• How to act when you get the last warning? [closed]

  I'm a software developer, currently working on web development. We are a small company a team with 2 persons, a developer and a designer and we have no-one to test our applications. From the last week I was somehow rushed to finish a task within a project programmed by someone else and I released it with a bug which I did not see. Today I got the last warning and if there is a release with a bug I will be fired. So is this fair enough to get fired because releases with bugs without any testers around or should I really improve my skills on testing?

• Finally found a replacement for my.live.com&hellip;

  As I had alluded to before, the transition of http://my.live.com/ to http://my.msn.com/ caused me serious grief. I've been an RSS addict for many, many years and I found the my.live.com UI to be the ultimate RSS reader and gateway to the web. It had been my home page for a long time.  My.msn has a LONG way to go before it matches the elegance and performance of my.live. The site I ended up going with is http://www.netvibes.com/ .   It’s the closest thing I could find that could do four column tiles with a reasonable amount of information density .  I’d still prefer a lot less “chrome” and better use of space, but it’s as close as I’m going to get… One feature I really do like about netvibes, is the pagination feature.  The built in feed reader is also quite nice… All-in-all, I’d recommend netvibes…

• I removed nvidia driver and lshw -c video still shows nvidia

  Today I tried to activate the newer experimental drivers and both 304 and 310 failed to even install. So I tried the regular nvidia driver 295.40 for the 20th time today (I had lag issues and was testing Nouveau vs Nvidia with dual monitor and Unity2D-3D) Within my tty1 I tried to remove nvidia: sudo apt-get remove nvidia-settings nvidia-current and purge too reboot, nothing. So when lshw -c video displayed nvidia as my driver I tried sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf since I read ubuntu would "reset" the GUI conf but reboot, nothing. So next I tried sudo jockey-text --disable=xorg:nvidia_current And nothing has worked...

• Android/Java AI agent framework/middleware

  I am looking for an AI agent framework to use as a starting point in an Android game I have to create for a university research project. It has been suggested to me to use JADE, but, as far as I can tell, it's not a suitable framework for games (at least for my game idea) because it runs in a split-execution mode, and it needs an always-active network connection to a main host. What I want is just a little something to give me a headstart. I am willing to adjust the game's features to the framework because it's more of a mockup game, and the purpose is to compare the performance of a couple of agents in the game world. The game will be very simplistic, with a minimal UI that displays various stats about the characters in the game (so no graphics, no pathfinding). Thank you.

• Keep Google Analytics in a backup site or not?

  I backed up my website and uploaded it to another server for testing and backup purposes. Should I remove the Google Analytics snippet from the index.php (which is for the real site), or does it not matter as it's not the same server and url address as the one declared at Google Analytics account? The reason I don't want to remove it is in case someone forgets about it if they upload the backup to the real site in case the real one breaks. Also I know that if I turn off the website there is no GA snippet, but I need it open so I can easily access and test it so I don't have to write pass all the time.

• Which simple Java JPA ORM tool to use ?

  What Java ORM library implementing JPA that match following criteria would you recommend and why ? free & open source alive (at least bug fixes and a mailing list) with good documentation simple (simpler than hibernate) I need to select a simple ORM tool that can be set up in minutes, without too much configuration and easy to understand, for setting simple CRUD DAOs. A query builder will be an interesting plus. Later I can have to move to Hibernate, that's why being JPA compliant is a must. I have found some candidates on the web, but not so much feedback, so I will gladly take your advices on the topic. ----- EDIT --------- I have been successfully testing ebean/avaje with a small test cases. • The cost of longer delay between development and QA

  At my current position, QA has become a bottleneck. We have had the unfortunate occurence of features being held out of the current build so that QA could finish testing. This means features that are done being developed may not get tested for 2-3 weeks after the developer has already moved on. With dev moving faster thean QA, this time gap is only going to get bigger. I keep flipping through my copy of Code Compelte, looking for a "Hard Data" snippet that shows the cost of fixing defects grows exponentially the longer it exists. Can someone point me to some studies that back up this concept? I am trying to convince the powers that be that the QA bottleneck is a lot more costly than they think.

