• Realtek audio AC 97 5.1 on Windows 7: Terrible subwoofer quality

  I have a media center PC with on-board Realtek AC97 Audio. I have been using Windows XP for a couple of years with great audio quality. I just upgraded this PC with Windows 7 and installed the latest Realtek drivers from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/ At the testing screen, all the speakers works correctly (including subwoofer). Despite that, while playing any movie or music, the subwoofer quality is terrible. From it it just comes noises, in the correct rhythm but quite low and quite out of tone. I compensated the loudness by putting the other speakers lower but the sound of the subwoofer is really terrible. Is there anyone facing the same problem? Does anyone have a workaround for that? PS.: I had gone past the steps given in Terrible noises from subwoofer of ACER Aspire 6930 with Realtek sound chip but still I have a bad quality of sound. • Windows 7 does not recognise second display output

  I've got a PC with dual BenQ G2222HDL monitors and an ATI Radeon HD 4650 video card. I've been running both monitors at 1920x1080 for some months now but last week the second monitor switched to a lower resolution and won't let me go back to 1920x1080. If I right click the Desktop and choose Screen Resolution from the menu, I get two items in the Display: drop down list BenQ G2222HDL D-SUB Display device on: VGA In the past 2 was always the same as 1. If I click Detect a third item appears Available display output on: ATI Radeon HD 4650 but if I use the Multiple displays: drop down list to use it says "No display detected" and then lets me choose from either "Connect anyway on S-Video" or "Connect anyway on Component", neither of which help. It seems like Windows 7 recognises the card is dual-head, and knows I have got two monitors, but can't link it all together. I have checked and all my drivers are up-to-date. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get the second monitor working properly again?

• Mac OS X - rmdir fails with "Operation not permitted" for a folder created by a PC on a removable dr

  Hello. I have a problem (using Mac OS X 10.5.8) with the access rights of a folder that was presumably created by a virus on a disk-on-key drive when I used it with a PC. I can't remove the folder or change it's name. In Finder's Info window the Lock box is unchecked and uncheckable - if I try to check it it flips back to off. • Fast user switching is logging users off instead of switching users

  I have a netbook running Windows 8.1 Pro that will no longer allow more than one user to be logged in at the same time. The steps necessary to reproduce this are as follows: The current user presses WIN to bring up the start screen. The user clicks his name in the corner and a list of other users appears. As soon as one of the other names is clicked, the user is unceremoniously logged off without any prompts. This behavior seems to have started some time after upgrading to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8. Before that point, everything worked fine and more than one user could be logged in at the same time. I've tried searching for others experiencing similar problems but this appears to be unique. • HD Video Capture Card w/ Good API?

  Does anyone here know of a good HD video capture card that has a good (comprehensive) API? I administer a few servers that do some video encoding right now, but when we make the switch to HD cameras, they won't be sufficient. In addition to this, the servers we have now are black boxes, closed to me except to start/stop the video capture device. I'd like to be able to roll my own, so we can better integrate it with our existing systems, but I know almost nothing about what kind of HD capture cards are out there, and if I can avoid spending money just to test their APIs that would rock. So does anyone have any experience with this? All our other software is in C#, and I'd like to set up the new servers with web interfaces to start/stop the capture (also in C#, using .NET 3.5 probably). I'm not sure how language specific these APIs would be, but that's what I'm working with just as a reference point. I appreciate any help the community can give!

• Ubuntu not connecting to network in Hyper-V

  I am unable to connect the Ubuntu guest (both 12.10 and 12.04) to the internet via hyper-V. Here is what I have done so far (with much thanks due to @Kronos's blog post on the topic): Created a switch in the switch manager with connection set to external, selected my wifi card (Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN). If it matters, the Microsoft Filtering Platform is checked under extensions. Added this switch to my Ubuntu guest. I also tried a different wireless card (Aethros 9285) same issue. Connecting through my wired card works just fine (assume that I select that card, and I am wired in of course). Making it a legacy network adapter does not fix the issue. Ubuntu can see this connection, but is unable to connect to it. What follows is what I attempted to do to get Ubuntu to connect: Start and restart the network manager Restart the machine Verify that it could in fact see the adapter (resulted in device not ready a few times) How can I get this to work properly?

