• Welcome 2011

  Things that happened in 2010 MIX10 was absolutely fantastic. Read my report of MIX10 to see why.   The dotnet Cologne 2010, the community conference organized by the .NET user group Köln and my own group Bonn-to-Code.Net became an even bigger success than I dared to dream of.   There was a huge discrepancy between the efforts by Microsoft to support .NET user groups to organize public live streaming events of the PDC keynote (the dotnet Cologne team joined forces with netug  Niederrhein to organize the PDCologne) and the actual content of the keynote. The reaction of the audience at our event was “meh” and even worse I seriously doubt we’ll ever get that number of people to such an event (which on top of that suffered from technical difficulties beyond our control).   What definitely would have deserved the public live streaming event treatment was the Silverlight Firestarter (aka “Silverlight Damage Control”) event. And maybe we would have thought about organizing something if it weren’t for the “burned earth” left by the PDC keynote. Anyway, the stuff shown at the firestarter keynote was the topic of conversations among colleagues days later (“did you see that? oh yeah, that was seriously cool”). Things that I have learned/observed/noticed in 2010 In the long run, there’s a huge difference between “It works pretty well” and “it just works and I never have to think about it”. I had to get rid of my USB graphics adapter powering the third monitor (read about it in this blog post). Various small issues (desktop icons sometimes moving their positions after a reboot for no apparent reasons, at least one game I couldn’t get run at all, all three monitors sometimes simply refusing to wake up after standby) finally made me buy a PCIe 1x graphics adapter. If you’re interested: The combination of a NVIDIA GTX 460 and a GT 220 is running in “don’t make me think” mode for a couple of months now.   PowerPoint 2010 is a seriously cool piece of software. Not only the new hardware-accelerated effects, but also features like built-in background removal and picture processing (which in many cases are simply “good enough” and save a lot of time) or the smart guides.   Outlook 2010 crashes on me a lot. I haven’t been successful in reproducing these crashes, they just happen when every couple of days on different occasions (only thing in common: I clicked something in the main window – yeah, very helpful observation)   Visual Studio 2010 reminds me of Visual Studio 2005 before SP1, which is actually not a good thing to say about a piece of software. I think it’s telling that Microsoft’s message regarding the beta of SP1 has been different from earlier service pack betas (promising an upgrade path for a beta to the RTM sounds to me like “please, please use it NOW!”).   I have a love/hate relationship with ReSharper. I don’t want to develop without it, but at the same time I can’t fail to notice that ReSharper is taking a heavy toll in terms of performance and sometimes stability. Things I’m looking forward to in 2011 Obviously, the dotnet Cologne 2011. We already have been able to score some big name sponsors (Microsoft, Intel), but we’re still looking for more sponsors. And be assured that we’ll make sure that our partners get the most out of their contribution, regardless of how big or small.   MIX11, period.    Silverlight 5 is going to be great. The only thing I’m a bit nervous about is that I still haven’t read anything official on whether C# next version’s async/await will be in it. Leaving that out would be really stupid considering the end-of-2011 release of SL5 (moving the next release way into the future).

• BlueTooth not working on my HP Probook 4720s

  the blue tooth on my ubuntu 11.10 does not work. When i try to ad a device it scans indefinitely and never find anything. Wireless is working perfeclty and with windows 7 it is detected. As i read somewhere , the bluetooth is not listed in the usb devices. • InfiniBand Enabled Diskless PXE Boot