• Do you believe it's a good idea for Software Engineers to have to work as Quality Assurance Engineers for some period of time?

  I believe it is. Why? I've encountered many Software Engineers who believe they are somehow superior to QA engineers. I think it may help quench this belief if they do the job of a QA engineer for some time, and realize that it is a unique and valuable skill-set of its own. The better a Software Engineer is at testing their own programs, the less cost in time their code incurs when making its way through the rest of the software development life-cycle. The more time a Software Engineer spends thinking about how a program can break, the more often they are to consider these cases as they are developing them, thus reducing bugs in the end product. A Software Engineer's definition of "complete" is always interesting...if they have spent time as a QA engineer maybe this definition will more closely match the designer of the software's. What do you all think?

• AdWords test with two different agencies - can I track their results without them being aware of each other

  Currently going through a process of testing two AdWords ppc providers at the same time from two separate AdWords accounts. However they will require access to my GA account for linking and ecommerce tracking. Which means that they will be able to see each others results. I dont want this; Is it possible to set up GA so that; Company A only sees Adwords results associated to their AdWords management via GA Company B only sees Adwords results associated to their AdWords management via GA And each company never sees the other company's Adwords results? 100 positive karma points to anyone who can shed some light on this. • How could a human factors degree help a computer scientist?

  I'm wrapping up a masters in CS and already have half the credit hours needed for a degree in Human Factors. I just recently discovered how useful understanding about cognition can help someone that creates user interfaces and am thirsty for more knowledge in the area. For me, it seems that having both a masters in Human Factors and CS would be very marketable but would there be jobs out there that would allow me to apply both? Meaning what I would really like to do is take the requirements for some application, apply different Human Factors theories( GOMS, CE+ ) to developing the interface, maybe do cognitive walk through with users to optimize the UI, then develop the application. Do jobs out there exist like this? The reason I ask, is because I'm wondering if most places just want you to be either a Human Factors Expert or a Developer but not both.

  I was always told I was left brained and could not draw. And I bought into that view. Somewhere down the road years ago I did learn to play guitar and to play by ear at that.  Now that’s not all left brained so my right brain must be working.  About a year ago, my good friend Billy Hollis turned me own to a book by Betty Edwards (http://www.drawright.com/).  I started reading this and soon I found my self drawing on napkins in restaurants while we were waiting on food and at many other times too.  Dang’d if I could not draw! • What are the real life implications for an Apache 2 license?

  I want to use SVG Edit for project. This software is distributed under the Apache 2 license. I've seen that: all copies, modified or unmodified, are accompanied by a copy of the licence all modifications are clearly marked as being the work of the modifier all notices of copyright, trademark and patent rights are reproduced accurately in distributed copies the licensee does not use any trademarks that belong to the licensor Do these pertain to the code or should I display the license somewhere in the GUI? The orignal software displays a "powered by SVG Edit", is it ok if I remove this? And most importantly: what is the correct etiquette for doing this? I don't want to be an asshole, but at the same time I want to simplify the UI as much as possible and removing the link will be part of it if it's not considered rude.

• Disable auto-mount for particular partitions on usb drives

  I have a big USB disk with 3 partitions: one for backup and two other bootable ones for installing and testing new distros. I want the backup partition automounted on boot. But I don't want the two test partitions automounted. Despite my use of "noauto" in /etc/fstab, something (gnome?) seems to be mounting them when I plug the drive it. LABEL=mybook /srv/backup ext4 defaults 0 2 LABEL=mybook-root /media/mybook-root ext4 user,noauto 0 2 LABEL=mybook-spare /media/mybook-spare ext4 user,noauto 0 2 In previous Ubuntu distributions it seems that it was possible to configure gnome so it would avoid mounting particular partitions on removable drives like USB: gnome-mount --write-settings --mount-options noauto --device /dev/sda1 This is no longer available in Lucid (when did it go away?) Is there another way to do this now?

