  • Using VLANs/subnetting to separate management from services?

    Background: I recently purchased a server and a managed switch for my home in the hopes of getting more experience and some fun toys to play with. The devices and appliances I either have or plan to have cover a broad spectrum: router, DD-WRT AP, Dell switch, OpenLDAP server, FreeRADIUS server, OpenVPN gateway, home PCs, gaming consoles, etc. I intend to segment my network with VLANs and associated subnets (e.g., VID10 is populated by devices on 192.168.10.0/24). The idea is to secure the more sensitive appliances by forcing traffic through my router/FW. Setup: After thinking and planning for some time, I have tentatively decided on 4 VLANs: one for the WAN connection, one for servers, one for home/personal devices, and one for management. In theory, the home VLAN will have limited access to the servers, and the management VLAN will be totally isolated for security. Question: Since I want to restrict access to management interfaces, but some appliances have to be accessible to other devices, is it possible/wise to have only management (SSH, HTTP, RDP) available on one VLAN/IP and only services (LDAP, DHCP, RADIUS, VPN) available on other? Is this a thing that is done? Does it gain me the security I think it does, or hurt me in some way?

    I have tried 10 different emails hosted at Google, Yahoo!, GoDaddy, and some that are privately hosted, and each time I get the following errors. I have blocked sensitive information, but you will be able to see the errors.     Before you point me to Google or serverfault search I want to tell you that I've searched a lot, did some "fixes". They didn't help. I have ISPConfig 3 installed on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Server The server has several domains and lets call the main domain: example.com. I have also demo.com I have several emails on each domain. The status of the email sent between the emails: [email protected] - [email protected] (Success) [email protected] - [email protected] (Failure) The failure is with error: postfix/pipe[31311]: 8E72ED058D: to=<[email protected]>, relay=dovecot, delay=0.1, delays=0.03/0/0/0.07, dsn=5.1.1, status=bounced (user unknown) I saw the fix for removing the example.com from: mydestination = localhost, localhost.localdomain in /etc/postfix/main.cf It didn't help. Also an important thing is that the example.com MX records are Google's. We are using Google Apps for this domain in order to use Gmail servers. I think the problem is that the mail server is not looking for the MX records of the domain. It knows the domain is set on this server and it searches for the destination email on the local server, not on Google's servers. For several days I'm really lost! Thanks for your help in advance!

  • Still getting duplicate token error after calling DuplicateTokenEx for impersonated token

    I'm trying to return a Sytem.IntPtr from a service call so that the client can use impersonation to call some code. My imersonation code works properly if not passing the token back from a WCF service. I'm not sure why this is not working. I get the following error: "Invalid token for impersonation - it cannot be duplicated." According to the MSDN documentation I read here I should be able to create a token valid for delegation and use across the context on remote systems.   • Sharing large (multi-Gb) files with clients

    I wasn't sure if this was the best place for this question, but I think it is squarely in the realm of the IT admin so that's the reason I put it here. We need to share large files (several Gigabytes) with external clients. We need a simple way of reliably and automatically publishing these files so that clients can then download them. Our organization has Windows desktops and a Windows SBS 2011 server. Sharing from our server is probably suboptimal from the client's perspective, because of the low upstream bandwidth of typical ADSL (around 1 Mbps) - it would take all day (9 hours for a 4Gb file) for the client to download the file. Uploading to a 3rd party sever is good for the client but painful for us, because we then have to deal with a multi-hour upload. Uploading to a third-part server would be less problematic if it could be made reliable and automatic, e.g. something like a Groove/SharePoint Workspace, simply drop the file in and wait for it to synchronize - but Groove has a 2Gb limit which is not big enough. So ideally I'd like a service with the following attributes: Must work for files of at least 5Gb, preferably 10Gb Once the transfer is started, it must be reliable (i.e. not sensitive to disconnections and service outages) and completely automatic Ideally, the sender would get a notification when the transfer completes. Has to work with Windows based systems. Any suggestions?