  When you want to bring up a compute server in your environment and need InfiniBand connectivity, usually you go through various installation steps. This could involve operating systems like Linux, followed by a compatible InfiniBand software distribution, associated dependencies and configurations. What if you just want to run some InfiniBand diagnostics or troubleshooting tools from a test machine ? What if something happened to your primary machine and while recovering in rescue mode, you also need access to your InfiniBand network ? Often times we use opensource community supported small Linux distributions but they don't come with required InfiniBand support and tools. In this weblog, I am going to provide instructions on how to add InfniBand support to a specific Linux image - Parted Magic.This is a free to use opensource Linux distro often used to recover or rescue machines. The distribution itself will not be changed at all. Yes, you heard it right ! I have built an InfiniBand Add-on package that will be passed to the default kernel and initrd to get this all working. Pr-requisites You will need to have have a PXE server ready on your ethernet based network. The compute server you are trying to PXE boot should have a compatible IB HCA and must be connected to an active IB network. Required Downloads Download the Parted Magic small distribution for PXE from Parted Magic website. Download InfiniBand PXE Add On package. Right Click and Download from here. Do not extract contents of this file. You need to use it as is. Prepare PXE Server Extract the contents of downloaded pmagic distribution into a temporary directory. Inside the directory structure, you will see pmagic directory containing two files - bzImage and initrd.img. Copy this directory in your TFTP server's root directory. This is usually /tftpboot unless you have a different setup. For Example: cp pmagic_pxe_2012_2_27_x86_64.zip /tmp cd /tmp unzip pmagic_pxe_2012_2_27_x86_64.zip cd pmagic_pxe_2012_2_27_x86_64 # ls -l total 12 drwxr-xr-x  3 root root 4096 Feb 27 15:48 boot drwxr-xr-x  2 root root 4096 Mar 17 22:19 pmagic cp -r pmagic /tftpboot As I mentioned earlier, we dont change anything to the default pmagic distro. Simply provide the add-on package via PXE append options. If you are using a menu based PXE server, then add an entry to your menu. For example /tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/default can be appended with following section. LABEL Diskless Boot With InfiniBand Support MENU LABEL Diskless Boot With InfiniBand Support KERNEL pmagic/bzImage APPEND initrd=pmagic/initrd.img,pmagic/ib-pxe-addon.cgz edd=off load_ramdisk=1 prompt_ramdisk=0 rw vga=normal loglevel=9 max_loop=256 TEXT HELP * A Linux Image which can be used to PXE Boot w/ IB tools ENDTEXT Note: Keep the line starting with "APPEND" as a single line. If you use host specific files in pxelinux.cfg, then you can use that specific file to add the above mentioned entry. Boot Computer over PXE Now boot your desired compute machine over PXE. This does not have to be over InfiniBand. Just use your standard ethernet interface and network. If using menus, then pick the new entry that you created in previous section. Enable IPoIB After a few minutes, you will be booted into Parted Magic environment. Open a terminal session and see if InfiniBand is enabled. You can use commands like: ifconfig -a ibstat ibv_devices ibv_devinfo If you are connected to InfiniBand network with an active Subnet Manager, then your IB interfaces must have come online by now. You can proceed and assign IP address to them. This will enable you at IPoIB layer. Example InfiniBand Diagnostic Tools I have added several InfiniBand Diagnistic tools in this add-on. You can use from following list: ibstat, ibstatus, ibv_devinfo, ibv_devices perfquery, smpquery ibnetdiscover, iblinkinfo.pl ibhosts, ibswitches, ibnodes Wrap Up This concludes this weblog. • Remove Ubuntu or XP from the Windows 7 Boot Menu

  If you’ve ever used a dual-boot system and then removed one of the operating systems, it can still show up in Windows 7’s boot menu. We’ll show you how to get rid of old entries and speed up the boot process. To edit the boot menu, we will use a program called bcdedit that’s included with Windows 7. There are some third-party graphical applications that will edit the menu, but we prefer to use built-in applications when we can. First, we need to open a command prompt with Administrator privileges. Open the start menu and type cmd into the search box. Right click on the cmd program that shows up, and select Run as administrator. Alternatively, if you’ve disabled the search box, you can find the command prompt in All Programs > Accessories. In the command prompt, type in bcdedit and press enter. A list of the boot menu entries will appear. Find the entry that you would like to delete – in our case, this is the last one, with the description of “Ubuntu”. What we need is the long sequence of characters marked as the identifier. Rather than type it out, we will copy it to be pasted later. Right-click somewhere in the command prompt window and select Mark. By clicking the left mouse button and dragging over the appropriate text, select the identifier for the entry you want to delete, including the left and right curly braces on either end. Press the Enter button. This will copy the text to the clipboard. In the command prompt, type in: bcdedit /delete and then right-click somewhere in the command prompt window and select Paste. Press Enter to input the now completed command. The boot menu entry will now be deleted. Type in bcdedit again to confirm that the offending entry is now gone from the list. If you reboot your machine now, you will notice that the boot menu does not even come up, because there is only one entry in the list (unless you had more than two entries to begin with). You’ve shaved a few seconds off of the boot process! Not to mention the added effort of pressing the enter button. There’s a lot more that you can do with bcdedit, like change the description of boot menu entries, create new entries, and much more. For a list of what you can do with bcdedit, type the following into the Command Window. bcdedit /help While there are third-party GUI solutions for accomplishing the same thing, using this method will save you time by not having to go through the extra steps of installing an extra program. • Laptop screen blank after login when external monitor is not connected

