• Ubuntu 12.10 64bit host reboots when trying to install any guest system using VirtualBox

  I am having a really nasty problem with VirtualBox as everytime I try to install any guest OS(using ISO file as CD for installation media), the installation starts normally but as soon as it is about to start either installing to virtual hard drive or loading(e.g. as LiveFS) it causes the host system to reboot abruptly. Config is as below: Host system: Ubuntu 12.10 64bit - Intel® Core i7-2640M CPU @ 2.80GHz × 4 Virtualbox version: 4.1.18_Ubuntu r78361 Guest OS systems tried: 32bit version of FreeBSD 9, Debian 6, Tails 0.14 VM setup Tried to have the minimal setup necessary just in case it would avoid for each system to make sure I'd avoid conflicts, but to no avail. I've tried different values and combinations of the below but the problem still persists: Shared Clipboard: Disabled Show in fullscreen/seamless: Disabled Remember runtime changes: DIsabled Base Memory: 2048 MB Chipset: PIIX3 IO APIC: Disabled EFI: Disabled Absolute Pointing device: Disabled Processor(s): 1 CPU PAE/NX: Disabled VT-x/AMD-V: Disabled Video Memory: 12 MB 3d/2d acceleration: Disabled Storage IDE COntroller: PIIX3 (same as chipset instead of PIIX4) Use host I/O cache: No Audio: disabled Network adapter: NAT USB controller: disabled No shared folder Also another sideeffect of the reboot is that it appears that it does not log any information in the error log files; not making things any easier. Please help.

• Windows freezes when watching videos

  I have Acer laptop Aspire 5740 - 5780 with windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. I am using Chrome. Windows is 1 year old, but it's not the first time this has happened. Windows freezes whenever I am watching videos on facebook/youtube or when using SopCast. I thought there was some faulty plugin, so I recently re-installed chrome but it happened again. No keys work, and the sound of whatever I am listening starts repeating like grrrr..drrrr. Its seems like the sound in very slow motion. One time I left it in this freeze state for 5 min and it recovered automatically. It usually does not happen when I am using windows media player. I had some codecs installed but I removed them to see if that fixes. So far, I have narrowed it down to youtube/footytube videos and sopcast. I have checked event logs but nothing special. Is there any way I can narrow down the problem or any suggestions on how to fix it. I'd like to add that it does not always happen. Sometimes windows goes days/weeks without freezing, and sometimes it take a min into video to freeze.

• Flickering dual screens in Virtual Box Ubuntu 13.10 Guest

  I have Ubuntu 13.10 x64 installed as a guest in VirtualBox (under a Windows 8.1 host) and have the settings for the virtual machine setup to run with a monitor count of 2, 128MB video memory and 3D acceleration enabled. In my guest I have the virtual box additions installed (which allowed me to have two 1920x1080 screens). Here's a screenshot of my VM settings. My laptop is an Asus N550JV which has both Intel's HD Graphics 4600 GPU and Nvidia's GeForce GT 750M. By default though I believe the Intel GFX card is being used to render the VM. When I boot up the VM it loads perfectly on dual screens, however whenever I move the mouse from one screen to the other (I have a Dell S2340L running over a HDMI connection as a second screen) the screen flickers. I've tried a variety of settings changes in both Ubuntu and the VM settings, but cannot seem to stop this screen flicker. I also used the NVidia control panel in Windows to force the dedicated graphics card to always be used but found that the display driver sometimes crashed whilst working in the VM, resulting in my VM session being destroyed, so I figured it's better to stick with the Intel GFX as that appears to be more stable. I also tried without 3D acceleration but that was much worse, and if I ran the VM with a low amount of graphics memory it really struggled. I read some posts suggesting changes to /etc/X11/xorg.conf but I don't appear to have an xorg.conf file. There were also a few posts (though related to Synergy) suggesting running xset -dpms but this command doesn't appear to have had any effect for me. As an additional note, I'm finding that window drawing in the guest is a little laggy/glitchy. For example, quickly scrolling through a web page may result in parts of the viewport displaying original content. Certainly I notice drawing issues most in the web browser, but it also impacts other software with parts of the window not being drawn when, say, switching between accounts in thunderbird. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

• No sound Ubuntu 10.10 (have SB Live! card)

  I am new to Linux/Ubuntu and I just installed 10.10 on my Dell Desktop PC that was running Windows XP. The PC is about 5-6 years old and the sound card it has is a SoundBlaster Live! card. The Sound Preferences recognizes the card as [SB Live! Value] EMU10k1X. It is currently set to Analog Stereo Duplex. I tried multiple other sound configurations and nothing works. No sound but some clicks come out of the speakers. I ran the system test and during the audio tests the same thing happened, just clicks and pops. I tried to play some music with Rhythmbox and when it tries to play a track it tries for several seconds and then just closes itself, or sometimes just doesn't play. I ran a check for drivers, but the only driver it found to install was for my nVidia video card. It did not show any drivers for the sound card. Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to get the sound to work?

