• Does scheduling recycling app pool in IIS7 help the server conserve memory better?

  Hello, I have a VPS (IIS7 with Win 2008) It's got: 40 websites and a SQL Server 2008 powering them with only 2 Gigs of RAM. None of the sites are mission critical, they are all just demos. I often have ram issues on the server because each site has does caching and generally uses a lot of memory. Would it make sense to set the application pools to recycle every 3 hours? I'm sure this would free up any memory leaks or processes left "hanging" Are there any other tips on this? Thank you very much!, Aron

• Text comparison utility

  I know this has been asked before...but I have a spin as I have been trying out varying free software offerings. I want to rid out department of DiffDoc the problem is that I am having trouble locating something that will do what we need. WinMerge has been the latest attempt... The problem is simple. One Word doc...one PDF with a portion of it containing the text to be compared against. Compare them and be done. Raw text, ignore whitespace, ignore carriage returns, etc... Just compare the text and give me the results in some sort of report. NOTE: Have tried ExamDiff, kdiff3, Tortoise, and a few others...

• How to open a second instance of the pdf x-change viewer?

  Every time I open a new document in the pdf x-change viewer, it gets opened in the same window. I want to place different documents on different places on the screen (independently of each other, not just tiling the window for side-by-side view), but cannot do it. Even going to the start menu and starting the reader again doesn't open a new instance of the application. Can I force the program to open a new instance or a new independent window? If this is impossible, which other free reader does what I need and also lets me make changes to the file? I don't need to edit the text itself, but I want to be able to add comments, underline and highlight text, and add some graphic elements (e.g. a circle or a freehand line).

• Installing Solaris with Window. Disk partitioning problem.

  I am running windows and want to install the solaris but having hard time while using installer. I have 1 primary partition of 40GB and one extended partition. Extended partition have 4 logical drive. Solaris disk management window show only two partition one is of 40GB(Primary) and second is Extended partition. Can i convert a logical drive into primary partition( I have one free of 25 GB).   I want a friend of mine to review my code. I have a mic built into my laptop but i can use another software for voice chat. So i would like to have him to either view my screen (taking control might be fine) or show me his screen so he can talk about a specific piece of code. What software is good for this? We both think about security so an MS product (netmeeting? if that still exist on normal msn live installs) or an open source would be preferred. Should be free.

• AT&T Application Resource Analyzer in NetBeans IDE

  Here at Øredev in Malmö I met Doug Sillars who does developer outreach for the AT&T Application Resource Optimizer. In this YouTube clip you see Doug explaining how it works and what it can do for optimizing performance of mobile applications. There's a free and open source Android app on GitHub that you can install on Android to collect data and then there's a Java Swing application for analyzing the results. And here's what that application looks like as a plugin in NetBeans IDE, click to enlarge the image, which shows the Android sources of the Data Collector, as well as the Data Analyzer ready to be used to collect data: Since the ARO Data Analyzer is written in Java and has JPanels defining its UI layer, integrating the user interface wasn't hard. Now working on the Actions, so there'll be a new ARO menu with start/stop data collecting menu items, etc, reusing as much of the original code as possible. That part is actually already working. I started up an Android emulator, then started the data collection process from the IDE. Now need to include the Actions for importing the data into the analyzer, together with a few other related features. A pretty cool feature in ARO is video capture, so that a movie can be made by ARO of all the steps taken on the device during the collection process, which will also be nice to have integrated into the NetBeans plugin. Ultimately, this will be handy for anyone creating Android applications in NetBeans IDE since they'll be able to use AT&T's ARO tool for optimizing the performance of the applications they're developing. It will also be useful for those using the built-in Cordova tools in NetBeans IDE to create iOS applications because ARO is also applicable to analyzing iOS application performance.

  In past postings I've spent a fair amount of time talking about targeted promotions.  Using a complete view of the customer that includes purchase history, location history, and psychographics gleaned from social media, we can select the offer with the greatest chance of redemption.  This is done to influence shopping behavior, which might be introducing the consumer to a new product line, increasing their basket size, increasing frequency of purchases, etc. Safeway seems to be taking a slightly different approach with their personalized pricing.  In additional to offering electronic coupons and club card offers, they are also providing a personalized price for certain items based on purchase history.  So when Sally want to shop at Safeway, she first checks the "Just for U" website for three types of deals.  She starts by selecting manufacturer coupons to load into her loyalty card, then she checks the Club Card for offers like "buy one get one free." The third step is the interesting one.  Safeway will set a particular lower price for Sally good for 90 days on items she buys often.  Clearly this isn't enforcing a new behavior but rather instilling loyalty.  I would love to know exactly how they are determining the personalized price.  Of course bargain hunters can still stack the three offers so they can, for example, get their $4.99 Oatmeal for $0.72. I like this particular question and answer from their website's FAQ: My offers are not that great. Can I tell you what offers I need? That's a good idea. That functionality is not currently available, but we appreciate your input and are constantly improving our just for U program. Stay tuned for exciting enhancements! I suppose if Safeway is tracking all the purchases, they can easily determine whether the customer if profitable.  As long as the customer stays profitable, why not let them determine a few offers themselves?  Food for thought.