  Ubuntu does not switch back automatically to only monitor present when booting after disconnecting external monitor. Here's a video showing what happens. I get to the login window and everything looks ok, then I type my password, the desktop image shows up and... everything goes blank. It does not happen when I just login as a guest. When possible I work with my laptop connected to an external screen via the VGA port. The problem comes when I boot the computer without that secondary screen connected: The login screen comes out ok. After login the screen goes black, but I can hear the login sound. If I hit ctr + alt + backwards-delete and login again sometimes it is fixed, but not all. If I log in as a different user everything is OK. Then I log in as my user and sometimes it works. To have a screen I have to plug a monitor. Although I have turned on the laptop display with that monitor on, if I reboot it goes blank again after login, even if I turn off the external monitor before turning off the computer. I've managed to get my screen back with my username after going into recovery mode, but only sometimes. Failsafe would not load after second screen asking me what I wanted to do (no mouse to click nor keyboard working). My computer is a LDLC Aurore BB1-i5 -8 -S1. Which is the configuration file that keeps the information about the monitors using Displays under lightgdm and where is it? I guess if I could edit it I may have a chance :) One of the things I tried following a solution in another post was removing my monitors.xml file, but it does not work and I don't know how to create a good one that I could use now. When doing DISPLAY=:0 xrandrI get: Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 320 x 200, maximum 8192 x 8192 LVDS1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 1366x768 60.0 + 1360x768 59.8 60.0 1024x768 60.0 800x600 60.3 56.2 640x480 59.9 VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) HDMI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) DP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) This is the full dmesg after activating sudo xdiagnoseas Bryce sugested. (If you tell me the relevant parts I will paste them here) When conecting the external monitor, only the external will work, although I can see using Displays that the computer thinks that both are working. I've asked the question in Launchpad but have it keeps on expiring without any feedback. In my opinion Ubuntu should be able to detect automatically that there is no external monitor present and switch to the laptop monitor. There's a similar question here, but it does not apply to my case External monitor set as primary even when disconnected from laptop Update: For clarification, the problem happens only with my user and once I log in. I even get to see the screensaver for about a second, and then it goes blank. Tried Bryce's example (see his answer below), but it did not work. • What packages do I need to compile .tex documents using XeLaTeX?

  Hi I'm aware of the existence of similar threads on this forum. But any of replies mach to my problem. I'm using Ubuntu 10.4 and I hadn't problems with fonts till I've decided to use XeLaTeX instead of LaTeX (cf http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/12347/typesetting-a-document-using-arabic-script/12358#12358). The problem is that I'm not able to compile any .tex document using XeLaTeX, as well as properly display XeLaTeX documentation. As I've learn thanks to mentioned thread, XeLaTeX uses the fonts availables in general in the system. I was trying yo read fontspec documentation, but it opens in pdf with a lot of white gaps and terminal output (quite long) consist mostly of errors. • Part 9: EBS Customizations, how to track

