  I'm studying Java on my own. One of the exercises is the following, however I do not really understand what it is asking to.... any smart java gurus out there that could explain this in more detail and simple words? Thanks Suppose that you have a binary file that contains numbers whos type is either int or double. You dont know the order of the numbers in the file, but their order is recorded in a string at the begining of the file. The string is composed of the letters i for int, and d for double, in the order of the types of the subsequent numbers. The string is written using the method writeUTF. For example the string "iddiiddd" indicated that the file contains eight values, as follows: one integer, followed by two doubles, followed by two integers, followed by three doubles. Read this binary file and create a new text file of the values written one to a line.

• Backup & recovery of multiple MySQL databases (InnoDB & MyISAM)

  I am working on nightly and hourly backups of MySQL Databases. There are multiple MySQL databases which are either InnoDB or MyISAM (Note: Each database is either InnoDB or MyISAM for a reason). With the 2 different types I want to make sure I am grabbing everything that is needed for backup and recovery. Here is my current plan Nightly -mysqldump of each DB which is stored locally and remotely. Hourly -flush binary logs and store them locally and remotely. Weekly -expire binary logs older than a week. I feel like I am grabbing everything that is needed for the MyISAM databases but I am concerned about the InnoDB databases and the log files (ib_logfile0, ib_logfile1, ibdata1) they create. Should I backup these files? Nightly? Hourly? Both? Do I really need them if I am already doing the above nightly and hourly backups?

  class << self attr_accessor :n, :totalX, :totalY end The syntax above is used for defining class instance variables. But when I think about what syntax implies, it doesn't make any sense to me, so I'm wondering if this type of syntax is used for any other types of definitions. My point of confusion here is this: class << self The append operator normally means "add what's on the right to the object on the left". But in the context of this block, how does that add up to "put the contents of this block into the definition of the class instance rather than the instance"? For the same reason I'm confused as to why in one context class << self can define class instance variables while in another it seems to create class variables such as here: class Point # Instance methods go here class << self # Class methods go here end end

• upgrading to worpdress 3.5 erased all posts and pages, wiped database

  So I have upgraded to wordpress 3.5 and that seemed to have erased all posts and custom post types, media images, sliders etc' I have made a backup using both pressbackup and backupbuddy but when I try to restore the database (or everything). when it is done, if I look at the front end, everything is back and looks great but then when I go to the back end it says the database needs to be upgraded and doesn't let me bypass that. if i click ok it prompts the following message and after that everything is wiped again: WordPress database error: [Table 'db446353270.wp_categories' doesn't exist] SELECT * FROM wp_categories ORDER BY cat_ID WordPress database error: [Table 'db446353270.wp_post2cat' doesn't exist] SELECT post_id, category_id FROM wp_post2cat GROUP BY post_id, category_id WordPress database error: [Table 'db446353270.wp_linkcategories' doesn't exist] SELECT cat_id, cat_name FROM wp_linkcategories WordPress database error: [Unknown column 'link_category' in 'field list'] SELECT link_id, link_category FROM wp_links please advise. • Create a thumbnail of a dwg in in a linux environment

  Creating a ruby on rails site that uses RMagick to create thumbnails for many types of images. RMagick cannot read dwg files however. I've tried a few things, looked into the Java library JDWGLib, which would probably allow me to write a converter, but it would be a total from the ground up solution, where I just need a thumbnail. Also considered using a viewer program to open the file in a remote X session and do a screen capture, however I'm not sure how I could ever guarantee that the viewer had completed opening when I took the screenshot. I'm not concerned with being able to manipulate the file other than to create the thumbnail. It is going to be used for commercial purposes, so any libraries used need to be compatible.

• How to get the ObjectId value from MongoDB?

  I'm using Jongo with Play framework 2, java. I added some data into my MongoDB. {"_id" : ObjectId("538dafffbf6b562617252178"), ... } However, when I fetched the ObjectId from the database, it gave me like: de.undercouch.bson4jackson.types.ObjectId@484431ff instead of 538dafffbf6b562617252178. I don't quite understand how can I get the ObjectId value. My class is defined as following: public class Product { @JsonProperty("_id") protected String id; ... public Product() { } public String getId() { return id; } public void setId(String id) { this.id = id; } } EDIT In order to fetch the data, I simply use find() function provided by Jongo as following: public static Iterable<Product> findAll(){ return products().find().as(Product.class); }

• Objective-C: How to create a method that will return a UInt8 array from an int

  I need to create an Objective-C method that converts an int into a byte array. In this instance, I can't use NSArray as a return type, it must be an UInt8 array. I've written a simple method to do this, but it has errors during compile and tells me that I have incompatible return types. Here is the code snippet.   I had a doubt. Why,generics (in java or any other lang), works with the objects and not with primitive types ? For e.g Gen< Integer inum=new Gen< Integer(100); works fine , but Gen< int inums=new Gen< int(100); is not allowed. Thanks !

