• Use Twitter in Windows Media Center with TwitterMCE

  Are you a Media Center user who just can’t get enough Twitter? If so, you may want to check out the TwitterMCE plugin for Windows Media Center. Download and install TwitterMCE application. (See download link below) When you start Windows Media Center, you’ll find the TwitterMCE icon listed in the Extras. When you open the plug-in you’ll be prompted for a Paypal donation and have to wait out the 15 second timer. Next, you’ll need to log in to your Twitter account. Enter your Twitter account username and password. You can do this with the keyboard or by entering letters and numbers with a Media Center remote. When you are finished, select the Login button.   You’ll be prompted to select Standard or Video Mode. Standard displays items in a more vertical fashion. Video displays them horizontally and one at a time, and also allows you to watch Live TV, a movie, or video at the same time. Reading Your Tweets Clicking on Home allows you to read the latest Twitter messages from your friends. You can access the previous 20 tweets. Scroll up and down to see additional messages in Standard mode, ro right and left in Video mode. Click on the individual Twitter messages to get more information, such as which friend sent the tweet. Create a Tweet To Create a Tweet directly from Media Center, select the Update button. Type out your message using your keyboard or your remote and the on-screen keyboard. When you are finished, select Update to send your Twitter message. A few moments later your new tweet will appear.   To send a tweet while you are watching TV or a video, log in to the TwitterMCE app, choose the Video mode, and select Update.   Enter your tweet with the remote or keyboard. Select Update to send the tweet.   You can also view Mentions, Friends, and Followers selecting the appropriate button.   Scroll through your list of friends to read their latest tweets.   The TwitterMCE plugin works will Windows Vista Premium, Ultimate, and Windows 7. It might not completely replace your favorite Twitter App, but it will allow you to send all the tweets you want without having to take your eyes off your favorite TV programs. • 2013 Predictions for Retail