    Good day to all; I'm developing a program using JSF2 and JPA2 (OpenJPA). Im also using IBM Rapid App Dev't v8 with WebSphere App Server v8 test server. I have two simple entities, Employee and Department. Each Department has many Employees and each Employee belongs to a Department (using deptno and workdept).   • Weird Apache Crash (with Dump) zend_hash_find (), libphp5.so

    To be honest I don't have experience working with Apache. I'm just putting the best of my intentions on solving this and don't know if I'm making it right. So any help will be greatly appreciated. We have a php page wich is throwing the following message in the browser: Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data. The logs from /var/log/httpd doesn't seem to help because It seems that the Apache is unable to write any information. So the exception or error is preventing the writing (maybe ocurring in some stage of the process that makes impossible to log?). I've read about the procedure to make dumps of the apache, and here we have the content: Reading symbols from /lib64/libgpg-error.so.0...(no debugging symbols found)...done.   • Lock down Wiki access to password only but remain open to a subnet via .htaccess

    Basically we have a Wiki that has some sensitive information stored in it - not the best I know but my predecessor set it up. I want to be able to request password access from any one who is not on the local network subnet. Those on the local subnet should be able to proceed without entering a password. The following .htaccess does not seem to work any more as it is letting non-local access without requiring the password: AuthName "Our Wiki" AuthType Basic AuthUserFile /path/to/passwd/file AuthGroupFile /dev/null Require valid-user Allow from 192.168 Satisfy Any order deny,allow And I cannot work out why. The WikkaWiki it is supposed to be protecting was recently upgraded, which clobbered the .htaccess file so I restored the above from memory/googling. Maybe I am missing an important directive?     Is anyone aware of an org-sort function / modification that can refile / organize a group of TODO so that it sorts them by three (3) criteria: first sort by due date, second sort by priority, and third sort by by title of the task? EDIT: I believe that org-sort by deadline (?d) has a bug that cannot properly handle undated tasks. I am working on a workaround (i.e., moving the undated todo to a different heading before the deadline (?d) sort occurs), but perhaps the best thing to do would be to try and fix the original sorting function.   • What is the most likely cause to a Blue Screen of Death when the user presses Ctrl-Alt-Delete?

    My wife is experiencing this with her work laptop--she presses Ctrl-Alt-Delete to lock and she gets the BSOD. The first troubleshooting step is usually to "re-image", and it's locked down. So with this question, I am asking whether the behavior is unique enough that someone in the stack-universe knows exactly what this is (something I can tell her to tell her help desk support). Update: help desk said to order more RAM. Alt-tabbing caused the same behavior today. And...she learned that multiple users are affected. I'm not sure I'll be able to clean any additional info that will help w/ troubleshooting. I'll leave the question here for a bit and if an answer ends up being the actual solution, I'll accept it. If not, I think I should probably remove the question (i'll check meta). Update #2.5: The cause appears to be a ctrl-alt-delete keystroke while Sales Team Configurator is open. This can either be to lock the screen (there are workaround in answers already present) or to unlock the screen (no workaround for that).

  • Time not propagating to machines on Windows domain

    We have a two-domain Active Directory forest: ourcompany.com at the root, and prod.ourcompany.com for production servers. Time is propagating properly through the root domain, but servers in the child domain are unable to sync via NTP. So the time on these servers is starting to drift, since they're relying only on the hardware clock. WHen I type "net time" on one of the production servers, I get the following error: Could not locate a time-server. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3912. When I type "w32tm /resync", i get the following: Sending resync command to local computer The computer did not resync because no time data was available. "w32tm /query /source" shows the following: Free-running System Clock We have three domain controllers in the prod.ourcompany.com subdomain (overkill, but the result of a migration - we haven't gotten rid of one of the old ones yet.) To complicate matters, the domain controllers are all virtualized, running on two different physical hosts. But the time on the domain controllers themselves is accurate - the servers that aren't DCs are the ones having problems. Two of the DCs are running Server 2003, including the PDC emulator. The third DC is running Server 2008. (I could move the PDC emulator role to the 2008 machine if that would help.) The non-DC servers are all running Server 2008. All other Active Directory functionality works fine in the production domain - we're only seeing problems with NTP. I can manually sync each machine to the time source (the PDC emulator) by doing the following: net time \\dc1.prod.ourcompany.com /set /y But this is just a one-off, and it doesn't cause automated time syncing to start working. I guess I could create a scheduled task which runs the above command periodically, but I'm hoping there's a better way. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this isn't working, and what we can do to fix it? Thanks for your help, Richard