• What the performance impact of enabling WebSphere PMI

  I am currently looking at some JProfiler traces from our WebSphere-based application, and am noticing that a significant amount of CPU time is being spent in the class com.ibm.io.async.AsyncLibrary.getCompletionData2. I am guessing, but I am wondering whether this is PMI-related (and we do have this enabled). My knowledge of PMI is limited, as this is managed by another team. Is it expected that PMI can have this sort of impact? (If so) Is the only option to turn it off completely? Or are there some types of data capture that have a particularly high overhead?

• Mibble MIB Parser - extracting comments from the mib.

  I am using the Mibble MIB Parser to extract all simple data types from an MIB file. I've been successful until my attempt to extract comment text. Take the following module as an example: invBookList OBJECT-TYPE SYNTAX INTEGER { mobydick(1), -- call me ishmael paradiselost(2), -- aComment 1984(3), -- aComment solaris(4) -- aComment } MAX-ACCESS read-only STATUS current DESCRIPTION "A few Books for an example." ::= { invMasterList 43 } According to Mibble's API, the OBJECT-TYPE can be accessed by extracting an SnmpObjectType and then calling the appropriate getter method. Which I have done, and can successfully extract all of the text except the comments in the INTEGER syntax. I have tried calling getSyntax().getComment() on the SnmpObjectType, but always returns null. getSyntax() will extract the INTEGER syntax, e.g.: mobydick(1),paradiselist(2),1984(3),solaris(4) but unfortunately strips out the comments. Any one out there have experience with Mibble Parser who knows how to extract the comments? Many Thanks.

FROM ..... WHERE ........ GROUP BY ........... HAVING ............. ORDER BY ................ I am under the impression that the SELECT clause is evaluated last, but other than that I'm clueless.

  EDIT Taking COST 100 out made the command go through, however, I'm still unable to run my query because it yields this error: ERROR: function group_concat(character) does not exist HINT: No function matches the given name and argument types. You may need to add explicit type casts. The query I'm running is this: select tpid, group_concat(z) as z, group_concat(cast(r as char(2))) as r, group_concat(to_char(datecreated,'DD-Mon-YYYY HH12:MI am')) as datecreated, group_concat(to_char(datemodified,'DD-Mon-YYYY HH12:MI am')) as datemodified from tpids group by tpid order by tpid, zip This function seems to work fine locally, but moving it online yields this error... Is there something I'm missing? • Changing error message for datatype validation?

  Hey guys, I've a small question on ASP.NET MVC 2. I'm using Data Annotations on my Presentation Model and its model binder per default. But one step back, I want to do the most elementary thing: validation of the data type. Let's say I have an "int ID" on my model and want to edit the according entity in my view. If I enter something wrong like "foo", then I get a model error back, but the validation message is on English. I want to have this message in other languages, too. How can I do this? I remember that in MVC 1 I've written a custom model binder which checks the data types, but that's not what I want to do (at least not in MVC 2). Thus I hope there is a better way... • Why won't my UISearchDisplayController fire the shouldReloadTableForSearchString method when I enter

  I've been following Apple's TableSearch code example, but it's not working for me and I think I'm doing everything the same way they did it. The method below should be fired whenever the user types anything into the search box, but it never gets fired for me, just on the sample app. I have the appropriate @interface ContactsTableVC : UITableViewController { in the header file. I'm not sure what I'm missing or where else to look. My NSLog never gets called. Ideally I would like to perform assertions on the message but right now I'd be happy if the test just ran! Thanks

• Does C# have an equivalent to Scala's structural typing?

  In Scala, I can define structural types as follows: type Pressable { def press(): Unit } This means that I can define a function or method which takes as an argument something that is Pressable, like this: def foo(i: Pressable) { // etc. The object which I pass to this function must have defined for it a method called press() that matches the type signature defined in the type - takes no arguments, returns Unit (Scala's version of void). I can even use the structural type inline: def foo(i: { def press(): Unit }) { // etc. It basically allows the programmer to have all the benefits of duck typing while still having the benefit of compile-time type checking. Does C# have something similar? I've Googled but can't find anything, but I'm not familiar with C# in any depth. If there aren't, are there any plans to add this?

