• What language is to binary, as Perl is to text?

  I am looking for a scripting (or higher level programming) language (or e.g. modules for Python or similar languages) for effortlessly analyzing and manipulating binary data in files (e.g. core dumps), much like Perl allows manipulating text files very smoothly. Things I want to do include presenting arbitrary chunks of the data in various forms (binary, decimal, hex), convert data from one endianess to another, etc. That is, things you normally would use C or assembly for, but I'm looking for a language which allows for writing tiny pieces of code for highly specific, one-time purposes very quickly. Any suggestions?

• Groovy 1.7 changes "final"?

• Best way to implement a Rest API with PHP on Wamp web server

  Hello, i own a web server running windows (WAMP). I want to know the best way to implement a Rest API (a very simple one) in order to let a user do something. Diagram flow: I have programming skills, in fact, i developed some time ago a web server in VB6 who process the querys and when it find the command (http:/serverIP/webform.php?cmd=run&item=any) it do something, but know i really want to develop a solution using the WAMP server. Some people consider the solution of executing a exe when a command is detected a bad solution for security issues, but this specific proyect i have is for the use of only some people (trusted people) who dont have intentions of hacking the server. So, what do you think? Remember: Its not a public API, its for some people and some programs who will use the API Its a very simple one, only one command using POST or GET. Thanks

• Separating arguments to a function, in locales with comma as decimal marker

  In locales, e.g. French, with comma as decimal indicator (where "5,2" means five and two-tenths), how do users separate function arguments from each other? For example, in many programming/scripting languages, I could specify MAX(1.5, X) in a EN-US locale. How do you avoid the ambiguity between the comma as decimal indicator, and as argument separator? In particular, I'm interested in how software that's perceived as user-friendly in the foreign locale does it. Obviously, it's a no-brainer to say, "thou shalt use decimal POINTs", but that's not particularly "friendly".

• How is joystick axis information formatted from a USB Joystick?

  I actually just have a rather small question, but I have had the HARDEST time finding information about it. For the application I am programming for, there will be a 3-axis joystick being connected via USB to a Windows XP computer, and it is being handled by directx. That information will then be sent elsewhere to an embedded controller. I don't need to know too much of the intricacies of how directx handles it, but I want to know, how is the data for the axes formatted? Nearest I can tell, most joysticks nowadays have 12 bits of resolution, so is the data output as a 12-bit 2's compliment number? And after that, is it represented as a signed 16-bit integer when it is captured from directx? I'd like to know this so I know how I will work with the data at the embedded platform side, such as how to format the packets sending data to the embedded side, as well ashow to use the information once it is on the embedded side.

• Assignment to None

  Hello, I have a function which returns 3 numbers, e.g.: def numbers(): return 1,2,3 usually I call this function to receive all three returned numbers e.g.: a,b,c=numbers() However, I have one case in which I only need the first returned number. I tried using: a, None None = numbers() But I receive "SyntaxError: assignment to None". I know, of course, that i can use the first option I mentioned and then not use "b" and "c", but only "a". However, this seems like a "waste" of two vars and feels like wrong programming. Any ideas? Thanks, Joek

I'd like to compile a list/catalog of good questions, a kind of minimum standard to see if the applicants are experienced. So, my question is: What questions do you think should a good .NET programmer be able to respond? I'd also see it as a checklist for myself, in order to see where my own deficits are (there are many...). *UPDATE: It want to make clear that we're not testing only for .NET knowledge, and that problem solving capabilities and general programming skills are even more important to us.

• What's the best way to calculate similarity between rows in a table based on association?

So I have a table for: Person Book The association between Person and Book (joint table for MxN) I want to fetch the Persons that are similar to a Person1 based on the favorite Books overlaping. That is: The more books they have in common, the more they are similar. I don't have to use only SQL to solve this problem. I could use programming also. I'm using SQL Server 2008 and C#. • C# to loop through folder until it finds the correct files

  I’m running a batch to do an update to my sql table. I’m using windows scheduler to run the batch file. Each day files come in at different time. Sometime they come in after my scheduled time therefore the batch file doesn’t run when there’s no file before the scheduled task in the folder. I want to create a c# program where it will loop through the folder until it finds the files and then move to the next step in the batch file. Basically my goal is to create a program that will look for those particular files and once they finds the correct files then it will start the update. I’m new to programming and need some direction. • XCode newbie: How to find the source code for standard or system libraries?

  XCode newbie question here: If I'm programming in C++ or objective C, and I #include or #import a library; e.g. #include <iostream> #import <Cocoa/Cocoa.h> I'm often not sure where to look for these header files in the directory structure on my Mac. In other development environments, you can right click the included or imported filename and have the option to jump to source. Is there such a feature in XCode? Also, for the standard C++ libraries and the Cocoa framework, is the source code for the implementation files available, or only the headers together with compiled link libraries? Thanks!

• What skills are needed to be successful at robotics?

