• HP Omni 27-1027c AIO...Upgradeable?

  I just bought an HP Omni 27 1057c from Sams Club. I like it a lot, but I want more performance. discovered that the integrated Intel HD 2500 graphics is almost useless for most games. I found a website that says it can be upgraded at http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2398314,00.asp. The computers specs can be found at Sams Club website or at HP website HP Product Specs. So what do you think? Can I upgrade Motherboard and Video Card?

• How to setup Thinkpad features on Thinkpad T500

  I have a IBM-Lenovo Thinkpad T500. I was previously a exclusive windows user, but recently installed ubuntu and loving it because of speed and interface. The only thing is that I don't get some features that I came to enjoy in windows. I need help setting these up: Hard-drive protection - active protection software that pauses drive when there is movement My printer doesn't work (can't find the driver for this one): canon Ip2600 A way to change which graphics chip to use while in OS. I have both the integrated and non integrated (dual-graphics). (If not easy to setup, I know there's a way to do it before it boots, but don't know how). CPU performance level - in windows you can pick "high performance", "power saver", etc.. to save batteries. My integrated camera w/light - it works but need an app where I can record videos, take snapshots, etc. can't find one that works. Thanks!

• IFS Achieves Oracle Exadata Optimized and Oracle Exalogic Optimized Status

• What are the options for hosting a small Plone site?

  I’ve developed a portfolio website for myself using Plone 4, and I’m looking for someplace to host it. Most Plone hosting services seem to focus on large, corporate deployments, but I need something that I can afford on a very limited budget and fits a small, single-admin website. My understanding is that my basic options are thus: I can go with a hosting service that specifically provides Plone. I know of WebFaction, but what others exist? Also, I’d have two stipulations for a Plone hosting service: (a) It needs to use Plone 4, for which I’ve developed my site, and (b) it needs to allow me SSH access to a home directory (including the Plone configuration), so that I may use my custom development eggs and such. I could use a VPS hosting service. What are my options here? Again, I need something cheap and scaled to my level. I could use Amazon EC2 or a similar service (please tell me of any) and pay by the tiniest unit of data. I’m a little scared of this because I have no idea how to do a cost-benefit analysis between this and a regular VPS host. The advantage of this approach would be that I only pay for what I use, making it very scalable, but I don’t know how the overall cost would compare to any VPS host under similar circumstances. What factors enter into the cost of Amazon EC2? What can I expect to pay under either option for regular traffic for a new website? Which one is more desirable for when a rush of visitors drive up my bandwidth bill? One last note: I know Plone isn’t common for websites for individuals, but please don’t try to talk me out of it here; that’s a completely different subject. For now, assume I’m sticking with Plone for good. Also, I have seen the Plone hosting services list on Plone.org—it’s twenty pages long, and the first page was nothing but professional Plone consulting services that sometimes offer hosting for business clients. • SBUG Session: The Enterprise Cache

The proposal was for a dedicated caching layer which all app servers and service providers can hook into, sharing resources and common data. The architecture might end up like this: I'll update this post with a link to the slide deck once it's available. The next session will have Udi Dahan walking through nServiceBus, register on EventBrite if you want to come along. Synopsis Looked at the benefits and drawbacks of app-centric isolated caches, compared to an enterprise-wide shared cache running on dedicated nodes; Suggested issues and risks around caching including staleness of data, resource usage, performance and testing; Walked through a generic service cache implemented as a WCF behaviour – suitable for IIS- or BizTalk-hosted services - which I'll be releasing on CodePlex shortly; Listed common options for cache providers and their offerings. Discussion Cache usage. Different value propositions for utilising the cache: improved performance, isolation from underlying systems (e.g. service output caching can have a TTL large enough to cover downtime), reduced resource impact – CPU, memory, SQL and cost (e.g. caching results of paid-for services). Dedicated cache nodes. Preferred over in-host caching provided latency is acceptable. Depending on cache provider, can offer easy scalability and global replication so cache clients always use local nodes. Restriction of AppFabric Caching to Windows Server 2008 not viewed as a concern. Security. Limited security model in most cache providers. Options for securing cache content suggested as custom implementations. Obfuscating keys and serialized values may mean additional security is not needed. Depending on security requirements and architecture, can ensure cache servers only accessible to cache clients via IPsec. Staleness. Generally thought to be an overrated problem. Thinking in line with eventual consistency, that serving up stale data may not be a significant issue. Good technical arguments support this, although I suspect business users will be harder to persuade. Providers. Positive feedback for AppFabric Caching – speed, configurability and richness of the distributed model making it a good enterprise choice. .NET port of memcached well thought of for performance but lack of replication makes it less suitable for these shared scenarios. Replicated fork – repcached – untried and less active than memcached. NCache also well thought of, but Express version too limited for enterprise scenarios, and commercial versions look costly compared to AppFabric.

