• Best cross-platform solution for network server?

  Hi, im starting a new project and for the first time i want to be cross-platform. But the tricky is my project would involve listen server, cryptos etc., etc. So i was wondering what is the best solution for cross-platform development (OpenSSL, instead of MSCrypto etc.) that would be easy to write with VS2010 (yeah the RC). The language is still not specified (depends on witch we would be easier) but im leaning to Visual C++. In Cross-Platform i mean windows/generic unix compilation.

• Images or files in GNU Smalltalk?

  Hi, I'm new to Smalltalk. I think I understand the basics of the language and now want to start with GNU Smalltalk (as it's free and has bindings for GTK). As I'm coming from the PHP and Java-Corner, I'm not familiar with the concept of the Smalltalk images. And I even read now, that you don't need to use images in GNU Smalltalk. Now I'm confused ;-) So is it possible to work with files and to include the classes I need with the PackageLoader class? I would be happy when I could use my favourite texteditor (vim) for coding instead of an IDE, too ;-) Please enlight me :-)

• Creating/compling .net data class within an application

  Is there a pattern, Xml structure, architecture technique we can use to create simple data holder class code that we can deserialise to/from and do that at runtime? We're in the early design stage of a .Net project and one of our goals is to make the resulting system extensible through configuration without needing a developer. We need to support new sources of data, typcially delivered as Xml messages. Currently we convert/deserialise the messages into simple classes and then use an already existing language which can manipulate those classes as we need. That works well when you have a developer to map the Xml to simple class, create the class and then write the deserialisation, but it's not extensible for for an administrator. Our target user audience is high end DBA and/or network admin - people who can handle Xml but may not know C#.

  I hear that C isn't so type-safe and I think that I could use that as an advantage for my current project. I'm designing an interpreter with the goal for the VM to be extremely fast, much faster than Ruby and Python, for example. Now I know that premature optimization "is the root of all evil" but this is rather a conceptual problem. I have to use some sort of struct to represent all values in my language (from number over string to list and map) Would the following be possible? struct Value { ValueType type; void* value; } I would store the actual values elsewhere, e.g: a separate array for strings and integers, value* would then point to some member in this table. I would always know the type of the value via the type variable, so there wouldn't be any problems with type errors. Now: Is this even possible in terms of syntax and typing?

  I'm not sure that it's not implemented yet, I hope that it is. But I know that in .Net programmers should manually run time-consuming task in the background thread. So every time we handle some UI event and we understand that this will take some time we also understand that this will hang UI thread and our application. And then we make all this Background work things and handle callbacks or whatever. So my question is: Is there in some language/platform a mechanism that will automatically run time-consuming tasks in the background and will do all related work itself? So we just write the code for handling specific UI event and this code will be somehow detected as time-consuming and will be executed in background. And if there isn't, then why?

• Auto-complete/suggestion popup menu in GtkTextView

  I'm trying to create a system that will allow me to respond to the current text and auto-complete/suggest what should come next. For example if the user starts to type "Batm" then the system would respond with a menu showing the full completed word "Batman". Think of an IDE like Eclipse or Visual Studio and you get the idea. I understand how to create a popup menu in Gtk+ but what I don't understand is the following: How do I grab the word that the user is currently typing from a GtkTextView (or SourceView) so that I can do a lookup and offer suggestions? How do I position the menu in such a way that it sits next to the current text item (like it would in an IDE)? If anyone could offer suggestions or even a link to a tutorial or example on how to do this correctly I would be forever grateful. As always thanks for you help! Programming language: C

We're running PHP5 on the server and we try to find a good way for managing errors and status reports that arises from the usage of our functions. While using return in functions, the execution is ended, so nothing more can be sent back. Right?   At the beginning PHP was a scripting language. But after the introduction and improvement of OOP I see more and more objects added to the core. They started with SPL which grew a lot, now we have DOMDocument family, DateTime family which should be part of PECL, Pear or Zend Framework or implemented by each one of us. Shouldn't be php only for build-in functions and all these objects passed to something else? Example. DateTime class is part of the core and I see it very similar with Zend_Date.

  Hi, I have a python app engine code (matured backend) - and we are now planning to have a front end for that code. I was wondering whether it is possible to implement GWT as the front end. Even though Alex Martelli in this post [1] mentions it is not possible, a comment to that post suggests that it is indeed possible using rpc over json for GWT. I was unable to understand how this is possible. In app.yaml file, we have to specify the language to be python, right? In that case, how can it compile GWT based on JAVA?   Hello, I'm the lead developer/architect wanna-be on a J2EE based system/platform at work that serves both real estate and automotive markets. The systems consists of a set of database back ends, web services and two web clients. The platform ends up serving 3 different products: an internal vehicle inventory system for use by company analysts, an external dealer management system (commercialized product), and a real estate inventory system (commercialized). In other words, it follows a software product lines approach....My question is, I'm having trouble communicating to other technical and some business people how this platform architecture is one system that serves multiple markets (by leveraging some existing assets combined with minor modifications)....Is there a formal modeling language that can simplify communicating this intent? I should note that I haven't read much about software product lines, so I'm not sure if there is actually a standard modeling approach to SPL that i'm not aware of....I'm also interested in knowing if there are special configuration management practices for such systems. thanks,

  I’m looking to create a web page with 6 coupons on it, two per line in a web space of 1275 X 1650. Each coupon space will consist of a different image. The problem is I will be creating 20 such web pages that will have these coupons on them. Now some of the same images will appear in different locations/positions on the various web pages. Is there a way to update the same image that appear in different locations/positions at the same time? And what language is used to complete this? I’ve tried CSS but it don’t think it’s possible. So should I be using JavaScript.

I want to create method which extracts certain object type from a list. So the method should receive List as argument, meaning list should contain either Object1 or Object2. I've tried like this : public Object1 extractObject(List<?>){ //some pseudo-code ... loop trough list and check if list item is instance of object one return that instance } The problem with declaring method with List<?> as method argument is that I receive compilation error from eclipse Syntax error on token ">", VariableDeclaratorId expected after this token.
