• Optical SPDIF audio from motherboard not working with receiver

  Hi, I hope someone can help; I can't get my SPDIF optical out working through my receiver and all the responses I can see on the web assume you have a sound card, while I settled for the (seemingly high end) sound on my motherboard (Asus P7P55D-E PRO), which appears to limit some of my options. My set-up is a "new out of the box" one and is: *Windows 7 PC (using PowerDVD10 for DVDs/Blurays and Windows media player for music) *Asus P7P55D-E PRO motherboard - has 8-channel audio TRS jacks and SPDIF optical and coaxial out *An old Yamaha receiver, whose only multi-channel input options are optical in and 6 channel RCA in. However, it still can handle DTS and DD *Boston Acoustic Soundware XS 5.1 speakers I've currently got the SPDIF optical out from the motherboard connected to the in on my receiver, have SPDIF enabled in the sound menu and the light is glowing red down the fibre. But I'm getting no sound at all. What I want is to be able to play DVDs/BluRays in 5.1 but also to be able to play music in multi-channel mode (even though I know this will be "fake" multichannel; it's more about where I sit in the room and my requirement to use the sub because the Boston is a satellite/sub set-up) My questions are: *Will optical work at all for multi-channel? THe latest posts I can see suggest it does but some people seem to say optical only outputs stereo. Whom to believe? *Even if it does work, I've read that I have to disable AC-3 decoding, or make various other changes, which don't seem to be possible without the menu options that a sound-card brings. Is the motherboard-only option just too inflexible? *Although my SPDIF device is enabled in the sound menu, it insists under "Jack information" that it is a "rear panel RCA jack", when of course it is not (both TOSLINK and rCA jacks do exist). Has the PC just forgotten that it has an optical? *I think I could relatively easily connect the 8-channel 3.5mm TRS jacks to my receiver 6-ch input jacks by way of TRS/RCA cables, but would that not stop me from being able to play music from media-player in multi-channel mode, as I'm not sure the motherboard can cope *Or do I need to bite the bullet and buy a sound-card? And if so, how can I be sure the one I get doesn't have the same problem? Any thoughts gratefully received, Cheers, simon

• Good Audio Splitter

  I need to get audio from my computer's headphone jack and push the output to 2 sets of speakers. I have tried using a cheap splitter from Fry's, but one set of speakers ends up acting as a microphone (!?) for the other set of speakers. What's the best way to split headphone output and get best quality with no interference on each set of speakers? I would, of course, also be interested in why the cheap splitter causes one set of speakers to start acting as a microphone.

• Looking for a fiber optic "switch" or "router" for home use

  The gist of my question: What is a "fiber optic" switch called? I.E. a layer 2 ethernet switch that uses fiber TX and RX connections and sends layer 2 network traffic between the fiber strands that are connected. Can someone purchase a dedicated fiber switch that does not have copper ethernet ports? What is the current average price of a device like this? Not necessarily looking for product endorsements, just information Might not make sense to go this route if it is too cost prohibitive What type of fiber connector is used for terminating a fiber strand into a jack on the wall? Can fiber be "patched" using two jacks and a "patch" cable? Is signal loss a concern with the longest runs at 100-200ft, a patch cable and media converters? The full story: My parents had unterminated fiber optic cable and terminated Cat5e run throughout their home when it was built in 2004. 10 years later the Cat5e isn't providing the throughput that my father needs to accomplish multiple streams of HD and fast system backups throughout the house. He can't reach gigabit speeds across the distance of the Cat5e runs. We are both interested in terminating the fiber connections and using them as high speed "backbones" to copper switches in each room of the house. It would be easy to attain gigabit speeds (or better, eventually) using the fiber. I have searched and searched for a "fiber optic switch" or "fiber optic router" and cannot find the correct term to describe this piece of hardware. We can use fiber media converters at the end points of each connection, however it would be nice to have a "patch panel" set up in the network closet in the basement that has fiber connections on it and switches the ethernet streams between the connections/systems in the house. Each fiber media converter costs between $50-$100 a piece... After 10 or so terminated connections it might make sense to find a piece of hardware that does not require media converters. That would depend upon the cost of this hardware Somewhat unrelated, if we are able to route between these fiber strands successfully, what is the physical connector type used in a jack on the wall? Just like RJ45 has a wall outlet (depicted below): What is the fiber optic equivalent of this? In the interim could we "patch" a couple fiber strands together in the network closet? Would signal loss be of concern with a run length of 100-200 feet, a patch cable and two media converters? If that would work then it could be used until the funds are available for more.

