• Are the National Computer Science Academy certifications worth it?

  Hi to every one. I have a question regarding the real value of having NCSA's certifications. Today I reach their site and I easily passed the JavaScript certification within minutes, but I never reach questions related to Literal Javascript Notation (Json), closures or browser specific apis. This facts let me to doubt a bit of the real value of the test (and the proper certification you can have if you pay them $34), but maybe Im wrong and just earned a respected certification within the States for easy questions... in wich case I can spend some time doing other certifications on the same site. Did you have an NCSA certification and think is worth having it in your resume, or you know of a better certification program? thanks in advance, and looking forward to see your considerations.

• Are there any additional considerations to make when designing a site structure if you plan to use persistent connection technologies?

  As the title states, I'm thinking of making a simple-card-game based website, using persistent connection technology (Something like signalR) for the actual game part of it. I've never planned a site to use this technology, and wondering for those who have, are there any additional things that need to be taken into consideration for the site structure? I'm planning on using the asp MVC framework for the whole thing, and starting off with some simple game (e.g. card based Rock/Paper/Scissors) for proof of concept (to see if I can get it working how I think it would in my head).

• What to do with my "unmounted drive"?

  I just recently followed the tutorials on http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download for installing the ubuntu server onto my 1TB Seagate External. I was planning on using this to install it on my macbook and in these instructions it states to preform this line of code Run diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN (replace N with the disk number from the last command; in the previous example, N would be 2) Now my HD prompts "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". • Download files from a SharePoint site using the RSSBus SSIS Components

  In this article we will show how to use a stored procedure included in the RSSBus SSIS Components for SharePoint to download files from SharePoint. While the article uses the RSSBus SSIS Components for SharePoint, the same process will work for any of our SSIS Components. Step 1: Open Visual Studio and create a new Integration Services Project. Step 2: Add a new Data Flow Task to the Control Flow screen and open the Data Flow Task. Step 3: Add an RSSBus SharePoint Source to the Data Flow Task. Step 4: In the RSSBus SharePoint Source, add a new Connection Manager, and add your credentials for the SharePoint site. Step 5: Now from the Table or View dropdown, choose the name of the Document Library that you are going to back up and close the wizard. Step 6: Add a Script Component to the Data Flow Task and drag an output arrow from the 'RSSBus SharePoint Source' to it. Step 7: Open the Script Component, go to edit the Input Columns, and choose all the columns. Step 8: This will open a new Visual Studio instance, with a project in it. In this project add a reference to the RSSBus.SSIS2008.SharePoint assembly available in the RSSBus SSIS Components for SharePoint installation directory. Step 9: In the 'ScriptMain' class, add the System.Data.RSSBus.SharePoint namespace and go to the 'Input0_ProcessInputRow' method (this method's name may vary depending on the input name in the Script Component). Step 10: In the 'Input0_ProcessInputRow' method, you can add code to use the DownloadDocument stored procedure. • Legislative Alert - Payroll for North America

  We have a Legislative Alert for our customers using PeopleSoft Payroll for North America.   The IRS has made some changes to the FUTA reporting for the tax year 2011.  The IRS requires that all employers complete the 940 Schedule A form when completing the Tax Form 940.  On the Schedule A employers must indicate every state in which you were required to pay state unemployment tax during the year (even if that state's credit reduction rate was zero).  For states with a credit reduction rate greater than zero you must enter the FUTA taxable wages paid in that state then multiply it by the credit reduction rate to report the credit reduction amount for that state.  Please go to Document ID 1371681.1 to obtain additional information on this regulation along with Oracle/PeopleSoft position on this new requirement.

• Is it a good idea to simplify an character -driven game engine to the point it's unnecessary to learn scripting/programming ?

  I remember, and I still think, that one cannot even make a prototyped 3D game to test just simple behaviors without using gigantic tools like unity or knowing extensive C++ programming, design pattern, a decent or basic 3D engine, etc. Now I'm wondering, since I know programming, that I'm still more lucky that the ones who need to learn programming prior to know how to make something: even scripted engines such as unity are not for kids, and to my sense they tend to dictate their ways of doing things, which is not the case with engine like ogre or irrlicht. I remember toying a little with the blender game engine, it was possible to link states or something I don't remember very well. Now I'm thinking that character driven games occupies a big part of the game market. Do you think it is a good idea to make a character-controlled oriented game engine which allows only to build AI instead of anything else ?

