  • Best Option for Creating A Small Church Website

    I've been asked to create a website for a small church. Their prior site was hosted on geocities which is no longer. They are not looking for anything robust, just an informational site with a calendar and maybe a contact form. The church would also like to be able to administer the site with little technical know-how. Cost is also an issue. Given these requirements, something like sites.google.com seems like a good option. However, my main concern is that Sites will suffer the same fate as geocities. It is definitely not a flagship Google product. Are there other good alternatives that fit the requirements?

  • Problems in creating click package for native application

    Hello everyone I've tried may times to package a native click application mainly following this tutorial: http://notyetthere.org/?p=316 The procedure works and I'm able to execute the binaries both on phones and desktops. The problems start when I install the click package. The application is launched but the game is not working (the "gamefield" is not loaded). The only error message that is given is that versions of localstorages are not compatible (that is impossbile, because it never changed). I suspect that the problem is related to apparmor but I have no proof of that.     First, I'd like for the various special devices for different floppy capacities (like /dev/fd0u720 etc.) to be available. I tried to adapt some udev rules I found online. I tried this, which I saved as /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-floppy.rules: # change floppy device ownership and permissions # default permissions are 640, which prevents group users from having write access # first fix primary devices (/dev/fd0, /dev/fd1, etc.) # also change group ownership from disk to floppy SUBSYSTEM=="block", KERNEL=="fd[0-9]*", GROUP="floppy", MODE="0660" # next recreate secondary devices (/dev/fd0u720, /dev/fd0u1440, etc.) SUBSYSTEM=="block", KERNEL=="fd[0-9]*", ACTION=="add", RUN+="create_floppy_devices -c -t $attr{cmos} -m %M -M 0660 -G floppy $root/%k" But to no avail. It seems the create_floppy_devices script isn't provided with 12.10. How do I obtain it? Second: I'm using MATE, and whenever I log in I get a message box saying it tried to mount the drive but failed. How do I disable this? Third (which is probably related to the second): Whenever there's a disk in the drive, the motor won't stop spinning. If I do a mdir of it, after it returns, the motor stops, and then starts again. I suspect there's some process in MATE doing this. UPDATE: For CentOS 6 (who does have a create_floppy_devices program) the following rules file worked.     XML Component Dictionary capabilities are provided in conjunction with the CAM Editor toolset.  These dictionaries accelerate the development of consistent XML information exchanges using standard sets of dictionary components. The quick tutorials are aimed at showing the 'how to' of the basic capabilities to jump start use of XML dictionaries with the CAM Editor. The collection of dictionary tutorials videos run for a total of approximately 20 minutes.  Each video can be reviewed individually also. Learn how to use the dictionary functions to create dictionaries by harvesting data model components from existing XSD schema, SQL database table schema, or simple Excel / Open Office spreadsheets with tables of components listed.Also included are tips and functions relating to use of NIEM exchange development, IEPD and EIEM techniques.These videos should be viewed in conjunction with reviewing the overall concepts and techniques described in the companion video on the CAM Editor and Dictionaries overview.  The approach is aligned with OASIS and Core Components Technical Specification (CCTS) standards specifications for XML components and dictionaries.Dictionary collections can be stored locally on the file system, or local network, or collaboratively on the web or cloud deployment, or can be shared and managed securely using the Oracle Enterprise Repository (OER) tool.     I am trying to create a backup of my website for free. I just want to have a backup of my website, including not only all files and the configuration but also the databases. I mean, a full backup. If it can be done automatically, it would be better. I feel there are better ways than using the cpanel to achieve that (actually, I believe sometimes web hosters does not have any cpanel). I read the following on how to do it: Automatically mirror the entire contents and configuration of your main server to a secondary backup server on a completely separate network in a different data centre. Use RSync, FXP, cPanel voodoo, or whatever method you wish to automate syncing. That is why I installed Rsync Daemon which is an alternative to SSH for remote backups. I configured it but the test went wrong.   • Creating a bootable flash without overlayfs

    I want to create an USB stick to carry my Ubuntu everywhere around with me. It's not intended to spread Ubuntu by installing it everywhere, but rather for running my configured system on any computer I come across. So far, I went with installing Ubuntu with unetbootin, however, I have some issues with this. When installed with netbootin, the original disk image is kept intact on the flash drive, forever. Also, a file is created for persistent storage and during boot it is accessed together with the image by overlayfs. This, in my opinion, has the following problems: If system is updated regularly, then files from the image are overwritten in persistent storage, doubling their size and wasting precious space. Persistent storage has a fixed size that you have to define from the start, again, wasting precious space. I'm not 100% sure, but maybe using overlayfs makes disk access slower, and more so on the relatively slow devices. So I'd like to find another solution: either to get rid of the original image or to install Ubuntu "normally" on the separate ext2 partition, or maybe even install it in the main vfat partition on the USB stick. Suggestions?

  • How to deal with transactions when creating a database connection for each query

    In line with this post here I am going to change my website to create a connection per query to take advantage of .NET's connection pooling. With this in mind, I don't know how I should deal with transactions. At the moment I do something like (psuedo code): GlobalTransaction = GlobalDBConnection.BeginTransaction(); try { ExecSQL("insert into table ..") ExecSQL("update some_table ..") .... GlobalTransaction.Commit(); }catch{ GlobalTransaction.Rollback(); throw; } ExecSQL would be like this: using (SqlCommand Command = GlobalDBConnection.CreateCommand()) { Command.Connection = GlobalDBConnection; Command.Transaction = GlobalTransaction; Command.CommandText = SQLStr; Command.ExecuteNonQuery(); } I'm not quite sure how to change this concept to deal with transactions if the connection is created within ExecSQL because I would want the transaction to be shared between both the insert and update routines.