• How to efficiently permanently redirect 150.000 images?

  For SEO purposes I need to rename around 150.000 images, then I'd like to permanently redirect the previous url locations requests to the new locations. The current url to every image is something like: website.com/something/unique_id/filename.jpg And I want to redirect them to: website.com/something/unique_id/new_filename.jpg I can only think about 2 options: 1) Create an enormous list of redirects to include into my nginx's conf file. 2) Redirect those requests to something like "website.com/new_location/unique_id" that will redirect the request again to the new path. There are other, better, options? Should I avoid multiple 301 redirects? Will crawlers downgrade my rankings because of multiple redirects?

• Secure PHP environments with PHP-FPM and SFTP

  I'd like to set up secure environments for a small number of untrusted PHP websites on a Debian server. Right now everything runs on the same Apache2 with mod_php5 and vsftpd for administrative file access, so there is room for improvement. The idea is to use nginx instead of apache, SFTP through OpenSSH instead of vsftpd and chrooted (in sshd_config), individual users for each website with their own pool of PHP processes. All these users and nginx are part of the same group. Now in theory I can set 700 permissions on all PHP scripts and 750 on static files that nginx has to serve up. Theoretically, if a website is compromised all the other users' data is safe, right? Are there better solutions that require less setup time and memory per website? Cheers