  I'm considering studying to be a robotics engineer. The desire to work in that field is definitely there.. but I'm wondering what my chances of success would be. Generally I'm good with mental tasks of any sort such as programming, maths, physics, etc, and I think i'd be able to do electrical work such as soldering wires, changing batteries, etc. However, I'm not so good with things of a physical nature where I have to use my hands. For example, if you give me some vegetables to slice and dice, all of them will be diced un-evenly and some will look ugly. This might be because I have poor mind-hand coordination or because of a lack of concentration. Thoughts?

  Hi all, I'm a somewhat experienced java ee developer, and I wish to complement my background by learning a newish language. I'm recently out of school where I did a ton of scientific computing and some functional programming, so I'm pretty comfortable with those families of languages. If at all possible, I'd like to pick a language with some market value, though I know this is tough to gauge. After snooping around a bit, the consensus seems to be one of Python/Ruby/Perl; how would each of these work with java in a web application environment, and in your opinion which complements it best? Any other suggestions for languages would also be welcome.

• Generating C code from a Matlab-Simulink model for DSP C6748

  I'm trying to generate C code from a Matlab-Simulink simple model (eg.: sine wave generator with a DAC at the output). This code must be executed with Code Composer Studio for TMS320C6748 DSP (Texas Instrument C6748). Specifically, for the development board OMAP-L138 ZOOM ™EVM DEVELOPMENT KIT. For this, I am using the following versions: Simulink (Version 7.7 - R2011a) Embedded Coder (Version 6.0 - R2011a) Code Composer Studio v3.3 I tried several options (with generic modules in Simulink and programming the C6748 timers, configuring a module "Target Preferences" with "OMAP_L138/C6748 EVM"...) but it isn't working. Is it possible to implement this idea? Is there an example working? Thanks

Up until now I have been programming this locally, now I need to publish the program onto the website; the issue is that FileStream can only access local files with elevated permissions. • Edit Distance in Python

  I'm programming a spellcheck program in Python. I have a list of valid words (the dictionary) and I need to output a list of words from this dictionary that have an edit distance of 2 from a given invalid word. I know I need to start by generating a list with an edit distance of one from the invalid word(and then run that again on all the generated words). I have three methods, inserts(...), deletions(...) and changes(...) that should output a list of words with an edit distance of 1, where inserts outputs all valid words with one more letter than the given word, deletions outputs all valid words with one less letter, and changes outputs all valid words with one different letter. I've checked a bunch of places but I can't seem to find an algorithm that describes this process. All the ideas I've come up with involve looping through the dictionary list multiple times, which would be extremely time consuming. If anyone could offer some insight, I'd be extremely grateful. Some have syntax highlighting for multiple languages, some allow you to save your code as private and only share with the people you give the link to, and some even run the run and output any possible errors. • "Look" of page changes a bit after uploading it to IIS - looks good on computer same IE8

  No it's not a path issue...or else the site won't have a design. The website looks fine if I open it with IE8 in my computer. But after I upload it to IIS 6.0 two things change on positioning. I see a rendering problem. But if I open it with IE 8.0 on my machine it looks good, but opening it when uploaded to IIS , it changes a bit. Same exact files. Same browser, same computer. The only different thing is that it has been uploaded to IIS. IT has no programming in aspx whatsoever just .html .css and .js

• Does pdksh (public domain korn shell) support associative arrays?

  I recently ran up against a wall doing some bash shell programming where an associative array would have solved my problems. I googled about features of the Korn shell and learned that it supports associative arrays, so I installed Cygwin's pdksh (public domain korn shell). However, when trying to create an associative array in the prescribed manner (typeset -A varName), I received the following errors, so I'm beginning to suspect pdksh does not support associative arrays. ./find_actions.ksh: line 2: typeset: -A: invalid option typeset: usage: typeset [-afFirtx] [-p] name[=value] ... • Python: Indexing list for element in nested list

  I know what I'm looking for. I want python to tell me which list it's in. Here's some pseudocode: item = "a" nested_list = [["a", "b"], ["c", "d"]] list.index(item) #obviously this doesn't work here I would want python to return 0 (because "a" is an element in the first sub-list in the bigger list). I don't care which sub-element it is. I don't care if there are duplicates, e.g., ["a", "b", "a"] should return the same thing as the above example. Sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm new to programming.

• Are C++ meta-templates required knowledge for programmers?

  In my experience Meta-templates are really fun (when your compilers are compliant), and can give good performance boosts, and luckily I'm surrounded by seasoned C++ programmers that also grok meta-templates, however occasionally a new developer arrives and can't make heads or tails of some of the meta-template tricks we use (mostly Andrei Alenxandrescu stuff), for a few weeks until he gets initiated appropriately. So I was wondering what's the situation for other C++ programmers out there? Should meta-template programming be something C++ programmers should be "required" to know (excluding entry level students of course), or not?
