers and it was about the same. I downloaded EVGA precision which allows me to control stuff like the fan and clock speed. The card's temp (in both Vista and Linux) is usually at 66C when idle (not playing a game or watching anything). It goes up a little when watching a video (maybe 68-72C). Any ideas on how to fix this? UPDATE: The issues are both with full screen and embedded flash videos. I have Flash 10.0.32.18 (always make sure I use most recent for security), and the CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+ at 2.11 GHZ. The current GPU driver installed is the most recent GeForce one from last July.

• Unable to install .NET Framework 3.5 to my XP machine

  I have an application that requires .NET 3.5, but I can't install it. The installer quits saying "it has encoutered a problem during setup. If I look at some of the error logs in the tmp directory I see. Error occurred while initializing fusion. It seems that I have 2.0 SP1 installed. Any ideas how I can get it to work? I went through the temp directory and found these references to the error. Any ideas? • Getting a "CPU over temperature error", but temperatures seem to be normal

  I built a PC with the following parts: CPU: i5-2500 Motherboard: Asus P8H67-M EVO rev 3.0 RAM: G-Skill Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1333 Video: GTX 560-Ti 1GB I used a crappy (but functioning) old case and a 500W Powercooler supply. The rig also includes 3 HDs and a DVD-RW. Whenever I push the system mildly it resets right away (looks more like power off/power on) and gives me a "CPU over temperature error". However, BIOS always reports <65ºC for the CPU at the moment of the reset, same as Core Temp and RealTemp. This is RealTemp's log since launching BF3 until the reset (just over 1 minute, as you can see) Just to be sure I've checked the CPU cooler and re-applied the thermal paste twice, but nothing changed. I'm not overclocking at all. What am I missing here? Could it be that the old power supply is generating this error? Maybe the mobo isn't reporting temperatures correctly? I don't have a clue on how to troubleshoot this, help Thanks in advance!

• Win7 Hangs During App Install/Upgrade/Uninstall

  I have a custom built PC that intermittently hangs when installing, uninstalling, or upgrading applications. Technical Specs ASUS P5E w/ WiFi Motherboard Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 Processor 4x 2GB G.Skill DDR2 800 SDRAM ASUS EAH2900XT / Radeon HD 2900XT 512MB Video Card Under normal operation the machine runs reliably, even under heavy load, such as video transcoding. The temperature never gets anywhere near where I would worry about it. However, the machine regularly hangs (complete lockup, no response to keyboard or mouse, no activity on-screen) when either installing a new application, uninstalling an existing application, or applying patches to existing applications or the OS. This is extremely frustrating as this machine is primarily used as a HTPC. Several apps are configured for automatic updates, and these updates sometimes cause the machine to lockup while we are watching content on the PC. In previously investigating this issue, I found one likely problem could be my Logitech Webcam. The Logitech software has a bug that leaves an entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\SessionManager\PendingFileRenameOperations Which references the Temp directory. My registry contained this error, so I uninstalled the webcam software and deleted this registry key value. Unfortunately, the machine will still intermittently hang. I've noticed that the hangs always happen when an install/upgrade/uninstall requires elevated privileges (presumably to modify the registry). I can typically get at least one install/upgrade/uninstall to complete after a reboot, but after that it is a game of russian roulette to see if the operation will succeed or hang the machine. The event log is not helpful, as log messages end at the time of the hang, with no record of a warning or error. My only recourse when the machine hangs in this way is to perform a hard reset/power cycle. Any tips on how to further debug this issue are greatly appreciated.

• Howto get exit code of a script started in screen session

  Hi folks, I am currently creating a backup script which uses screen to start a backup job with rsync inside a screen session. The backup jobs are started as follows. screen -dmS backup /usr/bin/rsync ... As soon as the rsync job is finished, the screen session is terminated automatically. To make sure, that the backup was successful, I would like to check the exit code of the rsync job but unfortunately I really don't know how to get the exit code after the screen was terminated. Does someone have a good idea how to automatically check, if the rsync job was successful or not? Would be great if someone does. I already thought about using a temp file but like this: screen -dmS myScreen "rsync -av ... ; echo $? /tmp/myExitCode" but this unfortunately does not work. Then I thought about using stderr like in the example below: screen -dmS myScreen "rsync -av ... 2 /tmp/rsync-sterr None of my ideas worked out so far, since stderr is not written when I use the command above. :-( ? • Office documents on intranet all requiring second login and can't pass auth? Disable webdav?