• BIDS Helper 1.6 Beta Release (now with SQL 2012 support!)

  The beta for BIDS Helper 1.6 was just released. We have not updated the version notification just yet as we would like to get some feedback on people's experiences with the SQL 2012 version. So if you are using SQL 2012, go grab it and let us know how you go (you can post a comment on this blog post or on the BIDS Helper site itself). This is the first release that supports SQL 2012 and consequently also the first release that runs in Visual Studio 2010. A big thanks to Greg Galloway for doing the bulk of the work on this release. Please note that if you are doing an xcopy deploy that you will need to unblock the files you download or you will get a cryptic error message. This appears to be caused by a security update to either Visual Studio or the .Net framework – the xcopy deploy instructions have been updated to show you how to do this. • What is the difference between Constant Vertex Attributes and Uniforms?

  According to the OpenGL ES 2.0 Programming Guide: A constant vertex attribute is the same for all vertices of a primitive, and therefore only one value needs to be specified for all the vertices of a primitive. For uniforms the book states: ...any parameter to a shader that is constant across either all vertices or fragments (but that is not known at compile time) should be passed in as a uniform. I've always used uniforms for data that is constant for a primitive but now it appears that attributes can also be used in the same way. Is there more to constant vertex attribute than simply 'they are the same as uniforms'?

• Ubuntu One not syncing and not providing feedback

  Firstly, I apologize for not being more specific with my problem, but Ubuntu One is just not providing me with any information. It appears to be working, it states that "syncronization in progress..." but it never actually syncronizes (by never I mean 3 days). When I first selected a folder to sync using Ubuntu One it took on the order of hours to sync over 500MB of files - it uploaded the folder hierarchy first and populated the folders over a few hours. That is not happening at all now. Please let me know if there is a way I can get more information out of Ubuntu One that I can post and hopefully resolve this issue. Thanks, Joe

• "Wireless disabled by hardware switch" after suspend and other hardware buttons ineffective - how can I solve this?

  I have recently purchased a Novatech nFinity N1410 laptop and am having problems with the wireless, which sudo lshw -C network tells me is Centrino Wireless-N 2230 and using the iwlwifi driver. The problem is that after the device has been suspended, I am not able to get the wireless working again without a restart. The network indicator states that the wireless disabled by hardware switch. Though Fn+F2 is meant to be the wireless switch, xev tells me that the system doesn't see it as anything at all when I press this hardware combination. Also, though the brightness up/down buttons work fine, the volume up/down buttons do not work either. What can I do to fix this? I am running Ubuntu 12.10 with all available updates installed.

• Oracle BPM and Open Data integration development

  Rapidly developing Oracle BPM application solutions with data source integration previously required significant Java and JDeveloper skills. Now using open source tools for open data development significantly reduces the coding needed.  Key tasks can be performed with visual drag and drop designing combined with menu selections entry and automatic form generation directly from XSD schema definitions. The architecture used is extremely lightweight, portable, open platform and scalable allowing integration with a variety of Oracle and non-Oracle data sources and systems. Two videos available on YouTube walk through the process at both an introductory conceptual level and then a deep dive into the programming needed using JDeveloper, Oracle BPM composer and Oracle WLS (WebLogic Server) along with the CAM editor and Open-XDX open source tools. Also available are coding samples and resources from the GitHub project page, along with working online demonstration resources on the VerifyXML site. Combining Oracle BPM with these open source tools provides a comprehensive simple and elegant solution set. Development times are slashed and rapid prototyping is enabled. Also existing data sources can be integrated using open data formats with either XML or JSON along with CRUD accessing via the Open-XDX Java component. The Open-XDX tool is a code-free approach where data mapping is configured as templates using visual drag and drop in the CAM Editor open source tool.  XML or JSON is then automatically generated or processed (output or input) and appropriate SQL statements created to support the data accessing.   Also included is the ability to integrate with fillable PDF forms via the XML templates and the Java PDF form filling library.  Again minimal Java coding is needed to associate the XML source content with the PDF named fields.  The Oracle BPM forms can be automatically generated from XSD schema definitions that are built from the data mapping templates.  This dramatically simplifies development work as all the integration artifacts needed are created by the open source editor toolset. The developer level video is designed as a tutorial with segments, hands-on demonstrations and reviews.  This allows developers to learn the techniques and approaches used in incremental steps. The intended audience ranges from data analysts to developers and assumes only entry level Java skills and knowledge.  Most actions are menu driven while Java coding is limited to simply configuring values and parameters along with performing builds and deployments from JDeveloper and Oracle WLS.   Additional existing Oracle online training resources can be referenced on Oracle BPM and WLS that cover other normal delivery aspects such as user management and application deployment.