• Windows not remembering default audio device?

  I prefer the audio output on my computer to use the standard audio jack output due to volume issues. But I am using a monitor with HDMI. I have chosen to set the default audio device to be "Speakers" But every time I reboot the default audio device is the HDMI Output again. I am running Windows 7 64bit. Why does it not remember the default device? (I do shutdown and boot up properly without errors.)

  A friend of mine is moving to a building with no Internet connectivity. Ethernet and wifi are out of the question. What is the best way for him to get his desktop connected? The most obvious solution is for him to get an unlimited 3G data plan. What is the best way for him to set this up? I am assuming he should get something like Verizon's MiFi 3G access point, but does this have an ethernet jack?

• Hp pavilion dv7 power button

  My power button is non responsive I am getting LED for charging. I've taken it apart before to change the dc jack and it was fine and a few months later it just powered off. I try to power back on and is goes to start up then shuts off. I just took it apart and came to find the ribbon cable connecting the power button/speakers cover is barely hanging on do I have to replace the whole thing or is there a way to replace the ribbon cable?

• Which connector do I need for a "line level" subwoofer?

  I've got a separate pair of speakers and I'm looking at adding a subwoofer (this, specifically). I noticed on the detail page it's inputs are listed as such: Inputs: Speaker level, line level If I'm not mistaken "line level" are the standard 3.5 audio jacks on your motherboard/sound card, right? My motherboard has the standard 6 ports for sound, if I get a subwoofer like this can I simply plug the input into the orange 3.5 jack? My audio software supports up to 7.1 so software-wise, 2.1 wouldn't be a problem.

• Can I boot my notebook via eSata pci-xpress card?

  I would like to boot directly from an external hard disk to improve performance over my internal notebook hard disk. My notebook has no native eSata jack but a pci express card. As my BIOS doesn't support the card on boot time so no way directly booting it. My question is, is it possible to work around this issue by using an USB stick or similar with a boot loader like grub and if so, will this only work for Linux or Windows as well?

• Is there a way to detect which port on an ethernet switch a device is connected to?

  Since the wall jack is typically always connected to the same port on the switch I would like to be able to know which device is connected at a specific location. In my case I am talking about printers. I have code to go out on the network and find the IP Address of all of my printers, but would like to be able to update a server based on a printer being swapped out of a location for maintenance or repair. Let us recollect the data sample we were working in the previous sample. The following are the reports I am going to generate 1. Representation of share of Sales by each Sales person. 2. Representation of share of sales data according to sale type 3. Representation of sales progress over time period I am going to demonstrate how to bind the chart control programmatically. In order to facilitate this, I created an aspx page named “SalesAnalysis.Aspx” to my project. In the page I added the following controls 1. Dropdownlist control – with id ddlAnalysisType, user will use this to choose the type of chart they want to see. 2. A Button control – with id btnSubmit , by clicking this button, the chart based on the dropdownlist selection will be shown to the user 3. A label Control – with id lblMessage, to display the message to the user, initially this will ask the user to select an option and click on the button. 4. Chart control – with id chrtAnalysis, by default, I set visible = false so that during the page load the chart will be hidden to the users. The following is the initial output of the page. Generating chart for salesperson share Now from Visual Studio, I have double clicked on the button; it created the event handler btnSubmit_Click. In the button Submit event handler, I am using a switch case to execute the corresponding SQL statement and bind it to the chart control. The below is the code for generating the sales person share chart using a pie chart. The above code produces the following output The steps for creating the above chart can be summarized as follows. You specify a chart area, then a series and bind the chart to some x and y values. That is it. If you want to control the chart size and position, you can set the properties for the ChartArea.Position element. For e.g. in the previous code, after instantiating the chart area, setting the below code will give you a bigger pie chart. c.Position.Width = 100; c.Position.Height = 100; The width and height values are in percentage. In this case the chart will be generated by utilizing all the width and height of the chart object. See the output updated with the width and height set to 100% each. Generate Chart for sales type share Now for generating the chart according to the sales type, you just need to change the SQL query and x and y values of the chart. The Sql query used is “SELECT SUM(saleAmount) amount, SaleType from SalesData group by SaleType” and the X-Value is amount and Y-Values is SaleType. s.XValueMember = "SaleType"; s.YValueMembers = "amount"; After modifying the above code with these, the following output is generated. Generate Chart for sales progress over time period For generating the progress of sale chart against sales amount / period, line chart is the ideal tool. In order to facilitate the line chart, you can use Chart Type as System.Web.UI.DataVisualization.Charting.SeriesChartType.Line. Also we need to retrieve the amount and sales date from the data source. I have used the following query to facilitate this. “SELECT SaleAmount, SaleDate FROM SalesData” The output for the line chart is as follows Now you have seen how easily you can build various types of charts. Chart control is an excellent one that helps you to bring business intelligence to your applications. What I demonstrated in only a small part of what you can do with the chart control. • Realtek HD Audio Driver for Ubuntu 12.04?