• Problem mirroring two monitors with different resolution

  Hello I am trying to put two monitors in mirror mode (Windows 7 Professional) with Ultramon 3.1.0. The two monitors: Main monitor: 24" Asus. 1680x1050 resolution (16/10). Secondary monitor: 19" LG. 1280x1024 resolution. The graphic card is a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT. I have installed the Ultramon 3.1.0 and I have created a mirror, with the "stretch mirror image to fill monitor" and the "disable video overlays and 3D acceleration". When I start the mirroring, there are two zones in the lateral edges that are not displayed in the second monitor. I think this is because the width of the main monitor is 1680 px. and the width of the secondary monitor is 1280 px., but I have indicated "stretch mirror image to fill monitor" in the options. The same occurs in the top and the bottom edges, but the diference is minimal (1050 vs 1024 pixels). I want the same image (distortioned in the secondary monitor if is neccesary), but I don't know what is failing. Someone can help me, please? I have read Mirrored monitors of different resolution. • DVI splitter not working as expected/confusion between DVI-D and -I

  Hey guys, thanks for looking. I have an ATI FirePro™ V3700 in my desktop machine, and I have been running a dual-monitor setup quite effortlessly, thanks to the two DVI ports on the card. I came upon a third monitor, and wanted to extend my desktop to 3 screens, so I purchased a DVI splitter from Amazon. Now, I can only duplicate the second monitor onto the third, not extend it. I've tried all possible combinations of input to no avail. Here's the setup: The ATI FirePro™ V3700 has two Dual-Link DVI-I outputs The splitter splits a single Dual-Link DVI-I port into two Dual-Link DVI-I outputs Two of the monitors are NEC E222W, and the third monitor is a Dell 2001FP. Each monitor has one D-Sub and one Dual-Link DVI-D input. Cables going from the video card to the monitors are two Dual-Link DVI-D to the NECs and one Single-Link DVI-D to the Dell. Is the problem likely with the DVI-D/DVI-I mismatch? Or is it with the cable on the Dell that is only a Single-Link? The cables are easily replaceable, the monitors not so much. • How I can recover files when the folder shows empty but the files are not deleted?

  Yesterday, my laptop caught a virus which caused massive damage. Since them, I have been trying to recover important files before reformatting my computer, a task the virus has not made easy. Restoration points predating the attack have been deleted. Most of my folders show empty. My Start menu is essentially empty, with the exception of Trillian and Mirror's Edge. The same goes for my Desktop, which only has programs which were installed after the attack. Searching for files though my computer is pretty much useless, as it only rarely brings up anything. I suspect most of my files have not been deleted. While my folders show empty, uTorrent still does display them and I can open them from here. Unfortunately, when I select Open Containing Folder, the folder still shows as completely empty even if I'm currently watching a video from that very folder. Further adding evidence to the not-deleted, just-missing theory, the data recovery software I'm using (Restoration) cannot find only find an handful of the missing files. If they were deleted, I could do a forensic recovery to get them back but since they're probably still somewhere on my computer, just out out of my reach, I can't find them. Under those circumstances, is there a way I can recover those files?

• How to make a Windows Vista boot / recovery cd from a running system without using an original CD / DVD

  I have just repaired a friends computer (replaced motherboard) and now I am trying to repair the Windows (Windows Vista) partitions. Unfortunately, probably due to the fact that he tried to start it several times after the old motherboard had stopped working (no signal on video) now the partition table or the file systems (or both?) appear to be damaged. I managed to boot Windows a couple of times but could not complete the boot. I tried to repair the partition table and file systems using Linux RIP (booting from USB stick) but the Linux utilities say that the file system is damaged and I should run chkdsk /f from Windows. So I now need a Windows boot CD from which I can boot and run chkdsk or any other Windows utilities that can repair the file system. Is there an easy way to create such a CD? Or can I download it for free somewhere? All the links to Windows Vista boot / repair CD's I have found on the internet refer to non-free stuff. Any hint? EDIT I have a working laptop with Windows Vista installed. So one solution would be to make a bootable CD or USB from it so that I can boot the desktop and run the repair utilities. However, I do not have the Windows Vista installation DVD, because both computers were bought with Windows pre-installed.

