• What's a good way to copy files from a PC to a Windows Mobile device?

  I have a C# application running on a server, and it needs to copy files out to multiple Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. These devices are connected to the network directly via Ethernet-enabled cradles (so they are not connected to a PC via ActiveSync). What different options do I have for doing this? I know RAPI can do this, but I'm not sure if it can copy something directly over the network like this. Also, I know RAPI uses ActiveSync DLLs and thus requires ActiveSync to be installed, and we would prefer to avoid doing this if possible. Is WMI a possibility? Can we use ordinary File.IO if we can somehow get the IP address of each device? Code samples or general knowledge would be most welcome.

• C# and MySQL .NET Connector - Any way of preventing SQL Injection attacks in a generic class?

  My idea is to create some generic classes for Insert/Update/Select via a C# (3.5) Winforms app talking with a MySQL database via MySQL .NET Connector 6.2.2. For example: public void Insert(string strSQL) { if (this.OpenConnection() == true) { MySqlCommand cmd = new MySqlCommand(strSQL, connection); cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); this.CloseConnection(); } } Then from anywhere in the program I can run a query with/without user input by just passing a SQL query string. Reading around on SO is starting to give me the indication that this may lead to SQL injection attacks (for any user-input values). Is there anyway of scrubbing the inputted strSQL or do I need to go and create individual parameterized queries in every method that needs to do a database function?

• Is it legal and ethical to reverse engineer software to port it to another system?

  I love gaming, I love games that allow modding and I love linux. But the fact that most games right now are targeted for windows (consoles aside), most mods and modding tools are also targeted for windows. There is a certain modder called Boris Vorontsov that makes a famous visual overhaul mod series called ENB. What he does (or I think he does) is he enhances or changes the behavior of classes defined in the d3d9.dll library. Needless to say it almost never works under wine. Recently I have asked him if he would ever release his version of the library under some open license, and he said "no". Now that I think of it, even if he did release his code, he would have surely faced some legal problems. Now there is my question. Is it legal and ethical to reverse engineer his version of the library to adapt the wine's open source version of d3d9.dll to be able to run his mods?

• Fastest way to get up to speed on webapp development with ASP.NET?

  I'm trying to get better at C# ASP.NET 3.5 development (...no none of that MVC stuff :), and fast! My boss gave me a book to read on it from Wrox, but the thing reads like a history novel, telling you how things worked as far back as ASP.NET 1.0; The web application we are developing is completely in ASP.NET 3.5 so I don't need to read through any of the history (maybe I'm wrong about that...but I don't really have the time to read about that...) Do you have any suggestions for a faster (book, series of tutorials) to come up to speed on it? I'd like to learn about UI components, database access, etc... P.S. In a previous position I was an JSP/J2EE developer (and I used MVC all the time! :-D) P.S.S. I did take a course on it in 2008 at some point, but it seemed all very pointy and clickly. I wanna learn the code stuff! The how it works, and where the events are!

• Configure IPv6 on your Linux system (Ubuntu)

  After the presentation on IPv6 at the first event of the Emtel Knowledge Series and some recent discussion on social media networks with other geeks and Linux interested IT people here in Mauritius, I thought that I should give it a try (finally) and tweak my local network infrastructure. Honestly, I have been to busy with contractual project work and it never really occurred to me to set up IPv6 in my LAN. Well, the following paragraphs are going to shed some light on those aspects of modern computer and network technology. This is the first article in a series on IPv6 configuration: Configure IPv6 on your Linux system DHCPv6: Provide IPv6 information in your local network Enabling DNS for IPv6 infrastructure Accessing your web server via IPv6 Piece of advice: This is based on my findings on the internet while reading other people's helpful articles and going through a couple of man-pages on my local system. Let's embrace IPv6 The basic configuration on Linux is actually very simple as the kernel, operating system, and user-space programs support that protocol natively. If your system is ready to go for IP (aka: IPv4), then you are good to go for anything else. At least, I didn't have to install any additional packages on my system(s). We are going to assign a static IPv6 address to the system. Hence, we have to modify the definition of interfaces and check whether we have an inet6 entry specified. Open your favourite text editor and check the following entries (it should be at least similar to this): $ sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces auto eth0# IPv4 configurationiface eth0 inet static  address 192.168.1.2  network 192.168.1.0  netmask 255.255.255.0  broadcast 192.168.1.255# IPv6 configurationiface eth0 inet6 static  pre-up modprobe ipv6  address 2001:db8:bad:a55::2  netmask 64 Of course, you might have to adjust your interface device (eth0) or you might be interested to have multiple directives for additional devices (eth1, eth2, etc.). The auto instruction takes care that your device is enabled and configured during the booting phase. The use of the pre-up directive depends on your kernel configuration but in most scenarios this might be an optional line. Anyways, it doesn't hurt to have it enabled after all - just to be on the safe side. Next, either restart your network subsystem like so: $ sudo service networking restart Or you might prefer to do it manually with identical parameters, like so: $ sudo ifconfig eth0 inet6 add 2001:db8:bad:a55::2/64 In case that you're logged in remotely into your PC (ie. via ssh), it is highly advised to opt for the second choice and add the device manually. You can check your configuration afterwards with one of the following commands (depends on whether it is installed): $ sudo ifconfig eth0eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:21:5a:50:d7:94            inet addr:192.168.160.2  Bcast:192.168.160.255  Mask:255.255.255.0          inet6 addr: fe80::221:5aff:fe50:d794/64 Scope:Link          inet6 addr: 2001:db8:bad:a55::2/64 Scope:Global          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1 $ sudo ip -6 address show eth03: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qlen 1000    inet6 2001:db8:bad:a55::2/64 scope global        valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever    inet6 fe80::221:5aff:fe50:d794/64 scope link        valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever In both cases, it confirms that our network device has been assigned a valid IPv6 address. That's it in general for your setup on one system. But of course, you might be interested to enable more services for IPv6, especially if you're already running a couple of them in your IP network. I'm working on more screencasts like that, from different angles. For example, one will methodically explain each and every window in NetBeans IDE; another will step through the creation of an application from conception to deployment; while another will focus on the NetBeans IDE extension points and how easily they can be used to add new features to NetBeans IDE. The screencast approach has, I think, a lot of advantages. They take less time to make and they seem to be more effective, in several ways, than tutorials. Hearing someone talk through a scenario seems to also put things in a clearer perspective than when you have everything written out in a document, where small details get lost and diversions are more difficult to make. • Drupal - no self-linking

