  • MonoTouch - has anyone used this?

    Hi folks, I'm a .NET developer trying to make the leap into objective-c iPhone programming. I created my first app - just a simple portfolio with multiple xibs. Currently, I'm developing an web-based IM-Chat through node.js (the server-side Javascript). If I were to post this or other projects on Github or on Google Code, could this be considered community service?—to the programming community?

  • "Server Unavailable" and removed permissions on .NET sites after Windows Update

    Our company has five almost identical Windows 2003 servers with the same host, and all but one performed an automatic Windows Update last night without issue. The one that had problems, of course, was the one which hosts the majority of our sites. What the update appeared to do was cause the NETWORK user to stop having access to the .NET Framework 2.0 files, as the event log was complaining about not being able to open System.Web. This resulted in every .NET site on the server returning "Server Unavailable" as the App Domains failed to be initialise. I ran aspnet_regiis which didn't appear to fix the problem, so I ran FileMon which revealed that nobody but the Administrators group had access to any files in any of the website folders! After resetting the permissions, things appear to be fine. I was wondering if anyone had an idea of what could have caused this to go wrong? As I say, the four other servers updated without a problem. Are there any known issues involved with any of the following updates? My major suspect at the moment is the 3.5 update as all of the sites on the server are running in 3.5.   • Have minimized windows with a unique icon/color?

    Are there any programs or way to get a specific icon or any icon for that matter into a minimized window? The reason why I ask is that I hate having 3 or more windows of the same program minimized on my taskbar using the same icon. When I want to open up the program i'm not sure which window to activate. -edit I'm asking for a program to do this for me, not a programming technique

  • Backing up server and multiple clients

    I'm running a Amahi server. It's basically a Fedora14 x64 installation. I'm looking for a good solution to backup my 200GB system drive on the server to an external USB/eSATA drive every night. I looked into using dd but since other things might be running on the server at the same time it didn't feel quite safe. I would like the backups to be incremental so the following backups after the initial one would be quite fast. The backup should also be bootable or prehaps be able to produce a bootable disk after booting from a CD or something. I would also like the server to be able to do similar backups of my clients running Ubuntu, Windows 7 x64, Windows 7 Starter, OSX Lion, Windows XP and so on. So no applications backing up only shared folders or something like that. My guess is a client daemon would have to exist that would lock the system to allow backup of a Windows system drive that can otherwise be quite cranky. Booting up a CD in a crashed client and connecting to the server restoring the latest backup and being up running is my ideal goal. Is there anything out there that would fit these needs?

  • Trap error or 'Resume Next'

    I realise this is an older programming environment, but I have to clean up some VB6 code and I am finding that most of it uses: Resume Next What is the general consensus about the use of Resume Next? Surely, if there is an error, you would want the app to stop what it was doing, rollback any data changes, and inform the user of the error, rather than just resuming. When is it good idea to use Resume?

  • Is browser based wireless authentication secure?

    Our wireless network previously used a preshared WPA/WPA2 key for guest access, which allows them access to the Internet. (Our employee access uses 802.1x authentication). We just had a wireless consultant come in to fix various wireless issues we had; one of the things he wound up doing was changing our guest access to HTML-based instead of the preshared key. So now that guest SSID is open (instead of using WPA) and users are presented with a browser-based login screen before they can get on the Internet. My question is: Is this an acceptable method from a security standpoint? I would assume that having an open network is necessarily a bad idea, but the consultant said that the traffic is still using PEAP, so it's secure. I didn't get a chance to question him further on this because we ran late and a bunch of other things came up. Please let me know what you think about the advantages/disadvantages of using HTML-based wireless authentication as opposed to using a preshared WPA key. Thanks...

  • Dell Studio 1555 not starting up

    This is a 3-year-old laptop. I never had a big problem with it until now. I updated Kubuntu the night before yesterday. And Firefox got updated to version 18 and a few other related packages got updated. Then I shut down the laptop and restarted it, but it failed to start. I could hear the fan and the hard disk and the optical disk drive initialize. And the power button also lighted up. But there was no video - no POST or BIOS menu. I even opened the laptop up to the point when only the motherboard was the only thing attached to the base cover. I took it to the technician this evening. He checked it casually, and said that it might be a motherboard problem and will cost quite a bit to fix. Though he was not sure and said that he will give me a call after confirming the problem. Has anyone else had the same problem? What was it and what was the fix?

I've been working on a Office automation project and find it frustrating to work with Powerpoint in particular since it seems to be one level below VBA support found in Excel or Word. It feels like MS is trying to phase out support for VBA in PPT since they dropped macro recording in version 2007 and the object model lacks some key features support.

    Hello people, I have three images,and , they are not square or rectangular in shape. They are just like face of anyone. So, basically, my images are in the size 196x196 or anything like that, but complete square or rectangle with the face in the middle and transperant background in the rest of the portion. Now, I want to remove the transperant background too and just keep the faces. Don't know if this is possible and mind you, this isn't a programming question.