• Second partition with Windows 7 unmountable

  I'm using GRUB2 to dualboot Ubuntu and Windows 7. I installed Windows 7 some days ago and rewrote GRUB2 to cope with the dualboot. Everything went fine till yesterday - I could boot into both OS. Since this morning my laptop restarts every time I choose Windows 7 from the menu. Ubuntu is still working. As I tried to mount the partition with Windows 7 on Ubuntu it gave me return code 2, so this isn't working as well. I tried to reinstall GRUB2 to the MBR but it didn't help. I also tried to repair Windows 7 boot with it's install DVD, while trying so it showed me the following error: "Status: 0xc000000f Info: Boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible."   For the life of me, I can't figure out how to create an ad hoc wireless network in Windows 8. Here is what happens if I follow the steps from Windows 7: Right click the network icon and click "Network and Sharing Center": Click "Set up a new connection or network": Where is the option to create an ad hoc network? Therefore I have two related questions: Did I miss something? Is it in there somewhere and I just haven't found it yet? If this feature is not available, is there a tool somewhere I can use that provides this capability? Further information: I have an Intel Wireless WiFi 4965 AGN adapter. I tried the Intel PRO wireless tool and it didn't offer an ad hoc option.

• How do I use an internal SSD as a scratch disk for FCP X?

  I'm contemplating setting up my MacBook Air as a video editing machine. If I do this, I'll upgrade to a 256 GB SSD, and I should be able to keep around 100 GB or more free for video editing. The video files would of course be stored externally, but save purchasing some expensive Thunderbolt RAID device (which I suppose is gradually becoming more of an option), it will be slow for read/writes. How can I have a set up where I take advantage of my SSD's speed for a scratch disk/cache for FCP X, but still have the TB(s) of storage of externals? I don't want to have to be moving files constantly back and forth, this is about saving time not wasting it.

  I have Windows 7 Home Premium Blackberry Curve 9300 6.0 bundle 1478 (v6.0.0.380, platform 6.6.0.86) desktop software 6.0.0.380 I was able to connect with desktop software version 5 but 6 does not work. I am able to connect to the internet just fine with the device itself (ie can browse the web). How can I debug this? update: here's the error message: when i try to connect i get the message "failed to start mobile internet. the specified port is not open. please check your profile settings and make sure your radio is turned on. this service might also have been turned off by your wireless service provider or your administrator"

• Wireless Access Point - Can't ping other machines on the wireless network

  I have a wireless access point (Netgear), and I have it setup so that it has an IP address in the current subnet (let's say 192.168.2.0, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0). The machine that it is connected to via ethernet cable has an IP in the same subnet as the AP. The machines that are connected to the AP via the wireless connection also have an IP address in the same subnet as the rest of the network (192.168.2.0). All machines can ping the access point, but they cannot ping each other. I don't totally understand why, because there is connection and all of the machines are in the same subnet. I realize this is a layer 3 device, but is there an issue because of this AP's lack of gateway capabilities? (i.e. no routing table, etc.)

• Why do my speakers get distorted randomly on Windows 7?

  I have a studio monitor setup. I have 2 KRK 6's and a Focusrite Firewire Pro 24. Every few hours my speakers sound distorted and my solution has been go to sound levels Properties of Saffire Audio Device Advanced Default Format Toggle to 16 bit then back to 24bit. Why does it screw up every few hours? Sometimes one speaker doesn't output too and this same process resets it but that's more rare. Is this a OS issue or Focusrite Driver Issue?

• /usr/bin/python Replacement

  If I've changed the target of /usr/bin/python from /usr/bin/python2.7 to /usr/bin/python3.2 (I realize this was an ABSOUTELY HORRIBLE idea) in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. Afterwards, several applications, including software-center and update-manager have stopped working. Insofar as I can tell, this is because they are written in Python2.7. I replaced the default /usr/bin/python shebang with the 2.7 one, and this fixes them on the application level. Switching /usr/bin/python back to /usr/bin/python2.7 really isn't an option, but is there a list of all applications installed by default in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS, if installed from a new CD-R, that use a shebang of #!/usr/bin/python instead of #!/usr/bin/pythonX.Y?

• NAS + XBMC combination

  I currently own a WD Sharespace and I am not too happy about it. It will freeze constantly and its rather slow. I've been thinking of replacing it. I also own a WD HD Live, and it works like it is supposed to, but recently I've seen XBMC in action and I was quite impressed. I've been wondering lately about the possibility of replacing both products with one new device: a fast reliable nas which I can install XBMC on and is capable of rendering video and has an HDMI out. Do any such devices exist for sale or is the only way to build one from scratch? I've seen HTPC's for sale but I've never seen any of them with a raid setup. I've also read about building your own NAS with freeNAS but those setups dont allow you to run XBMC. Does anyone have experience with this?