  In the previous blogs we were concentrating on the preparation tasks. We have defined standards, we know about the tools and techniques we will start with. Additionally, we have defined the modification strategy, and how to handle such topics best. Now we are ready to take the requirements! Such requirements coming over in spreadsheets, word files (like GAP documents), or in any other format. As we have to assign some attributes, we start numbering all that and assign a short name to each of these requirements (=CEMLI reference). We may also have already a Functional person assigned, and we might involve someone from the tech team to estimate, and we like to assign a status such as 'planned', 'estimated' etc. All these data are usually kept in spreadsheets, but I would put them into a database (yes, I am from Oracle :). If you don't have any good looking and centralized application already, please give a try with Oracle APEX. It should be up and running in a day and the imported sheets are than manageable concurrently!  For one of my clients I have created this CEMLI-DB; in between enriched with a lot of additional functionality, but initially it was just a simple centralized CEMLI tracking application. Why I am pointing out again the centralized method to manage such data? Well, your data quality will dramatically increase, if you let your project members see (also review and update) "your" data.  APEX allows you to filter, sort, print, and also export. And if you can spend some time to define proper value lists, everyone will gain from. APEX allows you to work in 'agile' mode, means you can improve your application step by step. Let's say you like to reference a document, or even upload the same, you can do that. Or, you need to classify the CEMLIs by release, just add this release field, same for business area or CEMLI type. One CEMLI record may then look like this: Prepare one or two (online) reports, to be ready to present your "workload" to the project management. Use such extracts also when you work offline (to prioritize etc.). But as soon as you are again connected, feed the data back into the central application. Note: I have combined this application with an additional issue tracker.  Here the most important element is the CEMLI reference, which acts as link to any other application (if you are not using APEX also as issue tracker :).  Please spend a minute to define such a reference (see blog Part 8: How to name Customizations).   Summary: Building the bridge from Gap analyse to the development has to be done in a controlled way. Usually the information is provided differently, but it is suggested to collect all requirements centrally. Oracle APEX is a great solution to enter and maintain such information in a structured, but flexible way. APEX helped me a lot to work with distributed development teams during the complete development cycle.

• Recover Lost Form Data in Firefox

  Have you ever filled in a text area or form in a webpage and something happens before you can finish it? If you like the idea of recovering that lost data then you will want to have a look at the Lazarus: Form Recovery extension for Firefox. Lazarus: Form Recovery in Action For our first example we chose the comment text box area for one of the articles here at the website. As you can see we were not finished typing in the whole comment yet… Notice the “Lazarus Icon” in the lower right corner. Note: We simulated accidental tab closures for our two examples. After getting our webpage opened up again all of our text was gone. Right clicking within the text area showed two options available…”Recover Text & Recover Form”. Notice that our lost text was listed as a “sub menu”…this could be extremely useful in matching up the appropriate text to the correct webpage if you had multiple tabs open before something happened. Click on the correct text listing to insert it. So easy to finish writing our comment without having to start from zero again. In our second example we chose the sign-up form page for the website. As before we were not finished filling in the form… Getting the webpage opened back up showed the same problem as before…all the entered text was lost. This time we right clicked in the browser window area and there was that wonderful “Recover Form Command” waiting to be used. One click and… All of our lost form data was back and we were able to finish filling in the form. For those who may be interested you can disable Lazarus: Form Recovery on individual websites using the “Context Menu” for the “Status Bar Icon” Options There are three sections in the options and you should take a quick look through them to make any desired modifications in how Lazarus: Form Recovery functions. The first “Options Area” focuses on display/access for the extension. The second “Options Area” allows you to expand the type of data retained, enable removal of data within a given time frame, set up a password, disable search indexing, and enable form data retention while in “Private Browsing Mode”. The third “Options Area” focuses on the Lazarus database itself. Conclusion If you have ever lost text area or form data before then you know how much time could be lost in starting over. Lazarus: Form Recovery helps provide a nice backup solution to get you up and running once again with a minimum of effort. • Microsoft Ergonomic 7000 keyboard + mouse lag

  I recently bought a new Microsoft Ergonomic 7000 keyboard. I started to use it with my Ubuntu 12.04 and it lags all the time. I try to be more specific: Even on a minor CPU usage the mouse lags. By minor I mean firefox loading a webpage, or opening an application like conky, gnome-terminal etc. When higher CPU usage occurs the keyboard is lagging too, but by this I mean it misses my hits, so what I type won't appear later. What I tried so far (and did not work)? Disable autosuspend (echo -1 to sys/bus/usb.../autosuspend) and at the same place set level to "on". I have tried several video drivers: Vesa, radeon, newest catalyst (and catalyst beta too) When my keyboard and/or mouse lags I tried an other USB keyboard which works perfectly and the same for the mouse. I tried the keyboard and mouse on a different computer with Linux (Ubuntu, Arch, OpenSuse) too, the same problem appears but not on Windows. I tried to replace the battery sets, and to change channel on the dongle. And also tried to use the dongle from other USB ports. On the same time I am able to use any other wireless mouse. I changed the XkbModel to "microsoft7000" but it did not solve anything. • Two small issues with Windows Phone 7 ApplicationBar buttons (and workaround)