  I am not sure what is going on, but recently all the Office documents on our intranet get prompted a second time for login and according to the error logs it looks like it's trying to use webdav to open (an editable?) version of the document to save directly on the server? We have no sharepoint server setup or anything, but this shouldn't be happening. All I want is for the document to be saved or opened from a local copy in temp like normal. Edit: I should clarify behavior, it asks if you want to save or open it, upon choosing open open, it asks to re-authenicate, you put in the user information and the login box comes up 3 times acting like you entered the wrong password. For some users, after passing the login box the third time, it still opens up, for others their browser just locks up. • Unix sort 10x slower with keys specified

  My data: It's a 71 MB file with 1.5 million rows. It has 6 fields, four of which are strings of avg. 15 characters, two are integers. Three of the fields are sometimes empty. All six fields combine to form a unique key - and that's what I need to sort on. Sort statement: sort -t ',' -k1,1 -k2,2 -k3,3 -k4,4 -k5,5 -k6,6 -o a_out.csv a_in.csv The problem: If I sort without keys, it takes 30 seconds. If I sort with keys, it takes 660 seconds. I need to sort with keys to keep this generic and useful for other files that have non-key fields as well. The 30 second timing is fine, but the 660 is a killer. I could theoretically move the temp directory to SSD, and/or split the file into 4 parts, sort them separately (in parallel) then merge the results, etc. But I'm hoping for something simpler since these results are so bad as-is. Any suggestions?

• Odd one: IE6 showing the "view source" command enabled when I was expecting it to be disabled.

  Hi, OK, I admit this problem is odd. I'm just trying to understand why IE is behaving the way it is. I realise that logic may not apply here :) I have Internet Explorer 6 (Sp1) running on Windows 2000. The IE option "Do not store encrypted pages to disk" is checked (enabled). The temporary internet files folder is empty. TEMP and TMP environment variables are set to valid folders. I'm connected to a web server over SSL. The web server is serving a page over SSL with the HTTP cache-control header set to "no-cache, no-store". I was expecting the "view source" command to be greyed out in this circumstance (as it is on another machine). But it works. When I "view source", I get an entry in the Temporary Internet Files folder with an "internet address" property of "view-source:https://myserver/...." and the content of the page. I wasn't expecting that. I can't understand why one machine is different to another in this regard. Obviously there is some environment/setup difference, but I can't track it down. Anyone have any bright ideas?

  I have an app that I'm working on that polls usage from an ISP (Download quota). I've tried threading this via 'new Thread(ThreaProc)' but that didn't work, now trying an IAsyncResult based approach which does the same thing... I've got no idea on how to rectify, please help? • CS1685 Warning causes a CS0433 error when targeting 3.5 in VS2010

  I have a 2010 project that is targeting .NET v3.5. It was working fine until I started to mess with configurations a bit and now I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. The project doesn't have ANY references added. It won't even let me add a reference to System.Core as it is added by the 'build system'. warning CS1685: The predefined type 'System.Func' is defined in multiple assemblies in the global alias; using definition from 'c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\mscorlib.dll' IFilter.cs(82,49): error CS0433: The type 'System.Func' exists in both 'c:\Program Files (x86)\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\Framework\v3.5\System.Core.dll' and 'c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\mscorlib.dll' Looks like something is grabbing onto 4.0 but I'm not quite sure how to fix it. Any one else run into this?

• C# Open Source/Free Social Networking SDK

  I am currently gathering some technology requirements for a site that will be a social network based. I don't want to re-invent the wheel so i am looking for some type of SDK or collection of tools that can provide me with a way of creating/managing a social network. I understand that no framework will probably fit my exact needs so I am also looking for a flexible/extendable framework. An example extension point would be allowing the user to provide sub networks, maybe a global network that could be sub classified as work and friends. Beyond that it would also be nice to somehow be able to import contacts from other networking sites (Facebook, Linked In, etc). My current technology suite will more than likely consist of the following: IIS 7.0 WCF Data Services SQL Server 2006 ASP.NET front end. So my two questions are 1) C# Open Source Social Network SDK 2) C# Open Source Social Netowrk APIs (facebook, linked in, etc) If there is any more information you may need please let me know.

• How to access the FirstData web service integration WSDL file?