  I recently switched to Ubuntu 12.04 on my Toshiba laptop. I haven't had any issues except for one. I realized that there is a red light coming out of my earphone jack. It's something like this: http://i.stack.imgur.com/gokuH.jpg I looked in the folder that Toshiba created for installing drivers , then I found out that they had installed this driver for my sound card : Realtek HD Audio Driver v6.0.1.5689_withMaxxAudio_Compal(20080908) I'm guessing that the sound card supports Optical Audio Output. I also found out that when I mute the speakers, the light goes away. But when I unmute it, it comes back. I don't really mind having it but it drains my battery. So, is there a Ubuntu version for my sound card driver? Thanks in advance.

• What skills should a developer/tester learn in order to move into a permanent Systems Analysis role?

  I have been with a software services firm for 5 years and have fallen into a "jack of all trades" role, which I am looking to move out of. I've spent about 1 year each in programming (VB/VB.NET), application support, systems analysis, and most recently, software testing, which in my current position is all manual. I've really lost interest in the programming and testing roles; I would prefer a position where I get to work more with people, such as systems analysis. I even got a chance to be a trainer at the same company for a few months, a temporary position which I enjoyed very much. Given that most of my real experience is with software, support, and testing, what knowledge areas and skills should I focus on learning and mastering in order to make myself an attractive candidate for a permanent position as a business/systems analyst?

• SPDIF Input not working

  One of my motherboard has two SPDIF sockets. One input and one output. Under windows these work fine and I am able to achieve what I'm trying here. I want to set Ubuntu up so it will play the Digital input out the Analogue output(normal headphone jack). Under my input devices there is no digital options, and under configuration there is no option for Digital Stereo input I only have options for Digital output and Analogue input, when really I want it the other way around. Can anyone shed any light? error when starting gnome-alsamixer:

• Sound muted in milliseconds after unmute

  I installed Ubuntu 11.10 recently, and sound doesn't work properly. Whenever I try to play a sound (from any software), the sound is muted, and when I unmute it, it stats there for a fraction of second and mutes itself. After trying various things, I plugged in a headphone in the front microphone jack of my computer, and magecally, the sound started to come out from my speakers (Which are connected to the line-out in the rear panel). I have analog stereo speakers. The sound card (intel HDA as shown in alsamixer) is detected properly. I have ecs G41T-M7 motherboard and nVidia GT240 (with graphics drivers installed)

  I have a problem with amnesia game. After Intro and clicking continue button few times, when game is supposed to start it crashes. • {solved}stream TV audio through mic input?

  I have a gaming headset and use it with a few devices and am looking for a way to stream my audio through my pc from tv through the mic jack and then through the optical out. the system is detecting sound from the mic port. I would put this directly through the headset but that port is being used by my ps3. So I would like a way as I said to stream it through my pc to my headset, and it be great to have an integrated volume option in the sound drop down too. [TV - mic - Ubuntu - headset(optical out)] Ubuntu 13.04 EDIT I found part of a solution. Solution by installing pavucontrol and using "pactl load-module module-loopback latency_msec=1" I can stream the audio through my pc.

• No sound from internal speaker but headphones OK

  The problem: The system won't play sound on the internal speaker of the laptop, but only on the headphone. When I put the headphone jack half in and fiddle around with it, then it'll play even on the internal speakers (the system apparently believes, that the headphone are in). What should I do?