  When you work with the ApplicationBar in Windows Phone 7, you notice very fast that it is not quite a component like the others. For example, the ApplicationBarIconButton element is not a dependency object, which causes issues because it is not possible to add attached properties to it. Here are two other issues I stumbled upon, and what workaround I used to make it work anyway. Finding a button by name returns null Since the ApplicationBar is not in the tree of the Silverlight page, finding an element by name fails. For example consider the following code: <phoneNavigation:PhoneApplicationPage.ApplicationBar> <shell:ApplicationBar> <shell:ApplicationBar.Buttons> <shell:ApplicationBarIconButton IconUri="/Resources/edit.png" Click="EditButtonClick" x:Name="EditButton"/> <shell:ApplicationBarIconButton IconUri="/Resources/cancel.png" Click="CancelButtonClick" x:Name="CancelButton"/> </shell:ApplicationBar.Buttons> </shell:ApplicationBar> </phoneNavigation:PhoneApplicationPage.ApplicationBar> with private void EditButtonClick( object sender, EventArgs e) { CancelButton.IsEnabled = false; // Fails, CancelButton is always null } The CancelButton, even though it is named through an x:Name attribute, and even though it appears in Intellisense in the code behind, is null when it is needed. To solve the issue, I use the following code: public enum IconButton { Edit = 0, Cancel = 1 } public ApplicationBarIconButton GetButton( IconButton which) { return ApplicationBar.Buttons[(int) which] as ApplicationBarIconButton; } private void EditButtonClick( object sender, EventArgs e) { GetButton(IconButton.Cancel).IsEnabled = false; } Updating a Binding when the icon button is clicked In Silverlight, a Binding on a TextBox’s Text property can only be updated in two circumstances: When the TextBox loses the focus. Explicitly by placing a call in code. In WPF, there is a third option, updating the Binding every time that the Text property changes (i.e. every time that the user types a character). Unfortunately this option is not available in Silverlight). To select option 1, 2 (and in WPF, 3), you use the Mode property of the Binding class. The issue here is that pressing a button on the ApplicationBar does not remove the focus from the TextBox where the user is currently typing. If the button is a Save button, this is super annoying: The Binding does not get updated on the data object, the object is saved anyway with the old state, and noone understands what just happened. In order to solve this, you can make sure that the Binding is updated explicitly when the button is pressed, with the following code: private void SaveButtonClick(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Force update binding first var binding = MessageTextBox.GetBindingExpression( TextBox.TextProperty); binding.UpdateSource(); // Property was updated for sure, now we can save var vm = DataContext as MainViewModel; vm.Save(); } Obviously this is less maintainable than the usual way to do things in Silverlight. So be careful when using the ApplicationBar and remember that it is not a Silverlight element like the others!! Happy coding! • JDeveloper 11g R1 (11.1.1.4.0) - New Features on ADF Desktop Integration Explained