  So, I've added several pages to my Drupal install and linking to the pages using URL aliases via the Path module. So far so good - http://mydrupal/node/1 becomes http://mydrupal/about which is exactly what I'm looking for. Then I'm adding these links to the primary navigation and outputting the primary links via a custom theme (copy and paste the primary link code from the Chameleon theme). Here's the problem: when viewing http://mydrupal/about the page links to itself - that is the "About" link at http://mydrupal/about is still linking to http://mydrupal/about - the behavior I'm looking for is to have the "About" text display without a link. In summary: how do I prevent self-linking of pages when displaying the primary navigation?

  Hello I'm trying to understand how DI exactly works. I'm currently using Windsor as DI container. I use this to load my services dynamically in code without direct reference. But I have change behaviour and want to know a bit more on the instance mgmt using DI. I have a web app projct, here is a WCF service using PerCall as instancemode. This means, new instance/call. In this WCF I call a service (loaded via DI) and this service calls another service (again loaded via DI). The WCF is a new instance in the appdomain, but what about the services. They are also new instances? Is this DI container shared among all WCF instances and are the services in this container also single instances? Can anyone clarify?

  "Abstract class" and "interface" are similar type of ideas, while interface being more abstract. One need of abstract classes was to provide method implementations for the derived classes. But in C#, that need has also been reduced by lately introduced extension methods. So, in C#, when should we use abstract classes instead of using interfaces and extension methods associated with the interface? And now, we can use 'Properties' in interfaces also. A notable example of interface+ extension methods is the Heavily used IEnumerable and it's helper methods. You use Linq and it's all by this extension methods!

• "Unable to create OpenGL 3.3 context (flags 0, profile 1)"

  Trying to run any of the well-known McKesson's tutorials on a friend's laptop results in the aforementioned exception. I read that in order to run applications which use OpenGL 3.3 you must at least have an ATI HD or Nvidia 8xxx GPU series. He has an ATI HD class graphics processor which eliminates (maybe) this issue. Also, I read that this error may result in having old drivers. He updated his drivers but that didn't solve the problem. The tutorials are built as said in the book introduction and glsdk is installed. If more information is needed, say so and I will provide it. What are the other reasons for this kind of exception? And how can I fix them?

• Drupal 5: CCK fields in custom content type

  I have module that implements custom content type via NodeAPI hooks (hook_insert, hook_update etc). I want to add CCK field to this content type and populate it via hook_nodeapi calls like create or update (to show content nodes in Views). Problem is, I cannot access CCK fields for this content type. Sure, it's enabled on "Manage Fields" page, but when I load any node of this type with Devel module, I cannot see field attribute (field_flag) in node object. I can see it under "Dev Render" tab as part of "content" attribute, like $node-content['field_flag']['#value'], but if I assign value to $node-field_flag or $node-content['field_flag']['#value'] and call node_save, CCK fields are not saved. Maybe I must call some other function to save CCK fields? Or what may be wrong with this setup?

• how to reinstall ubuntu 12.04 after dual boot installation fails with windows 7

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my preinstalled windows 7 Sony vaio s series laptop following instructions here: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/05/17/how-to-dual-boot-ubuntu-12-04-and-windows-7/ Everything went well and I am able to boot in to windows after complete installation of Ubuntu. Now following instructions on web I tried to add Ubuntu to my BIOS using Easy BCD (but forget to add windows 7 entry). As a result, I loose windows 7 OS and can't boot in to either OS then I successfully repaired windows 7 using recovery CD. Now my problem is that I can't reinstall Ubuntu 12.04 using Live CD it halts every time before disk partition step giving error. There is only one partition which corresponds to windows 7 but I don't know whether the Ubuntu is still there or probably corrupted. So, how to repair it or again install ubuntu ? Please suggest what I should do now? Thanks in advance. R Shukla

• Launching an external application from within a NPAPI Plugin

  I am trying to work out why an NPAPI plugin I have written, which works fine in terms of performing operations triggered via Javascipt calls, cannot use CreateProcess() or ShellExecute() to launch an application from a path specified via the Javascript call. I can seemingly use either of these methods and they return success, i.e. no error code. But the application just does not launch. I have tried modifying the parameters used when calling them, to create new process group etc. But seemingly with no effect. I know this may seem like a bit of a security risk, but for the very specific purpose we wish to use it for it shouldn't be a problem. Thanks.