• Oracle’s Sun Server X4-8 with Built-in Elastic Computing

  We are excited to announce the release of Oracle's new 8-socket server, Sun Server X4-8. It’s the most flexible 8-socket x86 server Oracle has ever designed, and also the most powerful. Not only does it use the fastest Intel® Xeon® E7 v2 processors, but also its memory, I/O and storage subsystems are all designed for maximum performance and throughput. Like its predecessor, the Sun Server X4-8 uses a “glueless” design that allows for maximum performance for Oracle Database, while also reducing power consumption and improving reliability. The specs are pretty impressive. Sun Server X4-8 supports 120 cores (or 240 threads), 6 TB memory, 9.6 TB HDD capacity or 3.2 TB SSD capacity, contains 16 PCIe Gen 3 I/O expansion slots, and allows for up to 6.4 TB Sun Flash Accelerator F80 PCIe Cards. The Sun Server X4-8 is also the most dense x86 server with its 5U chassis, allowing 60% higher rack-level core and DIMM slot density than the competition.  There has been a lot of innovation in Oracle’s x86 product line, but the latest and most significant is a capability called elastic computing. This new capability is built into each Sun Server X4-8.   Elastic computing starts with the Intel processor. While Intel provides a wide range of processors each with a fixed combination of core count, operational frequency, and power consumption, customers have been forced to make tradeoffs when they select a particular processor. They have had to make educated guesses on which particular processor (core count/frequency/cache size) will be best suited for the workload they intend to execute on the server.Oracle and Intel worked jointly to define a new processor, the Intel Xeon E7-8895 v2 for the Sun Server X4-8, that has unique characteristics and effectively combines the capabilities of three different Xeon processors into a single processor. Oracle system design engineers worked closely with Oracle’s operating system development teams to achieve the ability to vary the core count and operating frequency of the Xeon E7-8895 v2 processor with time without the need for a system level reboot.  Along with the new processor, enhancements have been made to the system BIOS, Oracle Solaris, and Oracle Linux, which allow the processors in the system to dynamically clock up to faster speeds as cores are disabled and to reach higher maximum turbo frequencies for the remaining active cores.   BMW Oracle Racing's America's Cup: A Victory for Database Technology BMW Oracle Racing's victory in the 33rd America's Cup yacht race in February showcased the crew's extraordinary sailing expertise. But to hear them talk, the real stars weren't actually human. "The story of this race is in the technology," says Ian Burns, design coordinator for BMW Oracle Racing. Gathering and Mining Sailing DataFrom the drag-resistant hull to its 23-story wing sail, the BMW Oracle USA trimaran is a technological marvel. But to learn to sail it well, the crew needed to review enormous amounts of reliable data every time they took the boat for a test run. Burns and his team collected performance data from 250 sensors throughout the trimaran at the rate of 10 times per second. An hour of sailing alone generates 90 million data points.BMW Oracle Racing turned to Oracle Data Mining in Oracle Database 11g to extract maximum value from the data. Burns and his team reviewed and shared raw data with crew members daily using a Web application built in Oracle Application Express (Oracle APEX). "Someone would say, 'Wouldn't it be great if we could look at some new combination of numbers?' We could quickly build an Oracle Application Express application and share the information during the same meeting," says Burns. Analyzing Wind and Other Environmental ConditionsBurns then streamed the data to the Oracle Austin Data Center, where a dedicated team tackled deeper analysis. Because the data was collected in an Oracle Database, the Data Center team could dive straight into the analytics problems without having to do any extract, transform, and load processes or data conversion. And the many advanced data mining algorithms in Oracle Data Mining allowed the analytics team to build vital performance analytics. For example, the technology team could remove masking elements such as environmental conditions to give accurate data on the best mast rotation for certain wind conditions. Without the data mining, Burns says the boat wouldn't have run as fast. "The design of the boat was important, but once you've got it designed, the whole race is down to how the guys can use it," he says. "With Oracle database technology we could compare the incremental improvements in our performance from the first day of sailing to the very last day. With data mining we could check data against the things we saw, and we could find things that weren't otherwise easily observable and findable."

• ASP.NET developers turning to Visual WebGui for rich management system

  When The Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) decided they needed a web application to allow easy access to the expenses management system they initially went to ASP.NET web forms combined with CSS. The outcome, however, was not satisfying enough as it appeared bland and lacked in richness. So in order to enrich the UI and give the web application some glitz, Visual WebGui was selected. Visual WebGui provided the needed richness and the familiar Windows look and feel also made the transition for the desktop users very easy. The richer GUI of Visual WebGui compared to ASP.NET conveyed some initial concerns about performance. But the Visual WebGui performance turned out to be a surprising advantage as the website maintained good response times. Working with Visual WebGui required a paradigm shift for the development process as some of the usual methods of coding with ASP.NET did not apply. However, the transition was fairly easy due to the simplicity and intuitiveness of Visual WebGui as well as the good support and documentation. “The shift into a different development paradigm was eased by the Visual WebGui web forums which are very active thanks to a large, involved community. • How to track url redirects in browser?

  I have typed http://example.com/load/ in my browser window and pressed "ENTER" key. Now on press of enter this website redirects me to http://example.com/load/1/ and then http://example.com/load/2/ and then I finally landed on this url http://example.com/load/3/. These redirection happens at website end, I am not aware where I am going. But I finally landed on this url: http://example.com/load/3/ I want to track where all my browser gone all urls, I am not seeing it in my history as its redirect at website end. Is there any firefox addon or some toll which can track this for me? I am not sure where to ask this question, so asking it here, moderators please check!

