  • Are "skip deltas" unique to svn?

    The good folks who created the SVN version control system use a structure they refer to as "skip deltas" to store the revision history of files internally. A revision is stored as a delta against an earlier revision. However, revision N is not necessarily stored as a delta against revision N-1, like this: 0 <- 1 <- 2 <- 3 <- 4 <- 5 <- 6 <- 7 <- 8 <- 9 Instead, revision N is stored as a delta against N-f(N), where f(N) is the greatest power of two that divides N: 0 <- 1 2 <- 3 4 <- 5 6 <- 7 0 <------ 2 4 <------ 6 0 <---------------- 4 0 <------------------------------------ 8 <- 9 (Superficially it looks like a skip list but really it's not that similar - for instance, skip deltas are not interested in supporting insertion in the middle of the list.) You can read more about it here. My question is: Do other systems use skip deltas? Were skip deltas known/used/published before SVN, or did the creators of SVN invent it themselves?

  • Where does Rails get it's datetime for creating records?

    I have a rails app with a data model called 'jobs' and i'm faced with a critical design choice crossroads. I don't know enough about Rails and it's inner workings to be able to say for sure what I should do despite a complete read of the rails and ruby docs. I want to be able to accurately display the age of a job record in days. So when a customer logs in, they can see that the job they submitted is 'x' days old. Where does a rails app on Heroku get it's time stamps? From Heroku? or the customers system clock? If a customer has a out of date system clock and submits a job, it could really mess up the sorting of their job list, not to mention me the overseer of job records. Any advice out there? EDIT: Just to be clear, i'm not asking how to list jobs by their date, but to which clock does a rails app on Heroku base it's records.

  • Search Result Organization

    I'm creating an AJAX live search on a website I'm working on. Users will select values from a few dropdowns and a list of products will be returned based on what they select. Some possible fields would be: color, model, make, etc. What type of organization of search results do users tend to find most useful? Is it better to lump them all together (alphabatized) or is it more useful to lump them together by make? In the past I've tended to group them by "make" but I'm not concerned that this will continually force some items with a make toward the end of the alphabet always to the bottom of the list. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

  • Point and click synonym replacement in text area with Javascript

    I am trying to create a site that will allow you to type a sentence or passage of text, then click on words to bring up a list of synonyms (from an online API) and possibly authorized abbreviations from a list that I provide, then once clicked on it would replace that word with the word that was clicked on. It would function kind of like After the Deadline or a Javascript based spell checker. Are there any libraries set up to make something like this easy, or what kind of Javascript do I need to be looking at? Are there any tutorials or examples for this kind of thing? I am aware that the source code for After the Deadline is available, but I only need a small portion of their technology, not all of the actual grammar and spelling check technology.

  • processing gamestate with a window of commands across time?

    I have clients sending client updates at a 100ms intervals. i pool the command inputs and create a client command frame. the commands come into the server in these windows and i tag them across time as they come in. when i do a server tick i intend to process this list of commands i.e. [ {command:'duck',timestamp:350,player:'a'}, {command:'shoot',timestamp:395,player:'b'}, {command:'move', timestamp:410,player:'c'} {command:'cover',timestamp:420,player:'a'} ] how would i efficiently update the gamestate based on this list? the two solutions i see are 1) simulate time via direct equation to figure out how far everyone would move or change as if the real gameupdate was ticking on the worldtick..but then unforseen events that would normally trigger during real update would not get triggered such as powerups or collissions 2) prepare to run the worldupdate multiple times and figure out which commands get sent to which worldupdate. this seems better but a little more costly is there a canonical way to do this?

  • quickest way to research a set of pages backlinks

    I have a list of 300+ pages (they were chosen based on which pages rank for a keyword I'm interested in) and I want to compile a list all the (known) inbound links to those pages. What's the fastest way to do this? It seems like the only tools out there-- Yahoo Site Explorer, SEOMoz, Majestic, require you to either a) manually export each set of links by hand, or b) get data at the domain level (e.g. Majestic's clique hunter). Does anyone know of any efficient way to do this? I ask because I'm about to write a bunch of code and I don't want to waste my time if there's another tool that will work. I know SEOMoz and Majestic have API's but I'm wondering if there's a more user-friendly option.

  • Can't open Minecraft with java

    I know this has been asked here before, but none of the solutions have worked for me. I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 on my system and I installed Open Java 7 and I downloaded Minecraft. I right clicked Minecraft went to properties and set it as an executable and then went to open with and Java is no where to be found in the list. I made a new Java desktop file in /usr/share/applications and now when I go to the list Java is there and I set Minecraft to open with it by default but when I open it nothing at all happens. Now how am I supposed to get Minecraft to work?