• HP EliteBook 8440P - USB ports stop working on docking station

  I have a HP Elitebook 8440P running Windows XP Pro SP3. I installed it on my docking station and everything went smooth for a while. Last week, my mouse and any other USB devices stoped working sudenly... It was working fine on my laptop itself but nothing on my docking station. LCD attached monitor works and same for LAN and PS2 keyboard. I updated the BIOS, Chipset, Video Drivers, also changed my docking station by a brand new one but the problem still comes back. I also noticed something in Device Manager... A Generic USB Root Hub has an error on it, a Yellow/Orange exclamation mark. I tried to update that driver but no luck. Windows is unable to process it. This seems to be the problem but can't fix it. I may only re-image my laptop but for me, I need to avoid that since I have so many apps installed on it. If anybody has any advice, I'll take it!

• Automatic o/s reset on a dedicated internet browsing Windows 7 pc.

  I have just purchased a new Acer Revo nettop PC for dedicated internet browsing. It will be the only pc on a home network. My original plan was to install one virtual PC for family browsing, another for remote web based server administration and ban browser use from the host Windows 7 o/s. The idea was that I could recover to a fresh VHD image once a week to eliminate any build up of malware inside the browser VMs. However now I am looking for alternative solutions since the Intel Atom cpu does not have hardware VT support which Windows Virtual PC requires. Would it be possible to engineer some type of routine overnight host o/s wipe and recovery? I guess cyber cafes do something like this? The only user data that would need to be retained across a recovery would be browser bookmarks but these could be exported to remote service. Edit 1: I am thinking the o/s reset could be done via some disk image recovery process. Edit 2: Just had a brainwave. Routine browsing could be done via the new Google Chrome O/S. I have just seen a video of the Google Chrome o/s booting off a usb pen drive in seconds.

• Strange issue with 74.125.79.118

  I'm facing with a strange issue on a Linux server. After frequent crashes the analysis found that the server is led to collapse by a huge number of connections to the ip 74.125.79.118 departing from php scripts of the hosted web sites. After a depth analysis of the files I'm found that are not present any malware infections. Ip 74.125.79.118 is Google. I realize after a Google search that the connections to this ip are generated by embedded video from youtube on web sites, among other Google features like safe search. But I don't understand how this type of behavior can lead to the collapse the server and the uniqueness of the situation leads me to think that the situation is far from being attributable only to Google and Youtube. Also I've found that blocking connections from eth0 to 74.125.79.118:80 doesn't solve the issue but if I stop DNS traffic from eth0 to internet, connections to 74.125.79.118 stops. I'm really confused about this. Any suggestions? Cheers.

• Linux boot - stop the kernel switching to a new framebuffer mode clearing output

  I'm working on an embedded system (based onUbuntu 12.04 LTS) and I'm customizing its kernel. I'm having some problem with upstart, mountall and plymouth. Nothing unsolvable I suppose, but the real problem is that I can't diagnose properly what's going on because the kernel (or maybe plymouth) changes the video mode in the middle of the boot process. This completely wipes entire lines of log and prevents any debugging of kernel misconfigurations. • Windows 7: Wi-Fi connection drops intermittently - only returns after "Troubleshoot connection" resets the adapter