  Its that time of year to roll out the predictions for next year.  I can't say I've really nailed it in the past, but feel free to look back at my 2012, 2011, and 2010 predictions.  I'm not expecting anything earth-shattering this year; just continued maturation of several technologies that are finally taking hold. 1. Next day delivery -- Amazon finally decided it wasn't worth fighting state taxes and instead decided to place distribution centers everywhere so they can potentially offer next-day deliveries.  Not to be outdone, Walmart is looking to leverage its huge physical presence to offer the same.  Clubs like ShopRunner are pushing delivery barriers as well, so the norm is shifting to free shipping in a few days or relatively cheap shipping overnight.  Retailers need be thinking about how to ship from physical stores. 2. Bring your own device -- Earlier this year Intuit bought AisleBuyer, a mobile self-checkout start-up, at least somewhat validating the BYOD approach.  Grocery stores, especially in Europe, have been supporting in-aisle self-scanning for a while and I'm betting it will find a home in certain verticals in the US too.  There's also the BYOD concept for employees.  Some retailers are considering issuing mobile devices at hiring along side the shirt and name-tag.  Employees become responsible for the hardware until they leave. 3. TV shopping -- Will Apple finally release a TV product in 2013?  Who knows?  But the industry isn't standing still. Companies like QVC and HSN are already successfully combining the TV and online experiences for shopping.  Comcast is partnering with Tivo to allow viewers to interact with ads with Paypal handing payment.  This will be a slow maturation, but expect TVs to get smarter and eventually become a new selling channel (pun intended) for retailers. 4. Privacy backlash -- It only takes one big incident to stir the public, and I'm betting we have one in 2013.  Facebook, Google, or Apple will test the boundaries of what the public is willing to accept.  It could involve a retailer using geo-location technology, or possibly video analytics.  And as is always the case, the offender will apologize, temporarily remove the technology, and wait 2-3 years for it to be generally accepted.  Privacy is a moving target. 5. More NFC -- I've come to the conclusion that adoption of any banking technology is going to be slow.  It was slow for credit cards, ATMs, and online billpay so why should it be any different for NFC?  Maybe, just maybe the iPhone 5S will have an NFC chip, but we're not going to see mainstream uptake for years.  Next year we'll continue to see incremental improvements from Isis, Google, and Paypal and a plethora of new startups, but don't toss your magstripe cards just yet. 6. In-store location -- The technologies for tracking people inside stores is really improving.  Retailers can track people using video cameras, infrared, and by the WiFi radios in mobile phones.  We're getting closer to the point where accuracy could be a shelf-facing, which will help retailers understand how people shop, where they spend time, and what displays attract them.  Expect CPG companies to get involved and partner with retailers, since the data benefits both parties.  Consumers will benefit by being directed right to the products they seek.  (In 2013 ARTS is forming a workteam to develop new standards in this area.) 7. M&A -- Looking back at 2012 there were some really big deals involving IBM, Oracle, JDA, and NCR and I expect that trend will likely continue as vendors add assets to bolster their portfolios.  Many retailers are due for an IT transformation to support anywhere, anytime shoppers, and one-stop-vendors can minimize complexity and costs. What is aspect ratio – the ratio from the height to the width 2.35:1 The image is 2.35 times wide as it is high Pixar uses this for half of our movies This is called a widescreen image When modified to fit your television screen They cut this to fit the box of your screen When a comparison is made huge chunks of picture is missing It is harder to find what is going on when these pieces are missing The whole is greater than the pieces themselves. If you are missing pieces – you are missing the movie The soul and the mood is in the film shots. Cutting it to fit a screen, you are losing 30% of the movie Why different aspect ratios? Film before the 1950s 1.33:1 Academy Standard There were all aspects of images though. There was no standard. Thomas Edison developed projecting images onto a wall/screen He didn’t patent it as he saw no value in it. Then 1.37:1 came about to add a strip of sound This is the same size as a 35mm film Around 1952 – TV comes along NTSC Television followed the Academy Standard (4x3) Once TV came out, movie theater attendance plummets So Film brought forth color to combat this. Also early 3D Also Widescreen was brought forth. Cinema-Scope Studios at the time made movies bigger and bigger There was a Napoleon movie that was actually 4x1 … really wide. 1.85:1 Academy Flat 2.35:1 Anamorphic Scope (aka Panavision/Cinemascope) Almost all movies are made in these two aspect ratios Pixar has done half in one and half in the other Why choose one over the other? Artist choice It is part of the story the director wants to tell Can we preserve the story outside of the theaters? TVs before 1998 – they were very square Now TVs are very wide Historical options Toy Story released as it was and people cut it in a way that wasn’t liked by the studio Pan and Scan is another option Cut and then scan left or right depending on where the action is Frame Height Pixar can go back and animate more picture to account for the bottom/top bars. You end up with more sky and more ground The characters seem to get lost in the picture You lose what the director original intended Re-staging For animated movies, you can move characters around – restage the scene. It is a new completely different version of the film This is the best possible option that Pixar came up with They have stopped doing this really as the demand as pretty much dropped off Why not 1.33 today? There has been an evolution of taste and demands. VHS is a linear item The focus is about portability and not about quality Most was pan and scan and the quality was so bad – but people didn’t notice DVD was introduced in 1996 You could have more content – two versions of the film You could have the widescreen version and the 1.33 version People realized that they are seeing more of the movie with the widescreen High Def Televisions (16x9 monitors) This was introduced in 2005 Blu-ray Disc was introduced in 2006 This is all widescreen You cannot find a square TV anymore TVs are roughly 1.85:1 aspect ratio There is a change in demand Users are used to black bars and are used to widescreen Users are educated now What’s next for in-flight entertainment?   Mobile Makeover For many companies the first foray into Windows Phone 7 (WP7) may be in porting their existing mobile apps. It is tempting to simply transfer existing functionality, avoiding the additional design costs. Readdressing business needs and taking advantage of the WP7 platform can reduce cost and is essential to a successful re-launch. To better understand the advantage of new development lets examine a conceptual upgrade of Comcasts existing mobile app. Before Comcast has a great mobile app that provides several key features. The ability to browse the lineup using a guide, a client for Comcast email accounts, On Demand gallery, and much more. We will leverage these and build on them using some of the incredible WP7 features.   After With the proliferation of DVRs (Digital Video Recorders) and a variety of media devices (TV, PC, Mobile) content providers are challenged to find creative ways to build their brands. Every client touch point must provide both value added services as well as opportunities for marketing and up-sale; WP7 makes it easy to focus on those opportunities. The new app is an excellent vehicle for presenting Comcasts newly rebranded TV, Voice, and Internet services. These services now fly under the banner of xfinity and have been expanded to provide the best experience for Comcast customers. The Windows Phone 7 app will increase the surface area of this service revolution.   The home menu is simplified and highlights Comcasts Triple Play: Voice, TV, and Internet. The inbox has been replaced with a messages view, and message management is handled by a WP7 hub. The hub presents emails, tweets, and IMs from Comcast and other viewers the user follows on Twitter.  The popular view orders shows based on the users viewing history and current cable package. The first show Glee is both popular and participating in a conceptual co-marketing effort, so it receives prime positioning. The second spot goes to a hit show on a premium channel, in this example HBOs The Pacific, encouraging viewers to upgrade for this premium content. The remaining spots are ordered based on viewing history and popularity. Tapping the play button moves the user to the theatre where they can watch previews or full episodes streaming from Fancast. Tapping an extra presents the user with show details as well as interactive content that may be included as part of co-marketing efforts. Co-Marketing with Dynamic Content The success of Comcasts services are tied to the success of the networks and shows it purveys, making co-marketing efforts essential. In this concept FOX is co-marketing its popular show Glee. A customized panorama is updated with the latest gleeks tweets, streaming HD episodes, and extras featuring photos and video of the cast. If WP7 apps can be dynamically extended with web hosted .xap files, including sandboxed partner experiences would enable interactive features such as the Gleek Peek, in which a viewer can select a character from a panorama to view the actors profile. This dynamic inline experience has a tailored appeal to aspiring creatives and is technically possible with Windows Phone 7.   Summary The conceptual Comcast mobile app for Windows Phone 7 highlights just a few of the incredible experiences and business opportunities that can be unlocked with this latest mobile solution. It is critical that organizations recognize and take full advantage of these new capabilities. • Add new item to UITableView and Core Data as data source?