• Network bottleneck/throttling issue

  Hi all, It's my first day at a new company and i've been given the task to find out an issue with the internet connection. I noticed that whilst I was downloading a large file, the network grinds to a halt, except for my download. At first I thought it was the internet connection/modem but it seems that whilst the lockdown occurs, I am unable to access any network device. Has anyone experienced this before and if so, do you have any pointers? Looking at the setup. They have an DSL modem that connects to a 10/100 switch. There are only 5-6 computers on the network. • How do I use wine's new multi-channel audio support?

  Wine supposedly added Multi-channel support to the ALSA driver in a recent release. However, I haven't found any documentation about it or any reports of anyone successfully using it. I have 5.1 surround sound through ALSA (not Pulse) on my linux system, yet games in wine don't seem to use anything more than stereo, no matter which ALSA device I select in winecfg. Can someone explain what must be done to get wine games to use all my speakers for positional audio, or failing that, point me toward some useful documentation on the new multi-channel support?

• Windows 7 won't load unless other harddrives "disconnect"ed in UEFI shell

  I have three disks, one GPT partitioned containing Windows 7 and Debian, the other MBR partitioned containing CentOS, and the other one MBR partitioned, empty. It used to work (loading Windows boot manager using rEFIt) but now after installing CentOS and OpenIndiana on the second drive, Windows won't boot. The logo is displayed briefly and then a text mode scrollbar "Loading files", then back to the rEFIt menu. The only thing that makes it work is if I drop into the UEFI shell and run disconnect XX where XX is the device handle of the other hard drives (obtained from running devices). This makes me think that the bootloader is getting confused about where the Windows partition is. Is there any information on how the Windows UEFI boot loader finds the Windows partition, or is there any logging I can turn on to help troubleshoot this issue?

  We have a sandbox server running CentOS that we run inside our office. Our ISP has assigned us a block of 5 static IPs. We now want to assign it a static IP. When I ifdown eth0 then ifup eth0 I get... SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable When I switch to DCHP, the machine has an IP assigned and there are no connection problems. Any ideas?

• Wireshark (WinPCap) does not see Intel X520-DA2 10 GbE NIC teaming intermittently

However, I see an intermittent issue whereby WireShark and my own application (using WinPCap) only show the underlying ports, failing to recognize the team adapter. • Why only the left speakers are working?

  I've just bought a 5.1 speakers and only the left side speakers and the center are working. If I plug in the speakers to my mp3 player than each speaker is working, so the speakers are good. I have windows 7 and I can't configure it. Please help me! I'm sure that the problem is with some settings at the computer. A while ago I had the same issue with some stereo speakers and I can't remember how I've fixed it, but it was only a setting error. I don`t think that my sound card could be the problem, because it's in-built and I have a new motherboard: asus m2n68-am. I've just tested my computer with some stereo head speakers and also only the left one was working. If I start the speakers very loud than the right speakers are making some noise, too I've connected the speakers with a two channels cable. This is the speakers type: genius sw-hf 5.1 5050 v2

• How can I get data off of a Corsair SSD?

  My Corsair SSD won't work and I have some critical data on it that I didn't back up (I needed to create a copy of my mechanical storage device, just forgot). The drive isn't detected by the OS or BIOS. I also tried it on another system, but all that happened was the OS failed to load (my guess was that it knew the drive was there, just couldn't read it). I tried powering it on without the data cable for a bit of time to see if it'd work again, but it didn't. Any ideas of how I can get the data off of this drive without having to send it in?

Is there anyway that I can create a partition safely? • XFCE: active panel buttons when mouse is on screen edge

  I'm using XFCE 4.6.1 (Xubuntu distribution) on my laptop and main computer; the settings are approximately the same. so far for the intro. What I'm experiencing is that when going to the screen edge over the task bar on the laptop, the button under the mouse is active. On the main machine however, having the mouse on the screen edge, the button below it doesn't react at all! Only if I move the pointer towards the center a bit, the hover highlight starts and the button becomes clickable. I've tried to change the panel size, desktop theme and a few other settings, but none seems to cure that problem. Is there something that causes this problem? (Googling also seems to give no results)

This is part of my isolinux.cfg file: label vesa menu label Install ^RAIDIX system kernel vmlinuz append initrd=initrd.img xdriver=vesa nomodeset text linux ks=cdrom:/isolinux/ks.cfg If I specify parameter ks=cdrom:/isolinux/ks.cfg my iso will boot only from cd or dvd-rom. If I specify parameter ks=hd:<device>:/ks.cfg my iso will boot only from usb-drive. Can I specify ks parameter to boot from both type of installation media?
