    I'm new to win32 API programming and I try to understand source code of treeview from codeproject. But I really don't understand this : BOOL TreeView::DoNotify(HWND hWnd, UINT msg, WPARAM wParam, LPARAM lParam) { // blah blah HTREEVIEW Selected = (HTREEITEM)SendDlgItemMessage(hWnd,ID_TREE,TVM_GETNEXTITEM,TVGN_CARET,(LPARAM)Selected); // halb halb } It doesn't work ( Selected is used without initializing) until I declare Selected as global variable.   • Why is the volatile qualifier used through out std::atomic?

    From what I've read from Herb Sutter and others you would think that volatile and concurrent programming were completely orthogonal concepts, at least as far as C/C++ are concerned. However, in GCC c++0x extension all of std::atomic's member functions have the volatile qualifier. The same is true in Anthony Williams's implementation of std::atomic. So what's deal, do my atomic<> variables need be volatile or not?

  • Can one Python project use both 2.x and 3.x code?

    Hi all - I'm going to start on a long (~1-year) programming project in Python. I want to use wxPython for my GUI (supports 2.6), but I also want to use 3.1 for the rest of the project (to start using the 3.x syntax). Is there any way for me to design a project that mixes 2.x and 3.x modules? Or should I just bite the bullet and use either 2.x (preferred, since I really want to learn wxPython) or 3.x throughout?   • reading binary datafile and writing into decimal no file

    exp data is generated by my mc scaler card as a binary file with first 511 bytes as header and then 24 bit data followed by four bit roi data. i am not a expert in programming. i do understand a little. I would like to convert this file into a file (without header) decimal nos with first col as channel no (1 to 8191) then the data (24 bit) then the Roi data (4 bit). I am looking for source code in c or qbasic. thanks

  • How to know what you don't know?

    Is there a way how to recognize that you don't know something? For example, I had some hard realizations: I didn't know that criticism isn't a good way to teach your friends. I realized that after reading How to Win Friends & Influence People. I didn't know about the fundamental needed for an indutive bias in machine learning. If I have read Mitchell's Machine Learning book early, I would know it. I haven't found it mentioned in other books and papers. Sorry if the question is too generic. The question could also mean: How to know that you are missing something important about your programming language?

  • OpenCL: does it play well with OpenMP, can I connect other languages to it, etc.

    The 1.0 spec for OpenCL just came out a few days ago (Spec is here) and I've just started to read through it. I want to know if it plays well with other high performance multiprocessing APIs like OpenMP (spec) and I want to know what I should learn. So, here are my basic questions: If I am already using OpenMP, will that break OpenCL or vice-versa? Is OpenCL more powerful than OpenMP? Or are they intended to be complementary? Is there a standard way of connecting an OpenCL program to a standard C99 program (or any other language)? What is it? Does anyone know if anyone is writing an OpenCL book? I'm reading the spec, but I've found books to be more helpful.

Ive been reading a log about tests, unit tests, tests frameworks, mocks and so on, but as a junior programmer I dont know anything about tests, not even where to start! Can anyone explain to young programmers about tests, how they`re run, where and what to test, what is unit testing, integration testing, automated tests? How much to test? I don't really want to spark any flame wars, but: When should you use scripting languages over compiled languages for website development? (and vice versa) Just to clarify, for the sake of this question, I define a "scripting language" to mean an interpreted language like PHP, Python, or Ruby, and a "compiled language" to mean a strongly typed, compiled language like C#, C++, Java, or VB.

    According to the computer language benchmark game, the LuaJIT implementation seems to beat every other JIT-ed dynamic language (V8, Tracemonkey, PLT Scheme, Erlang HIPE) by an order of magnitude. I know that these benchmarks are not representative (as they say: "Which programming language implementations have the fastest benchmark programs?"), but this is still really impressive. In practice, is it really the case? Someone have tested that Lua implementation?