  I have trouble to add new item to my table view with core data. Here is the brief logic in my codes. I think that both the number of objects in my data source or context and the number of rows in my table view should be 1. However, I got an exception in the event of tabView:numberOfRowsInSection: Invalid update: invalid number of rows in section 0. The number of rows contained in an existing section after the update (0) must be equal to the number of rows contained in that section before the update (0), plus or minus the number of rows inserted or deleted from that section (1 inserted, 0 deleted). The exception was raised right after the delegate event: - (NSInteger) tableView:(UITableView *) tableView numberOfRawsInSection:(NSInteger) section { // fetchedResultsController is class member var NSFetchedResultsController id <NSFechedResultsSectionInfo> sectionInfo = [[fetchedResultsController sections] objectAtIndex: section]; NSInteger rows = [sectionInfo numberOfObjects]; return rows; } In debug mode, I found that the rows was still 0 and the event invoked after the the even of toggleEditing. It looks like that sectionInfo obtained from fetchedResultsController did not include the new entity object inserted. Not sure if I miss anything or steps? I am not sure how it works: to get the fetcedResultsController notified or reflect the change when a new entity is inserted into the current managed object context?

• PostgreSQL: Full Text Search - How to search partial words ?

  Hello, Following a question posted here about how I can increase the speed on one of my SQL Search methods, I was advised to update my table to make use of Full Text Search. This is what I have now done, using Gist indexes to make searching faster. On some of the "plain" queries I have noticed a marked increase which I am very happy about. However, I am having difficulty in searching for partial words. For example I have several records that contain the word Squire (454) and I have several records that contain Squirrel (173). Now if I search for Squire it only returns the 454 records but I also want it to return the Squirrel records as well. My query looks like this SELECT title FROM movies WHERE vectors @@ to_tsoquery('squire'); I thought I could do to_tsquery('squire%') but that does not work. How do I get it to search for partial matches ? Also, in my database I have records that are movies and others that are just TV Shows. These are differentiated by the "" over the name, so like "Munsters" is a TV Show, whereas The Munsters is the film of the show. What I want to be able to do is search for just the TV Show AND just the movies. Any idea on how I can achieve this ? Regards Anthoni

• Android 2.1 fling gesture captured on textview but still a contextmenu opens

  The following problem seems unique to 2.1, happens both on an emulator and on a nexus. The same example works fine on other platforms I've tested (1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 emulators). I've added created gestureListener as described in this post. The difference is that I've added the listener on a TextView which also has a contextMenu registered, i.e. sth like the following: onCreate(...) { ... // Layout contains a large TextView on which I want to add a context menu tv = findViewById(R.id.text_view); tv.registerForContextMenu(this); // create the gestureListener according above mentioned post. gestureListener = ... // set the listener on the text-view tv.setOnTouchListener(gestureListener); ... } When testing it, the correct gesture is recognized alright, but every other time it also causes the context menu to be opened. As the same example is working on non 2.1 platforms, I've got a feeling it is not my code that is the problem... Thankful for any suggestions.