• System Monitoring Redundancy

  I consult in a small business environment where I have two HyperV hosts (with <10 VMs) + a couple other servers. I recently had an issue where one of the HyperV hosts had a CPU issue and it came down, bringing most of my non-critical VMs with it, plus a free piece of software that I use for network & system monitoring and availability. Because of this, and the fact that iDRAC locked up to, I did not get any alerts about the crash. So I am wondering how I can (cheaply) get a redundant availability monitoring system in place--Is is as simple as running Nagios or Zenoss (or whatever) on two different HyperV hosts? It just seems like running more than one copy of Nagios/Zenoss/etc could be expensive and have high overhead. Thoughts? Thanks! -Josh

• Options for remote desktop software for helping remote users?

  I need an easy way to jump on someone elses machine to help them solve a problem. It needs to be really easy for them to install (preferably doesn't actually require an "install" but just running an exe?). It must punch through any firewalls automatically using a relay server or P2P (so Remote Desktop itself is no use to me). I've found commercial products like MeetMeNow but they're really expensive. I want something that you can either buy a cheap pack of sessions or minutes, or preferably something free. I'm not in the business of commerical support and would only use it once every couple of months perhaps.

• Python in Finance by Yuxing Yan, Packt Publishing Book Review

But, it turned out to be quite the opposite. I learned a lot about practical implementations of various Python modules as SciPy, NumPy and several more, I think they empower a developer a lot. No wonder Python is on the track to become a de-facto scientist language of choice! But I am not going to compromise the truth, the book does discuss numerous financial terms, many of them, and this is where the enormous power of this book is coming from: it is like standing on the shoulders of a giant. Python is that giant - flexible and powerful, yet very approachable. The TOC is very detailed thanks to Packt, any one can see what financial algorithms are covered, I am only going to name a few which I had most fun with (though all of them are covered in enough details): Fama*, Fat Tail, ARCH, Monte-Carlo and of course the volatility smile! I am under an impression this book is best suited for students in Finance, especially those who are about to join the workforce, but I suspect the material in this book is very well suited for mature Financists, an investor who has some programming skills and wants to benefit from it, or even a programmer, or a mathematician who already knows Python or any other language, but wants to have fun in Quantitative Finance and earn a few buck! Pure fun, real results, tons of practical insight from reading data from a file to downloading trade data from Yahoo! Lastly, I need to complement Yuxing – he is a talented teacher, this book could not be what it is otherwise. It is a 5 out of 5 product. • Is my HD broken? Can i use it for anything?

  Someone suggested formatting my HD so i wont try to read bad data. From what i understand the OS marks which clusters are bad and skips them. So after copying all my data i did a quick format to NTFS. I copied files with an error then i right clicked and tried to create a new folder. I was greeted by this message. I have 926 of 931gb free. Is my external HD broken?

• Checking whether binary files are the same ?

  What would be the easiest way of veryfying whether two binary files are the same, without actually opening them, checking versions and such in different programs ... ? I primary mean files like 3d models, acad drawings, and the like, of which I have different versions, saved in different directories, and upon completing, I just want to find which are the newest, and which are different from the newest, and delete every other. So far I've thought od md5 ? Any other ideas ? This doesn't actually fit under "diff" tag so feel free to change it, if you can think of a better alternative.

• Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 2)

  Last week's article, Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 1), was the first in a multi-part article series exploring how to add store locator-type functionality to your ASP.NET website using the free Google Maps API. Part 1 started with an examination of the database used to power the store locator, which contains a single table named Stores with columns capturing the store number, its address and its latitude and longitude coordinates. Next, we looked at using Google Maps API's geocoding service to translate a user-entered address, such as San Diego, CA or 92101 into its latitude and longitude coordinates. Knowing the coordinates of the address entered by the user, we then looked at writing a SQL query to return those stores within (roughly) 15 miles of the user-entered address. These nearby stores were then displayed in a grid, listing the store number, the distance from the address entered to each store, and the store's address. While a list of nearby stores and their distances certainly qualifies as a store locator, most store locators also include a map showing the area searched, with markers denoting the store locations. • C++ Numerical Recipes &ndash; A New Adventure!