  One of the areas that introduced many new features on the latest release (11.1.1.4.0)  of JDeveloper 11g R1 is ADF Desktop integration - in this article I’ll provide an overview of these new features. New ADF Desktop Integration Ribbon in Excel - After installing the ADF desktop integration add-in and depending on the mode in which you open the desktop integration workbook, the ADF Desktop integration ribbon for design time and runtime are displayed as a separate tab within Excel. In previous version the ADF Desktop integration environment used to be placed inside the add-ins tab. Above you can see both, design time ribbon as well as runtime ribbon. On the design time ribbon you can manage the workbook and worksheet properties, worksheet component properties, diagnostics, execution and publication of the workbook. The runtime version of the ribbon is totally customizable and represents what it used to be the runtime menu on the spreadsheet, in this ribbon you can include all the operations and actions that could be executed by the end user while working with the spreadsheet data. Diagnostics - A very important aspect for developers is how to debug or verify the interactions of the client with the server, for that ADF desktop integration has provided since day one a series of diagnostics tools. In this release the diagnostics tools are more visible and are really easy to configure. You can access the client console while testing the workbook, or you can simple dump all the messages to a log file – having the ability of setting the output level for both. Security - There are a number of enhancements on security but the one with more impact for developers is tha security now is optional when using ADF Desktop Integration. Until this version every time that you wanted to work with ADFdi it was a must that the application was previously secured. In this release security is optional which means that if you have previously defined security on your application, then you must secure the ADFdi servlet as explained in one of my previous (ADD LINK) posts. In the other hand, if but the time that you start working with ADFdi you have not defined security, you can test and publish your workbooks without adding security. Support for Continuous Integration - In this release we have added tooling for continuous integration building. in the ADF desktop integration space, the concept translates to adding functionality that developers can use to publish ADFdi workbooks as part of their entire application build. For that purpose, we have a publish tool that can be easily invoke from an ANT task such that all the design time workbooks are re-published into the latest version of the application building process. Key Column - At runtime, on any worksheet containing editable tables you will notice a new additional column called the key column. The purpose of this column is to make the end user aware that all rows on the table need to be selected at the time of sorting. The users cannot alter the value of this column. From the developers points of view there are no steps required in order to have the key column included into the worksheets. Installation and Creation of New Workbooks - Both use cases can be executed now directly from JDeveloper. As part of the Tools menu options the developer can install the ADF desktop integration designer. Also, creating new workbooks that previously was done through that convert tool shipped with JDeveloper is now automatic done from the New Gallery. Creating a new ADFdi workbook adds metadata information information to the Excel workbook so you can work in design time. Other Enhancements Support for Excel 2010 and the ADF components ready-only enabled don’t allow to change its value – the cell in Excel is automatically protected, this could cause confusion among customers of previous releases.

• Install lubuntu 12.04 on an old Dell c600 : Video issues

  I am trying to install lubuntu on an old laptop. I use the 386 alternate instalation of it, because it has only 256mb ... All when ok so when I start up the lubuntu the screen splits between 1024x768 and 800x600... its very horrible to use =). Ok I do this: lspci and found an ATI Rage mobility M3. 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility M3 AGP 2x (rev 02) So I tryied the old xorg way to edit the missing resolution, but it does not work:... • No sound lenovo t60 alsa ad1981 iec958

  Any help on getting the sound to come through my lenovo t60 build in speakers, headphones, or mic would greatly be appreciated. The three buttons to increase, decrease sound seem to work. Bios has sound card enabled and the buttons beep when pressed. When going to Utube or playing music, no sound is heard. • Realtek RTL8111/8168B wired network doesn't work anymore

  This sounds like it's a common problem upgrading 11.04, but I am having trouble finding a common solution, and one that will work for me. I just applied updates via the update manager and now my wired network connection is down. I know Ubuntu network settings is the issue, because I have a dual-boot with Win 7 and my network/internet is fine on Win 7. I don't know too much about networking, so what can I do to trouble shoot this issue? I can choose an older grub version, 2.6.38-8 instead of 2.6.38-11 and this does not resolve the issue. • Tweaking Remote Control (In-Kernel LIRC)

  I've recently rebuilt my MythTV box using Mythbuntu 12.04, to take advantage of newer hardware (Ivy Bridge). On my previous build I used lirc to manage the remote, i.e. the mapping of key codes - keypresses - application keys; it was quite a journey to learn it all, and I ended up fairly comfortable with how it all worked. What I have: I have a cheap Chinavasion remote and USB dongle, which I've found several articles on; these largely revolve around working with XBMC (interesting, but I don't think directly applicable) and also around getting a Harmony remote to work (it's a Chinavasion CVSB-983 - very useful, since I needed this to get my Harmony 900 working). Mythbuntu 12.04 64-bit MythTV 0.25 (likely irrelevant) How it is right now When I plug this in, it 'just works'. Which is great, except that Ubuntu uses it natively, and prevents some of the button presses from getting through to Myth. For example, I can send a button from the remote that equates to Ctrl-Alt-A (which I assume Ubuntu isn't interested in), and then trap that in Mythfrontend, but the remote's Play button is caught by Ubuntu (which displays a large circle with a line though it, as there's no media player loaded). I understand that this is because lirc is merged into the kernel now, and I like that. I would really like to do this with the in-kernel drivers, i.e. without explicitly loading lirc; if that's the way the world is going, I'd rather find a way to map the current behaviour to what I want, rather than forcing the 'old' arrangement of loading lirc outside the kernel. Learning something new is also worthwhile! My guess: I'm assuming that this will require using setkeycodes, but have had trouble finding enough information to configure this. • Wireless is detected, but not connecting. Ethernet works. How to correct the wireless address?