• How can I get the business analysts more involved in BDD?

  I am a proponent of Behavior Driven Development, mainly with Cucumber and RSpec, and at my current gig (a Microsoft shop) I am introducing SpecFlow as a tool to help with testing. I'd like to get the business analysts on my team involved in writing the features and scenarios, but they are put off by the "technical" aspect of it, meaning creating the files in Visual Studio (or even having Visual Studio on their machines). They want to know if we can put all the scenarios for a feature in Jira. What I'm looking for is suggestions for a workflow that will work well with BA types that are accustomed to project management/work tracking tools like Jira (we also use Greenhopper).

• NetBeans 6.9 Released

NetBeans IDE 6.9 introduces the JavaFX Composer, a visual layout tool for building JavaFX GUI applications, similar to the Swing GUI builder for Java SE applications. With the JavaFX Composer, developers can quickly build, visually edit, and debug Rich Internet Applications (RIA) and bind components to various data sources, including Web services. The NetBeans 6.9 release also features OSGi interoperability for NetBeans Platform applications and support for developing OSGi bundles with Maven. • What should I use Ubuntu for? [closed]

  I need some of your precious advice co-Ubuntu users. I have been a full Ubuntu user for a few months now and our old 2005 model PC just broke down and so my parents gave me a new PC (notebook). I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate for some reason. Now, my problem is that, since I am a amateur graphic designer, website developer, software developer and other professions a normal teenager won't try and I am using Adobe Creative Suite CS6 Master Collection for my multimedia creation and web development needs, what could I use Ubuntu Linux for? Software development? Website Usability Testing? Other Multimedia stuff? Etc.? Need real help because my mind is getting confused in what should I use Ubuntu for... Any help will be welcomed with appreciation. :D P.S. Don't suggest to me any games because I'm no gamer.

• Export Foxbase database tables to csv

  I have no experience with Foxbase whatsoever and I'm used to working with MySQL via phpmyadmin or interfaces like that. My company has a third party database we're trying to move away from, but we have no support from the company. The database is on our servers, but in a foxbase format. What kind tools do I need to convert these into other formats, or is there any type of admin UI I can tell them to use to export to csv or anything like that? Basically I'm asking how to export the foxbase tables to csv. Sorry if this question isn't clear or you need more information. I will edit with anything else you need.

• Setting Up and Managing Local IPS Repositories

  My colleague, Albert White, has published a useful article detailing how to set up local IPS repositories for use within an enterprise: How to Create Multiple Internal Repositories for Oracle Solaris 11 This is useful as most servers will not be directly connected to the Internet and most customers will want to control which Oracle Solaris SRUs (Support Repository Updates) are "qualified" for deployment within their organization.  Setting up and managing Internal IPS (Image Packaging System) Repositories is the way to do this. The concept can naturally be extended and adapted.  For example, Albert talks about a "Development" Repo containing the latest Oracle Solaris 11 deliverables.  When qualifying a software level for deployment across the enterprise, a copy of a specific level could be taken, e.g. "GoldenImage2012Q3" or "SRU8.5", and once it passes testing, be used to deploy across the enterprise. • Ubuntu 13.04 on Lenovo G580 > built-in (web)cam not recognized

  I've installed Ubuntu 13.04 on a Lenovo G580. Now I noticed that the built-in (web)cam is not being recognized. Does anybody know how to fix this and get the webcam running? Any help is appreciated! Thanks I've downloaded/installed the suggested program and the webcam is working within that program. However, when running Camera Test from the System Testing here's what happens: when clicking on "Test", there's NO image showing up a few seconds after clicking on "Test", an error message is popping up saying "Sorry, Ubuntu 13.04 has experienced an internal error" When going to Skype, video is enable and under "select webcam" there's "Lenovo EasyCamera (/dev/video0) as only option selected. But, Skype doesn't recognize the camera as there's no pictures. Any ideas on how to get this straightened out?