  I am about to embark on a great journey – over the next 6 weeks I plan to read through C++ Numerical Recipes 3rd edition http://amzn.to/YtdpkS I'll be reading this with an eye to C++ AMP, thinking about implementing the suitable subset (non-recursive, additive, commutative) to run on the GPU. APIs supporting HPC, GPGPU or MapReduce are all useful – providing you have the ability to choose the correct algorithm to leverage on them. I really think this is the most fascinating area of programming – a lot more exciting than LOB CRUD !!! When you think about it , everything is a function – we categorize & we extrapolate. As abstractions get higher & less leaky, sooner or later information systems programming will become a non-programmer task – you will be using WYSIWYG designers to build: GUIs MVVM service mapping & virtualization workflows ORM Entity relations In the data source SharePoint / LightSwitch are not there yet, but every iteration gets closer. For information workers, managed code is a race to the bottom. As MS futures are a bit shaky right now, the provider agnostic nature & higher barriers of entry of both C++ & Numerical Analysis seem like a rational choice to me. Its also fascinating – stepping outside the box. This is not the first time I've delved into numerical analysis. 6 months ago I read Numerical methods with Applications, which can be found for free online: http://nm.mathforcollege.com/ 2 years ago I learned the .NET Extreme Optimization library www.extremeoptimization.com – not bad 2.5 years ago I read Schaums Numerical Analysis book http://amzn.to/V5yuLI - not an easy read, as topics jump back & forth across chapters: 3 years ago I read Practical Numerical Methods with C# http://amzn.to/V5yCL9 (which is a toy learning language for this kind of stuff) I also read through AI a Modern Approach 3rd edition END to END http://amzn.to/V5yQSp - this took me a few years but was the most rewarding experience. • Developing games using virtualization on macOS (or Linux) [on hold]

  From what I've seen, most of the gamedev tools and engines (that could generate cross platform games) are not supported on Mac. Havok/Project Anarchy, UDK, GameMaker, e.g. . Basically, the only options I found are: Unity3d and monogame + xamarin. Unity is nice and I've been playing with it for some time, but the free version is quite limited when we're talking about shaders, that made me consider that as an indie developer, I might want more freedom to experiment new things, without paying the expensive unity license. I didn't try monogame + xamarin yet, and altough XNA is a very nice game framework, I'd like to have more freedom to experiment and finish a game first before paying for the IDE, which is not possible with the current Xamarin business model. That leaves me with the thought that I must go back to windows, which I'd preferably do it partially, if it's possible. Using BootCamp is something that I'd like to avoid, since it's a pain to reboot when changing OS and that would probably force me to become a 100% windows user. Is there anyone actually developing a game using virtualization solutions like parallels or vmwareFusion? How was your experience?

• Copying dovecot maildir to another server with courier maildir

  Hi all, i just moved all my mailboxes first from one server to the new one by using rsync. After that i created the folders using Thunderbird to have same folder structure like on old server. Then i copied all mail files into the folders. Now when i subscribe and click on the folder in Thunderbird it starts downloading the headers of all mails, but after finishing download nothing appears in the mail list. Its like my folder is empty and everytime i click again on the folder thunderbird starts again downloading headers. What is wrong here? I found a solution using a tool called imapsync, but its not for free, so i started doing it by copy&paste. I thought Thunderbird will be able to fix the indexes. :-( Or is there a better solution to migrate from dovecot maildir to courier maildir?

• Thunderbird gives " Not enough disk space " alert, after trying to download more emails ( Win 7, 64 bit )

  So, today I have installed Mozilla Thunderbird 24.2.0 on my Windows 7 (64 bit) machine. It was downloading emails, until it hit an error. An alert showed up saying : "There is not enough disk space to download new messages. Try deleting old mail, emptying the Trash folder, and compacting your mail folders, and then try again." Now, disk space is not a problem, there is enough free space left ( almost 50 % of the drive ). How to stop the alert and continue downloading ?

• How do I boot a virtual machine image from my network?

  I have many machines which require the same configurations. My goal is to boot them all from the network and load a virtual machine. It would be wonderful to have one image for all of our customer service machines. That way, I could load the virtual image, perform updates, and know the next time they boot up they will have all the changes. Ideally, the machines would store the image locally and only download a new image if there has been a change. With all the information out there on "desktop virtualization", "PXE booting", and "virtual machines", I feel lost. I have been reading for hours and feel like I have only just scratched the surface. I would like to do this using open source or free software. Any suggestions?

• Volume size doesn't match Disk size after gparted expansion

  I just expanded a basic disk on a Windows XP VM from 15gb to 40 gb using GPARTED LiveCD (0.5.2-11). I didn't notice anything unusual during the expansion; but after I rebooted back into Windows, the disk capacity doesn't match the disk size as it should (only 1 volume on the disk). The disk shows as 40gb; but the C: volume still shows the original size. I've tried expanding the disk again with GPARTED (no change), and using VMware converter and have it adjust the size of the volume during the process (complains about a lack of space of snapshot error inside the os). The volume has 27% free space so I don't think it is a space issue. Chkdsk doesn't seem to find anything wrong either. The OS seems to run just fine, it doesn't see the additional space however. Any ideas?