• Regular-Expressions.info Thoroughly Updated

  RegexBuddy 4 was released earlier this month. This is a major upgrade that significantly improves RegexBuddy’s ability to emulate the features and deficiencies of the latest versions of all the popular regex flavors as well as many past versions of these flavors. Along with that, the Regular-Expressions.info website has been thoroughly updated with new content. Both the tutorial and reference sections have been significantly expanded to cover all the features of the latest regular expression flavors. There are also new tutorial and reference subsections that explain the syntax used by replacement strings when searching and replacing with regular expressions. I’m also reviving this blog. In the coming weeks you can expect blog post that highlight the new topics on the Regular-Expressions.info website. Later on I’ll blog about more intricate regex-related issues that RegexBuddy 4 emulates but that the website doesn’t talk about or only mentions in passing. RegexBuddy 4.0.0 is aware of 574 different aspects (syntactic and behavioral differences) of 94 regular expression flavors. These numbers are surely to grow with future 4.x.x releases. While RegexBuddy juggles it all with ease, that’s far too much detail to cover in a tutorial or reference that any person would want to read.   The Defense Manpower Data Center milConnect website recently won the 2012 Excellence.gov Award for Excellence in the Workforce. Defense Manpower Data Center milConnect is a centralized, online resource that provides military service members (active and retired) and their families (over 42 million in total) quick access to their profile, health care enrollments, benefits, and other military-related topics. The self-service website allow users to quickly and easily find and, where applicable, update their information in the Defense Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and milConnect transmits information to and from one reliable source safely and securely.  The Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) maintains the largest, most comprehensive central repository of personnel, manpower, casualty, pay, entitlement, personnel security, person identity and attributes, survey, testing, training, and financial data in the Department of Defense (DoD).  This is one of the largest systems of record in the world. milConnect had the challenge of modernizing the user experience for over 42 million users.   After reading my initial two blog posts on New Cardinality Estimation, I received quite a few questions. Once I receive this question, I felt I should have clarified it earlier few things when I started to write about cardinality. Before continuing this blog, if you have not read it before I suggest you read following two blog posts. SQL SERVER – Simple Demo of New Cardinality Estimation Features of SQL Server 2014 SQL SERVER – Cardinality Estimation and Performance – SQL in Sixty Seconds #072 Q: Does new cardinality will improve performance of all of my queries? A: Remember, there is no 0 or 1 logic when it is about estimation. The general assumption is that most of the queries will be benefited by new cardinality estimation introduced in SQL Server 2014. That is why the generic advice is to set the compatibility level of the database to 120, which is for SQL Server 2014. Q: Is it possible that after changing cardinality estimation to new logic by setting the value to compatibility level to 120, I get degraded performance for few queries? A: Yes, it is possible. However, the number of the queries where this impact should be very less. Q: Can I still run my database in older compatibility level and force few queries to newer cardinality estimation logic? If yes, How? A: Yes, you can do that. You will need to force your query with trace flag 2312 to use newer cardinality estimation logic. • Will Google treat this JavaScript code as a bad practice?

  I have a website that provides a custom UX experience implemented via JavaScript. When JavaScript is disabled in the browser the website falls back to CSS for the layout. To make this possible I've added a noJS class to the <body> and quickly remove it via JavaScript. <body class="noJS layout-wide"> <script type="text/javascript">var b=document.getElementById("body");b.className=b.className.replace("noJS","");</script> This caused a problem when the page loads and JavaScript is enabled. The body immediately has it's noJS class removed, and this causes the layout to appear messed up until the JavaScript code for layout is executed (at bottom of the page). To solve this I hide each article via JavaScript by adding a CSS class fix which is display:none as each article is loaded. <article id="q-3217">....</article> <script type="text/javascript">var b=document.getElementById("q-3217");b.className=b.className+" fix";</script> After the page is ready I show all the articles in the correct layout. I've read many times in Google's documentation not to hide content. So I'm worried that the Google will penalize my website for doing this.

Examples of optimization strategies the presentation covers are the main query transformations, the join optimizer, the data access selection strategies, and the range optimizer. For the cost-based optimizations, an overview of the cost model and the data used for doing the cost estimations is included. Saturday, 1.00 pm, Room Golden Gate 6: Overview of New Optimizer Features in MySQL 5.6—Manyi Lu, Oracle Many optimizer features have been added into MySQL 5.6. This session provides an introduction to these great features. Multirange read, index condition pushdown, and batched key access will yield huge performance improvements on large data volumes. Structured explain, explain for update/delete/insert, and optimizer tracing will help users analyze and speed up queries.