• Targetting DataTemplate for only on certain views

  I have a DataTemplate inside a global/shared ResourceDictionary like this which targets a DataType: <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type foo:Bar}"> <!-- My DataTemplate visual tree goes here... --> </DataTemplate> This DataTemplate replaces my all foo:Bar types on all my Views (UserControls/Windows). What I want to do is to apply this template to only certain views, keeping the other views are not affected by this DataTemplate. I can copy this DataTemplate to Resources sections of each of these view, but I don't want to copy/paste the contents of the DataTemplate which would result in maintenance headaches.

• IntellIJ editor doesn't appear

  I updated my IntellIJ install to the latest version (11.1.4) and now the Editor window doesn't appear. Double-clicking on the file, jump-to-source, nothing happens. No error message, it just doesn't appear. If I double-click on an xml layout file the preview window works, but no Editor window. Have installed and reinstalled; went back to an earlier version and it doesn't work there either. I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Update: Editor works if I create a new project. • Resources for Programmatic Rendering of Topology Maps

  Servus, Do you know of any frameworks, APIS, languages, or other resources that are well suited for drawing topology maps that allow a user to interact with objects on the map? I am not constrained by language choice and the program can be web-based, or stand-alone. I thought I would check before rolling my own. My goal is not to draw cartographic maps, but more like this picture: http://www.fineconnection.com/files/images/GraphicalNM.PNG, or if you are familiar with Edward Tufte's books, the data-visualization mechanisms he describes such as a map of a metro or subway. Also, if you have had any experience rendering these types of user interfaces or usage of underlying datastructures, I would be grateful to hear any thoughts you have on the subject, advice, any "gotchas." • How can I learn a multitouch screen's communication protocol and write a C# application for it?

  I have got a monitor with multitouch overlay on top of it. It works fine with Windows 7 but I want to write a multitouch application in C# for Windows XP which doesn't support touch feature out of the box. There is no documentation whatsoever and I emailed the manufacturer but never got a reply. However the device works with Google Earth, which doesn't natively support multitouch, on Windows XP. So I think it generates many types of messages together i.e. WM_TOUCH for Windows 7, one for Google Earth COM API, and probably its own messages either in UDP or Windows message form. How can I trap all communications and learn the protocol?

• In CAB is a service it's own module?

  I'm learning Composite Application Block and I've hit a rock about services. I have my shell application in its own solution, and of course a test module in its own solution (developed and testing completely independent and external of the shell solution). If I created a service named "Sql Service", would I need to put this in it's own library, so that both the shell, and the module know the types? If that's the case, then for good practice, should I put the service project in the shell solution, or external just like a module (in it's own solution), even though it's not loaded as a module? Then, what about references? Should the shell reference this directly, add then add the service? Or load it as a module and add the service? I have a lot of confusion on where I should create my services, and if I should reference or load as modules..

Part of my confusion I think is not knowing what Number types, primitives I should be using. ie in actionscript you have only Number, int, and uint. • How does Linq-to-Xml convert objects to strings?

  Linq-to-Xml contains lots of methods that allow you to add arbitrary objects to an xml tree. These objects are converted to strings by some means, but I can't seem to find the specification of how this occurs. The conversion I'm referring to is mentioned (but not specified) in MSDN. I happen to need this for javascript interop, but that doesn't much matter to the question. Linq to Xml isn't just calling .ToString(). Firstly, it'll accept null elements, and secondly, it's doing things no .ToString() implementation does: For example: new XElement("elem",true).ToString() == "<elem>true</elem>" //but... true.ToString() == "True" //IIRC, this is culture invariant, but in any case... true.ToString(CultureInfo.InvariantCulture) == "True" Other basic data types are similarly specially treated. So, does anybody know what it's doing and where that's described?

  Hello; I have a simple table with few date fields. Whenever I run following query: var docs = ( from d in base.EntityDataContext.document_reviews select d ).ToList(); I get following exception: Unable to convert MySQL date/time value to System.DateTime. MySql.Data.Types.MySqlConversionException: Unable to convert MySQL date/time value to System.DateTime The document reviews table has two date/time fields. One of them is nullable. I have tried placing following in connection string: Allow Zero Datetime=true; But I am still getting exception. Anyone with a solution?