  I am running Ubuntu 14.04 with cable internet, and my wireless is detected and connected, but I cannot connect to the internet. I know the problem is with my machine because other machines are connecting to the same router just fine. I can connect via ethernet just fine as well. Here are some notable tests: ping 192.168.0.105 works with 0% packet loss, but ping 192.168.0.1 has 100% packet loss. When I plug in my ethernet, ping 192.168.0.1 works with 0% packet loss. My wireless name is tg, and the router ip is 192.168.0.1 (where I can enter username and password). I suspect that I need to change my wireless address from 192.168.0.105 to 192.168.0.1. • Handy SQL Server Functions Series (HSSFS) Part 2.0 - Prelude to Parsing Patterns Properly

  In Part 1 of the series I wrote about 2 lesser-known and somewhat undocumented functions. In this part, I'm going to cover some familiar string functions like Substring(), Parsename(), Patindex(), and Charindex() and delve into their strengths and weaknesses. I'm also splitting this part up into sub-parts to help focus on a particular technique and/or problem with the technique, hence the Part 2.0. Consider this a composite post, or com-post, if you will. (It may just turn out to be a pile of sh_t after all) I'll be using a contrived example, perhaps the most frustratingly useful, or usefully frustrating, function in SQL Server: @@VERSION. Contrived, because there are better ways to get the information (which I'll cover later); frustrating, because of the way Microsoft formatted the value; and useful because it does have 1 or 2 bits of information not found elsewhere. First let's take a look at the output of @@VERSION: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1600.1 (Intel X86) Apr 2 2010 15:53:02 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Developer Edition on Windows NT 5.1 <X86> (Build 2600: Service Pack 3) There are 4 lines, with lines 2-4 indented with a tab character.  In case your browser (or this blog software) doesn't show it correctly, I gave each line a different color.  While this PRINTs nicely, if you SELECT @@VERSION in grid mode it all runs together because it ignores carriage return/line feed (CR/LF) characters.  Not fatal, but annoying. Note that @@VERSION's output will vary depending on edition and version of SQL Server, and also the OS it's installed on.  Despite the differences, the output is laid out the same way and the relevant pieces are in the same order. • Laptop monitor stopped working and can't be re-enabled on a Dell Latitude E6410

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 (upgraded from 11.10), everything seemed to work fine until today when my laptop monitor suddenly stopped working. Here are the facts: My laptop is a Dell Latitude E6410, Intel graphics. External Monitor is attached through a docking station. Everything worked fine for about 6-7 month, then upgraded to 12.04 Issue started today after a week of upgrade. I think the issue started after I ran CounterStrike 1.6, both monitors blinked and then only the attached monitor which is connected to a docking station continued to work I thought at first that was a transient issue but then I've rebooted, removed the battery but the same happens. Regards, ============================= WORKAROUND FOUND ============================= So I have tried few things and here is what worked: I've installed a newer version of xserver-xorg-video-intel (2.19 vs 2.17) from ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa, it didn't work at first, it was only showing low graphics mode, so I tried with a different linux-image 3.0.0-19-generic-pae instead of 3.2.0-24-generic-pae, which I believe is 12.04 precise default, then everything started to work again, Now I've installed 3.4.0-1-generic-pae from same ppa and everything goes flawless so I believe the issue is either with linux-image 3.0.0-19-generic-pae or xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.17. Hope this helps someone in the future.
