  • Problem when trying to configure enterprise library 5.0 (Data Access Application Block)

    Hi There Stackoverflow, I am running into some problems while trying to get DAAB from Enterprise library 5.0 running. I have followed the steps as per the tutorial, but am getting errors... 1) Download / install enterprise library 2) Add references to the blocks I need (common / data) 3) Imports Imports Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common Imports Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data 4) Through the enterprise library config software. I open up the web.config from my site. I then click Blocks, then Add data settings... fill in my details and save / close 5) I then (thinking setup is complete) try to get an instance of the database via Dim db As Database = DatabaseFactory.CreateDatabase() 6) I compile and receive the following error: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data, Version=5.0.414.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference.     Hi, we have a VSTO outlook add-in we'd like to silently deploy to everyone via AD. I'm signing the App with a "Code signing" certificate (requested certmgr from AD). If I add this certificate to my Trusted Publishers, then I can silently install the signed app via the VSTOInstaller.exe (with the /S switch). We don't want to have to install my certificate as a trusted publisher on everyone's machine - we'd like to be able to say that any code signed by a certificate issued within our AD is trusted. Is there some way to do this?

  • Determing software estimates and tracking past estimates

    I know that this probably has as many answers as users here on SO, but software estimation always seemed like an esoteric science. Software developers don't have a magic book to refer to as exist in many other industries. I've been spending the last couple of days working on putting together some estimates for a bit of work that I am proposing for a freelance project that I am working on and am having trouble getting it down. I'm not experienced with any real software estimation practices and am trying to go from the gut based on my experience but also trying to be a little loose (not too loose though) on the estimates to leave me a bit of room to work. I read this blog entry http://blogs.popart.com/2007/07/what-scotty-from-star-trek-can-teach-us-about-managing-expectations/ that was linked to from SO and would like to start tracking my estimates at work as well even though I'm not really required to create estimates there. What tools or techniques would you recommend? Also, how much padding do you usually add in to a time estimate?

Sometimes I know how many objects I want to add to the list and was thinking about using new[] to allocate a chunk and still be able to delete every object on its own with the Disposer-style of boost::intrusive.

    I have a good idea about Agile development process but it seems it does not fit well with a embedded project with significant hardware changes. I will describe below what we are currently doing (Ad-hoc way, no defined process yet). The changes are divided into three categories and different processes are used for each of them: complete hardware change example : use a different video codec IP a) Study the new IP b) RTL/FPGA simulation c) Implement the legacy interface - go to b) d) Wait until hardware (tape out) is ready f) Test on the real hardware hardware improvement example : enhance the image display quality by improving the underlying algorithm a) RTL/FPGA simulation b) Wait until hardware and test on the hardware Minor change example : only change hardware register mapping a) Wait until hardware and test on the hardware The worry is it seems we don't have too much control and confidence about software maturity for the hardware changes as the bring-up schedule is always very tight and the customer desired a seamless change when updating to a new version of hardware. How did you manage this kind of hardware change? Did you solve that by a Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL)? Did you have a automatic test for the HAL layer? How did you test when the hardware platform is not even ready? Do you have well-documented processes for this kind of change?

I dont want to built using Java/J2ee standard technology as i want to learn new language. The specification about website i can give is that: 1) its a real estate based site. 2) so it will have a db of real estate data around million records 3) website will have more than 1000 hits /day and will have various functionality like search, add , delete,generate reports etc. So i mean UI should be good and fast. Technologies i have in mind .NEt( i have already worked on it but it licensed so may not go for it) , Groovy, Ruby on rails ,Play, GWT etc ... I am a college student and the website is again of a student(non techie guy) so i have 5-6 mnths to bring the website up I have read about them but all have adv and disadv but would like to hear from people who have used it and can tell me what they felt about the languages and problems while developing it..     I am using Spring for the first time and must be doing something wrong. I have a project with several Bean implementations and now I am trying to create a test class with Spring Test and JUnit. I am trying to use Spring Test to inject a customized bean into the test class. The code works fine but I know a release is required somewhere. If I add the last line as a release or autorelease, the app will crash once the user presses done on the movieplayer.   • When good programmers go bad!

    Hi, I'm a team lead/dev who manages a team of 10 programmers. Most of them are hard working talented guys. But of late, I've got this one person who while highly talented and has delivered great work for me in the past, has just become completely unreliable. It's not his ability - that is not in question - he's proven that many times. He just looks bored now. Is blatantly not doing much work (despite a LOT of pressure being put on the team to meet tight deadlines etc.) He just doesn't seem to care and looks bored. I'm partially guilty for not having addressed this before now - I was afraid to have to lose a talented guy given the workload I've got on. But at this stage it's becoming a problem and affecting those around him. Can anyone spare their thoughts or words of wisdom on how I should go about dealing this. I want the talented AND motivated guy back. Otherwise he's gonna have to go. Thanks, Ed
