  • Drawbacks with reading and writing a big file to or from disk at once instead of small chunks?

    I work mainly on Windows and Windows CE based systems, where CreateFile, ReadFile and WriteFile are the work horses, no matter if I'm in native Win32 land or in managed .Net land. I have so far never had any obvious problem writing or reading big files in one chunk, as opposed to looping until several smaller chunks are processed. I usually delegate the IO work to a background thread that notifies me when it's done. But looking at file IO tutorials or "textbook examples", I often find the "loop with small chunks" used without any explanation of why it's used instead of the more obvious (I dare to say!) "do it all at once". Are there any drawbacks to the way I do that I haven't understood?

    Hi; I was reading an article on Vadym Stetsiak's blog about how to transfer variable length messages with async sockets (url: http://vadmyst.blogspot.com/2008/03/part-2-how-to-transfer-fixed-sized-data.html). He says : What to expect when multiple messages arrive at the server? While dealing with multiple messages one has to remember that receive operation can return arbitrary number of bytes being read from the net. Typically that size is from 0 to specified buffer length in the Receive or BeginReceive methods. So, even if I tell BeginReceive to read 100 bytes, it may read less than that and returns??? I am developing a network-enabled software (TCP/IP), and I always receive the same exact number of bytes I asked for. I don't even understand the logic : why would Receive completes asynchronously if it didn't get every byte I asked for ... just keep waiting. Maybe it has something to do with IP vs TCP? Thank you for your help.

    Hello, everybody. I'm here to ask if any of you know how to develop an app for Mac OS X that keeps reading everything the user types in. An example of app that implements this behavior is Text Expander. Text Expander reads everything the user types in, searching for abbreviations previously added on it. When one of this abbreviations is found, Text Expander replace the abbreviation form for the entire content related to that abbreviation. So, I would like to know what resource of Objective-C or Cocoa let you do this kind of stuff. P.S.: Just to mention, I'm not thinking about developing something like a key logger. I'm just curious and thinking about at developing a snippet platform.

    I am looking for a .NET library that is able to decode data from a PDF-417 barcode that is embedded either in an image file or PDF. At this point, I have only been able to find a Java version and a C version. Ideally, this library would be both open-source and free of charge, but I doubt such a decoder exists. I am open to trying out demos of existing products that you may have had experience with - which leads me to the question - have you had any experience reading PDF-417 barcodes embedded in images or PDFs using .NET, and which of the available products would you recommend to do so?

  • How to verify if file is according to mask in PHP without reading filename from disk.

    I have a list of file names(I already have the filelist let's say in a text file). I want to process this list in the following way: filenames of type /dirX/subdirX//.ext will be written in a new file all the other filenames will be written in a separate file. Is there any option to verify if a filename corresponds to a mask, without reading the file name from disk?(by filename I mean a simple string). I would like to know if there is such a function that don't require disk access. I know regex could be an workaround but I'd like to have something from php.

    I am interested in implementing an architecture that has two databases one for read operations and the other for writes. I have never implemented something like this and have always built single database, highly normalised systems so I am not quite sure where to begin. I have a few parts to this question. 1. What would be a good resource to find out more about this achitecture? 2. Is it just a question of replicating between two identical schemas, or would your schemas differ depending on the operations, would normalisation vary too? 3. How do you insure that data written to one database is immediately available for reading from the second? Any further help, tips, resources would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Having trouble reading XML file from Windows server. Works on Linux

    I'm parsing an XML file in an android app. My success varies depending upon where the file is hosted. After hosting the file on 4 different servers (2 Linux, 2 Windows), I discovered that when the xml is hosted on a Linux server, the app works. When it's hosted on a Windows server, I am unable to parse correctly. Instead of reading the expected xml tags, it reads HTML tags (, , , etc). I'm not sure why it doesn't work on Windows servers, or if that is even the issue and not just a coincidence. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.     I have a text file with machine code in this form: B2 0A 05 B2 1A 01 B3 08 00 17 B2 09 18 where an instruction has this format: OP Mode Operand Note: Operand could be 1 or 2 bytes. Where:(example) OP = B2 Mode = 0A Operand = 05 How can I read the bytes in a variable? As shown in the above example. When i read the file I get individual characters. I have an array of pointers where I read individual line, but still cannot solve the problem of reading a byte. Any ideas,suggestions. I hope I am not confusing anyone here. Thank you.

For instance, I would like for THIS to happen: myfilearray[1]array[2]endl; Obviously, the "endl" just isn't allowed. Is there another way to do this? Edit---thanks for the quick responses guys! From a text file, I'm trying to store two strings from that file into arrays and then do the same with the next line (or until I desire, using a for loop) Using strings is important to me as it will make my future program a lot more flexible.