• GeoToolkit Demo Embedded in an Application Framework via Maven

• Content in Context: The right medicine for your business applications

  For many of you, your companies have already invested in a number of applications that are critical to the way your business is run. HR, Payroll, Legal, Accounts Payable, and while they might need an upgrade in some cases, they are all there and handling the lifeblood of your business. But are they really running as efficiently as they could be? For many companies, the answer is no. The problem has to do with the important information caught up within documents and paper. It’s everywhere except where it truly needs to be – readily available right within the context of the application itself. When the right information cannot be easily found, business processes suffer significantly. The importance of this recently struck me when I recently went to meet my new doctor and get a routine physical. Walking into the office lobby, I couldn't help but notice rows and rows of manila folders in racks from floor to ceiling, filled with documents and sensitive, personal information about various patients like myself.  As I looked at all that paper and all that history, two things immediately popped into my head.  “How do they find anything?” and then the even more alarming, “So much for information security!” It sure looked to me like all those documents could be accessed by anyone with a key to the building. Now the truth is that the offices of many general practitioners look like this all over the United States and the world.  But it had me thinking, is the same thing going on in just about any company around the world, involving a wide variety of important business processes? Probably so. Think about all the various processes going on in your company right now. Invoice payments are being processed through Accounts Payable, contracts are being reviewed by Procurement, and Human Resources is reviewing job candidate submissions and doing background checks. All of these processes and many more like them rely on access to forms and documents, whether they are paper or digital. Now consider that it is estimated that employee’s spend nearly 9 hours a week searching for information and not finding it. That is a lot of very well paid employees, spending more than one day per week not doing their regular job while they search for or re-create what already exists. Back in the doctor’s office, I saw this trend exemplified as well. First, I had to fill out a new patient form, even though my previous doctor had transferred my records over months previously. After filling out the form, I was later introduced to my new doctor who then interviewed me and asked me the exact same questions that I had answered on the form. I understand that there is value in the interview process and it was great to meet my new doctor, but this simple process could have been so much more efficient if the information already on file could have been brought directly together with the new patient information I had provided. Instead of having a highly paid medical professional re-enter the same information into the records database, the form I filled out could have been immediately scanned into the system, associated with my previous information, discrepancies identified, and the entire process streamlined significantly. We won’t solve the health records management issues that exist in the United States in this blog post, but this example illustrates how the automation of information capture and classification can eliminate a lot of repetitive and costly human entry and re-creation, even in a simple process like new patient on-boarding. In a similar fashion, by taking a fresh look at the various processes in place today in your organization, you can likely spot points along the way where automating the capture and access to the right information could be significantly improved. As you evaluate how content-process flows through your organization, take a look at how departments and regions share information between the applications they are using. Business applications are often implemented on an individual department basis to solve specific problems but a holistic approach to overall information management is not taken at the same time. The end result over the years is disparate applications with separate information repositories and in many cases these contain duplicate information, or worse, slightly different versions of the same information. This is where Oracle WebCenter Content comes into the story. More and more companies are realizing that they can significantly improve their existing application processes by automating the capture of paper, forms and other content. This makes the right information immediately accessible in the context of the business process and making the same information accessible across departmental systems which has helped many organizations realize significant cost savings.   In the JavaDoc for X509Certificate getSubjectDN() it states: Denigrated, replaced by getSubjectX500Principal(). I am used to seeing Deprecated in the for methods that should not be used any longer, but not Denigrated. I found a bug report about this particular case where it was closed with comment: This isn't a bug. "Deprecated" is meant to be used only in serious cases. When we are using a method that is Deprecated, the general suggested action is to stop using the method. So what is the suggested action when a method is marked as Denigrated?