  • Inbound SIP calls through Cisco 881 NAT hang up after a few seconds

    I've recently moved to a Cisco 881 router for my WAN link. I was previously using a Cisco Linksys WAG320N as my modem/router/WiFi AP/NAT firewall. The WAG320N is now running in bridged mode, so it's simply acting as a modem with one of it's LAN ports connected to FE4 WAN on my Cisco 881. The Cisco 881 get's a DHCP provided IP from my ISP. My LAN is part of default Vlan 1 (192.168.1.0/24). General internet connectivity is working great, I've managed to setup static NAT rules for my HTTP/HTTPS/SMTP/etc. services which are running on my LAN. I don't know whether it's worth mentioning that I've opted to use NVI NAT (ip nat enable as opposed to the traditional ip nat outside/ip nat inside) setup. My reason for this is that NVI allows NAT loopback from my LAN to the WAN IP and back in to the necessary server on the LAN. I run an Asterisk 1.8 PBX on my LAN, which connects to a SIP provider on the internet. Both inbound and outbound calls through the old setup (WAG320N providing routing/NAT) worked fine. However, since moving to the Cisco 881, inbound calls drop after around 10 seconds, whereas outbound calls work fine. The following message is logged on my Asterisk PBX: [Dec 9 15:27:45] WARNING[27734]: chan_sip.c:3641 retrans_pkt: Retransmission timeout reached on transmission [email protected] for seqno 1 (Critical Response) -- See https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/SIP+Retransmissions Packet timed out after 6528ms with no response [Dec 9 15:27:45] WARNING[27734]: chan_sip.c:3670 retrans_pkt: Hanging up call [email protected] - no reply to our critical packet (see https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/SIP+Retransmissions). (I know that this is quite a common issue - I've spend the best part of 2 days solid on this, trawling Google.) I've done as I am told and checked https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/SIP+Retransmissions. Referring to the section "Other SIP requests" in the page linked above, I believe that the hangup to be caused by the ACK from my SIP provider not being passed back through NAT to Asterisk on my PBX. I tried to ascertain this by dumping the packets on my WAN interface on the 881. I managed to obtain a PCAP dump of packets in/out of my WAN interface. Here's an example of an ACK being reveived by the router from my provider: 689 21.219999 193.x.x.x 188.x.x.x SIP 502 Request: ACK sip:[email protected] | However a SIP trace on the Asterisk server show's that there are no ACK's received in response to the 200 OK from my PBX: http://pastebin.com/wwHpLPPz In the past, I have been strongly advised to disable any sort of SIP ALGs on routers and/or firewalls and the many posts regarding this issue on the internet seem to support this. However, I believe on Cisco IOS, the config command to disable SIP ALG is no ip nat service sip udp port 5060 however, this doesn't appear to help the situation. To confirm that config setting is set: Router1#show running-config | include sip no ip nat service sip udp port 5060 Another interesting twist: for a short period of time, I tried another provider. Luckily, my trial account with them is still available, so I reverted my Asterisk config back to the revision before I integrated with my current provider. I then dialled in to the DDI associated with the trial trunk and the call didn't get hung up and I didn't get the error above! To me, this points at the provider, however I know, like all providers do, will say "There's no issues with our SIP proxies - it's your firewall." I'm tempted to agree with this, as this issue was not apparent with the old WAG320N router when it was doing the NAT'ing. I'm sure you'll want to see my running-config too: ! !   • How to connect to local instance of SQL Server 2008 Express

    I just installed SQL Server 2008 Express on my windows 7 machine. I previously had 2005 on here and used it just fine with the old SQL Server Management Studio Express. I was able to connect with no problems to my PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS instance. I uninstalled 2005 and SQL Server Management Studio Express. I then installed SQL Server 2008 Express on my machine and elected to have it install SQL Server Management Studio. Now, when I try to connect to PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS (with Windows Authentication, like I always did), I get the following message: Cannot connect to PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1) For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=-1&LinkId=20476 When I went to the help link it mentions, the help page suggests the following: * Make sure that the SQL Server Browser service is started on the server. * Use the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool to enable SQL Server to accept remote connections. For more information about the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration Tool, see Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections. I did try starting the SQL Server Browser, but don't see that the Surface Area Configuration is installed with this express version. I had seen another user with an almost exact same issue that was missing the database engine on install. If that were the case how could i test for that and where would i go to download that install.