  • Reading in MIPS external file so another file can use it?

    Hey all, I'm working on this final thing for my MIPS project and it's deceptively easy. I need to get a procedure (called feed) and let its main driver program use it by reading it in. I know that I'm supposed to use the call code 14 and .globl sym (I think) in order to feed it into the file and have it read it. I just need a basic tutorial or something, as I CANNOT find it on the Internet or in my book (just lists the call code, real helpful). Here's what I know: I need to use read, but I also need a file descriptor (don't know where to get it). I need to put the buffer in $a1 and the length in $a2. Well, that's about it. If there's any decent tutorial you could whip up or if there is one online that I don't see let me know please :). I just need a push in the right direction, I'm sure it can't be too difficult, just can't find any info on it!

  • Why do (Russian) characters in some received emails change when reading in David InfoCenter?

    I'm using David InfoCenter as email Software, and I have troubles with some of my emails in Russian. It's only a few letters, in some emails (sent from different people), like for example the "R" ("P" in russian) will be shown as a "T". In other emails in Russian, the problem doesn't appear. Isn't it strange? Does anyone had the same problem already and found where it came from? When I transmit that email to an external mailbox (internet email account), it's even worse, and gives me symbols instead of all Russian letters... The default encoding was "Russian (ISO)", I changed it to "Russian (Windows)", but same problem. Another weird reaction is when I write an intern email and name it TEST in Russian (????), with ???? in the text window, it changes the title to "Oano"? But the content stays in Russian... With Mailinator I got the following, for message and subject "????": Subject: ????   • On Windows 7, the last access date is not changed even after reading the file?

    I have some files on Windows 7, and want to see what time it was that I read it this morning (February 27 morning), but when I right click on the file and choose Properties, I see Accessed: Yesterday, Feb 26, 2011, 2:12:37PM so I open the file to read the content again, and then open up the Properties again, and still the Accessed (date) is the same (Feb 26). Even if I add a column to the folder for "Date Accessed", it still shows Feb 26. But today is Feb 27 and clearly I have "accessed" it... so how can I see the true last accessed date?

    When I open an iCal invitation (Mail Attachment.ics file) in Mac Mail.app sent to me from someone using Thunderbird, I receive the following error: The only solution that I've found to date is to save the Mail Attachment.ics file somewhere like the Desktop, open it in a text editor, and delete the blank lines at the beginning and end of the file. This problem appears to only happen when I'm receiving invitations from people using Thunderbird under Windows. Does anyone know of a better way to solve this problem? Is this a bug in Apple iCal, or is Thunderbird not meeting the iCal spec?   • How to make IE 9 stop reading all the fonts every time?

    Process Monitor showed me that IE 9 accesses every time it loads on my system, which makes it have a 1- to 2-second delay every time it loads. (I tested this by removing my fonts -- it loaded much more quickly.) It gets a little annoying, because it's the best handler I have for MHT files, so I don't want to switch to something else. Is there any way to make it avoid doing that? (The "Hide Fonts" feature in Windows 7 doesn't work.)

    I have a group of users on Windows Server 2003 who need to be able to read the contents of two directories but not be able to access anything else on the server (including read-only access). One of the directories is K:\projectFour\config — and the other is similarly formatted — so it would be okay for group members to be able to list the contents of K:\ and K:\projectFour\ but not actually read anything in those directories. I've found several resources via SF/Google, including how to restrict individual folders/drives and how to allow users to only run specific executables, but that information ultimately didn't solve my issue. Sorry if this is a really simple thing to do, I'm usually a developer and don't know the first thing about servers or group policies. Finally, I should mention that this isn't a fully concrete question, as it will be implemented eventually but I don't personally have a copy of Windows Server 2003 to test with right now.

  • Why will multiple dvd/cd-rom drives stop reading?

    I'm having difficulty with two dvd/cd drives. When I updated from XP to Vista, I noticed they wouldn't work. I could add cds or dvds to the drives and they would attempt to read the disk, but never "found" a disk in the drive. Vista showed the drives existed without problems. I updated their drivers and nothing changed. I thought perhaps, oddly, both drives were going bad. Then I got Windows 7, and I figured I'd have to do some gymnastics in order to get it onto my system without a working disk drive. However, I can boot from the Windows 7 disk fine! I installed 7 hoping that it was a Vista problem and I'd reclaim my drives, but that is not the case. The same symptoms persist. Thoughts?

    I was trying to get my Logitech G510 keyboard's back-lights working so I went into the Synaptic Package Manager and marked LibG15, G15daemon, and all the other associated packages. Synaptic reported a failed install. Now all Package management is failing due to libg15 being "halfway installed."