• Android - Dealing with a Dialog on Screen Orientation change

  I am overriding the onCreateDialog and onPrepareDialog methods or the Dialog class. I have followed the example from Reto Meier's Professional Android Application Development book, Chapter 5 to pull some XML data and then use a dialog to display the info. The error still occurs even when I tell my activity to ignore screen orientation in the manifest. So I presume something has been left out of the example in the book do I need to override another method to save my variables in or something?

• Modelling problem - Networked devices with commands

  I encountered a head scratching modelling problem today: We are modelling a physical control system composed of Devices and NetworkDevices. Any example of a Device is a TV. An example of a NetworkDevice is an IR transceiver with Ethernet connection. As you can see, to be able to control the TV over the internet we must connect the Device to the NetworkDevice. There is a one to many relationship between Device and NetworkDevice i.e. TV only has one NetworkDevice (the IR transceiver), but the IR transceiver may control many Devices (e.g. many TVs). So far no problem. The complicated bit is that every Device has a collection of Commands. The type of the Command (e.g IrCommand, SerialCommand - N.B. not currently modelled) depends on the type of NetworkDevice that the Device is connected to. In the current legacy system the Device has a collection of generic Commands (no typing) where fields are "interpreted" depending on the NetworkDevice type. How do I go about modelling this in OOP such that: You can only ever add a Command of the appropriate type, given the NetworkDevice the Device is attached to? If I change the NetworkDevice the Commands collection changes to the appropriate type Make it so the API is simple/elegant/intuitive to use

• What's wrong with debugging in Eclipse on Android?

  I've obviously been spoiled by Visual Studio, because although I'm just learning Android and the Eclipse environment, debugging apps in Eclipse is becoming a serious detriment to further development. For example, Eclipse will compile this divide by zero just fine: public class Lesson2Main extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate (savedInstanceState); int i = 1 / 0; TextView tv = new TextView (this); tv.setText ("Hello, Android!"); setContentView (tv); } } And then, when it executes it under the debugger, I will get a full screen of useless debug info, non of which actually points me to the specific line containing the error. The stackTrace is null within the exception ('e') info tree, and it simply states a message stating 'ArithmeticException'. (that's nice, how about you point me in the direction of where you found it!?) I've looked all over the screen and am baffled that this IDE can't get this right. Does developing with Eclipse resort everyone back to 1991 with printf() like logging at every interval then to track down bugs? Seriously. Is there a configuration or plug-in that I'm missing to help with this? I haven't tested this case with XCode, but if the iPhone dev. IDE handles this more like Visual Studio, then no wonder the Android marketplace has so few apps. I'm excited about Android, but it seems that Eclipse is getting in the way.

• Android: Associating Browser to File Type in App

  I'm attempting to write a simple app that associates a file type to the browser; this is assuming the browser will open the file locally... If this doesn't work, the local file - editor will be fine. I have an option of auto-mailing .ELC files from a custom app, they are basically html formatted TEXT or TXT only files; I would like to associate the .elc extension so that it will open direct from mail rather than just "Save to SD Card" as a mail option.   Hello, First, excuse my english :) I've read on apple developer website that video playback provides by the framework supports only full screen mode. I will need to develop an application where video can be played in reduce screen mode. I've see that Orange TV make something which looks like what i need to do. http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/1228/tvplayerorange.jpg The application is available on app store but you need to have a subscription to test this application. Whatever, to resume it, we can see video (tv stream video) in a reduce mode and if we click on the screen it switch to a full screen mode. So my question, what i want to do is possible (Orange TV made it) but i wonder the difficulty to make it. It seems that I have to make a video player. If it take a bunch of time, I tkink I will use Media Player Framework of iPhone even isn't the optimal solution for me. Feel free to ask me more details ;) Thank you for your answers.