  FirstData has horrendous customer support, but I have to integrate with their Global Gateway web service for a project I'm working on. I'm simply trying to run the Axis2 wsdl2java tool according to the instructions in their manual. This basically consists of adding the keyStore and keyStorePassword JVM parameter. I've done both, but I continue to get Connection reset errors when trying to run: wsdl2java.bat -uri https://www.staging.linkpointcentral.com/fdggwsapi/order.wsdl -S C:\ When I try to access the URL with my browser, I get Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): Unknown error. I assume there are developers out there who have completed a FirstData web service integration. What am I doing wrong? • Populating Tcl Treeview with Sqlite Data

  Hello: I am building a Tcl application that reads off of a Sqlite Db. Currently, I can enter data into the database using the Tcl frontend. Now, I am trying to figure out how to display the data within the Sqlite Db from the Tcl frontend. After a little bit of research, I found that the treeview widget would work well for my needs. I now have the following code: set z1 [ttk::treeview .c1.t1 -columns {1 2} -show headings] $z1 heading #1 -text "First Name" $z1 heading #2 -text "Last Name" proc Srch {} {global z1 sqlite3 db test.db pack $z1 db close } When the "Srch" procedure is executed (button event), the treeview (z1) appears with the headings First Name and Last Name. Additionally, the Sqlite Db gets connected, then closes. I wanted to add code that would populate the treeview from the Sqlite Db between connecting to the Db and packing the treeview (z1).   I was looking for a way to route http://www.example.com/WebService.asmx to http://www.example.com/service/ using only the ASP.NET 3.5 Routing framework without needing to configure the IIS server. Until now I have done what most tutorials told me, added a reference to the routing assembly, configured stuff in the web.config, added this to the Global.asax: protected void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e) { RouteCollection routes = RouteTable.Routes; routes.Add( "WebService", new Route("service/{*Action}", new WebServiceRouteHandler()) ); } ...created this class: public class WebServiceRouteHandler : IRouteHandler { public IHttpHandler GetHttpHandler(RequestContext requestContext) { // What now? } } ...and the problem is right there, I don't know what to do. The tutorials and guides I've read use routing for pages, not webservices. Is this even possible? Ps: The route handler is working, I can visit /service/ and it throws the NotImplementedException I left in the GetHttpHandler method.

• Rails Resque workers fail with PGError: server closed the connection unexpectedly

  I have site running rails application and resque workers running in production mode, on Ubuntu 9.10, Rails 2.3.4, ruby-ee 2010.01, PostgreSQL 8.4.2 Workers constantly raised errors: PGError: server closed the connection unexpectedly. My best guess is that master resque process establishes connection to db (e.g. authlogic does that when use User.acts_as_authentic), while loading rails app classes, and that connection becomes corrupted in fork()ed process (on exit?), so next forked children get kind of broken global ActiveRecord::Base.connection I could reproduce very similar behaviour with this sample code imitating fork/processing in resque worker. (AFAIK, users of libpq recommended to recreate connections in forked process anyway, otherwise it's not safe ) But, the odd thing is that when I use pgbouncer or pgpool-II instead of direct pgsql connection, such errors do not appear. So, the question is where and how should I dig to find out why it is broken for plain connection and is working with connection pools? Or reasonable workaround?

• CUDA linking error - Visual Express 2008 - nvcc fatal due to (null) configuration file

  Hi, I've been searching extensively for a possible solution to my error for the past 2 weeks. I have successfully installed the Cuda 64-bit compiler (tools) and SDK as well as the 64-bit version of Visual Studio Express 2008 and Windows 7 SDK with Framework 3.5. I'm using windows XP 64-bit. I have confirmed that VSE is able to compile in 64-bit as I have all of the 64-bit options available to me using the steps on the following website: (since Visual Express does not inherently include the 64-bit packages) http://jenshuebel.wordpress.com/2009/02/12/visual-c-2008-express-edition-and-64-bit-targets/ I have confirmed the 64-bit compile ability since the "x64" is available from the pull-down menu under "Tools-Options-VC++ Directories" and compiling in 64-bit does not result in the entire project being "skipped". I have included all the needed directories for 64-bit cuda tools, 64 SDK and Visual Express (\VC\bin\amd64). • ASP.NET MVC - Find Absolute Path to the App_Data folder from Controller

  What is the correct way to find the absolute path to the App_Data folder from a Controller in an ASP.NET MVC project? I'd like to be able to temporarily work with an .xml file and I don't want to hardcode the path. This does not work: [HandleError] public class HomeController : Controller { public ActionResult Index() { string path = VirtualPathUtility.ToAbsolute("~/App_Data/somedata.xml"); //.... do whatever return View(); } } I think outside of the web context VirtualPathUtility.ToAbsolute() doesn't work. string path comes back as "C:\App_Data\somedata.xml" Where should I determine the path of the .xml file in an MVC app? global.asax and stick it an application-level variable?