    I'm developing an application which will list members who have not paid their any previous month's fee and a separate list for those who have paid the fee. So, lets say a member who will be paying fee through out the year, each month and if he didn't pay fee for march 2013 then app should highlight him as un-paid member. What would be best practice to achieve it. Adding fee invoices for whole year already in database when member is added then loop through his payments to check if fee is paid or not, or add a validation date for member on his each payment, for example payment made in Feb 2013 then member is valid till 28.02.2013. Check if date today is 28.02.2013 then he has not paid..

  • best way to import 500MB csv file into mysql database?

    I have a 500MB csv file that needs to be imported into my mysql database. I've made a php file where i can upload the csv file and it analyses the fields n stuff and does the actual importing. but it can only handle small fiels max 5mb. so that's a 100 files and actually pretty slow(uploading) is there another way? I have to repeat this process every month because the data in the file changes every month it's about 12 000 000 lines :D

  • PHP or C++? I just want to choose a language and focus on it!

    I love C++, but I feel I don't know if I should focus on web, so PHP, or C++. It's just an hard choice because right now I want to focus on one language and don't want to switch it a few months later. With C++ I'd program in SDL, while with PHP I don't know yet. I am not a very advanced programmer but I know basics of programming and can get going very well if determined. The problem is I just don't know.. I'm like OK! I'll go for C++! Then a minute later, wait what if I went with C#? Why this that.. ! I've read milion threads about C vs VB C# Python Ruby etc, all of them which I could find! It got me nowhere. The problem is probably I need to know something from some experts I guess.. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels/felt like I do right now yeah? Uhm... I guess I might help you with some details so your answer may be easier to write! ( And also, if you want to say something else which is not related to PHP or C++, you can do that, I've just got to the conclusion that C++ and PHP are the ones that are worth it but yeah. C# I've discarded due to some stuff I read which says in future the projects I'd start now could just be useless and stuff like that.. ) Ok well : I'm 18 years old, and I program as hobby right now, but I do hope to go to a programming college in future. ( That would be in 2 years ). Hmm, I like programming games, and I'm mostly bothered by the fact "this language could be useless to what I need to do" ( I don't know how to explain this feeling! ) I don't know which other details I could add... I hope you guys can help me choose my path, this is really stressing me I'm wasting my time not doing anything right now because I don't know which language to use..! Thanks!

  • Is Ubuntu recognizing and/or using my NVIDIA graphics card?

    This is my first post here, and I'm pretty new to Ubuntu/Linux. I currently have no other OS except for Ubuntu 13.10. (I used to have Win7 until i got a new terabyte hard drive). My current PC build, if any of this helps: CPU: Intel i5 quad-core Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 RAM: 8 GB HDD: 1 TB SATA 3 Motherboard: MSi Z77 A-G41 OS Ubuntu 13.10 So I recently installed Ubuntu 13.10 and put Steam on it, and I'm seeing that my games run a lot slower than they did when I had Win7. I figured it was a graphics problem, so I checked System Settings Details Overview. It says in "Graphics" that I have "Gallium 0.4 on NVE7" (don't really know what that is). Does this mean that Ubuntu is not using my graphics card? In System Settings Software & Updates Additional Drivers, it clearly shows like this: NVIDIA Corporation: GK107 [GeForce GTX 650] -This device is using an alternative driver (And then it shows a list of drivers that I can switch back and forth to) So this is a bit confusing. In Software and Updates, it clearly shows that I have my NVIDIA card installed, and that I have a driver selected for it. But in System Settings, it shows I have some Gallium 0.4 thing. I had done a bit of research, and ended up typing command: "lspci|grep VGA" in the Terminal. It showed this in response: VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107 [GeForce GTX 650] (rev a1) The Terminal seems to recognize my graphics card. What it looks like to me, is that I don't have the proper driver, and I might be using my CPU's integrated graphics. When I switch around which driver I am using in that list, it still does not see my card in System Settings. Some of the drivers in the list give me some sort of OpenGL error when I try to run a game. It might just be that my games are running slow because the game developers have not optimized it for Ubuntu that well. However, that still doesn't take away from the fact that System Settings is not showing my NVIDIA card. TL;DR Version: How do I know if my video card is being recognized/used? If my video card is not being used, what is the best way fix that? Please make your answers easy to understand. I do not mind wordy responses, as long as I can follow what you're saying. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Jabber5