  On our laptop (running Windows 7) the Wi-Fi connection drops intermittently. Symptoms: Connectivity is suddenly lost, and the "signal strenght" indicator in the tray shows zero strength and a yellow "star" symbol. What happens then: The problem does not resolve itself by just waiting. If I click on the tray icon, the "Windows network diagnostics" wizard pops up and tells me that there is a networking problem (duh). If I click on the "repair" button (not sure about the wording), the wizard works for a while, then reports that it has reset the network adapter. Then Wi-Fi works again. While the above procedure has worked every time so far, it is very annoying. It takes 10-20s to repair the connection, and in the meantime downloads, video streams etc. may have been aborted. Some more details: The problem occurs without any apparent regularity, but usually a few minutes after powerup (though not every time). It happens frequently enough to be annoying. It is unlikely to be a router problem - another laptop running at the same time usually has no Wi-Fi problems. I am at a loss about what to try to troubleshoot this. Any ideas?   I recently downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and created an USB drive with that. I started to run the Ubuntu from that USB drive. But I am facing so much problem. I am thinking why its not so much easy like Windows to do all my job in ubuntu. Always I get some error message or to install something. This time I am getting the following errors. I am trying to download and install Aircrack-ng. So used the command sudo apt-get install aircrack-ng. But the installation stops with the following error : update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated) cp: cannot stat `/vmlinuz': No such file or directory dpkg: error processing bcmwl-kernel-source (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: initramfs-tools bcmwl-kernel-source E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) I don't even have the aptitude command installed till now. Are all these errors because of I am running the ubuntu from USB drive? Is there any simple and easy way to go to Ubuntu Software Center and download all the required essentials at one shot and then Aircrack-ng? I could not find the Aircrack-ng in Ubuntu Software Center Can anybody give me detail steps to solve all my problems above. I am frustrated searching for updates and installations. When something works and something does not work. Can anybody suggest me how I should proceed after installing ubuntu to run on a USB drive. So that I can use the OS like Windows. Like software download,wireless driver, sound, video, documents, C:, D: all things should be there. Please somebody help.

• Diagnose remote desktop freezes in Windows 7 when no BSOD?

  Okay, I'm getting no joy from Asus or Microsoft on this, so hoping for some clues on how to narrow down the cause. I have very frequent OS freezes, always & only when running Remote Destkop Client (mstsc) in Windows 7 x64. I never have a bluescreen, and there is never a minidump. The display & input just freezes -- no keyboard, no mouse, and sound will just continue the last wavelength if any. So far, I can't find a way to trap the hang given that there's no bluescreen; advanced startup & recovery settings for system failure are "Write an event" checked, "Automatically restart" checked, and "Kernel memory dump". I've updated to the lasted BIOS, and tried a few different graphics drivers, both generic & ATI. I've also tried disabling Aero, and everything about the remote desktop experience (incrementally unchecked every box in the mstsc - options - experience tab), even disabled/unplugged external monitor to make sure it wasn't a dual-monitor issue. My specs are: Asus G73jh notebook 8GB RAM ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series graphics (recently tried driver versions 8.791.0.0, 8.801.0.0) American Megatrends G73jh.211 BIOS (7/27/2010) Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Windows Memory Diagnostic passed all of the following at least 3 times with no errors: MATS+ INVC LRAND Stride6 WMATS+ WINVC This notebook is better than most at removing heat (laudable vent design), so I'm not inclined to suspect thermal causes (especially since running 1080p video for hours has never caused a freeze, but mstsc does, reliably, within 5 minutes to an hour). This did seem to start happening after a Windows Update, but I've since reverted every patch applied since a week before the first occurrence, with no joy. (And I'd only had the PC for a couple weeks before that, so it could have been chance + less actual time spent remoting at the beginning.) I'm at my wits end, and I bought this laptop primarily as a remote terminal client (go figure, right?) Any ideas on how to identify the cause of this? Thanks!

• Display issue with fresh install of windows server 2012

  I installed windows server 2012 last night on my home "server". I use server loosely. From the get go I had display and graphic issues. The image was fuzzy and jumbled up during the install. This continued once booted into the install. I did installed Server 2012 twice now as the first time, I only installed "core". I know this is not a busted graphics card because it worked fine in Win7, during boot, and fine in "core" mode. Once booted into "GUI" install of Server 2012, the image was messed up again. To make things even more weird, the windows "loading" screen looks fine. Once the login screen appears the image is fuzzy and jumbled. My guess was that it was a driver issue. I did try to install the win8 x64 drivers from nvidia. This caused the system to become unbootable and I had to restore to a previous working point and uninstall the driver. I did try two different monitors and cables. Also both ports on the back of the video card. I did manage to get RDP running and that works fine. I rarely work directly on this machine but it would be nice to have the option back. Geforce 210, AMD 4600+, 4 gigs of ram.