  In my \drawable-mdpi folder, I have an image named: test.jpg In my main.xml file, in my LinearLayout section, I have: <ImageView android:id="@+id/test_image" android:src="@drawable/test" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" /> In my src folder, I have only 1 file, HelloAndroidActivity.java with only the following method: public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); ImageView image = new ImageView(this); image = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.test_image); setContentView(image); } This seems to be correct, yet whenever I try to run it, I get The application HelloAndroid (process xxxxx) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. The strange part is it previously did display the image, but now it won't and I don't know why. Also, when I comment out the ImageDisplay code, and replace it with TextDisplay code. i.e. TextView tv = new TextView(this); tv.setText("Does this work?"); setContentView(tv); It does display the text.   Before 1999, I heard about computer. But, I don't know what it look like. TV? Maybe! Before 2001, I only saw it in book. It looks like a TV. Before 2005, I touched it in reality. It still looks like a TV + Black Box. In 2005, I entered university. I had a cource about Mathematica.I loved programming since then. In 2006, I owned a computer. I was coding C every day. if...else..., for..., while..., switch... entered my life. Since 2007, I have learned Data Structures, Algorithms...Then, C#, Java, Python, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, F#... A lot of languages. I'm still learning new lang. Unfortunately, I only know syntax! I'm always a novice(??)! I know some guru start programming at age of 8 or 12. I admire these gurus who are compiler writers, language designers, architecture designers, Linux hackers... Is it possible to become a guru like me. If possible, how? what should I do now? • Using Gtk.TreeDragSource.drag_data_get()

  I have a simple Gtk.TreeView with a Gtk.ListStore with four columns as the model. I want to be able to drag and drop rows within the TreeView and track row insertions, changes and deletions as they happen so I can implement undo/redo to drag and drop operations. I'm using PyGObject 3 and Python 3.2. I thought that using methods under the Gtk.TreeDragSource and Gtk.TreeDragDest interfaces would suit my needs perfectly, with Gtk.TreeDragSource.drag_data_get() in my drag_data_get handler and Gtk.TreeDragDest.drag_data_received() or Gtk.tree_get_row_drag_data() in my drag_data_received handler. • Toshiba Satellite laptop connected to HDTV

  I have a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6014 laptop running Windows 7 64-bit connected to a Toshiba Regza 42" HDTV with an HDMI cable. The laptop has a 16" display and the screen resolution is set to the maximum/recommended of 1366x768. The display output is set to "LCD+HDMI". The display looks fine on the laptop screen but on the TV it is not a "full screen" display, it leaves a good 3" black border all around all 4 edges. When I switch the display to "HDMI only", it is now too big for the TV screen and some of my desktop icons are no longer visible off to the side. What is the best way to set this up? I guess that since a 16" and 42" displays have different native resolutions, a LCD+HDMI mode is defaulting to the optimal size for the 16". But when I set it to HDMI Only, what is the appropriate resolution for a 42" full screen display? Thanks

• Disable laptop screen

  I recently had the display fail on my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop. I currently have my TV hooked up to the laptop's S-Video out which works fine as long as I'm running in Windows. For the first minute or so when the computer is booting I get no display. I was wondering if there was any way to disable the laptop screen entirely so that the TV display is active from the beginning (not just after Windows loads). I realize there may be a BIOS setting for this, my only problem is I can't see the BIOS settings screen since no display is active at that point so if anyone has any BIOS setting solutions I'd need the exact keystrokes to hit :)

  I recently bought one of these USB headsets against my own better judgement, and it's really costing my sanity at this point. Previously when using a standard jack, I just used a splitter so I could split off the things I was doing with my TV or headset, I could just turn the TV off or the headset volume down should I want to use one at a time. Now, along comes this USB headset and I find that I can't choose for the sound of 1 application to pipe to 2 different devices on Windows; How can I solve this? Does any software out there exist for this purpose?

• Why does 1080p through a VGA cable fit my HDTV but is oversized when through an HDMI cable?

  I have put together a new PC with a XFX GeForce GTX 260 graphics card and have it connected to my HDTV. First, I used an old VGA cable with a DVI to VGA adapter and plugged it in to my HDTV's VGA port. Running at 1920x1080 it fit the screen perfectly. Now, to avoid running another cable across the room, I have connected it with a DVI to HDMI cable to my TV's HDMI port, and the desktop at 1920x1080 is cropped by the edge of the screen. I have "fixed" the cropping by using NVIDIA's "Adjust desktop size and position" tool, which created a screen resolution of 1814x1022 to fit the screen, but this is no longer the TV's native resolution and confuses some software (e.g. WoW). Why does VGA work as expected, but HDMI is scaled up? Can it be avoided?