    So I am showing a blog to a colleague and telling him how the author has been regularly blogging for over ten years now. My colleague tells me that anyone can register a domain name and start entries from say circa 2000. When I argued that the site registration date can easily show that the registration was done recently he put forward two arguments: The author can claim that he moved from an old domain name which was registered many years ago and lapsed. So he took the data and rebuilt it in the new site. The author can buy an expired domain which was on the internet for many years. I am not sure if these ways can work to con someone to believing you have been a blogger for over a decade. But I do not have enough expertise in the topic to refute him. So I thought I would ask the wise community here at StackExchange. Can anyone give me some insight?

  • Creating Corporate Windows Phone Applications

    Most developers write Windows Phone applications for their own gratification and their own wallets.  While most of the time I would put myself in the same camp, I am also a consultant.  This means that I have corporate clients who want corporate solutions.  I recently got a request for a system rebuild that includes a Windows Phone component.  This brought up the questions of what are the important aspects to consider when building for this situation. Let’s break it down in to the points that are important to a company using a mobile application.  The company want to make sure that their proprietary software is safe from use by unauthorized users.  They also want to make sure that the data is secure on the device. The first point is a challenge.  There is no such thing as true private distribution in the Windows Phone ecosystem at this time.  What is available is the ability to specify you application for targeted distribution.  Even with targeted distribution you can’t ensure that only individuals within your organization will be able to load you application.  Because of this I am taking two additional steps.  The first is to register the phone’s DeviceUniqueId within your system.  Add a system sign-in and that should cover access to your application. The second half of the problem is securing the data on the phone.  This is where the ProtectedData API within the System.Security.Cryptography namespace comes in.  It allows you to encrypt your data before pushing it to isolated storage on the device.   • Creating a Corporate Data Hub

    The Windows Azure Marketplace has a rich assortment of data and software offerings for you to use – a type of Software as a Service (SaaS) for IT workers, not necessarily for end-users. Among those offerings is the “Data Hub” – a  codename for a project that ironically actually does what the codename says. In many of our organizations, we have multiple data quality issues. Finding data is one problem, but finding it just once is often a bigger problem. Lots of departments and even individuals have stored the same data more than once, and in some cases, made changes to one of the copies. It’s difficult to know which location or version of the data is authoritative. Then there’s the problem of accessing the data. It’s fairly straightforward to publish a database, share or other location internally to store the data. But then you have to figure out who owns it, how it is controlled, and pass out the various connection strings to those who want to use it. And then you need to figure out how to let folks access the internal data externally – bringing up all kinds of security issues. Finally, in many cases our user community wants us to combine data from the internally sources with external data, bringing up the security, strings, and exploration features up all over again. Enter the Data Hub. This is an online offering, where you assign an administrator and data stewards. You import the data into the service, and it’s available to you - and only you and your organization if you wish. The basic steps for this service are to set up the portal for your company, assign administrators and permissions, and then you assign data areas and import data into them. From there you make them discoverable, and then you have multiple options that you or your users can access that data. You’re then able, if you wish, to combine that data with other data in one location. So how does all that work? What about security? Is it really that easy? And can you really move the data definition off to the Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) that know the particular data stack better than the IT team does? Well, nothing good is easy – but using the Data Hub is actually pretty simple. I’ll give you a link in a moment where you can sign up and try this yourself. Once you sign up, you assign an administrator. From there you’ll create data areas, and then use a simple interface to bring the data in. All of this is done in a portal interface – nothing to install, configure, update or manage. After the data is entered in, and you’ve assigned meta-data to describe it, your users have multiple options to access it. They can simply use the portal – which actually has powerful visualizations you can use on any platform, even mobile phones or tablets.     Your users can also hit the data with Excel – which gives them ultimate flexibility for display, all while using an authoritative, single reference for the data. Since the service is online, they can do this wherever they are – given the proper authentication and permissions.   • Creating an install of Ubuntu to clone

    I work on a team with several other developers. We all have similar hardware and we all run at least the same base development software. We are wishing to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 doing a clean install. I am looking for a way to do a base install of Ubuntu, including all our common applications, then clone it to each of the developers drives and then let them further customize their own install. Some considerations would be giving the developer the ability to have their own person id and not the same as which the base install was done with. I know they do this on VMware installs and corporate installs of Windows that can then be customized, but I have not seen this done with Ubuntu yet. Thanks

  • Scrolling though objects then creating a new instace of this object

    In my game when pressing the right mouse button you will place an object on the ground. all objects have the same super class (GameObject). I have a field called selected and will be equal to one certain gameobject at a time. when clicking the right mouse button it checks whats the instance of selected and that how it determines which object to place on the ground. code exapmle: t is the "slot" for which the object will go to. if (selected instanceof MapleTree) { t = new MapleTree(game,highLight); } else if (selected instanceof OakTree) { t = new OakTree(game,highLight); } Now it has to be a "new" instance of the object. Eventually my game will have hundreds of GameObjects and I don't want to have a huge if else statement. How would I make it so it scrolls though the possible kinds of objects and if its the correct type then create a new instance of it...? When pressing E it will switch the type of selected and is an if else statement as well. How would I do it for this too? here is a code example: if (selected instanceof MapleTree) { selected = new OakTree(game); } else if (selected instanceof OakTree) { selected = new MapleTree(game); }