• Multiple Settings for One Monitor

  I have my monitor set to the way I like it, it shows colors accurately and not overly bright (white doesn't blind me). However I edit photos for the web and this is great for my screen but I have noticed when looking at other screens my photos will at times looked washed out and not a good presentation. If I manually change my monitor settings to be brighter (and a few other tweaks) I can replicate the look of other monitors close enough to help prevent washed out/blown out photos. Here is the issue, I need to be able to change settings between the two fairly easily. To manually set my monitor for one then back to the other can be time consuming and a pain to set right every time. I would like to be able to preset certain settings (in software) that I can quickly switch between by pressing hotkeys or clicking shortcut on my desktop. I have an AMD video card and have attempted to use the AMD VISION Engine Control Center to add presets then tweak the settings for each. However when I switch between the presets the settings are the same. How do I build presets using the VISION Engine Control Center that actually works (maybe I misunderstand what it is saving?) or is there a way to do this in Windows 7 or free software that actually works decently for this purpose?

• Win 7 Media Center - TV - No audio on HD channels

  I wonder if you can help. I have recently purchased a PCTV Nanostick DVD-T2 290e I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and I use Windows media center for almost everything. I run a media center machine in my lounge through my Sony AV Amp onto my HD TV. I bought the Nanostick to watch ‘Freeview HD’ programmes when watching the TV through the Media Center – I also have a Sony Freeview Plus system that the Mrs uses. I installed the Nanostick with relatively no issues and as described by many user reviews Media Center picked up the new USB tuner and scanned all the new channels and I was presented with all the HD channels. The issue I have is that there is no audio sound from the HD channels but perfect video. SD works fine. The software that comes with the Nanostick works fine – both sound and vision are perfect for the HD channels. As mentioned, I run my Media Centre lots. I have an extensive DVD and BD collection stored on a server and DVD and BD all play perfectly through Arcsoft Total Media Theatre 5 – with no issues on either SD or HD. My sound card is built into my motherboard and that sends the audio signal to my gfx card and that in turn passes it through to my Sony AV Amp that decodes the audio to be heard on my 5.1 set up. Does anyone have any ideas. I have searched lots on the net and I cant find anyone else with the same issue. I am aware of codecs etc but I don’t really understand it. • Is 1GB + 1GB RAM better than 2GB +0.5GB?

  My laptop has two slots for RAM, and currently has two 512 MB chips, for 1 GB. Windows XP is running terribly slow on it, so I want to upgrade the RAM. I could buy two 1 GB chips to replace both of the current 512 MB chips, to give me 2 GB of RAM. Or, the price is the same to buy one 2 GB chip, to replace just one of the 512 MB chips, and give me 2.5 GB total. The RAM it takes is PC2-4200 533MHz DDR2. What do you think would be better: buying two 1 GB chips so it can take advantage of dual-channel operation, or buying one 2 GB chip to end up with more total RAM but not dual-channel operation? Like I said, price is the same, so performance is the only consideration. I'm not doing anything especially intensive like video or photo editing -- just having multiple Office programs open, playing music, browsers, etc., but currently even opening the first application takes forever. If it matters, the laptop is a Toshiba Qosmio G25-AV513 running Windows XP Media Center SP3. Thanks! Kevin

  I am looking for a solution for a project i am working on. We are developing a websystem where people can upload their files and other people can download it. (similar to rapidshare.com model) Problem is, some files can be demanded much more than other files. The scenerio is like: I have uploaded my birthday video and shared it with all of my friend, I have uploaded it to myproject.com and it was stored in one of the cluster which has 100mbit connection. Problem is, once all of my friends want to download the file, they cant download it since the bottleneck here is 100mbit which is 15MB per second, but i got 1000 friends and they can only download 15KB per second. I am not taking into account that the hdd is serving same files. My network infrastrucre is as follows: 1 gbit server(client) and connected to 4 Nodes of storage servers that have 100mbit connection. 1gbit server can handle the 1000 users traffic if one of storage node can stream more than 15MB per second to my 1gbit (client) server and visitor will stream directly from client server instead of storage nodes. I can do it by replicating the file into 2 nodes. But i dont want to replicate all files uploadded to my network since it is costing much more. So i need a cloud based system, which will push the files into replicated nodes automatically when demanded to those files are high, and when the demand is low, they will delete from other nodes and it will stay in only 1 node. I have looked to gluster and asked in their irc channel that, gluster cant do such a thing. It is only able to replicate all the files or none of the files. But i need it the cluster software to do it automatically. Any solutions ? (instead of recommending me amazon s3) S

