  • Data Virtualization: Federated and Hybrid

    Data becomes useful when it can be leveraged at the right time. Not only enterprises application stores operate on large volume, velocity and variety of data. Mobile and social computing are in the need of operating in foresaid data. Replicating and transferring large swaths of data is one challenge faced in the field of data integration. However, smaller chunks of data aggregated from a variety of sources presents and even more interesting challenge in the industry. Over the past few decades, technology trends focused on best user experience, operating systems, high performance computing, high performance web sites, analysis of warehouse data, service oriented architecture, social computing, cloud computing, and big data. Operating on the ‘dark data’ becomes mandatory in the future technology trend, although, no solution can make dark data useful data in a single day. Useful data can be quantified by the facts of contextual, personalized and on time delivery. In most cases, data from a single source may not be complete the picture. Data has to be combined and computed from various sources, where data may be captured as hybrid data, meaning the combination of structured and unstructured data. Since related data is often found across disparate sources, effectively integrating these sources determines how useful this data ultimately becomes. Technology trends in 2013 are expected to focus on big data and private cloud. Consumers are not merely interested in where data is located or how data is retrieved and computed. Consumers are interested in how quick and how the data can be leveraged. In many cases, data virtualization is the right solution, and is expected to play a foundational role for SOA, Cloud integration, and Big Data. The Oracle Data Integration portfolio includes a data virtualization product called ODSI (Oracle Data Service Integrator). Unlike other data virtualization solutions, ODSI can perform both read and write operations on federated/hybrid data (RDBMS, Webservices,  delimited file and XML). The ODSI Engine is built on XQuery, hence ODSI user can perform computations on data either using XQuery or SQL. Built in data and query caching features, which reduces latency in repetitive calls. Rightly positioning ODSI, can results in a highly scalable model, reducing spend on additional hardware infrastructure.

    Prologue In previous chapters we have seen how to insert data through EF, with and without sequences. In this one, we are going to see how to Update and delete Data from the DB. Updating data The update of the Entity Data (properties) is a very common and easy action. Before of change any of the properties of the Entity, we can check the EntityState property, and we can see that is EntityState.Unchanged.   For making an update it is needed to get the Entity which will be modified. In the following example, I use the GetEmployeeByNumber to get a valid Entity: 1: EMPLEADOS emp=GetEmployeeByNumber(2); 2: emp.Name="a"; 3: emp.Phone="2"; 4: emp.Mail="aa"; After modifying the desired properties of the Entity, we are going to check again Entitystate property, which now has the EntityState.Modified value. To persist the changes to the DB is necessary to invoke the SaveChanges function of our context. 1: context.SaveChanges(); After modifying the desired properties of the Entity, we are going to check again Entitystate property, which now has the EntityState.Modified value. To persist the changes to the DB is necessary to invoke the SaveChanges function of our context. If we check again the EntityState property we will see that the value will be EntityState.Unchanged.   Deleting Data Another easy action is to delete an Entity.   The first step to delete an Entity from the DB is to select the entity: 1: CLIENTS selectedClient = GetClientByNumber(15); 2: context.CLIENTES.DeleteObject(clienteSeleccionado); Before invoking the DeleteObject function, we will check EntityStet which value must be EntityState.Unchanged. After deleting the object, the state will be changed to EntitySate.Deleted. To commit the action we have to invoke the SaveChanges function. Aftar that, the EntityState property will be EntityState.Detached. Cascade Entity Framework lets cascade updates and deletes, although I never see cascade updates. What is a cascade delete? A cascade delete is an action that allows to delete all the related object to the object we desire to delete. This option could be established in the DB manager, or it could be in the EF model designer. For example: With a given relation (1-N) between clients and requests. The common situation must be to let delete those clients whose have no requests. If we select the relation between both entities, and press the second mouse button, we can see the properties panel of the relation. The props are: This grid shows the relations indicating the Master table(Clients) and the end point (Cabecera or Requests) The property “End 1 OnDelete” indicates the action to do when a Entity from the Master will be deleted. There are two options: - None: No action will be done, it is said, if a Entity has details entities it could not be deleted. - Cascade: It will delete all related entities to the master Entity. If we enable the cascade delete in a relation, and we invoke the DeleteObject function of the set, we could observe that all the related object indicates a Entitystate.Deleted state. Like an update, insert or common delete, until we commit the changes with SaveChanges function, the data would not be commited.     I'm using a flash rotating banner in my website which takes images and descriptions from an XML file. I do changes to my XML very often... but in my local machine, the banner takes a day or two to get updated. Although I can clear my local machine's cache, the problem still remains for other users who visit my web page.. is there a programmatic way in flash or in html to overcome this problem ? Maybe a server configuration? Please help me with this.. PS: below code works fine, but it clears out the cache completely... i need to clear XMl cache after a specific time period.. please help. var timestamp:Date = new Date(); xmlData.load("/flash/images.xml?cachebuster=" + timestamp.getTime());

    I'm working on a simple XML phonebook app to learn JQuery, and I can't figure out how to do something like this: When the user enters the first name of a contact in a textbox I want to find the entire record of that person. The XML looks like this: <phonebook> <person> <number> 555-5555</number> <first_name>Evelyn</first_name> <last_name>Remington</last_name> <address>Edge of the Abyss</address> <image>path/to/image</image> </person> <person> <number>+34 1 6444 333 2223230</number> <first_name>Max</first_name> <last_name>Muscle</last_name> <address>Mining Belt</address> <image>path/to/image</image> </person> </phonebook> and the best I've been able to do with the jQuery is something like this: var myXML; function searchXML(){ $.ajax({ type:"GET", url: "phonebook.xml", dataType: "xml", success: function(xml){myXML = $("xml").find("#firstNameBox").val())} }); } What I want it to do is return the entire <person> element so I can iterate through and display all that person's information.   • Creating/compling .net data class within an application

    Is there a pattern, Xml structure, architecture technique we can use to create simple data holder class code that we can deserialise to/from and do that at runtime? We're in the early design stage of a .Net project and one of our goals is to make the resulting system extensible through configuration without needing a developer. We need to support new sources of data, typcially delivered as Xml messages. Currently we convert/deserialise the messages into simple classes and then use an already existing language which can manipulate those classes as we need. That works well when you have a developer to map the Xml to simple class, create the class and then write the deserialisation, but it's not extensible for for an administrator. Our target user audience is high end DBA and/or network admin - people who can handle Xml but may not know C#.