• Some Apps don't start on Windows 8 Release Preview

  I recently installed the Release Preview of Windows 8 in a virtual machine. Some apps do not work. When I open them (by clicking on their tile in the start screen) I see a splash screen and nothing else happens. Sometimes the app crashes after 30 seconds, sometimes it just keeps on loading. A good example is the "Map"-App from Windows 8 or the app "Cookbook" by Bewise. I installed Cookbook and when I had a look at the task manager I saw that it was the 32bit version running, but I have an x64 Windows 8... Could this be a problem? Shouldn't the Windows Store download the correct version? This is the setup of my virtual machine: Windows 8 Release Preview x64 Oracle VirtualBox 4 of 8 cores from host system 8 of 16 GB RAM from the host system 256 MB graphics memory guest additions installed resolution 1920 x 1080 Do you need further information? Unfortunately there is no error message... I just see the start screen of the app with its logo and it keeps loading, but nothing happens. Other Apps (like Mail, Video, Social, etc.) work fine.

• Surround in Windows 7 with Soundmax

  Hey guys, I have a asus m2n motherboard with a Soundmax 1988 chip on it. I want to have surround sound in windows 7, but i cant get it to work. I tried a lot of different drivers, including the latest beta for Win 7. The problem is that when I configure the speakers and i do a "Test" all speakers work. But whenever I want to play some video or mp3, only the front speakers work. In vista there was this option called "Surround Fill" that would fix this problem, however, I cant seem to find that in windows 7. (The enhancements tab is completely gone for the speakers, other output devices do have that tab). Anybody knows the fix? Edit: I got it now kind of working by using a trial version of SRS AudioSandbox. However, the quality is quite bad since the program tries to create a real 5.1 of stereo sound. I just want to have stereo over 4 speakers instead of fake 5.1 over 4 speakers.

• Windows 7 hangs on black screen for a while after log in

  I get the welcome screen. I click on my user and get the "logging on" screen. After that all I get is a black screen with a mouse cursor. I can't even start task manager. No ctrl+alt+del or ctrl+shift+escape. It stays like this for about 10 minutes, then the desktop finally starts loading. According to the hdd led on my case, windows isn't even trying to access the hard drive for that whole time. It's just hanging doing nothing it seems. What I have tried: Uninstalled video driver and removed leftovers with driver sweeper Disabled all startup programs and non microsoft services Loaded "last known good configuration" Ran the alleged "black screen fix" from prevx against my best judgement (don't really like running random exes without knowing what they do at all) None of that works. I can boot into safe mode normally. My specs: i7 920 Gigabyte X58-UD3R Gigabyte HD5870 1GB 12GB Mushkin Silverline 1333MHz Windows 7 Ultimate x64 I'm also having another problem which I suspect is related. After I have gotten the computer up and running, everything works perfectly, but when it's been on for a while it starts behaving strangely when changing display modes. When I start up a game or anything that changes the screen resolution the computer freezes for about a minute every time until I reboot again. I think this is probably related to the black screen problem. Just thought I'd check to see if anyone has had the same problem. Let me know if I should post any more details about my system to help diagnose this. Thanks in advance.

• What Media Extender / Centre Set up should I use?

  I have installed cat6 throughout the house which I use for telephony and network. In my cellar I have a NAS Server, gigabit switch and I want to install a Media Centre to stream my video's, music, photo's and live TV (coax from the aerial to the cellar) over the cat6. Yeah I know I can get stuff on the internet but shared experience of watching TV as a family as it happens is a big plus for live TV. I'm aiming for 1080p. I want different users to be able to watch different channels. Max users = 4. I've played a little with Windows Media Centre, works fine with live TV. Likewise I have XBMC up and running with live TV. The issue I have is what do I put near the TV. I'd like a consistent user interface (grandma and the the other technophobes in the house are continually pestering me on how to use different TVs, change channel, inputs etc.) so a key part of this for me is to make the user experience the same and simple i.e. no keyboards / PCs hanging around the TV. I've just bought a Linksys DMA 2200 to test the Windows Media Centre, but obviously off eBay as they're a dying breed. And with Windows Media Centre removed from Microsoft plans such devices will get rarer. And as for 1080p, think I can forget it with that set up. I have tested XBOX 360, also works but ditto on Microsoft plans for WMC. I was thinking of a WD Live TV to test the XMBC setup. Now to the question. Any advice on Media Centre / Extender setups that will do the job as above and have some degree of futureproofing (building my own with my Raspberry PI is a last resort). I'd like to understand the standards involved in the futureproofing if anyone knows (DNLA, RVU etc.).
